      +Commonpigtail Be careful with that - etsy has some pretty specific rules about shops that claim to donate money because people have lied about that to make sales in the past. Here's their help article about the requirements: www.etsy.com/help/article/4528

      I would like to start an Etsy shop and I would be really excited to have one but I don’t know if I would be able to handle all of it yet. I would probably want to sell little felt birds or other animals though :D

      I've had one for years now, but haven't taken it seriously. The idea of shipping TERRIFIED me at first, and I didn't feel like anyone would want to buy what I have to offer. *However...* I have recently decided to take it more seriously. I don't want to work for others anymore. I want to work for myself and I feel that I have what it takes to be successful. I believe in my ability to figure things out. 🙃
      I sell "Fairy Dust" glitter, miniature bead mermaids, and, pretty soon, Dragon Eggs. My shop is a fairytale extension of my Professional Mermaid Entertainer business.
      Thanks for the video. I will be watching the series before work this morning to get my through the day! 😝

      I'm thinking about it right now (which is why I watched this video). :D I'm just very unsure about how to go about things. Like, I have to make prints myself? How do I name the shop so it seems serious but still tells something about what I do? How do I price things? Like, I really don't know how to do things properly. And I'm scared of shipping things. XD Since I also have a full time job as a teacher I'm a bit pressed for time when it comes to crating things. But I really would like to start a shop and maybe with time make being an artist my primary job. Also, thank you for an informative and helpful video. :)

    I've liked the idea of starting an etsy shop for a long time, but I find I get tripped up in a lot of those other aspects that you were talking about. I feel like I don't have the skills to create really awesome branding or to do justice to the business side of running that kind of business. Running an etsy shop or a youtube channel or any other kind of online stuff like that really means becoming an entrepreneur in a sense, and I think I regularly let my insecurities get in the way - worrying about not being good enough or consistent enough or not having quite the "jack-of-all-trades" personality necessary for that kind of work.

I think once Im in a larger space and can have a room instead of overtaking my dining room it would be a better time to really think about it.

    I am only 13 and i am considering making an Etsy shop. Pippy Longstocking woah, they didn’t say she should lower the price or anything you’re accusing them of, if I’m interpreting correctly, they’re referring to the international shipping cost. Even if they were just saying they can’t afford them, not everyone has the same privileges you do. This person said they can’t afford the plushies so they can’t buy them, but they also said they love her videos and support her. They aren’t leaching or begging by any means.
      Do you think you’re helping by chasing away supporters? Because you’re not.

    I actually started my etsy shop just a few months ago. I sell handmade fandom inspired bear plushies (benjisbearemporium.etsy.com). you definitely helped inspire me to start my shop. People had been suggesting i start one for a few years, but i wasn't interested until this summer when i was having trouble getting a job for the summer before i went back to college in the fall. I looked at your shop for inspiration, since i was interested in making plushies, too. My shop has been open for a few months and i've made a couple of sales. I am continuing to make my plushies from my dorm room at college and i love hearing about your experience and advice regarding etsy shops.

    I'm starting one soon! I have no idea if it will be successful at all, but I think what I'm making has some uniqueness to it in the way it's made and the general idea of it, nerdy wall art, was something I thought was lacking in the market. I think the hardest thing will definitely be the pricing. The least expensive way I can find so far to ship a canvas is about $12. I'm sure I'll figure out a lot as I go though. Thanks for making this! I'm going to go watch the branding video now :)

    Me lol I’m always writing down ideas and the memo on my phone is full of them plus details about cost, sale price and profits. My Biggest thing is that I want to do this for myself and my future and spend more quality time raising my five kids than working 40+ hours a week outside of the home plus travel time and then rushing to take care of five kids then do it again tomorrow....ugh. I think the bit about the PO [and all of the other behind-the-scenes work] that you mention is incredibly important. So often I sit on hold with USPS trying to figure out why nothing has gone the way it should and somehow 11 packages have mysteriously disappeared into the void. Such a frustrating part of running a shop.

    It's nice to know it may be inconsistent. I am almost ready to post my crocheted scarfs and headbands with fabric flowers but I'm scared I won't sell anything within the first month. I receive SSI so I can only earn so much before I don't need SSI anymore (scary) . So I can either sell too quickly and be in trouble or not sell anything (and feel awful).

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад +5

      If you’re worried about selling too much, just make sure you don’t list more than you can sell! One way to control that is to only list one of each item at a time and manually renew the item when it sells (rather than listing multiples of each).

    Thank you so much for this video Lauren! I often have people asking about the things I make, especially recently at Leaky and have been thinking about starting an Etsy shop for a long time, but until recently haven't really been in a situation that made it feasible to work out all the specifics and invest the time into making different products to sell. I've just graduated from university though and all of a sudden actually do have the extra time to start developing products and seriously consider setting up a shop so this video has been ever so helpful!!
    One thing I 've been wondering though if you (or anyone else in comments too) knows if there are any regulations on Etsy for selling things based on a fictional 'brand' or copywritten work, such as Harry Potter, either directly (such as hand painting phone cases to look like the book covers) or indirectly (such as making beaded radish/dirigible plum earrings)? Thank you so much!! :)

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад +1

      +Ellie Dimambro-Denson There are definitely people who've been told to take items down or even had their shops closed due to intellectual property claims. That's one of the reasons why I don't sell my more Harry Potter inspired designs on etsy even though many people have asked me to. I stick to items based on real animals there, even if they have significance to Harry Potter fans. You need to be careful about how you tag and title your items as well.

  • @amythomas409

    Your videos have been a breath of fresh air for me these past few weeks :) I'm surprised that I didn't find you sooner! I've been trying to knuckle down since the beginning of this year and have started developing prototypes of my own plush toys even though I've been trying to do this previously. I have so many ideas but I work full time and it's hard finding the time to devote to my work. I'm looking to apply for a job that has less hours and as it's in a college it closes during the holidays several times over the year so it means I would get a lot more free time! But is it worth the sacrifice? I would take a cut in pay and I would have to travel a bit further to get to where I needed to go? I have a house with my bf and we are pretty good financially plus we don't have kids as of yet.. So should I take the plunge? 😂

    Hi Lauren, I have a question about starting up an ETSY shop that I'm hoping you can help me with. I have a passion for many different creative products. I make and want to sell candles, soap, door mats, earrings and photographs (printable art). As you can see these are all non- cohesive products. The photography would be a download product. The rest would be a physical shippable product. Should I open 5 different ETSY shops focusing on just one product? Or, do I open one shop and have 5 different categories? It would be nice to keep everything in one place but would this be a turn off to a buyer? I would drive business separately for each product and direct them to the correct ETSY page. Your thoughts?

    Do you have any strong feelings about using Etsy above other online marketplaces. I've heard people complain that it is over saturated and the algorithm makes it hard to locate (new?) shops, but it's also the most popular (and I love it). Despite these problems do you think it's worth it for new sellers?

      I find it to be a double edged sword; it's hard to be found as a small shop, but not impossible, however on your own stand alone shop, unless you have a high following you may never be found.

      +Kiana Diaz I only have experiences with etsy, storenvy, and hosting my own online store on my website. Etsy is my favorite for handmade stuff just because it's a fun community of artists. Yes, it's crowded and tough to stand out, but you also have the benefit of there being many other sellers to relate to. I'm in a bunch of Facebook groups for Etsy sellers and I've learned so much from other people in the same position. And you have the benefit of the site itself driving traffic to you, whereas having your own hosted shop requires you to do advertising and other creative methods of bringing people to your store.

    Is there a video on shipping? Do you decide the shipping price or is decided by Etsy? Do you need to partner with a shipping company or do you just ship it through the post office? If you are shipping worldwide, then how do you know what the shipping cost will be for every country?

    I've been thinking a lot about opening an etsy shop, but I'm super unsure whether it's the right platform for me. I live in Germany and have no idea whether etsy is too much of an international platform for me to handle. I don't want to get overwhelmed with shipping, and the tote bags I make have German words printed on them, anyway... do any fellow Europeans have any experience with this?

    Okay, So I am looking into opening an Etsy shop (was looking at Shopify..but that cost so an etsy shop would be good until I get it all going then can add or switch to Shopify later if I choose) BUT when trying to set up my etsy shop, it is asking me to add a listing before I can even continue setting it up...BUT I am planning on connecting P.O.D sites (like Redbubble, Art of Where and a few others) but I need to complete setting up the store before I can add/connect those sites/accounts... SO how do I get past this situation? I don’t have anything to list until I can connect my POD sites..HELP

      That’s tricky! Things in the shop creation part of the site are probably very different from when I set up my shop in 2010, but if there’s no way around making a listing (which is definitely odd), could you make a test listing for something you’ll be selling and then deactivate it before you make the shop public?

    I opened my etsy shop about a month ago but there's no traffic. Can you please make a video on how to drive traffic to etsy shop.

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад +1

      I had an existing audience from my RUclips channel and original music, so I initially drove traffic to my etsy shop by sharing it with them. Now, I assume that it’s a combination of that and of working on SEO and having good photos so anyone who is searching for products like mine is able to find them through etsy’s search.

    I've been wanting to start an etsy shop for years now, but I'm terrified. I've worked in customer service roles since I was a teenager and the thought of sending my handmade items into the world full of customers that treated me like crap for years kept making me give up the idea.
    I've been out of work for 4 years now due to my mental health and I need to start bringing some kind of money in. I'm just worried about not being able to keep up with demand. Or....what if there's no demand??

    So I’m thinking of starting a store on one of these online websites. I’m wondering if you can sell more than just homemade crafts. One of my stores on Shopify has computer stickers. Is that okay to sell on Etsy or is it primarily crafts?

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад

      Etsy says that items have to be handmade, vintage, or a craft supply for you to sell it there, but they go on to elaborate that "handmade" includes items that are designed by you and made by a production partner (like a printer, metalsmith, etc). If you designed stickers and someone else made them, you can still sell those as long as you disclose your production partner. They mostly just want you to be honest. It makes sense since there are lots of artists and illustrators on etsy who want to sell things that aren't just originals. A while back, I had to go through an application process to confirm that the production partners I used were ethical and I'm not sure if that's still the case since it's been a while since I've added a new one. Here's their help article on what you're allowed to sell on etsy: www.etsy.com/legal/sellers/#allowed

    I want to start my own Etsy shop but I’m only 14 so I don’t know much about selling online. I think selling stickers would be a good start bc they are easier to ship, but one of my concerns is do I need to provide a return address when shipping because I don’t wanna just give away my home address.

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад +1

      The way that I avoid that is by paying for a PO Box. That way, any returned packages go to a post office where I can pick them up.

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад

      +yamini momaya Depends on your strategy for marketing and forming a community around your shop! I think social media like Instagram are pretty fun to think about alongside an etsy shop, but etsy also has a feature where you can share behind the scenes photos of your process now as well. Having a RUclips channel has helped spread the word about my shop too! You don't necessarily need a blog.

    I've been wanting to start an etsy shop to sell my linoleum block prints but i don't know how I would package them so they won't crease or crumble as they ship any tips?

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  6 лет назад

      I personally haven’t shipped prints before, but I’ve purchased some from other shops and they usually come in rigid cardboard mailers, sometimes with a piece of chipboard or something inside so it won’t bend or fold.

      It's less of a commitment for people to favorite things than it is to buy them... they could be waiting to save up or just like it enough to put it aside for now. A lot of my customers favorite all year long and then buy around the holidays as gifts. I'm not giving paid consultations at the moment, but there are lots of online etsy courses geared towards self-guided critique that you could check out! I took this one and I really like it: www.merriweathercouncil.com/products/etsy-training-course-self-guided-critique
