- One of the first things I tried when I got my hands onto Super Mario Maker 2, was it to upload a truly impossible level. A Super Mario Maker 2 stage that simply can’t be beaten, no matter what we try! As it turns out, uploading a truly impossible level in Super Mario Maker 2 is surprisingly difficult. In this video we are going to take a look back at my journey to try to upload a truly impossible Super Mario Maker 2 level, and we will finally find out whether it is possible, to upload a truly impossible Super Mario Maker 2 stage!

Nintendo sadly deleted the impossible level by now. If someone is skeptical and wants to check whether the stage is truly impossible, here is the exact layout. If someone finds a way to upload this exact stage in 1.1 or higher please let me know about it!

@@joeykoch5664 They could just check the version state of the map and forbit uploading versions that are not cleared on up to date version. Pretty simple: just a variable in a map file.

My auto level is now impossible after v1.2 (but probably can be cheesed). Nintendo allowed it to be re-uploaded without a new clear: W2H-2XF-CKF

5:30 few things
1. If you factory reset, all you have to do is make sure your game that don't support cloud save are on an SD card
2. You'd only need 1 extra switch as you can just factory reset that one
THANK YOU I was thinking this exact thing!! Why wouldn't you just buy one extra switch and continually reset that??? Then you have a backup for if something like this happens again, too!

We've seen so many examples by now of cases where people who work on games clearly are watching RUclips videos about them (and sometimes even admit to it), so I think it's almost certain.

I have another idea for a sort of impossible level - there have been techniques discovered to basically do TAS on MM2. It’s a little hard because there aren’t emulator tools available and there isn’t much information about the TAS techniques, but they could be used to make a level with things that are basically impossible for humans, like really precise mashing (like the MM1 level “mario kart P end tunnel ultimate,” which required a controller with a turbo button to beat), precise tricks (things like pixel perfect spike jumps or NSMBU pow walljump regrabs), or rng manipulation (since MM2 rng is determined by player movements). The TAS techniques interested me because giving MM2 inputs from a computer has so many different possibilities, like twitch chat or an AI playing levels or a computer program designing “little timmy” levels
They’re still not impossible then, just really hard

I absolutely love Ceave's script writing and delivery. He needs to make some sort of career out of it if he hasn't. He's incredible, he keeps me watching this content about a game that I don't even own (I do also enjoy the engineering/problem solving of these challenges though).

Honestly, one of the simplest ways to stop someone from doing this is to just force you to clear a stage as you upload it.
Then, they need to just make sure all physics stick on their original versions.

I think the reason the fireball height glitch was patched globally is because it is a change to the character as opposed to the level, so it a change to the characters playing the level instead of the level itself

Icay I think a better de-cheese is replace the piranha plant with a muncher on a one way. Also, I found out that in multiplayer, progressive power-ups are always in its “big” phase, so it could easily be a mushroom needing to hit a note block with a muncher that hits a bob-omb that activates a on/off block so you could go in a door. Simple... well, not for everyone playing it....

There is actually ONE more thing that got patched globally. In 1.0, the Super Ball powerup could only trigger a P-switch if it hit the top of the switch. Sometime later, Nintendo changed it so it could be activated from the side as well.
This means you can create a setup where you have to throw a Super Ball in between 2 towers of P-switches to kill an enemy and get a key to the next area. If you trigger the P-switch, the floor drops out and Mario dies. Once you update the game, it will be 100% impossible to get the key without triggering one of the P-switches.
I took 2 seconds to look at the final design and realized you can just position yourself so the fireball still hits the bob omb instead of being limited to a small area

Oh it's not just Splatoon. All the Pokemon games, as well as some third party titles like Dark Souls IIRC don't support cloud saves, due to the cloud saves being able to easily cheese mechanics like cloning Pokemon, ect
Still can't believe that's their best solution to such issues. We are already paying the yearly ransom of $20 for multiplayer games with atrocious connection, it wouldn't have been much harm to protect our saves in them.
I'm curious, how would you manage to get around this issue? I personally can't think of another method that would allow saves to be backed up without breaking certain features
blairjparker if people want to go through all the effort just to cheese Splatoon 2 then let them. Or just ban them if you can detect it.

I'm pretty sure you would have had to _clear check_ the stage on an earlier version, then upload it on the later version.

It is possible in multiplayer mode. I made it in it. As proof I wrote a comment at the first checkpoint after the pipe and at the end of the level.

By just changing a few tiny, inconsequential pixels, Ceave was able to exploit a stage-breaking mechanic that made for an impossible level. Incredible

Why didn't he just get a friend's switch that hasn't ever ran mario maker

Because he would need to reset that switch (or another friend without Mario Maker
in multiplayer, almost all speed runs are changed into impossible levels for many reasons:
1. the timer keeps going while one player is in a pipe or door.
2. the stage will not reset when a player enters a door or pipe if another player is in that area.
3. If a block affected by gravity (like a sideways spring or POW block) is placed just above a pipe, it will fall and block the pipe due to the game having to constantly run when displayed on anyone's screen, even while coming out of a pipe, therefore sending you back.
