On the nose thing, after I swallow my sip, I sometimes do a "retro Exhale" (like how you make cigar smoke come out your nose) and I find that to be another interesting level.
The new location looks a bit dark. I would add some uplights. If you are lacking outlets or whatever you can get battery powered dome-looking tap lights, very inexpensive. I'd put them on the floor in the background.
I believe the shelf behind Rex is supposed to be lit similar to the ones behind Daniel, but there have been.. difficulties? It is probably Rex's fault.
I like the bung hole wall with the lighting built in to highlight the whisky. My ? is do you think the light (or heat from it) will damage the whisky over time? Did you use LED rope strip or something like MR 11 or MR 16 ?......Cheers!
Did COVID-19 ruin your plans for the Bastard's Ball for 2020? I hope you were able to at least get it in virtually. I just had a bottle of WhistlePig 10 bought for me today. It should be here soon. I can hardly wait. It's been over five years since I had WhistlePig Aged 12 Years Old World Cask Rye. WhistlePig is my standard for rye.
You and some other "Whiskey Tubers" are helping make a rye drinker out of me. Rye question: My first rye was Bulleit. (MGP 95% rye) I've noticed that Clyde Mays and George Dickel source this same product to sell under their label. I've had all three and they are good and have similar flavor profile. Although they are the same proof, I've noticed that the Bulleit and Clyde Mays offerings are viscus and creamy, while the Dickel rye seems thinner. What's the difference? (My theory is age.) Thanks.
@@kirbyculp3449 The "Charcoal mellowing", Lincoln county process is done prior to barreling Dickel distilled products. This rye is sourced from MGP already in the barrels. How do you "Tone down" a whiskey and keep it the same ABV?
Sir, the website, and I believe the bottle label as well, state that this is charcoal filtered and chilled. The phrase 'toned down' is my substitute for the mis-appreciated 'smooth'. I am not professing that Diageo 'toned down' the ABV but that some oils and proteins may have been chill-filtered. Please review Ralfy's videos on the topic.
Woah! I just added a splash of Knappogue 12 and it's (Whistle Pig 10) fantastic blended with Irish Whiskey.... Interesting! Almost creates a scotch characteristic. Smooth on the front end with lighter sweetness and the oak is tamed but there is that nice peaty/earthy quality by adding Irish Whiskey. Also a nice note of nuttiness comes through. I can also pickup more on the caramel notes. Then on the back end all nice warming spicy Rye finish.
Quality rye like this has a grassy earthy flavor that reminds me of the lake water at my grandparents house in Texas. The tap water tastes the same but less intense. Normally lake water would not be a positive description of a whiskey's nose/palate, but nostalgia is delicious and so I enjoy the experience. That said, for what the experience costs I'd rather drink something less lake
After silently watching for a couple of years and then lurking in the comments, I finally have a legitimate question for the tribe. I’ve finally taken on making an infinity bottle which I just sort of haphazardly filled with all my go to whiskeys laying around from various categories. It’s delicious but for the life of me I can’t pick out as many notes as I was expecting. Have certain notes from certain whiskeys just taken over or is this just how it goes with infinity bottles? (Interesting note- I added about equal parts talisker storm and naked grouse and the grouse seems to be more prominent than the talisker)
Yeah, I think it’s fun but some of the lighter, more intricate (and often time most interesting) flavors get lost. It’s more about fun and personalization than complex flavors.
Easy question are you going to have a representation of each region of Scotch and if you that opens up the differences in Bourbon from around the U.S.? Me thinks your feature wall might be a little small.
In my experience the angels envy rye is definitely sweeter, probably somewhat to do with the rum finish. I completely prefer the angels envy rye, but im not really a whistlepig fan so take that answer with a few grains of salt.
Definitely different. The rum finished AE may be my favorite, but for a straight rye, WP is one of the best I've ever had. You might also check out the 12 year Bulliett rye.
I don’t know if it’s the New Vault, but this is the best Video from you guys. Plus I have a few of those bottles my self. Makes the video even better.🥃🥃🥃👍👍👍✨✨✨

So I went to a scotch tasting tonight, went out afterwards and wanted to try this after watching this video. So my friend and I ordered it and it was absolutely freakin' delicious. Then the waitress comes by and says, oops, we gave you Boss Hog instead. LOL!! The mgr told her she would have to eat the cost as it was $50 a pour.....but of course, we couldn't let her do that and paid for it. It was freakin' amazing! Lol, but dang!
@@keithrose4227 sorry I won't Send it, I really liked there best whiskey to mix with coke video and beginner whiskey video where they cover the cheaper whiskeys. Thanks for the reply tho
Bought a Creag Isle single malt 12yo. for a fairly modest price. 42.2% alcohol. Descent amount of peat and smoke. Tasted it at the same time with a Laphroaig 10, and fairly comparable. The Creag was a bit sweeter, but a tad more watery (not much). Wasn't disappointed with the purchase.
I love the Vault 2.0 itself, but in the videos two things I'm not a huge fan of: 1. The lighting - it feels darker, and it feels... colder, less intimate (no, not like that), yet the light that is there feels too... bright and unnaturally white (as in bright white versus warm white)? 2. The sound - it feels bit hollow, and tinny, with a bit of an echo, as if it's in a huge space, which also contributes a bit to the perception of distance and lack of intimacy (again, not like that)... If that could get tweaked a bit, it will be even more awesomer (that's a word now).
The Cosmic bung hole whiskey wall needs it's own episodes, in terms of establishing starting points to filling those shelves with whiskey categories. Thoughts?
Hello amazing people from the whisky vault. Soon I will be celebrating a special day. I want to buy a whisky to drink only on very special occasions. I love stuff like ardbeg but since I will be drinking it on special occasions (with loved ones) peat may not be my friend. I also like sherry altough allot of sherry speysides with low proof started to taste relativly the same as of late. What do you guys (and the amazing people from the whisky tribe) recommend? (Around 110 price) and I like high proof:). Keep up the great work Daniel and Rex.
okay so the room is waaay too silent. try an episode with some music for ambiance, and i guarantee the eps will be so much better. right now, something needs to fill in that space.
Love the new digs, guys. Gotta admit, that Rex's "snort of approval" kinda reminds me of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lechter describing the "liver with a good Chianti."
When did this switch around? WAAAAAAY back in the day Rex couldn't wait to get into and drink the whiskey and Daniel would want to keep talking about the history and such. Now Daniel has to tell Rex to taste is!? What is happening in this space vacuum?? 1:32 Daniel tastes 2:42 Rex tastes a full minute after. Mooch where have you gone?!
Not that what you said is wrong, it’s not, but I think “reference” is usually the word people use when something is the ideal example of a category, ie “reference rye.”
Took whiskey through the nose once, I ended up heaving up all of the St. Patrick's day boiled dinner I had earlier... For an entry level Rye Whistle Pig's new Piggyback 6 year aged I would say fits the bill.
So, after the whiskey up the nose comment, is anyone else expecting the next Tribe episode to involve a Neti Pot? Guys, if you're gonna do it, go balls deep and go cask strength...
HAAA yes! By the power of the Almighty Bunghole, Rex learned Kung Fu! This is such a proud and fulfilling moment for me. Another one of my favorite things coalesces in the Whiskey Vault/Tribe.
Gotta say, the new vault looks like you converted a closet into a whiskey room. I miss the way the light in the old vault made all the bottles look like what I hope is at the end of my ideal rainbow if I ever get there. New set is dark as the inside of a bunghole.
I like the new vault guys but the lighting and the sound is not great. It looks like you're in front of a green screen. The sound is totally dead. Old Vault was better for that. But these are easily sortable issues and it does look amazing :-)
I feel like Whistle Pig is overpowered by the taste of earthy/soil coated beets and I just can't get past it. Really wanted to like it for all the acclaim it gets, but I just can't. Curious if it's unique to the plain 10 year I have or if it's across the brand, but I really can't justify buying more to find out. It's so overpriced.

Agreed. Sorry Rex. It’s the rules

I’m thinking I should replace the essential oils my wife uses in the diffuser with whiskey to test Rex’s smell/taste theory.
We tried that it is fantastic.

The Dickel is run through maple. Also I think Diageo generally tones down their products.

Not if they’re LED lights.....regular incandescent bulbs certainly would heat it up and, I imagine, dramatically;y affect the whiskey
