Sooooooo.... is this a human occupant/passenger in a drone piloted by someone on the ground OR is this a full scale multi rotor craft piloted by the pilot INSIDE the craft?
This is absolutely beautiful. Maybe you could consider actual pilots for testing. I'd volunteer for a few weeks this summer.
Just a quick word of caution here. If a few hundred thousand kids buy this game and nobody ever gets to fly it, that'll be devastating for the business. If someone does end up earning a seat, you'll be paying insurance and lawyers more than the company is worth before you even know the name of the lucky pilot.

Until low level protection is invented none of these devices will receive certification. That is why the manned flight at the end is so low and careful. You see this again and again, actual manned flights are flown very low or over water so that in the event of a problem the pilot will survive.
All the prototypes I have been watching these past few years only fly ten feet off the ground. I would love to take it ten thousand.

He’s worried about breaking the manned drone if he crashes. I’m not a drone expert but I think something that is basically a formula 1 car will be slightly harder to break than the a person piloting it

As a name of this kind of machines "manned drones" I'd go with just ev-copter from electric vehicles or ez- copter as easy to fly. Multi- copter suggest that many people can fly, so rather no until it's gonna happen. We can also go back in the 50' the first one and only VTOL Bensen B-10 "Propcopter" .
It's not a manned aerobatic multirotor until you have someone man it while doing aerobatics...

@@freezatron You sure it's not click bait though? They are calling it a historic moment but all that happened was a guy flew in a multirotor, it's been done before. Aerobatics with a person in it would be a whole other level! I would have felt less cheated if they called it 'the worlds largest aerobatic multirotor'.
Ok but I think you need to put yourself in their shoes for a moment, if that was a project I had been working on I would feel pretty elated too & might be forgiven for some hyperbole :) Bear in mind it's the first multi rotor capable of carrying a man to do aerobatics, it's their first video demonstrating their first test flights and you can see the exciting potential for this beast that lays ahead and represents a remarkable step forward in man carrying multi rotors.
Of all the ones I've seen thus far it is easily the coolest machine by some margin. Also as a test pilot you would have to be very foolish to jump straight in to it and start doing back flips when your life is on the line, typically most test programs require about 500 hours of flying before you can start pushing the limits in a new aircraft, especially if you intend to sell them :)
I say be patient and positive for them, it's only going to get better :)
I doubt they've even had 1 whole hour of flying it yet, it's going to take them a while to build up confidence in their machine to the point where they will climb in and starting flying it like they stole it !! :D
The alternative of course is to put a team together and have a go at designing, building and flying your own, which I would encourage you to do, not only would it give you a greater insight to the challenges of such a project but it could be really rewarding :)
If you happen to live near me I'd be happy to join your team as I know how to build things, aircraft included plus I am a reasonably good pilot, helicopters, fixed wing and aerobatics both full size and RC, I a;so taught myself to fly paragliders too :)

Was trying to listen for the specs. Did they say anything? Motors? Power supply? Flight computer? I think they mentioned the battery but i couldn't make it out.
@Rogue Mentality... don't be so negative, every designer relies on the knowledge of those that came before them, this is how development works, this is how ideas evolve and become more refined in order to become a commercially viable product. Hats off to them I say :)

24 batteries with what looks like XT90 plugs. Maybe higher, i don't know if there are bigger XT's.
Looked like 7S batteries, paired up in series so they'd be 14S. And they're just strapped inside a bucket stowed in the back. Yeah, it's a hobby build alright. XD
I still don't know what computer they're using as a flight controller tho.

@@veganautfpv1237 Probably that. XT90's are kinda high for our hobby builds, but something like this is well beyond that. Jeez, all those batteries and it only has the flight time of a racer. The amount of power going through those connections...
Rather than plugs, I was half expecting these things to have the batteries bolted together =P

Not all drone is a multi-rotor machine. A drone is a umanned autonomous ariel craft. No human control. It could be like a plane, helicopter, anything even on land and sea.

"groundbreaking" in this context could have a double meaning, As when it falls out of the sky due to an ESC or Battery blow out it would Break the Ground on impact! I would hope that if an one prop failed, the software can compensate to level and land the craft. As for racing in competition...well that would be scary...i can see many collisions.

Are you going to fly over the English channel? Maybe it would be better to install an emergency parachute/s that lands the whole drone safety if there is problem that cause the drone to fail to stay in the air. I guess it would a great 007 vehicle if there was a stealth version with weapons and electronics/gps/machine gun/missile guidance systems, and stealth shrouds around the main rotors, and maybe even tilting rotors!!!!!

Vanover has nothing on MCK, and he knows it.
It may be manned but he's not the pilot. The pilot is on the ground controlling the quad with a Radio Control Transmitter or controller. They are getting closer to giving control to the person in the cockpit though I think, or maybe not.

I think the way they call it "drone" is more honorary if you will its like a drone not it is a drone, easier for someone to understand what is is by calling it "manned drone" than by calling it "manned multi-rotorwing ultralight aircraft" like the fact the Porsche Taycan's top spec is called Turbo S even though the cars electric, more correlation rather than direct truth.

A "manned drond" is a contradiction in terms. It's like saying a _"married bachelor"._ A vehicle cannot be a drone if it is manned. It can be a *"man sized drone"* but there is nothing new about that.

This thing is legal for anyone to fly in the US under FAR 103. Take it over 500 feet with a reserve and see if it can really do what you are boasting. Until then, it's just a big drone.

The final goal is probably to get pilots IN the drone to pilot if from the inside. Consider that this is just the start. Like all other pioneering projects, this will take time.

Awesome, truly awesome! One thing that wonders me is the boom loading, what kind of structural analysis have you done for the motor booms and their loading? And what kind of safety margin do they have on full G loading. What is the max +-G loading of the aircraft?

Very excellent. But what I can't understand is why didn't they get to this stage way quicker after the first one (a decade ago). Surely multicopter technology was advanced enough back then. I suppose scaling it up must have BIG problems (that's all I can say). It must be way more difficult then we think. The weight and the heavy forces must make it so much more difficult, even just to get one to hover, even.
And they said gaming was a waste if time.
