    Such a helpful and informative video. I opened my ETSY shop a few months ago. I did a lot of research on how to reach customers using social medial. One tip I would give is have patience. Your shop may take some time to get going and that’s OK.
    BTW I watched this while packing my latest order!

    Hello Lauren!! I loved this video!! Such great points to think about. I'd love to one day be able to sell handmade items!! I have so many different ideas of products I'd like to make!! I have no idea which ones to choose!! I do know I'd love to have items made and then sell what I have. Another thing I have no idea about is my shop name and what I want my shop to stand for!! 😲 Last thing is I don't think anyone would buy anything I have ideas of making?! 😲
    Happy Selling and God Bless

    I’ve been thinking about opening up a jewelry shop for a while now and I think the hardest thing for me, at least at the moment, is branding and coming up with a name that fits with my style, but is also flexible (like you said) if I want to branch out from jewelry. It’s really hard trying to find a name that not only feels right for me, but isn’t taken or affiliated with someone else’s work.

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад

      I have a tough time naming things too. It feels like a lot of pressure! One suggestion I'd have is to keep it on the shorter side - I see a tendency of people to use their full names with something like "Creations" or "Design" at the end and it can be tough to design logos and choose usernames and such when you then have to shorten it.
      For me, it helped to name my shop based on a theme rather than naming the shop based on the type of items you make - Fairweather Friends has my last name on it but focuses on the animal characters I design and include in my products, leaving me room to make different kinds of products that feature those creatures. But that choice wasn't without faults - it's kind of long and people love to tell me that a fairweather friend is actually a bad thing as if I've never heard that before, plus it is used for other things so I have to add "shop" to the beginning or "handmade" to the end sometimes.

    Im curious if you have a video about the regulations you have to do in order to legally sell plush toys to small children. In 2010 i sold plush toys but stopped once i realized about all the legal testing thay has to be done to sell to kids.

    Question for you: I found several wholesalers of handmade goods, some from Mexico, some leather goods. Is it ok to sell on Etsy? Or do I have to create everything I sell

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад

      Etsy doesn’t allow the reselling of others’ handmade work, just vintage items and craft supplies. Here’s their help article with more about that: www.etsy.com/legal/policy/reselling/239324376512
      You’ve got lots of other options for e-commerce sites and marketplaces that you could research though!
      In general, etsy has lots of great help articles so if you ever have questions like this in the future, that’s a good place to look for answers.

    I've been looking into selling handmade wooden toys, but after doing a little research, have found the restrictions and testing required for children's products, according to the law, are just absolutely ridiculous....like having to use a third party lab to do safety tests for each and every product at about $400-$700/test!!!!! I just wondered if anyone has any experience with if this is actually necessary!

    Thank you so much for the advice. Question: I have been eyeing your owl necklace for years now and I want to buy it, but the shipping to my cointry is WAY bigger than the actual price. Does ot really cost that mich to Trinidad? Not attacking you, I just would like to know if it's something I can't afford and have ro keep admiring from afar.

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад +3

      Yeah, unfortunately anything outside of the US is pretty expensive to ship, even for the lighter and less expensive items in my shop - and the prices go up every year, which is very frustrating because I have to keep updating it to keep from losing money just to get my items out to the people who buy them. I did add a little to help me cover the cost of the packaging and trip to the post office.

    • @TwentyPaphonies
      @TwentyPaphonies 5 лет назад +2

      As about Etsy seller, I recently had to pay $17 to ship an order to Canada. The same basic envelope that normally costs $3 to ship within the US. Outside of the continental US is even more expensive since it has to cross an ocean.

    Does your shop have to have like a theme or can you just have a bunch of different types of things in there?

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  4 года назад

      People approach this in lots of different ways. For my shop, the animal characters I design kind of unite the products which gives me versatility to release other kinds of handmade products if I want to. Some folks just sell jewelry or another type of product and stick to it. Some folks open multiple stores because they want to keep them separate. It’s all up to you and how you want your brand to be (as long as you follow Etsy’s terms).

    I have a question!!! Do I have to join a class that teaches me all these incredible skills - woodworking, using metals, sowing... my question is, how do all these successful Etsy sellers get their start and gain the skillset needed to sell things?

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад +1

      If there were just one class I could take to learn all of those things, I would totally take it! As far as I can tell, it's just a lot of hard work and practice. Plenty of skills benefit from professional instruction, but there are resources online like RUclips videos that can teach you how to make all kinds of things. The most important thing is that you get plenty of experience with whatever your chosen trade is.

    • @neebz2499
      @neebz2499 5 лет назад

      @@LaurenFairwx ok thank you! and lol, I didn't mean all of those trades in one class :) I meant to ask if most Etsy sellers first go to some sort of professional instruction class, and then personalize it from there...

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад +1

      I haven't personally taken a plush-making class, but I did a lot of research on my own from a wide variety of different books, tutorial videos, and blog posts. I think you'd have to ask other Etsy sellers to get a better idea of what most of us do!

    • @LaurenFairwx
      @LaurenFairwx  5 лет назад +19

      That definitely was a reason why I included my advice for folks to consider how much they'd have to charge to cover their costs as well as their ideal customer and what they might be able to afford. Sadly, if I were to charge less, I wouldn't be able to afford to keep making my products. I'd actually lose money.
