Batter boards work really well for this, in particular because they are offset from the posts / corners / walls etc. it also makes it very easy to change your lines later, not just to be used for posts, but also for siding, and even with a plumb off rafters edge, to verify roofline is square with stringline between batter boards. and they can remain in place until just after build, if you have a wind event or shifting, etc.

That's an interesting way to do it. I've always just used the Pythagorean.

He did use the Pythagorean method. He determined the diagonal to be 35.1 feet. You can't just measure a 35.1 foot diagonal, place a stake, and expect the other dimension to be 12 feet. Drawing an arc and then measuring 12 feet is the most efficient way unless you want to walk back and forth a dozen times to get things square.
You could also use two 35.1 feet strings on each diagonal and then place a stake where they come together.
