      Holy crap, Didn't even think about that! That's the main problem with these kinds of laser units is they're not gonna last too long if you are running the illuminator and laser for prolonged periods of time... then you gotta fumble around for a battery at night...Maybe someone could come up with a QD battery pack you could add/remove as needed.

    The external power supply is an interesting concept. Having a battery in each device hanging off the end of a rifle (where their perceived weight is greater because they're on the end of a lever, rather than close to the body of the shooter) definitely changes how it feels to point it. I could see an argument for having one single power supply for all the doodads which was mounted closer to the receiver or perhaps even on the shooter's rig, which might also allow you to make the devices themselves smaller since they wouldn't need to accommodate their own on board battery. I doubt this will ever become the standard, but it's kind of a neat idea.

    Hop, have you considered using this laser unit as part of one of your HK modernization projects? With its extremely small footprint you could probably slap it on the side of your PTR 9CT and have a fun little PCC setup for night shoots. Just a thought.

    • @Hoplopfheil
      @Hoplopfheil  2 года назад +29

      There's almost no point since the activation would still suck, and MP5 handguards don't hold zero.

    • @christopherreed4723
      @christopherreed4723 2 года назад +5

      Also the fact that the white light is pretty anemic. If you really must have a laser on your MP5ish the best (OK, least bad) option IMO would be to mount a dedicated pistol laser onto the pic rail on top of the receiver ahead of your optic...if yours has one (pic rail, that is).
      But, again IMO, mounting real estate on the MP5 is so limited that a good, powerful white light* is probably the most you'd want. Otherwise you'll end up trying to wrap your mitts around a forend so cluttered with gadgetry that an orangutan would have trouble gripping it.
      * or maybe, if you run NVGs, a dual white/IR light like a SF Vampire.

The vis laser means you can zero it at home 85% or so without going to the range at night. Pretty compelling package and lots of optionality. There are a couple of points missing. First, white light seems to use switched, not linear stabilizer (note strobe effect when filmed on SiOnyx). This could be pretty bad when used with a body/helmet camera. Second, it's unclear how USB power works together with batteries. Does it have a priority when plugged in even when batteries are installed? That's how Flir Breach works, for example. I also think that the largest USB Type A connector on the other end of that cable is the worst possible solution.

  • @brucetucker4847
    @brucetucker4847 4 месяца назад

    Something to think about with the USB power option: in a SHTF scenario, batteries will disappear pretty quickly and you won't be able to replace them, while you might have a power source with which you can recharge the external USB battery pack. The best LAM on the planet won't do you any good if your battery is dead and you can't replace it. There's also the fact that you can't store the unit with a battery in it so if I need to grab the rifle and go in 10 seconds at night it's a lot faster to plug in a USB cable than to open and close the battery compartment.
    After watching about 6 hours of videos like this and obsessing over it for a few weeks I finally went with this unit for my GPR because (a) I keep hearing, including from this channel, how unreliable and fragile the Steiners are, which takes them completely off the table as far as I am concerned, and (b) I see it as extremely unlikely that I'll ever need to engage any target with NODs at over 150 yards or so (not coincidentally, the distance from my house to the road), and this laser seems adequate for that. In any case my ability to ID a target at longer range than that with any night vision I'm ever going to be able to afford is probably about zero. I also regard a coaxial visible and IR laser as an absolute minimum so I can check my zero against my optic without having to do any target shooting at night.

    In my experience it’s better to just source white and IR light separately as you will get better in that sake and can place those items somewhere else. Then get their le221g model and have IR and green laser separately which doesn’t have dispersion and not worried about placing all the way out front on the muzzle to not cast as lasers don’t usually do this.

    Hated on holosun a lot before for being cheap and patent infringement on US companies, but I have a hs403c with the riser and the only complaint I really have is the red dot isn’t a “perfect circle” but you really gotta focus on the dot instead of looking through it to see it. Not a terrible entry option till I upgrade to an aimpoint t2.

      I made the plunge from a holosun 503gu to a T2 and honestly i like the 503 more and can honestly say I was a little disappointed in the T2. The glass wasn't as clear as the holosun, in that it had a little distortion(and I bought it from Aimpoint direct so no it wasn't a knock off) if you're happy with the holosun don't pay full price for a T2. YMMV.

    I'm not trying to be a dick, these are things I don't know and I don't have the facilities to test.
    Practical examples
    Through a non-magnified tube, what's the maximum distance for target PID?
    Just the same, but how about target PID where there are threat targets intermixed with friendlies?
    When aiming via an IR laser, how far away can a person reliably make hits? For discussion sake, hits inside the C-Zone.

    It's too bad no one offers an after market hot rod ...oops I mean repair service to bump the power up on these units via a 3rd party. I'm wondering if the USB has a programing feature to hack the device and reprogram it to full power. The other possible methods are most laser diodes have a small POT on the diode board to adj the output. It could also be a resister that needs to be removed in the way it's done on some of the handheld HAM radio units . Ahhhhmmmmm.;) I'll let someone else do the experimenting with more techno background to let us all know if it's possible. If so, I'd grab one in a hot second . The only thing that would be cool is to have a LEP (Laser Excited Phosphor ) white light head threaded on .
