advice from someone that has lived in the country, about a half-hour from you guys, for my whole life. Your stove is where it is because it needs to heat the entire house in the winter. Getting a load of logs and cutting them into firewood will save you guys so much money in the long run. Putting it in that corner will mean that a lot of the heat that is generated will be going outside! Love what you're doing with the place and totally think it all makes sense, but i just saw that and wanted to offer the advice! Edit: Also remember that glass lets a lot of cold in and lets a lot of heat out, so the sliding glass door at the foot of your bed, while nice, will make for a freezing bedroom and some cold toes come winter!
I concur with your assessment, though instead of a slider in the BR, insulated French doors would be a better choice. That space is pretty small a having doors that op n up onto a deck would go far to make the space more livable.
@@Swimdeep insulated French doors was exactly what I was thinking too! And the maintenance is way easier on them and they are also way prettier than sliding doors! 😊 and you can order screens for them also! So you can enjoy laying in bed with a breeze in the summer! 😊

Love your cabin! One reason your stove is where it is so that the heat coming out of the back of it can get into the bedroom behind. If you put the stove in the corner of outside walls, you lose the heat out the back.
Also, you ideally want your chimney closer to the ridge of the house. At very least, chimney should be higher than ridge of house, to get proper drafting.
And remember that most of the time you will spend huddled around the fire will be those long dark winter evenings - when you won't be able to see the good view anyway.
Hi, wish you the best on this new project. Here's some ideas for winter, which is coming fast, I live in Gatineau, so we are probably gonna have similar weather. Primero: If you have the money, redo the insulation. The whole place doesn't seem to have a vapor barrier to protect it from water damage. #1 Remove current siding and seal the exterior walls & windows with Tyvek (Good air/vapor seal is more important than R60 walls) #2 add 2-4 inches of panel insolation on the exterior. #3 Put back siding #4 Remove all batt insulation inside #5 Install new batt insulation #6 Cover with a vapor barrier (Try to prevent any wholes like a electric plug fixture) Repeat all this for floor and roof if you have the time. Roof would be the most impactful change honestly. This will drastically increase your comfort level and the amount of wood you'll need to burn. Segundo: Change the wood stove for a more efficient furnace(or add) and find a way to circulate the heat in the home (Cheap idea is open concept + fans). Tercero: Change the windows ASAP. Double pane. Triple pane would be a waste of money on an old cabin. Take your time doing the details during installation to prevent water leakage and creating an air tight seal.
I was looking at it thinking how cold it's going to be with just that wood stove, and not much insulation. But doesn't open concept require a main support beam across the ceiling? That's thousands of dollars...
@@jonap5740 agreed, I would go cheap open concept. Keep the columns. Maybe have some walls go 80% with an opening at the top to encourage air movement and allow natural light in.
Bec, I just wanted to let you know that you are doing great. After watching your last video I could not have related more to what you were feeling, and seeing you in this video shows me that you are going to get through this hard time. Don't down play your feelings just because you think others have it worse. That might be true, but your feelings are just as valid. Love you guys, keep it up, or don't, and take a break if you need to!!
So happy that you have taken some time for yourself. I was once told that you can’t give yourself if you don’t love yourself first. We love to watch your adventures. Our daughters are just starting to spread their wings and I hope that they enjoy life as much as both of you. Enjoy!
Yeah you could really hear it in yourv voice last week...you were trying so hard not to cry when your friend was doing your hair and heading to the chia place....we will all be hear for you.
I don’t think that is true. All radiators work by being placed at outer wall, usually under a window. Baseboard heating same way. A wood burning stove Can easily warm that cabin being moved 8 feet over to the corner wall.
I agree a wood stove is more about function so you really should keep it where it does the most good, plus the reason for moving it doesn't ring true, if you're sitting and watching the fire 🔥, it's most likely night time, and therefore you won't have a view out the windows anyways...because it's dark 😜. This is my 1st comment, though I've been a subscriber for a while now. I love watching your vlogs and really enjoy living vicariously through you guys until the day I can hit the road. You guys have gone to some amazing places and as I watch I am just so looking forward to my own future travel adventures 😊 good luck with the cabin I'm excited for you as you begin this next chapter and looking forward to watching you go through the process. Much love, Myra
They could add heating systems in the floor and move the stove, having into consideration that looks actually in the middle and a new space distribution will be affected.
Other thing to remember is chimney clearance. it needs to be 2 feet above anything within 10 feet on the structure. With where it is now, the interior single wall chimney is acting as a radiant heater in the loft as well. With the pitch of the roof, if you move it to the corner, you'll need to have a very tall and expensive outdoor chimney, because you'll need to get double wall pipe for that length of exhaust.
I love the cabin, amazing potential! Note about the wood stove, when it's your heat source it's usually placed intentionally in the centre or heart of the house allowing it to radiate heat efficiently throughout the house. You'll lose alot of heat placing it in the corner by the window and that means burning, cutting, packing and stacking alot more wood. Your cabin is an amazing find, I look forward to all your upcoming vlogs!
I would change the stove to a Natural stone stove, I live in Sweden and we have a lot of them because they retain the heat much better and continue to heat your home even after the fire is out and it does not get crazy hot. Perfect when Bec’s wants to do coffee commercials by the fire😊 Great video and I am so looking forward to see the progress!
Never leave fire wood close or stacked against the house it could contain termites which can do significant damage. It should be stacked be 25 to 50 feet away from the house to protect it.
OMG! Beautiful find! Beautiful Property!! However, the best place for your wood stove is in the center of the space to provide as much heat to every room. Moving it to an outside wall causes a great deal of lost heat. Plus it can also cause the wall to sweat and over time creates possible moisture and mold damage. The stove is in a good place. As you sit and look outside, it warms your backside. Enjoy the adventure. God Bless...
@@eamonandbec Heyyyy y'all I hope you saw that outstanding post from 6 hrs prior from people that live right near you 'Jadon Clow' is channel name ... now THAT would be a wise idea to get meet and get connections with people close by with the real life info you really need i.e. stove must stay in central place in the interior of home not an outside wall etc.
Love it! Suggestion: Put a deck on the outside of the glass wall and turn the glass wall into sliding doors!! It'll be great in the summer to open up the living room.
I absolutely love your cabin. Bec I'm glad you are feeling better. You two brighten up my Sundays. Weird question, I noticed your boots, cause I love footwear, and was wondering if they were a product by Xeroshoes? Keep on keepin' on.
These are great ideas but they are really only suited to warm climates. Folding doors and sliding doors, anything with lots of glass, lose so much heat and they leak air. They aren't worth it. You'll regret it when winter comes. It you want an all glass room create a 3-season room that gets closed off when it gets cold.
I can’t tell you guys how your channel has been a lifesaver for me right now. Three weeks ago I had a major spinal fusion and I’m stuck laying in a chair for two months while my fusion heals and your channel really keeps me feeling happy each day. From someone who loves having a wood burning stove. I would recommend sorting substantial wood storage if what you've got isn't enough, you'd be amazed by how much you'll get through in winter. Gla your feeling better Bec, loved the video
Eamon’s excitement to start a have a shed and settle down briefly is so refreshing. I love y’all so much and I love how you’re not ashamed to have a few weeks to break down and figure stuff out but then you grow from the experience and I get to witness that growth. Amazing.
I literally watched the intro... And then you enter the cabin with Bob!! I'm sooo happy you included him. I was worried about leaving him behind. Omg...Sophia could cheer up any soul. She is precious 🥰
@@eamonandbec ok, so that makes sense why you'd do a fully new van and also buy a cabin. I was wondering if the cabin idea came about while building the new van as a direction change.
Please remember to schedule time away from the cabin. When you worked on your new van build you could walk away and decompress at your rental condo. But now you’ll be living in the cabin (or the van) during the demo work so it’s very important to plan mini vacations or decide only to work on the weekday with set hours. You will get the demo done and it’s going to be beautiful, but don’t neglect yourselves. We don’t mind if there are activity gaps in your RUclips channel - we’re a patient group who’ll be waiting for your next video. Best of luck!!!!
Loveeeee! So happy for you guys! One warning from experience. You do NOT want a sliding door. French doors are much more Energy effecient. I used to have to tape plastic around mine in the winter to keep my living room warm. SUCH a pain!
Now this is content I can't wait to see more of. Just what you did with clearing out and re-purposing the work room area, I can't even imagine what you two will end up doing with the entire property. Looking forward to it.
My husband and I would actually love to help. He’s extremely handy, I’ll get into anything, and we’ve both been itching for a road trip. Let me know if you want help!! 🥰❤️❤️ Been watching you guys for years
Love the land. Good choice. I’ve been home remodeler for 40 years. 20 years in SF and Currently working on our newish property in Mill Valley. Best advice I give to my clients is take your time to get to know the place. Think it through as completely as possible before execution. Remember “good hat, good boots” for everything between to fair well.
So happy for you guys, looks like you're having fun with all of the projects! And such a beautiful place!! Mold remediation! Don't skip it. Mold can make you sick if left to grow. Put a dehumidifier in the basement, one in the main floor near bathroom/kitchen. I think I remember there being a crawl space that was not sealed (soil was exposed to underneath the floor of the cabin) if that is true, you have to seal it off to prevent mold and moisture damage. I'm sure you know it needs a new roof. Basically, owning a house involves keeping it from being damaged by water, avoiding deterioration, decorations, and you're good to go.
I doubt that a dehumidifier is needed on the main floor. Wood heat is incredibly dry and will do a better job drying out the main floor than any dehumidifier would!.
I’m with Bec making that shed into a tiny home would be an awesome idea... for guests and you might even could turn it into a source of additional income in the future

Yeah! The cabin is beautiful and the land around it is amazing 😍. You guys looks so relaxed but also ready to tackle the cabin. Bob is a fabulous supervisor lol.
That basement was in better shape than I thought, and all of that reusable cabinetry, wood, etc. Wish I could fast forward 2 years and see the results lol I know the stove in the corner is an aesthetic but I agree with the placement, just add blowers as suggested and re-pipe the exhaust. You can put a couple plug in radiators to heat the upstairs when there are guests. I love the idea of an extra cabin, would that become your main or a guest/Airbnb?? If you are planning a cabin, not sure you need to turn that shed into a tiny home, probably need it more as a shed with grounds maintenance a constant. Create a driveway, fix up the grounds....grow a family there, yes??
So glad to see your excitement and plans! What a beautiful location! I have a cautionary note re: renovations - I encorage you to find someone who can help you do some energy modeling before you start adding windows and closing up walls - the house has the potential to be very drafty, and also for the fireplace to back draft... it boils down to physics, the laws of which will always prevail
I'd start by getting a metal roof! Then I think I'd paint the outside of the cabin a lighter color. You guys really have your work cut out for you! Can't wait to go along on the journey each week!
Yes, please... to the idea about coming to stay with you guys in the cabin! Total dream come true. We’ve been following the journey for two years now and you’ve truly been OUR ONLY vanlife inspiration... there’s plenty of vanlife couples trying to do it as good as you, but none compare in our opinion. Even through these various seasons of life (now you’ve transitioned from van owners to homeowners!), you continue to inspire us just the same. Love you both and wish you nothing but the absolute best moving forward ❤️
Love the new little intro graphic! And the whole project looks like a dream! You should watch Room to Improve with Dermott a an on, an Irish architect who does lots with open floor plans and bit windows and outside spaces and Scandi design. It might give you lots of inspiration!
The stove should be as centrally located as possible. It will be more efficient that way. I have lived with wood stoves all my life. You don't put one in the corner.
Hello you two lovbirds...We built a home on a lake too and raised 4 children in the bush..loved everymoment ..now about your woodstove..please get it checked and the chimney too. Have tarps and or a leantoo to keep your wood stored and dry. Invest in a good chain saw..Have a good firstaid kit with water and candles....have fun this winter and enjoy your new adventure. Love the Bay blanket.xoxo
Bec--if mosquitoes love you, start taking vitamin B1 every day and it turns your blood less sweet so the mosquitoes don't bite as much. I learned this from a friend years ago when we were in St. John....I had 42 bites and she had 1!!!
Me too girl. As a fellow mosquito Ontarian they LOVE me. I don’t know if it’s my addiction to Cola or what bud. BUT I found these steps are my go to: (as an Ontario im aware how weather goes from left to right this season ) 1. Shower with IRISH springs (it smells not the best but mosquitos HATE it ) Johnson’s baby Aloe too but that’s impossible to find 2. MOSIQUITO SPRAAAAAAAY. In Canada we have some ass**** bugs. Organic it doesn’t matters. whatever after a shower spray right on term bug cheeks and ear spray lmao . I SWEAR I even wear the kids coil cereenala bracelets for extra and tbh they work decently. 3. BLACK less cotton clothing for fire pits and white less cottons for dummy days. I’m sure there’s 3847482826 others plans but as a vivid GTA litttle exploder that lives outside but bugs hate me ,who has ultra sensitive skin, these have made me be able to live lnaob
For sure they avoid you in black/dark fabric! (but love white/lighter colors). It's the best trick. Vanilla body spray or lavender essential oil work great to keep them away, without toxicity from other sprays. Make an easy spray: 4 oz/125 mL water (metric 💕) 1 tsp/5mL olive oil 10 drops (lavender, etc) essential oil Shake well & apply; skin, clothing, tent, bed, house, dog, etc. 😊💕

Hello! I just discovered your videos by chance last week and my daughter & I have become addicted! We're living vicariously through you. We've had a really hard couple of years. My daughter had life-changing surgery, her father and I are separated after 15yrs married & 25 together. We moved across the US & don't know anyone. Then Covid hit. You make us smile; even through the hard times, you are positive and grateful. And a positive model of what a couple should be like. I wish you continued success and thank you for bringing us a little joy! Now, Binge-Watching time again!
So glad to know Bec rejuvenated herself. So excited to see the finished cabin. Me and Hubby would love to come stay a. few days in renovated cabin. Great job! 🤗😍🙌🏾
Take it one project at a time. We took over a family cottage 20+ years ago. We've done a foundation, bathroom, roof (twice), windows, plumbing, insulated vinyl siding, and now tackling electrical. The most recent addition was replacing an vintage 70s fireplace with an Osburn Woodstove.
You guys have a gem in the rough there! Couple of things about your plans, though... First, make sure your roof is solid and in good repair. No sense pouring money into renovation only to have it ruined by a leak. Second, unless you are going to put in central heating, please keep the wood stove where it is - that central location is helping to heat the whole house, including the bedroom behind it. If you move it into that corner you will lose a lot of heat to the exterior wall and all those windows. And speaking of windows... third, make sure adding the extra windows won't turn your home into a furnace in the summer. If you're set on windows, make sure you include space to hang thermal curtains to help retain heat in the winter, and some form of awning to block some sun in the summer. You have a ton of work ahead of you, but that is the best part of having a new space. Good luck and have fun!
Also - ideas! Outside bath on the deck. Or hot tub. Also, on the piece of land where you’re thinking of building a second cabin - a wooden gazebo style structure could be built, where you could entertain al fresco, have bands, music, whatever. That place has so much potential.
Woooow, guys! You made my evening! Watching you build, gives me such a joy. Me and my boy are currently in a process of building, but dealing with workers is not as fun as 1. Doing it yourself and 2. Doing it with friends.....Well I wish us both luck and when our place in North Greece is ready, feel invited to visit us next to the sea...oh yeah!
Such an amazing project! I stumbled upon your channel because I was interested in van renovations and then was thrilled to find this series. My partner and I actually live in Kingston and dream about doing exactly this. So excited to follow your journey and maybe see you around town, or at a neighbouring cottage down the road, you never know!
As an interior design student I can appreciate the thought of sustainability for this renovation, from saving and reusing material on the property as well as keeping old cabinets in tack that can be donated to habitat for humanity if you don't end up utilizing it
Love this channel so much. The positive vibes, the laughs, the dreaming... makes me excited for Sundays. And Bec... being real about you burnout is total extra points. Your experience is very legitimate and is totally okay to acknowledge. Anyone who doesn't respect your journey is fit for the pit. ...ANYWAY 'scuse me while I go sign up for Trade Coffee...
This so reminds me of my favourite uncle who unfortunately just passed away a year ago’s cottage. I would live there no electricity no plumbing in a heartbeat! I love living in Ontario Canada! Seriously the potential there is everywhere you look. I’m so happy you guys have found such a beautiful place to call home! I can’t wait to do this as well!
I’m loving all the ideas and inspiration you guys are getting! Few things I noticed; as many mentioned, the wood stove is there for better heating of the cabin. And speaking about heating, I’d say you guys should make sure everything is well insulated to make the most use of the heat. The windows across the entire wall and the sliding door will let the cold in like crazy but in order to still find a way to create a space with a clearer view of your surroundings and the lake; I would suggest a greenhouse type of deck because I know the mosquitos and flies will be killer come spring time so the deck would be an awesome place to hang out “outside” but stay protected. Those are just my 2 cents, of course you guys will do what you want in the end and I’m excited to see what y’all decide. Btw I’d love to come help you guys and stay up there! Fellow Torontonian!

Don't move the stove. It is currently more centrally located in the house. If you put it near an exterior wall you will lose heat.
Agreed, definitely don't move it. Looks perfect where it is to me!
Perfect when Bec’s wants to do coffee commercials by the fire😊
Great video and I am so looking forward to see the progress!

What about garage door style windows? I mean I just like all the ideas- just throwing another one out there
No one of those accordion glass doors that fold open and can transfer to open all the way up so its like ur sitting outside wile ur inside
I absolutely love your cabin. Bec I'm glad you are feeling better. You two brighten up my Sundays.
Weird question, I noticed your boots, cause I love footwear, and was wondering if they were a product by Xeroshoes?
Keep on keepin' on.
I love that I idea!
It’s great.
I love u guys sososososo much but I loved your van life!
I’m tired just watching!
Although it was a busy working weekend we all had a blast. Especially my little girl Sofia. “Papa when are we going back?!”

From someone who loves having a wood burning stove. I would recommend sorting substantial wood storage if what you've got isn't enough, you'd be amazed by how much you'll get through in winter. Gla your feeling better Bec, loved the video
Especially considering that they don't have very much insulation (none?) in the outer walls.
Eamon’s excitement to start a have a shed and settle down briefly is so refreshing. I love y’all so much and I love how you’re not ashamed to have a few weeks to break down and figure stuff out but then you grow from the experience and I get to witness that growth. Amazing.

And then you enter the cabin with Bob!! I'm sooo happy you included him. I was worried about leaving him behind.
Omg...Sophia could cheer up any soul. She is precious 🥰
On the contrary... we bought this place as a hopeful sanctuary and oasis for Bob 😊
@@eamonandbec ok, so that makes sense why you'd do a fully new van and also buy a cabin. I was wondering if the cabin idea came about while building the new van as a direction change.
Oh I totally agree!! I was so happy to see Bob at the cabin 😊👍🏼 and, as always, ready to work. Nice one, Bob!
What they said! 👆🏾🥰
Now that you’ve gotten a lot of the stuff out of the cabin I can see the “good bones”. It’s going to be awesome!
Loveeeee! So happy for you guys! One warning from experience. You do NOT want a sliding door. French doors are much more Energy effecient. I used to have to tape plastic around mine in the winter to keep my living room warm. SUCH a pain!

Thank you for spending your Sundays with us Lia!! We love sharing with you 😊
Now this is content I can't wait to see more of.
🥰❤️❤️ Been watching you guys for years
Ideas: 2 swivel chairs instead of the couch so you’re able to face the fireplace and turn to face the windows? Also, hot tub built into the deck???
“It slides nice”

Yeah! The cabin is beautiful and the land around it is amazing 😍. You guys looks so relaxed but also ready to tackle the cabin. Bob is a fabulous supervisor lol.
We feel like we can finally breathe! Amazing to be living in a space that allows for so much exploration and outdoor time!
Yep need lots of insulation for sure
I'd start by getting a metal roof! Then I think I'd paint the outside of the cabin a lighter color. You guys really have your work cut out for you! Can't wait to go along on the journey each week!
I keep forgetting that Bob was a contractor. Always good to see him.
That call for Bob from his Mom is epic...

The stove should be as centrally located as possible. It will be more efficient that way. I have lived with wood stoves all my life. You don't put one in the corner.

I love it all: the views, the cabin, the plans, Bob, you two, and the possibility of joining you at the cabin as a guest!!! So freakin fun!!!
BUT I found these steps are my go to: (as an Ontario im aware how weather goes from left to right this season )
1. Shower with IRISH springs (it smells not the best but mosquitos HATE it ) Johnson’s baby Aloe too but that’s impossible to find
2. MOSIQUITO SPRAAAAAAAY. In Canada we have some ass**** bugs. Organic it doesn’t matters. whatever after a shower spray right on term bug cheeks and ear spray lmao . I SWEAR
I even wear the kids coil cereenala bracelets for extra and tbh they work decently.
3. BLACK less cotton clothing for fire pits and white less cottons for dummy days.
I’m sure there’s 3847482826 others plans but as a vivid GTA litttle exploder that lives outside but bugs hate me ,who has ultra sensitive skin, these have made me be able to live lnaob
@@mzzsiia Dang, you do a lot! I just take B1 and I do have a mosquito bracelet I bought but didn't use it this summer.
For sure they avoid you in black/dark fabric! (but love white/lighter colors). It's the best trick. Vanilla body spray or lavender essential oil work great to keep them away, without toxicity from other sprays.
Make an easy spray:
4 oz/125 mL water (metric 💕)
1 tsp/5mL olive oil
10 drops (lavender, etc) essential oil
Shake well & apply; skin, clothing, tent, bed, house, dog, etc. 😊💕
or try eating a lot of mosquito poison
Or just have a screened porch and you don't have to put anything extra in or on your body ✌️😂
Reusing the old stuff as much as you can is interesting. Outside shower/ "hot tub" eeuuw or sauna (steamroom). Nice views.. Enjoy!
Second the hot tub/sauna idea. That property would be perfect for that.
Diy dutch bath
Big doors put into the deck from the kitchen would totally open up the dining area for bbqs and lake party’s bringing the outdoors in.
Make sure you inspect the roof thoroughly! Enjoy the cabin mates! it is possible to replace single shingles and what not!

Great job! 🤗😍🙌🏾
Did I miss where the hot tub would be? 😀 love that view - congratulations!
When they were talking with Sophia I was thinking AHH THEY ARE GOING TO BE SUCH GOOD PARENTS😭
I’m amazed at how industrious you two are. I’m looking forward to seeing all the improvements!
Eamon!! Happy Birthday to you, come Thursday bro. 🎂🎂
Wow, way to be on it Jacob!!
What?! Happy Birthday Eamon! 🎂🎁🎉Marking it on my calendar for next year.
Great to see you guys back - great work so far, plans sound awesome....lovin' that big deck idea.....congrats!!
My worlds just collided!
I feel u guys should make both rooms downstairs into your master bedroom , cozy and modern
Thank you! Really excited for the deck space too 😊
Also - ideas!
Love the new intro! I'm so excited for this project!!!! You should add an outdoor shower for the summers and a vegetable garden with some fruit trees!
