I have a lot of questions about this. Aside from some cool features like the snare throw-off and the pitch bending, what else is there? First, I really don't mind wires. Wires are far less annoying than a trigger turning off in the middle of a set. Swapping batteries seems like a toy. I have a DW exotic acoustic kit. If they offered an acoustic conversion even if it's for DW only, I might consider it. But, I definitely would not buy a whole new E-drum kit just for a wireless feature unless it was in line with the shell pack pricing we see today. A 6-piece DW kit is already $7k. Last, I like to turn on my module and just play. I don't want to boot up a laptop and get it all going before I can play. Sure we can use a dedicated laptop but now we are adding $$$$. This is for the deep-pocket people and pro players IMHO. Just my $.02. P.S. I did a session with Thomas Lang a couple months ago and I saw one of these cymbals. They do look pretty interesting.

As a guitar player as well, this situation reminds me of the Roland GR55.
Roland's current guitar synth is a GR55, and you have to use the sounds internally he GR55 module/brain. ( Unless you want horrible tracking).
In contrast, Fishman came out with the Fishman Triple Play, which is a bluetooth wireless guitar synth that syncs with a pc and with that, the whole would of VSTs and Kontakt sounds at your disposal.
What Fishman did was to take crown away from Roland as the best guitar synth on the market, and left Roland flat footed.
My guess is, Roland didn't want to see the same thing happen to their Roland drum line.

Wireless, great sounds (SD3 quality or at least between flagship e-drum brains and SD3 quality) and controlled via laptop! Sounds like a dream come true. Virtually a "normal drum kit" no wires (minimal anyways) with the versatility and customisation of a laptop brain with a huge number of inputs. If this is legit, it has the potential to revolutionise e-drums. I imagine it won't be cheap at all...... actually, pretty damn expensive, but I'll be watching very closely I think!

It appears to be a 'hybrid' e drum set. Part traditional and part electronic. Maybe with acoustic heads and e pickups, the sound can be better tuned and tailored. Will definitely want to keep eyes on this new product. With the digital interface and software on PC based laptops, the 'sound library' will allow even more sound choices. It is possible by the time it's released, there might be too many choices and end users will be confused and frustrated.

I recently picked up a Yamaha DTXtreme is and it has the little red knobs on the side of the drum pads to change the pitch (on toms) and the share and pitch on the Snare drum. I bought the kit for nostalgia (I once owned the kit for a very short time) but I am enjoying it very much. I agree with you that this could be really innovative and may even bring e-drums into a new phase altogether. I have to say however, that the idea of each component powered by AA batteries is concerning. Having grown up in the 70s I remember painfully the damage done when a battery is left in a device for too long and it begins to leak and corrode the battery box. That leads to the batteries no longer powering the unit, so I am not a fan of the AA battery idea.

Very interesting! I don't see how wireless pads will make sense for budget options if it adds to the cost significantly. Drummers shopping in the low and mid range want the best bang for their buck and I doubt they will sacrifice sounds, triggering, or pad size just to have fewer cables. Hopefully the triggering tech trickles down in wired form (if it is a lot cheaper the wireless)

  • @sucodecupuacu
    @sucodecupuacu Год назад +1

I love that they are doing something new, and i think it is awesome. I don't like that Roland bought them because that means the tech will probably stagnate and hide under patents. Lastly, i think the "cables are such a pain" argument is very overblown. Spend a couple hours and come up with a good cable management system, then it's easy from there. I can set up my expanded strike pro from a pile of drums and hardware to sound check ready in about 15 minutes

for someone who wasn't in attendance, this was a very thorough rundown of all of my concerns
it seems to me that the most critical and innovative components here are just the pieces that would make it very easy for a regular drummer to convert an existing acoustic kit to a wireless electronic or hybrid kit
dw should've remained its own entity and give drummers a quality alternative to roland's price gouging. roland was content to milk its stale cash cow and then just buy out the competition
i imagine roland is determined to make this technology as proprietary as possible for as long as possible. so i expect replacement parts to be expensive, even though they seem to have a small and simple form factor. i also expect repairs to be difficult (sealed seems and fully enclosed), as to make drummers just shell out for new parts, instead

I agree with the general theme of all the previous comments - this will be brilliant if they can pull it off successfully but will also likely be super-expensive. A couple of questions spring to mind though:
    1. Since there will be no module, why oh why are they bothering to record/produce their own sound library? Surely it would make more sense and be much cheaper to partner with an established player in this field e.g. Toontrack, Steven Slate. Drummers could then purchase the sound library they prefer and the initial cost of the DWe kit could be (substantially?) reduced.
    2. When using a laptop and software sound library, how do you get separate feeds for kick, snare, hats etc. to the mixing desk? (I realise this is a general question, not limited to the DWe kit).

I've played high end Roland kits. I own Alesis kits. I prefer all acoustic. No matter how much money you throw at electric they'll never be acoustic.

My concern, other than price, is the volume. If these are based on real acoustic drums, part of the appeal of e-drums is lost.

3k? In our dreams, you know Roland. But as years go by, the inventors and competitors will make it a standard and more affordable. Fingers crossed. Rock on, make love.

Hey guys! My question is not related to the topic of the video but: why people buy a Roland PD-140DS Snare pad (720 $) if you could buy acoustic snare. Replace head to Jobecky`s 3 ply and use integral 2-zone trigger. It will be cheaper and there is no difference in the sound because it is formed by the drum module. Am i wrong or just don`t understand something?

I'm worried that they will do the scam thing where they charge you to have access to the sample after you spend $10k on the kit, for their "library"

This future release looks interesting, although, judging from my ears, they don' t sound that expressive. Wondering if it is the limitation of the drums, or maybe just that they haven't had a lot of time to develop a drum library with plenty of stacked velocities and round robins, which make edrums more expressive.

Damn well I just bought an Alesis strike Pro SE. I had a Roland TD 20 it was nice but I couldn’t play with Samples like Superior. I kinda wish I waited now though I think dw could get close to the Alesis price. Oh well.

waiting for the latest electronic kit is a futile endeavor. You did the right thing. You can always sell the Alesis, but the DW price will likely be astronomical.

great vid as always. as for does roland need the wireless? No the cables are fine. I just want better cheaper kits that trigger better. also better out of the box superior drummer integration, yes its good but I feel it could still be a little easier. that being said I went from a td 17 to a td 27 last month and im extrememly happy.

I don't know. There's a lot of 'hows' and 'whys' associated with this concept. In theory I can see potential, but I'm left with a lot of wondering how it could work practically, and more importantly, whether there's a big enough market for hybrid acoustic/electric drums. Most drummers either lean towards one or the other because of the style of music they play.
