So true. Google the famous "Desiderata". Theres some great wisdom within that piece...you'll know the relevant line when you read it. I call on this verse in my head often when my confidence is down, it seems to get me out of that & give me drive to push forward, relax & be me (in my design work). Hope that helps ✌️
I like to compare my work and see where i want to get. Of course its disapointing to see that i am not as great as others, but i don't cry about it. I take it as motivation
Just directed someone to this video a few days ago in response to a question. This video still holds up months later and will continue to. Great job Will and thanks again for the shout out!
I've been designing for over 8 years and this is how I make the majority of my income. I was in the middle of work when something relevant came up and I had to find a similar video to fit to write this because it it angered me so. Your client should have an understanding of your work and or experience. There are three different things I want to say; 1. It is a big deal to have some examples of work via portfolio to let your client know you in a graphic sense. If you are NEW and or STILL LEARNING aspects of design, do not think you should go straight into any kind of freelance unless stated or free or fairly/under paid (unless they know your work). Why? It is highly unfair for the CLIENT to get low quality designs at a market price. The graphic industry always makes sure to mention artist protection from non-payment but it should also be stated that fair practice is a must for BOTH sides. 2. Follow clientele guidelines. You do NOT give refunds because they simply dont like it or they no longer need the work. You put time into it- GET PAID. Find a proper payment structure and stick to it, dont get paid AFTER you sent them the final. How many times have I seen someone send in the full vector/file and they dont get paid but strung along for months until they eventually forget. 3. When you send them preview of the works, FOR GODS SAKE, DONT send them a huge screenshot of the concepts. They'll just rip that shit out of your pretty 5k iMac screenshot and alas, you will not get paid. Be smart about your showing off the preview/concepts! Keep them small and marked!
I'd add "make sure you have a written agreement on payment before starting a project" along with "Make sure you agree to a set number of versions and iterations." How many times have we started a project that would be, say a $2,000 logo, and the client expected it to be $200. Similarly, how many times have we done a design that had the client go back and forth dozens of times with colors and fonts (in many cases, ending up with the original concept). I'll be flexible with clients if the designs miss the mark because of something I did wrong or didn't understand the client's specific needs - so I guess a final add would be "Make sure you communicate extremely well about the project parameters before starting." I'll often ask a client about designs that they like - sometimes you can get a feeling for a style that would resonate with them. To quote the great Saul Bass, we would have to add "learn to draw."
Those are really nice realistic tips. I was a bit shocked about "get paid" thing, because i way just about to do some "free" stuff to "clients" just so that i get actuall real live assigments to practice. Dont get me wrong i am doing this as junior designer like a year ago, and dont even plan on going freelance for atleast 5 years. And for me the big part is to come up with imaginary concepts for non existent things. I dont think i can develop good skills to make an infographic with made up objective.
Great inspiration thank you.. I am freelance graphic designer. I got 2 clients at the same time. One asked me to end the contract and refund the payment. And other said great work need more work. I really understand how positive we need to be when facing criticism. we should never stop at failure. success is out there. :)
Ok you had me at "stop doing free work"! You described me too well, which is actually comforting, because I'll take it to mean I'm not alone! Thank you
Yep, not doing anyone any favours. Better to start at a smaller hourly rate to gain experience & confidence & a portfolio, then gradually increase your rate as you feel you are gaining more knowledge & working faster.
why do they even leave a dislike for this video or any video of yours. Mate you are so trustfull, and friendly thanks for sharing all of those videos with us. I'm following some people on youtube to be greater then where am i right now. You are in that group, giving beatifull motivations, and ideas. Keep it up !
Thank you for this video, I am a design student. Our assignment was to view a video on logo design and the title of yours was perfect for a new designer. I loved your advice, I think it was very encouraging. Thank you again and may God bless you and your career.
I think its alright to do free work as a beginner who is trying to build their resume or portfolio. But this is the first time I've heard this perspective on free work and I find it very interesting and understandable. Great point, Thank you!
I feel so comfortable right now and even if was not your intention at the beggining i must say that you really inspired me to keep going on. Thanks a lot, for sure i'll remember this 4 things all my life.
A valuable lesson I learned early on is not to take criticism personally. Letting go of any direct emotional attachment to a design is a good idea. Your design is the property of your client from the get-go (post deposit paid) & you are just offering your time & services. I found this helped with staying focussed on what the client really wants. As with any rule, there are always exceptions. Will Paterson - your video production / lighting is very good quality. I remember from video production in the (ahem) 80s, you can buy a can of spray for your glasses to cut out reflections. Hope thats useful. Thanks 🙋
Hi Will, thank you for great content. A tip you could consider, is to use a circular polarizer filter on your camera lens to eliminate the reflections on your glasses.
Personally i love your videos, not exactly the content, but the style you present them, and the love for design i can feel radiating from you. My only problem is (and its the same with Robertos videos as well) that they lack actual technical implementations or tutorials....nonono wait more like EXAMPLES , yeah that is the word i was looking for. I mean for me a seriously junior designer, the hard thing is to make sense of it all, and when someone guides you trough the process of actually making something, its so revealing. Or even better, gives you an real live assignment and helps you out with the technical stuff, you just need time to develop anyway.Or atleast thats me.
Good points! I wish I knew most clients will come in at an extremely low rate and really put in more effort on legitimizing why your time isn't worth your price. Like most things in life, you have to prove your worth. I totally agree on not doing free work. I do, however, still offer a tfp for models in my photography side of things. I feel if I can use the images and not have to pay for their time, but they can use my images and not have to pay for my time, it seems some what equal. Plus I get to experiment with new concepts or test new equipment.
From what I've had the opportunity to witness and get involved in: Negative criticism does not care about contributing. It insults: it is mostly about the person taking some satisfaction in depreciating the others in order to feel greater and nicer, and anyway shoving his/her frustration on an easy target - so it's more about their personal satisfaction than caring about you. Positive criticism can be straightforward, but without insults, without depreciating, even if the comments may require the receiver to put his work or himself into question. Positive criticism cares about truly contributing and helping the person forward and up. I think we could know when it's either about the other person's own satisfaction, or about us and truly caring and helping us. Thank you for your videos and honesty :)
I'm really glad I found your channel. I'm in school and I want to go into graphic design in the future and I was watching Roberto Blake to find out some info on it. But somehow his videos made the whole concept of graphic design seem really intimidating and scary ( just my opinion) but you make it seem a lot more of a reachable goal and now it seems a lot more fun 😊 Thank you!
I just found your channel and I'm hooked! I'm a graphic designer but I mostly do signage and advertising and I want to branch out to logo design but it's so incredibly intimidating to me. This video was really really helpful thank you so much.
Great video! Good points you spoke about. I have just started Designing for my blog and it is taking sooo long to do the smallest design because I am so new! But it will get better!
I had given up my freelancing graphic design after some really discouraging clients that I've worked with and this video has really inspired me to keep going. Thank you!
This isn't the type of video I was looking for. I was just curious about tips on how to do it. However, I really appreciate the information in this video. I think this can apply to many things.
Thank you very much for sharing what you have been learning ,i'm just a teenager wanting to start a freelance business and i'm taking everything you're saying into consideration as it is so helpful ;)
Your videos teach me a lot every time. Constructive criticism is good, but guys out there don't suggest though, they just select instead. Worth subscribing ,thanks
Desiging isnt easy, and so are finding clients. Some clients arent the best but they're part and parcel of freelancing. Some may wish to end the process halfway after months of work and some may rush work from you. It isn't always easy but keep going because you'll keep growing creatively 👍🏼
Starting out as a Graphic designer, I wish I valued my work and myself more. I wish I went harder. I wish I didn't let go even for a bit. Thanks so much for this video! It confirms a lot on what I thought I should've done. It's rather encouraging
I've been watching Roberto Blake's channel for quite some time now and I remember watching that video where he talks about charging people for your work. So currently I have been doing some freelance work for about a year and right now I'm designing a logo for one of my old neighbors tattoo company. She is also in the kind of creative profession, she's a photographer and does some advertising here and there. She told me that in order to build my business and grow as a designer that I need to charge dirt cheap for my work and also do alot of free work. After watching this video I feel that it's okay if I charge what my work is worth.
Hi Will Watched this video yesterday and just had to subscribe to you and to Roberto Blake immediately. Your vid inspired me to start working on doing stuff I have been wanting to do for 20 years now but never before thought I was good enough. Your vids are great, lighting setup is on point. Keep making us vids dude! ;)
I'm a motion graphic designer and I really enjoyed this. The repeated jump cuts were a bit distracting. Shoot with 2 angles or just reshoot it for a smooth run.
Thanks for the constructive criticism part, I used to beg for people to tell me something they didn't like, but too many try to be nice. Don't be afraid to speak up, it makes you a better designer!
Hi will! Just so you know you are my INSPIRATIONAL HERO for the art! :3 suggestion: balance out the lighting on the right side of your face since the light of the window is casting a small undertone shadow. But it's not that noticeable. Love the setup now where you did your vid ;) I have a question: lets say you have a job interview Is it okay to show your "best" and "not so best" outputs on your folio? Just to say this is my best works and this is my normal works on a normal day when you're not in the mood or uninspired.
Izzy Puddy Thank you for the advice! I'll be sure to take that on! Never show your "not so best work" because that to them is "bad work". You need to tell you interviewer exactly why you are better than anyone else coming into the interview. You've got to know you are the best, and be seen as confident. If they ask you, "How would you rate your skills out of 10?" You NEED to say 10!
I just found this channel in my suggested videos and I enjoyed the video and subscribed! I love to hear this kind of encouragement. I am just getting started in the design and RUclips field and these tips are really good to know, thanks Will!
thank you !! you and Roberto Blake just gave the best advice i've had in a week than a year in front of a fake a** (I mean apple, :-) ) teacher behind a desk !! much love and good things from Paris !
"Stop Doing Free Work". I agree. Once my friend asked me to do re-brand his product he sells, for free. At the time I wasn't really mind about it, because I thought I will get free advertisement for free as well from him, knowing he sort of well connected. But when I almost finished my design, I thought, "why do I do this for free when I put and pour my mind wholeheartedly in this project, this isn't right." I mean, the thing/design I made was not for practicing, I'm doing something for business, mine and his. At the end I decided to cancel the project. Watching this video now, I know I made a right decision back then. Thank you so much for the video. This is very inspiring!
I started watching this video because a friend of mine asked for help in designing a logo. As an amateur artist who's never done professional work of any kind, and instead focuses on character design, I have to say I was feeling pretty unqualified to answer the question. In short, I feel that this video's title was just a little misleading, in that I learned not a single thing about logo design as an art form. That being said, it was a fantastic and inspiring bit that I feel can be applied to almost all creative outlets(particularly those for which you are commissioned and paid). Very well done, Will, also you're a gorgeous and charismatic man, you are. I'd trim those neck whiskers, though.
+Jack K Almost forgot to mention, not a fan of the pinstripe t-shirt. Try horizontal stripes, plaid, a sweater or even an ironic tee. You might like it.
Thank you for the advice! I can't decide on a style because of all the amazing stuff i keep seeing online... It's a curse & a blessing for sure. Thanks for all your tutorial videos, yours are one of the few that I enjoy watching.
Thank you I had some bad feedback today from someone I was just trying to practice with and made me want to give up but while watching your video I have come up with a new angle I can try.
Can you make a video about what are the most ideal computing needs to be a graphic designer like how much memory, storage, CPU, and many other things that you must have on your computer to be a graphic designer.
excellent video couldn't have said it better. all my work i have to do for free in my job bit annoying but i wish all the logo designer's a very pleasant future in designing. and good luck to all.
Hey! I am interested in logo designing and graphics! Do u mind directing me to some good tutorials? Im good with computers! I badly wanna learn this stuff coz this works excites me! I feel happy doin these things 😅 please do guide me!
Hi Will. Thanks for your video which is very informative. Yes, your glasses are a little bit distracting because of the glare that is on them but your content is most important.
+Will Paterson Going to need to do a Hangout on Air again soon about the collab videos! Also I will be featuring you in an upcoming article about design inspiration on Instagram!
Great video! I am not a logo designer, but a game developer. Another related subject to this is "Imposter syndrome" I think. Sort of the feeling that you should be better because you charge for your work and so on. It is important to remember that no one is perfect and knows everything. I am trying to think "As long as I still learning new stuff I am good". Also another expression I like is "An expert has done all the mistakes". This should imply that he/she also learned from those mistakes though :P
First time I have watched your channel. So this is my first video of yours that I'm watching... If that makes sense.... And wow man some really motivational stuff, especially towards the end. Thanks man.
+shuvadip sana It is kind of a scummy thing to do, to advertise your services on another designers channel... it also comes off as rude and desperate. Designers are watching this channel, why would they hire you? It just looks bad....
hahaha exatly and he commented on my comment. But another awesome youtuber. Man this is cool. As a designer what are the 3 things that keep you motivated.
great stuff Will, I really needed to hear this right now, but I think it's no big harm to make 2-3 logo designs for free at the very beginning, it depends on the situation.
I've decided to be done with school, as the time, money, and energy spent could be used collecting and applying tutorials towards the craft. Will got any projects I could work on for some $. I'm a new designer, got to start building my portfolio and I'd prefer to be mentored by you as you are prolific and earning a living in this field. I'm happy to promote you and highlight youtube videos you have already done to show how they directly impacted completing the work you shoot my way. Thanks in advance for your help, and all the work you do to make quality vids! Roberto Blake also a virtual mentor of mine.
Can you do a video of your set up. I can almost see it but I want to see what the 2nd monitor is... haha i like seeing other designers workstation setups. Looks good!
Joel Velasquez Sure thing, I don't really use the other monitor very much, it just makes it easier to see skype convos :) I'll deffo do a video though :)
Hey, im a recent follower of your work, im finishing my graphic design studies in Paris next year, how do you go trough the process of making your work ready and perfect for printing? Do you made a video about that topic already? i would love to hear from you a list of things we should take in consideration before printing something, tips or even ways to experiment with printing. This question poped in my head wondering what is the black computer you have in the background for? Merci :)
What is your advice to people who lacks confidence and thinks that their work is somewhat mediocre. I really want to pursue this field, but there are a lot of things in my mind like doubting my skill and myself.
Thanks, m new to designing and as u said I really at one point gave up. Where m from designing is considered like oh designing yeah that's an OK job. But I wanna improve n someday change this thought.
You are crazy informational. I found your channel on UCreative. These are all things I wish I had known myself, exactly! Your creative process what eye opening as well! Thank you!
Will Paterson I don't have the exact link right now. I could find it at a later date and send it. But it was "Top 10 RUclips Channels To Subscribe To" Not sure of the number you were at, but I follow everything you have. VERY well done!
I'm currently at the stage where I wanna give up graphic designing since I have always compared my work with the rest of my class mates at college, coz they have always got better grades than me. I actually felt useless until now :') . What you just said had me going like 'what was I even thinking?' LOL . Thanks alot for the advises , you are the best :)
Great video. Loved seeing design process' in the background, gave me motivation to get some portfolio work done. Subbed and looking forward to seeing future vids!
Great video! I wish I knew how to price my designs better. I took a course in college on it but I still get hung up and "wing it" when it comes to pricing.
Hello, I just wanna say thank you so much! I had some trouble with my homework for college. Anyway, I made dozens of logos and none of them were good xD And dear sir, your videos saved my bottom :P so yeah, keep up the good work!
Hy.. thank you for sharing this video. It's still a month I'm working in creative field. So I need to learn much. And when I saw this video it just exactly what I experience now. It's all true and I know now what I have to do. Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
when I was at grafic school, most teachers told me that theres no place any more in the wolrd for creative designers, that it isnt worth it amymore to be a Freelancer..... The funny thing is that I know a lot of people that do freelance and create there own thing, and they can make a pretty good living of it. So DONT let anybody tell you( regardless of the position) that there is no place for your ideas.!!!
+Andreas Antoniades there's this thing called not being born into a filthy rich family. Worry about yourself. Some of the most successful people of all time came up from nothing
Thanks, nice vid. Wish when I started designing logos I knew to have a notebook or pad and pen or pencil at my disposal at all times, especially in the beginning when ideas are generating even when you're not trying to. Notepad bedside, no joke.
The biggest challenge for me is to not compare my work to others. It's easy to feel intimidated.

New Illustrator Tutorial video tomorrow!
can you do me a logo
R13_RawAngelo I'll make you a logo. What are you looking for?
Just what I needed to hear - don't give up, don't compare! I have such a problem with that... Thanks for the vid!

Great video with good information. I would suggest getting things in writing. Contracts, ideas, side conversations. It all is important.
I'm just starting out on my freelance design career. What fantastic, positive advice. Thank you.
Great video! Good points you spoke about. I have just started Designing for my blog and it is taking sooo long to do the smallest design because I am so new! But it will get better!

The word you were looking for: Perceived value - When you associate the value of something with how much it costs
Made me even more motivated to start logo designing

Hi will! Just so you know you are my INSPIRATIONAL HERO for the art! :3 suggestion: balance out the lighting on the right side of your face since the light of the window is casting a small undertone shadow. But it's not that noticeable. Love the setup now where you did your vid ;)
I have a question: lets say you have a job interview Is it okay to show your "best" and "not so best" outputs on your folio?
Dude... Your list is like advice for life in general. *sniff *wipes eye corners. ;)
+seangrahamfilm hahahh
thank you !! you and Roberto Blake just gave the best advice i've had in a week than a year in front of a fake a** (I mean apple, :-) ) teacher behind a desk !!
much love and good things from Paris !
Hi Will! Have been watching so many of your videos lately. Learning so much! Thank you for making them!
I'm so glad I found your channel! I recently decided to get into design and your videos add a TON of insight and inspiration!
Thank you for the advice! I can't decide on a style because of all the amazing stuff i keep seeing online... It's a curse & a blessing for sure.
Thanks for all your tutorial videos, yours are one of the few that I enjoy watching.
wow, very much entrepreneurial thoughts i already read in books!!! you know very well what you are talking about :)
:D
Thank you I had some bad feedback today from someone I was just trying to practice with and made me want to give up but while watching your video I have come up with a new angle I can try.
Can you make a video about what are the most ideal computing needs to be a graphic designer like how much memory, storage, CPU, and many other things that you must have on your computer to be a graphic designer.
is there a tutorial on the logo on his monitor?
excellent video couldn't have said it better. all my work i have to do for free in my job bit annoying but i wish all the logo designer's a very pleasant future in designing. and good luck to all.
I love the Gold Digger background in the back!
You have truely spoken wonderfully, honestly and in an inspiring manner 👍
Haha just came from a Roberto Blake video. Small world :)
+Revan haha
+Revan Will is awesome, it is a small world and don't be surprised if you see us collab very soon!
+Will Paterson Going to need to do a Hangout on Air again soon about the collab videos! Also I will be featuring you in an upcoming article about design inspiration on Instagram!
Roberto Blake Do it! Would love to be on the Hangout. I've got a couple surprises for you too! ;) Thanks for all your support Roberto! :D
I love this set up! We get a little inspiration in the back while you're talking :)
Jenna Rabel I'm glad you like it! I've got a few ideas on what to do for the tutorials to make them a bit different!
Books are so underrated! Wish I started reading a long time ago haha
Mmmm free work. On point there Will!
Thank you so much it s like me talking to my self, you really mentioned every thing I go through. Keep up
First time I have watched your channel.
As a designer what are the 3 things that keep you motivated.
ross turner it's not really any different than what motivates me in life... challenging myself, adventure and experimenting.
Roberto Blake thanks a lot for your response. Its much appreciated. Always cool when a youtuber replies B)
great stuff Will, I really needed to hear this right now, but I think it's no big harm to make 2-3 logo designs for free at the very beginning, it depends on the situation.
Absolutely love the background music.
+Espen Lillejord Thanks!
Man, what a crucial message. Really needed to hear this. Thanks man.
I really want to pursue this field, but there are a lot of things in my mind like doubting my skill and myself.
really helpful advice. Practical , experienced and to the point.
Do you have some sort of LUT on your video? It looks sort of hazy.
Fuck it! I thought you would teach me something about logo design but all your 4 points are relatable to any creative design process
Thank you!
+Kyle W. Knapp Nice! Where about on UCreative?
Will Paterson I don't have the exact link right now. I could find it at a later date and send it. But it was "Top 10 RUclips Channels To Subscribe To"
Not sure of the number you were at, but I follow everything you have.
I wonder what u got on today 🖤
Great video. Loved seeing design process' in the background, gave me motivation to get some portfolio work done. Subbed and looking forward to seeing future vids!
Thanks mate you gave me the initiative to continue ! Thumbs up for +Will Paterson
really encouraging video, and intelligently put, if I may say.
Great video! I wish I knew how to price my designs better. I took a course in college on it but I still get hung up and "wing it" when it comes to pricing.
You owe me 10 bucks for this div
Hahha
Hello, I just wanna say thank you so much! I had some trouble with my homework for college. Anyway, I made dozens of logos and none of them were good xD And dear sir, your videos saved my bottom :P so yeah, keep up the good work!
+Dominik Perovic Thank you for the comment! I love comments like these, I'm so glad these videos are helping you!
Solid video and I like the shout out to Roberto Blake ...GO!!!
+AbleAbeStudios :D
+Will Paterson roberto is great!
Hy.. thank you for sharing this video. It's still a month I'm working in creative field. So I need to learn much. And when I saw this video it just exactly what I experience now. It's all true and I know now what I have to do. Thank you👍🏻👍🏻
Recently come acrss your channel and I find it really helpful. Could you do a video on the essential equipment you need as a logo designer? Cheers 👍👍
Thank you so much for this kind words. Good luck in your endeavors.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching the video!
great advises!
i totally agree!! even though i'm new at this...
Very much liking this video not only cause things you say are very true but I like the style of video so keep it up man !!!
These tips really helped me alot understanding some fundamentals, thanks!
when I was at grafic school, most teachers told me that theres no place any more in the wolrd for creative designers, that it isnt worth it amymore to be a Freelancer.....
The funny thing is that I know a lot of people that do freelance and create there own thing, and they can make a pretty good living of it.
So DONT let anybody tell you( regardless of the position) that there is no place for your ideas.!!!
heck yeah dude. good to hear this stuff.
HI IM A ART DIRECTOR BUT LOOKING TO GO INTO DESIGN...DO U THINK ART DIRECTORS CAN MAKE THIS CHANGE especially when design is so technical?
I'm a graphic designer too and i really like the way you explain our work :D thanx .. just subscribed to your channel ;)
Thanks young man. Your video has been very inspiring for me.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get into logo design with apps on my phone and this answered some questions for me
Apps on your phone? What are you 12?
+Andreas Antoniades there's this thing called not being born into a filthy rich family. Worry about yourself. Some of the most successful people of all time came up from nothing
How is it going ,man ?
Great vid, really inspiring to me as a new comer to design!! Love your work!!!
hi, i wanna know how i can do any design with a golden ratio , please if you can explain it then i'll thankful to you .
AWESOME VIDEO! Thanks for The Advice/Pep Talk.
Thanks, nice vid. Wish when I started designing logos I knew to have a notebook or pad and pen or pencil at my disposal at all times, especially in the beginning when ideas are generating even when you're not trying to. Notepad bedside, no joke.
Joseph Conti Indeed!
Very good work Will! Thanks for sharing.
