WhistlePig Rye Whiskey Review - Standard vs. Single Barrels

  • Here I taste the standard WhistlePig 10 year/100 proof side-by-side with a 107.2 proof Single Barrel picked by Blind Pig Liquor in Houston and a 119 proof Single Barrel by Martin Wine Cellar in New Orleans. All are priced around $75. While these two single barrels were very tasty, I always recommend being cautious with store picks/single barrels. The same uniqueness that can make them standout to the selector's palate, may not necessarily align with yours. When possible, try before you buy.
    If you enjoy my reviews and want even more, join me at my LiquorHound Patreon channel (link in the barrel picture on my homepage or / liquorhound . There you'll get an extra 30-40 videos per year, in addition to the 10-12 that I've always done here.
    As of September 2018, my current bottle count is over 2,400. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been certified by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for the last two decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for watching and sharing in my passion.
    Cheers!

    Stay away from the Boss Hog - its a marketing ploy at $499. Get the 10 year old for $79 per 750ml. Its the same as the Boss.

    Great video! I've been tempted by a Whistlepig store pick. Having never tried their stuff I wasn't sure it was worth $85. Unfortunately in GA, you can't sample in stores. I may have to get a bottle now!

    They have a 10 year version of this on the shelf at 80 bucks...and a cask strength 13 year I think it was.....at least 12 as I recall....for $130. I was soooo tempted to pop on one but I know they don't give samples where I'm from. It's just a buy and take your chances. I love orange and vanilla etc so I would be with you in taking the second one myself. So are you saying I should double check where that cask strength bottle was made? And if it's Canada pop on it?

    Great review Chris. I came back to it because I've just bought a store pick bottle of the 10 year bottled at 61.2% here in the U.K selected by a U.K shop. We have no chance to try before we buy over here. There were 132 bottles and they will be gone in under 2 days. I'll do what you suggest and contact the shop for any additional info because it's a very dark looking whisky for 10 years. Cheers. WT

    What places let you taste it before you buy? I'd love to know, because most places around where I live would look at me like I had 3 heads if I asked for a taste.

      A lot of these WP single barrels from mid-2018 to early-2019 were mgp. They don’t do them anymore though in the 10 year.

    is it really possible to make whiskey from 100% rye? i thought a small amount of barley is indispensable to get fermentation started. or am i mistaken?

    • @Tantrum777
      @Tantrum777 6 лет назад

      Barley has more enzymes in it that help convert the starches to sugars, This happens in the mashing faze. To answer your question though is yes, its very possible to 100% however your efficiency may suffer, aka yield.

    The liquor store near me has a single barrel pick, the only thing it states on the back label is aged and bottled in Vermont by goamericago llc. Anyone know if this is canadian juice or the mpg stuff?

      I’m guessing that’s an older bottle. When they originally came out they didn’t list the sourcing locations (but it was Canadian whisky). Cheers!

    Just picked up a Whistle Pig Rye Store Pick that is 16 Yrs in Houston. 105.1 Horsepower. I’ll trade ya for a bottle of like kind and quality when I come to your town. I like Buffalo Trace and Brown Forman products. Not really a Rye guy but picked it up due to the age as I know they don’t release a rye that old.

    Cool vid lol kinda funny though. I wanna learn more about whiskey what are some of the best bottles for a beginner to buy and some of the best for an expert

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! It’s funny how such a short question can be so broad. I’ll try to answer it without digressing too much.
      To a beginner, the first thing I’ll say is make the experience about learning, tasting and enjoying the spirit, not about getting drunk which could lead to big problems - not the least of which is alcoholism. Try to look at a great glass or bottle of whisky/ey as a tribute to the people (present and past) who created it. That said, I recommend that beginners start by researching a specific whisky/ey category to learn what it is, how it’s made, and what to expect (so you don’t start with a smoky Islay Whisky for example). When it comes to buying/tasting, start in a restaurant or bar so you can sample “by the glass”, (1/2 oz preferably). This will allow you can try a few and not waste money on bottles you don’t like. Once you find a category you enjoy (Bourbon, Irish, Scotch, etc...), stick to the reputable known brands and at lower abv’s like 40%-43% (46% max). Of course if it’s too “hot” on the plate, remember you can slowly add drops of water to bring it down to a level you enjoy. Never start with ice or water in your whisky/ey since both dilute uncontrollably and I recommend tasting the spirit as-is first. As you become more experienced, you can venture out into the higher abv’s, lesser known brands or “craft” spirits to see and understand the differences.
      As for “experts” and which bottles are for them, it depends on their palates and the category they most prefer. But you’ll definitely know what those are when you get to that point. Cheers!

      LiquorHound Nice! Thanks. Iv been watching hours and hours of whiskey reviews and trying to learn about whiskey cuz im a truck driver and I spend all day in the truck so I have time to kill so I learn about different things. I’m going to buy a few bottles this weekend and try them out try to find what I like. I think I’d lean more towards sweeter tasting whiskeys but im not sure. I like Drambuie but that’s too sweet. I keep seeing people recommend monkey shoulder for the cheaper whiskeys and Glenfiddich for a little more bang for your your buck type of whiskey. Macallan and Highland Park 12 year too

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  3 года назад

      Whoa! That sounds like a funky barrel. I don't want any band-aids, iodine or hospital smells in my Ryes - in Islay whiskies maybe - but definitely not in my WhistlePigs. Cheers!

    several of the ones i've seen say "canada" on the back label but I was told they're sourced from MGP in Indiana. The information on these picks is severely lacking in some cases.

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 лет назад

      Yeah I've been hearing grumblings in the community about some mislabeling issues they've been finding. As in some being labeled Canada but having MGP inside and vice versa. I hope WP gets that straightened out or at that price point people might not take the risk of buying one. Cheers!

      I wonder if that’s their special Boss Hog releases (like the “Black Prince”) you’re seeing at $400-$500. Those have gotten out of control (price wise) imo. The standard 10 year (normal distillery release or a store pick) should never be over $100. Cheers!

    • @LiquorHound
      @LiquorHound  5 лет назад

      Ugh, it was most likely a bad Indiana (MGP) sourced one. I’ve rarely had a bad Canadian WP, but with them now bottling from both sources, it’s hard to know what you’re going to get (without actually seeing the back of the bottle). Tough experience but at least it wasn’t too expensive. Cheers!
