- Even if you calibrate for my bias against secondary cells, the Olight Odin IR does not stack up very well against the Surefire Vampire lights. Everybody knows that lumens are a fake number for idiots, but apparently milliwatts can be deceiving too.

@@madstan8948 just don't use the Warcomp as a can host, performance suffers dramatically compared to using either the basic 3P or the SFMB as can hosts.
It would be nice if you can make a WML 101 covering the basics of lights, mounts, tape switches, etc.

Olight is known for over estimating (and over advertising) the output of any of their lights. They regularly underperform compared to basically everything else. And in the same price range, Streamlight also outperforms Olight. Olight is little more than a cheap Alibaba light that through a massive advertising campaign, gained a following of fanbois that don't really care about performance and quality but makes their decisions based on flash sales.
And if you want to go even cheaper Astrolux will do just fine.
I kinda like the rechargable design but that’s about it.
It's not that they over estimate their lights, the lumens are there, but they have really REALLY low candela from either shit reflector design or emitter.
@@robertparis5680 I've seen the light sphere scientific testing of various Olight lights. They generally come in under their advertised output. On the occasion they meet or beat their advertised output, their heat management is so poor that their max output drops nearly immediately. So it's really insignificant if it did actually have the advertised output..even if for even one minute. But yes, of the many issues with their lights and quality, their candela is horribly low. Often times half of what companies like Streamlight puts out. Either way, they're a low performing light with a significant amount of other issues.

Just look at it this way, Olight has given us something Surefire never would, a civilian-legal HE grenade. Now if only we could convince them to make one that's exactly 40mm...

I'm not an Olight fanboy but this rumor gets so tiring. One single guy had his flashlight explode and kill him because he had it in his mouth, working on his car, when he touched the flashlight to the car battery and it overloaded the Olight's battery and caused it to explode in his mouth.
Literally anything battery powered will explode in the exact same way when touched to a car battery terminal.

I know you haven't historically liked Zenitco products all too much, but Zenitka actually has such an illuminator/white light combo available in their Klesch-2. Maybe check it out if you're so inclined.

I have a couple of cheap Olights for around the house and on a pair of glocks that really don’t leave the safe. I’d say that you get what you pay for with olight. I’ve had more than 20 surefire lights through the years, only two minor warranty issues that they covered with no drama. On any firearm that could be called upon to defend life or limb there is a Surefire attached. Malloff makes great stuff to update the older dimmer Surefire models.
Malkoff heads are great. Brought and old Surefire into the 21st century with one of their heads
Olights just transfers the handheld philosophy of their flashlights to their gun lights and it sucks. Lights should be lighter using 18650 or 14500 batteries, they should focus on having a beam with a strong hotspot throwing far away and a wider weeker flood for close up target acquisition. Their 2 stage switch is crap to use under pressure as well and their remote switch function just dangerous as Hop mentioned in the video. Cloud defensive Rain 2 is the best visible flashlight currently on the market. And the Surefires Vampire the most modular offering actual dual illumination with the same beam pattern.

Another issue with Olight Odins is heat buildup. They get incredibly hot after a short time being turned on, and have literally made my bedsheets start smoking when I set it down on them turned on. They can start fires with ease.

Thank you for this information, Hop. I recently picked up an Olight ALDR S for my nightstand gun. It's rechargeable, has a stupid bright LED white light and a green laser (you don't even need the light at night - the laser gives enough light to see a threat). I have a shotgun I need a light for, and your video has given me some things to consider.
My brother in law is a O light fan and I'm only running surefire, for cheap utilitarian Mag Lites are Ok. I have yet to break a surefire, my brother in law likes O lights warranty, because he uses it.
I've actually gotten into buying cheap used military surefires and replacing the guts of the head with a Malkoff head, works pretty damn good.
I'm more the buy once cry once.

Yeah, Malkoff heads are nice. Bought one for an older Surefire and gave it a new life.

Ended up being able to setup five rifles and carbines that weren't going to get lights with them, tape switches and the flip down IR cover for just under a thousand. Super sweet give the quality and bomb proofness of surefire.

Olights have been having a lot of safety recalls due to spontaneous combustion. Spend the extra money for a surefire.

I tried to build a Vampire/Scout (aka Franken-Vampire)for less than the online prices.
SureFire M600V: $489
Surefire IR/White light head: $250
Arisaka body: $64
Surefire tape Switch end cap: $145
Arisaka Rail mount: $ 48
Project total: $507 (Cheaper to just buy the M600V)
I currently have the SightMark LoPro. Its big and heavy, but provides a green laser, IR light, and Flashlight. I don't use the laser due to my handguard moving; making it impossible to zero. My 5.56 rifle weighs 11.5 pounds and I am trying to reduce weight. The weight of the "Franken-Vampire" is 1/3 of the LoPro. Its a little weight reduction, but counts.

The other thing with Olight rechargeable batteries is that they love to make proprietary ones, so there's always the question of whether any given Olight can run off a standard battery and it doesn't look like this one does.
Even if they don't, they still have their issues. Heard of someone's magnetic, recharge point sticking to his knife in his pocket and warming up before sending sparks when he separated the two.
The 21700 is a semi-standard Li-on battery. Still wouldn't recommend the olight for anything other than a makeshift flashbang. They have a fairly awful reputation for battery saftey.
@@wolfranger7340 Yeah, that's my point, the 21700 is pretty standard (if less common than an 18650), but the one this light, and a lot of other Olights, takes is a proprietary cell the size of a 21700. Notice the double ring on the head end, which means it uses the body tube of the light as a communications line for the tail switch and not for power transmission, which means it wouldn't even work with a standard 21700. Of course that's not the only reason you probably shouldn't buy one, but it would still be a dealbreaker for me even if the rest of the light was fine.

I went ahead and got a Olight Baldr IR a while back and on my 22lr, it does the job for nighttime varmint hunting.
But honestly, for a real "user" life & liberty rifle, or nighttime hunting rifle just spend the money and cry once. I'd say if you want to cut a corner and get something more affordable than a Dbal, Surefire, or even holosun, the Streamlight VIR II is usable, as long as you realize and are at peace with its shortcomings.
I‘ve been using a SF M300V head with a S&S precision M-AX mount on my nvg helmet for a year and it‘s a fantastic system.
I really love the Olight EDC Flashlights. I've been carrying one for several years now and they've never let me down.
Their Tactical or Weapons Mounted lights have never been nearly as well thought out or as good as their EDC stuff. One other aspect of the Odin series I really dislike is that the mount that connects directly to the flashlight body has a bad habit of becoming loose over time, even WITH Loctite.

When you use loctite, you HAVE to use their primer. The primer is required when the metal has any coating whatsoever, and all gun accessories have coatings, especially the screws. If you don't want to use primer, then switch to VC3.

Olight are great toys, don't ever use them for anything your life might depend on. Thing of them as airsoft grade.

Personally I can vouch for the 21700 battery. I have several lights that I have used for many years, and I've never had a problem with one.

Hop check out weltool light heads the things are nutty. I got an lh2 which is the IR head and it performs better than my mawl c1+ on high. Like its kind of scary. If phantom hill continues on with the v2 I might sell the mawl and get that and put the white light head and the IR head on that. Also the white light head is better than an OKW, brighter hot spot and brighter flood section.
The only way you'll find me in a stack, nuts to butts, with the boys ready to breach, is with a fckin x300
Night vision dudes need a white light/ir illumination on their helmets, great setup you have on your helmet.
If you have more disposable income looking for a mediocre IR/White light, Check out the Nitecore CI7. I use the CI6 and its okay, besides the fact that the IR/White light switch over is done by pressing 2 buttons. Apparenlty the CI7 rectified some of those issues.
Also the olight does not fit on the arisaka picatinny mounts. They do fit on the mlok style but there is a notch in between the mounting holes of the arisaka pic mounts that does not allow you to reach the holes on the light.

Olight made some TLR1 lookalike with an IR laser and we tested it out. We could see it on a hill about 500 yards away which I thought was impressive for olight. Still have issues trusting their quality though.
The Olight BALDR IR. I use it as a cheapo IR laser for airsoft, and its sorta OK.

I force makes an IR/White light that is 700 lumens. I have it on my NV a helmet.
I have the surefire 600v on a sub gun with the Steiner TOR mini Ir laser set right in front of a forward grip. Works great.
A follow up video of the m300v light with the otal-c lazer and the mount used would be cool.
Olight was a good learning experience for me. Now I only trust surefire and streamlight.
I own a few of the compact Olight weapon lights. They commonly have 2 major issues.
1) light output degrades significantly and rapidly after a few minutes of constant on. This is a programmed feature to protect from heat damage, caused by overdriving the compact, rechargeable batteries and electronics to very high output levels. The 500 lumen light is only a 60 lumen light in about 5 minutes of use.
2) while the claimed outputs in LUMENS may be impressive, the output in CANDELLA is usually only average, resulting in lackluster overall performance. Lumens is a measure of brightness, while candella is a measure of volume. I have Streamlight lights that claim half of the lumen output of the Olights, but they appear brighter due to higher candella outputs.
On top of that, I have left a couple of honest reviews on their website that outlined specific shortcomings and suggestions for areas to improve, but they refuse to publish them. They will only publish gushing, 5-star reviews.

~$150 for NiteCore I7, dual mode. 5 power levels, remote if wanted, switchable, and vis is 2500 lumens. Not sure what its IR rating is, but it's solid.

Do you think the ODIN” INFRARED (IR) LASER 808NM - 980NM - 1064NM could be used as a IR aiming laser for thermal? Seems to be the same wave length as the mawl clad. I don’t know much about this stuff just looking into it.

Not here to defend Olight but….. 21700 batteries are superior to cr123 batteries with the only “downside” being the extra size and “weight”. Yes it is rechargeable and I guess if you are on a 10 day top secret backyard bbq mission and need a light, then you might run into issues with not being able to just toss the old and replace with a new battery. They have a higher continuous amp discharge rate and higher capacity which is why they are slowly replacing the 18650 cell that is found in most rechargeable lithium battery packs. You forgot one other key point. Cr123s are generally good for 10yrs. Rechargeable generally last maybe 1yr before going dead.
@@jonathanrogers9961 I am not being rude, but I do not know where you are getting your data on that at all. Lithium ion batteries can be stored for years without being charged. They are after all the primary battery used in power tool batteries, electric cars, drones etc. All batteries begin to lose power as they sit idle. While I agree that non rechargeable lithium batteries do have a “longer” shelf life, it is a minimum advantage. The advantage in capacity and ability to be recharged is such an advantage over a disposable cell with the average life cycle being 300-500 discharge cycles. The only advantage that I can see of a non rechargeable system is I suppose if you are hoarding batteries on storage for the zombie apocalypse lol
@@yankeecantrell incorrect. While they degrade significantly slower than Nimi or nicad they still degrade. I'm by experience they lose 50% of their charge around the 6-9 month mark. Lithium in contrast, if not used, will be good without being touched in 10 years. I prefer lithium I'm my weapon lights as they get used I infrequently and I only change the batteries every 5 years. Vs having to pull them and charge them every couple months to keep them topped up.

Lol, its all about how much cash your playing with. Wide range of NV out there, and a wide range of flash lights. I dont have either of these, but applaud anyone who has made the purchase. Its a big commitment for many.
The Olights I do have I've have never had one fail...Of course I'm not saying Olight is the best but when I've had lights like my Modlite and Inforce light fail on first use it's makes Olight looks better.... Rather than listening to the internet I like to get that first hand experience so I can see the results for myself

The number on lion batteries like that is a size thing. They’re the same tech just more lithium more capacity. Same voltage.
21700 and 20700 are not the same cell. for me 21700 arent an issue since i got other flashlights with those cells
I only have experience with olights and recently had to use it. With about 5-10 minutes of real use, I now see why people aren’t a fan. The brightness was significantly reduced but fortunately it was enough for that short situation. Had I needed throughout the night I would’ve been in a bad spot.
However Olight is better than no light, but save up for better if you can.

I think the firearms community is the only community I have ever heard complain about the use of superior 21700 cells over 18650s.

@@brentmellinger1798 I tried the Odin. It went back.. glad yours was better than mine. For weapon lights I prefer cr123s. They are good for around 10yrs. So I can put it in and not have to worry about whether it's charged or not. I want a firearm that is as reliable and dependable as possible. And I feel a weapon light should be the same.

Hey Hop, great stuff as always. 2 quick questions for you. In your other NV videos you talk about how vis lasers are garbage and not necessary. It seems like they were all the rage a few years ago, were they always a bad concept or are they just outdated? If you have NV, what does the white light do for you?
Vis lasers don't do anything for me but white lights are immediately accessible and for use at all times, not just at night. If you have to peek under a vehicle or into a building or into some very sharp shadows the white light is useful in the day.
@M. Denz I used to think the same thing about handguns (that vis-laser was better than a dot), and I still have a Glock 17 w/ streamlight light+green laser combo for home defense. The “no learning curve” makes it easier for my significant other to use it, and my realistic HD distances are very low.
However testing red dot vs vis-laser at the range (after training with both for a year), on a timer, at ranges from 5-50 yards, I have found the red dot to be objectively better in terms of speed and accuracy (for me). Even a green laser is hard to pickup at times on bright sunny days, and repeatable accuracy is significantly worse, especially at longer distances (which I think are still realistic for outside of the home SD scenarios). So my HD gun has a vis-laser, and my EDC has a red dot. Both are useful, though I think if my partner was more interested/trained more, I would consider going red dot on the HD gun as well.
Also light+laser combos on pistols are too big for many to EDC, and holster options are limited. I’m a “all-the-lumens” guy so I prefer a really good handheld (with Thyrm switchback to make 2-handed shooting sorta doable) to any sort of weak WML.
If you know your enemy has NV capabilities just keep your finger of the IR buttons until you get to shoot each other under 50 meters, otherwise you just give your position away without actually having to use it, at 50+ just aim passively through your red dot sight or get a clip on on it. White light is always handy to see in dark spots or in dark rooms inside buildings or just to blind the sucker that comes at you with NVs, dazzle the fuck out of them with 80.000 candela in their intensifying tubes.
if you're trying to hit hogs from a moving vehicle vis lasers are the best way to do it.

Why would you use a laser in lieu of sights? Can't imagine you're doing it during the day too since the laser would be incredibly hard to see; and at night I'd imagine you're also using a white light which may overpower your visible laser if it's some sort of strong, flood light.

Has Olight stopped using plastic on their front lens? Had mine turn on in a pocket and it melted.
I have a normal Odin that I bought about a year or so ago and the tape switch is absolute garbage. It worked fine for a while but the more that you play with it the less responsive it becomes. It got to the point to where I literally had to hit it to get the light to turn off. So trying to do a momentary with that tape switch just playing around the yard at night turned into a serious fuck this moment. I still have the light on the rifle without the tape switch but I will eventually replace it. The light itself has been great though so it will still hang around And probably go on something that is just for screwing around
If you have the need for an IR light you probably have to money to not have to settle for an Olight.

Curious, why? Seems like you can much more easily recharge 18650/18350s from all sorts of sources, compared to having to stock up on relatively hard to find CR123s
@@jimmyc7269 I would like to know as well. I have been recharging 18650s for more than 10 years. The outer plastic fails before they do in my experience.

I'm done with olight WMLs and hand-helds. Instead of refining a few models to function well they just keep cranking out new stuff that isn't tested enough. I have battery issues and flickering with most of my newer models. While lights like the odin mini and warrior x have decent output and candela they achieve this by chewing up the battery life in the first few minutes of use. My warrior x is a freakin spotlight for about 5 minutes (on and off) and then it steps down so far that it doesn't justify the size. I'd rather pay more and have slightly less output for a better run time. Also the charging cables have shit the bed on me more than a few times.

jah lumen alone doesnt mean anything, its the beam pattern that makes the flashlight
candels is the real number we want, but hardly anybody puts that on their box. Lumens = spill width, candels = the brightness of the hot spot in the middle.

anyway, i have lights with 2000 lumen that reach a lot further than 4000 lumen lights so the later are a bit pointless to me. especially when you can barely see the difference between 2k and 4k lumens on my klarus G15
I kinda like the high spill and wide patterns on some lights. Makes it easier to see around what you're pointing your light. Wouldn't recommend it on a "ranch rifle", or something else you'd use in a field or in a city street, but I think there's something to say about illuminating a whole room with one light.

This is the same issue as the streamlight TLR series. No true momentary. If you only want a fraction of a second of light, you’re SOL. It’s not possible.
Not sure what you're talking about; my TLR-1 has momentary and works just fine for a split second...

-- Well I can't argue that the surefire is better. I own one. But I just put an Odin on my daughter's new rifle (neither of these are IR). I'm impressed with the Odin for the money.
It boils down to this: Can you trust your life to a piece of equipment. I think you can with both these lights. The Odin seems to be more rugged than my Surefire, and in no way shape or form to I feel like it's poor quality.
My friends are big tactical guys, running Surefires and Eotech optics, and my little girl's rifle is met by them with curiosity and surprise with the Odin, and her Romeo 5 XDR red dot.
Anyways, thumbs up.

What IR Laser and switch that activates both is that? Kinda glossed over that. That’s an awesome solution for avoiding a NGAL or MAWL
It's not, I've talked about that setup before and it's really suboptimal
