I've already got my EOTech & riser for passive aiming option, looking to finally pull the trigger on a PVS-14, looks like I found my my IR unit. Thanks Hop!
I've seen a Bushnell IR night vision camera on Amazon for like $160. Reviews say using an additional IR illuminator really helps the camera performance go way up in clarity and distance. Monocular IR night vision camera might be my first night vision. Now if only I can find a IR camera drone for night surveillance.
@nativewarrior5052 that's fine for static observation, but for movement that's not going to work very well for anything past a brisk walk on open, flat ground.
8:35, Hop's voice over recording location changes; much more hardsurface feedback back into his mic... a wall in front of Hop, perhaps even a cubicle or dining room table. I'm always listening Hop. Do not forget.
I got mine in yesterday and played with it on my MK12 Mod H clone and my 11.5” Super Duty last night. The performance is absolutely insane. I’m selling all of my other LAM’s for IRIS series units. I’d say this is actually worth the hype.
I suspect the vis override is a simple resistor on the switch, with the LAM understanding that whatever amount of resistance is the vis override button on the switch.
I was about to say exactly that. It would be easy to check with a multimeter for our edification. But yeah, that’s the most likely way to accomplish this. Edit/Side note: That’s also how most mid 2000’s cars handled steering wheel controls for the radio. It’s just a resistor ladder where each button activates a circuit that goes through a different value of resistor. That way the steering wheel controls can all run through a single wire instead of needing a dedicated wire for each function.
Right. The crane plug can be stupid but if the laser understands the special resistor value then you're good. It would be nice if holosun would publish the standard so other manufacturers can make lasers and switches that work together for this purpose.
The vis override is a second conductor and contact, you can see it in some of the promotional pictures. I did confirm with a holosun employee that the contact that controls the selected mode is the one that is the standard crane position.
2:21, I gotchu. Always appreciate the brevity and respect for other's time. Wouldn't have learned about the Crane plugs if I hadn't stuck with the vid!

I just had a terrible experience with some NV gear and you guys are the only ones who will understand. Bought a Unity tactical Axon for Christmas. Plugged it into my A3 and it had a nice tight fit. Too tight apparently bc when I tried to remove it, the thing wouldn't budge. After much pulling and twisting the whole sleeve of the Dbal came out. Unity basically just said they would replace the Axon wile blaming Steiner for the problem. Steiner wants 100 bucks just to look at it with a 12-15 week lead time. So I spent 170 to cost myself a bunch more money. Merry Christmas to me. Check those little metal contacts on any new tape switch you plan in plugging into your expensive LAM. Make sure they move in and out without binding.
Thanks for the great review, your NV content has taught me so much. I was on the B&H Photo backorder list and was just notified that mine has shipped. Excited to start using it as this is my first LAM.
Even if it only sends binary, it can send a certain set of binary instructions that allow it to be decided by the module once it goes through. Like knocking on a door, you either knock or you don’t knock (1,0). But you can knock in a certain way that is a secret passcode
I think you are right. The unit constantly powering the switch to send the code. That explains why it works in OFF mode. It will possibly drain the battery.
The plug looks like a conventional trs plug, like a headphone jack. Those have three conductors. Two signal, one ground. Ts plugs have the same form factor but only one signal and ground. The trick is that you can use trs plugs in ts sockets and vice versa. The unused signal connection will just be connected directly to ground.
Super excited about these, but might wait a while to see how the initial illuminator adjustment hold up over time. Also will be interesting to see what other devices come out as copies of it and at what price point.
The reason output power doesn't tell you the effective illumination level is probably due to optics. Aspheric lenses are *VERY* inefficient with LEDs when narrowing the beam, with a lot of the light produced by the emitter being wasted to the sides and not being collimated by the lens vs a laser where nearly all the emission can be directed into the optics. Anyone can test this with a lux/light meter in front of a focusable flashlight on narrow vs wide settings.
That vis override has me excited for the 4-in-1 version of this. I own a HS420 and one thing i always disliked was how i needed to spin the knob over from ir to white light. If the future 4-in-1 iris has vis override that lets the white light be activated with a separate button despite being in IR mode, that would be very exciting for me
The laser doesnt HAVE to stay on for vis overide to work. The gun might just have a passive circuit that works when that special button with its resistor is pressed. This would mean that you could bleed some power if you pressed the regular fire button and held it while the laser was off though.
There's always some sort of funk that shows up at Shot Show every year. It's a very hands on trade show with lots of handshaking and fondling of products that thousands of other people have touched as well.
I bet they are doing some kind of duty cycle logic for the vis override. Like it passes battery voltage normally and vis override sends a pwm signal instead.
I dont mean to gloss over the actual content of the video, it was great, but the two scenes at 8:00 and 8:40 should absolutely be high-res backgrounds. Seriously awesome shots there.
My Holosun IRIS showed up today. Took advantage of people not expecting a company like B&H Photo to carry Night Vision and Thermal gear as they had it in stock on release day.

There's probably an integrated circuit in the holosun switch that modulates the signal differently when the different buttons/switches are closed. Most likely the laser always fires vis laser when the switch is closed by the modulated signal. The laser box would be wired this way using integrated circuits (triggering on modulated signal), and they have programmed/wired them to not fire when a DC signal is received (normal crane switch) unless the power switch is at 1 or 2. Power switch can be closed to fire vis laser by a certain modulated signal at any position is my guess
to add on: if they did do it this way it wouldn't have parasitic drain as long as the power switch is set to off, but probably have drain issues would when the power switch is set to lo or hi even with the laser not firing. Should be easy to measure the current out of the battery at different power switch settings.

Vis override working when the unit is switched off is a nice touch. Leave it off anytime your're not using nods & no worries that you accidently left the ir on
This is an idiotic take, You could just leave it on the viz setting when you're not using nods and not worry about the IR going off but then you could leave it on "off" when you don't want viz or IR to go off for various reasons. There is already a vis only setting, You should be able to completely turn the unit off so nothing can turn on because there's times when turning something on would be bad and also the off button should totally kill the power so it doesn't have parasitic drain.
you can send serial data over a 2 lane connection, i2c and i think UART can do it along with power but they probably have some power over serial thing going on to get both power and data through 2 conductors
I think the newer SMS 4-in-1 is only around 8.5oz. I think that would be lighter than any 3-in-1 with a seperate white light. SMS is still king of budget
Picked up 3 of the V2 at $179 a piece. Yeah at that price they blow everything else out of the water. Already have one and it's fantastic, got shipping notification for the other 2 yesterday. Preorder 3 of the extended battery caps too.

I don’t know your take on the SMS HFXC but would love to either hear your thoughts or see you buy one and do a review video of their V2 HFXC. For under 300 bones I’d expect it to be a flop but everyone is genuinely impressed with it according to reviews.
I haven't gotten into night vision yet but I am planning on it. I'd still take the laserspeed M6TR at this point. It's full powered, it's had slightly more time in the market, and that possibility of parasitic drain of the IRIS seriously concerns me. The IRIS will need to have some time in the market before I consider it.
Yo hop, have you tried the Steiner T1Xi? It might be up your alley, and hardly anyone has reviewed it. Supposedly excellent under NV but I'd love to hear your opinion.
Hopefully this and the M6TR helps to drive down prices of QUALITY laser boxes in general down to actually reasonable levels instead of bloated military contract prices. I really hope Eotech does not price the OGL out of the market as its basically an aluminum NGAL with better control schemes and I dig that. Next step is a 4 function laser boxes with an actually good white light component.
I really like the look and potential of the OGL, but honestly even with my VIP pricing, its going to be a decent amount more than the IRIS. Definitely thinking the IRIS will replace my 321, which will be moved to my 10" 300blk where it'll work just fine.

Yo hop, have you tried the Steiner T1Xi? It might be up your alley, and hardly anyone has reviewed it. Supposedly excellent under NV but I'd love to hear your opinion.
Theres a vcsel LS M6TR out now aswell. It's a beast.
...and you better dont forget that cryptic modes and how to switch while beeing under fire.
I can't wait for the sms laser review before the traiffs hit 🥺
Of course they drop days after I bought a zbolt ir blazer and le117 combo, now watch ACAL will actually drop too this year.
Nice!!!Looks solid
I think the need for the tight beams isn't much of an issue for digital night vision since they don't auto-gate like crazy
Yeah but DNV is still much less sensitive.
I really like the look and potential of the OGL, but honestly even with my VIP pricing, its going to be a decent amount more than the IRIS. Definitely thinking the IRIS will replace my 321, which will be moved to my 10" 300blk where it'll work just fine.
Venture surplus gave you looking like a polish Russian Chinese soldier in no time
I have the DRS-TH and loving it. Holosun won me over
Set to release in early Q5
