the fact that she brought a pen and notepad to the filming just shows she is serious about taking advice... i haven't seen anyone else take notes during the appointment.
I get stressed by note taking. I'm trying to listen to the current words while so trying to write down what was just said, and I miss a chunk in the middle. My brain doesn't function that way. I would like to focus on what he's saying and ask questions and then go back and watch the video and take notes.
I definitely have to comment that the choice to turn off internet at night is very smart for her teenage daughter. During her development, she won’t get into horrible habits nor rely on the internet to fall asleep. I’m 26 and I had strict parents but I’m glad she is doing that. I remember I used to fall asleep reading books (before social media was a huge thing anyways and well before TikTok). And now my teen brothers are on TikTok all night
I think some people may be misunderstanding my hesitation to her purchasing a house. Obviously, I would love for her to get a house, but it is beyond risky to get into a mortgage without a fully funded six-month emergency fund first! I just want her and her family to be safe and stay there for as long as they want.
I think you overestimate how risky home ownership is and underestimate its value. Owning a home means not having to worry about the unexpected expenses associated with being evicted, and with having your rent increased on you. You want to have an emergency fund whether you own or rent, because both come with risks. In my case, I bought a home with no emergency fund. Obviously you can never predict the market, but had I not bought when I did, I would have never been able to save more, because rent would have been higher than the mortgage and maintenance for the same size of unit, and because rents have gone up so much since then that I never would have been able to afford to get into the market otherwise.
She should have made it clear right from the start that she bought a mobile home which is parked on her parent's property to be near them as they look after the kids at night while she works. She made it sound like she bought a house nearby them.
In my first month of home ownership my boiler broke during the coldest snap of winter and I needed a new one. There was a pest problem and a leak from the bathroom. You definitely need money set aside for these sorts of things happening, or you’ll get yourself into trouble. That being said, if I didn’t buy when I did, I would have missed the
@@TheChewyleaf I bought a condo, so I pay monthly maintenance fees. Most of the big issues are covered by the building’s contingency fund. Worst case scenario you get hit with an assessment, but there are lower interest loans available for those. Major issues are covered through insurance and minor issues are not extremely expensive, and I do most of the repair work myself to save money.
The relief in her eyes when she realized it would only be a 14 month correction was heartwarming I'm sure she will stick to it. I made the same mistake, I bought my house without an emergency fund and the $15K heat/AC broke during near death valley temps😭. Lesson learned for sure I will never do that again. Not having an emergency fund is an 🚨 EMERGENCY 🚨
@fatimamanneh9432 do you know how many credit cards work? Im not trying to be rude, im asking. You get one with 0 interest the first year, make your big purchase (this is what I did at the beginning of covid, I was kicked out of my house and needed a place to rent and furniture to sleep on). Then, with the job you have, you make steady payments on that card. I didnt know this until a few years ago when my fiance taught me how to build credit. I as well as many other Americans are taught that credit cards are bad, don't use what you don't have, and they, in turn, have bad or no credit. Was finally able to get my credit score to 790 from credit cards being paid off on time. When the commenter said get a credit card with high limits, im sure he wasn't thinking "and don't pay it back" or "rack up interest". Or maybe he was. There's a way of getting a credit card with high limits for this type of emergency and still paying it off on time, within that year, and not collecting any interest or debt.
I really like her and am routing for her. We brush by the fact that she is working TWO FULL TIME JOBS and supporting her kids to talk about the excuses but thats amazing. She seems like a really hard worker and I wish her the very best ❤
@@Kittie28the amount of people that have terrible grammar in these comments really makes me wonder what they’re teaching in schools these days. We know it’s not financial literacy and it’s definitely not spelling either 😂
What sucks is there isn’t a way for her to be as present as she should be as the sole parent, while working nearly 15 hours a day Edit: she works 6 days a week so 13 hours
@@JeronimoStilton14 Yep - we have to choose between financial stability and being present in our kids' lives. Somehow this poor lady is not attaining either...
I have empathy for this lady. She is a single mother, her ex husband has terminal disease. She probably can’t count on him for any emotional, physical or financial support. She has two kids, a super hectic and stressful job. With all these physical and emotional toll, it’s easy to see why she’s ignoring her finances. I hope Caleb can help her, and that she will take these advice to heart and make better changes for her family and herself.
@@botgameplay236 It is his shtick. I honestly dislike some of the behavior as it lacks empathy. I understand if its young people just making dumb decision but this lady is in a tough spot.
Yeah right... this lady has a ton of support!!🤦♂️ The dying Ex is forced to pay child support even though she has a great income. Her family (parents, aunt, etc) are all there for her and the kids. She owns a home, and is able to stockpile a ton of cash. She needs to take accountability. She let the guy cum inside of her and create the kids. She let herself build all this debt, she decided she doesn't want an emergency fund. No excuses if she's gonna come and complain about "needing a place to live"
Sooo refreshing. Mature adults that actually take these sessions seriously. Asking clarification questions. Taking notes. And not just talking about what they want to do with their tik tok career. She has all the tools to crush this and really take control of her life. I’m rooting for her and I know lots of people here are. ✊🏻
My favorite guest yet! She has legitimately taken steps to pay off cards, not add new charges, and stopped going to Starbucks. Can’t wait to see her follow up episode!
She works 6 12 hour shifts a week! Truly amazing work ethic and I hope she gets out of debt. This situation is rough but I hope she can cut back hours soon ❤
Right? Can you imagine if she had to pay for childcare? I hope she can get to working a more typical number of hours and maybe get more nursing ed so she can be an RN instead of an LVN. I was wondering how she was making that much as an LVN when she first said that
I cannot fathom how someone can make so much money, barely have any “fun” spending, and still struggle. I blame dumb spending for most of people on the show, but this lady is genuine.
She didn't plan for an emergency, plain and simple. If she had the emergency fund *before* the emergency, she wouldn't have gone into debt for it. That's the point of an... say it with me... emergency fund...
Inflation, home and rent prices being way out of reach for average income earners and its getting worse. She is lucky to have a nice job, if she didnt and her husband fell ill.. She wouldnt be able to afford rent with her two kids
I love this lady! She is a hard worker, supporting her herself and her family. She seems like a good parent (and I fully agree that she should be monitoring her kids online!). She is making positive changes to improve her financial health by paying off her cards, driving older cars, limiting her spending and seeking out financial education and assistance via Caleb and probably elsewhere. I wish her success, big pat on the back. I hope she doesn’t forget to take care of herself too!
I love how this lady didn't comprehend the fact of Caleb saying you could have rented instead of buying a house and her excuse is " we needed somewhere to live " 😂😂😂 YES!!!! but you could have RENTED 🤦
I'll never get that mentality. I rented for FOUR YEARS while I paid off all my debt in 34 months. It's stable, secure and if something breaks, the property management handles it so it's not an extra expense incurred for me. There's nothing wrong with renting, people!
Yeah I feel, she doesn't understand one statement doesn't completely justify the other. Also (I'm not saying it's her daughter's responsibility) but she has a 15 year old child, old enough to babysit for the few hours between her leaving for work and the 4 year old going to bed.
If you have time between audits, I think a good idea for a video would be 5 tips for people in average situations to boost their personal finances without taking drastic actions!
1) know how much cash flows in and how much goes out by reviewing your financials frequently. 2) BUDGET. set x aside for food, savings, expenses, etc 3) Learn how credit cards and interest work. Paying more than the minimum, doing cost benefit analysis for balance transfer, etc. 4) Learn how to save, no matter how little 5) revisit the above 4 frequently to always be on track
So many people fall into the trap of “if PITI < renting, then buying is better!”. Forgetting that there’s a lot more cost to home buying than just the mortgage, taxes and insurance
This audit was incredibly refreshing and relatable since the guest had an established well paying career. Audit aptly demonstrated how people can easily lose themselves in the grind. The early mornings and late nights. Grappling with inflationary pressure on prices on essentials, gas, groceries and housing. Trying to parent and splurging to compensate for lack of time. Exhaustion is all consuming, no time for reflection on how to best leverage your hard earned income. Hope to see more similarly situated guests
My father passed away from ALS and the nurses that help families who deal with this are literal heroes! Daphne, I know how hard your career is, please know every single person who’s been a witness to this terrible illness knows how amazing people who do your work are!
My point was that if you're taking a huge loan out for a house. You should know what loan term you're taking out and also know what interest rate is doable! 8.5% for home is insane!@bat3891
@bat3891 she chose to live in the same property. Caleb brings up renting and having the parents move in. It's not like they couldn't make something work. They just saw one solution then spent the time justifying it post hoc
Caleb, your videos have helped me so much brother. Unfortunately lost my friend to suicide 2 years ago and fell into a spiral. Drained my savings, retirement and racked up about 16k in credit card debt. Between your videos and therapy, I’ve managed to dig myself out of that hole financially and mentally. Tomorrow I fully pay of my credit card debt and have never been more excited about the future. Much love 💜 Thank you to each and every one of you who liked and commented. This community is fantastic 💜
I do think Caleb needs to explain Christmas savings to some of these families. I feel that so many don’t budget for Christmas. They pay towards credit cards and then Christmas hits.
100% this... its like Christmas is every year at the same time... so many parents act like it was a surprise that came out of nowhere. Same for kids birthdays 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
He has in past episodes, "you Christmas gift to other is getting yourself out of debt", is essential the message every time someone bring it up, when you debt free then you have your fun money to save for gift buying
I have a rewards credit card, I pay the card off every month and use some of that reward money for Christmas. So my credit card has paid for the past 5 Christmas. This is the first Christmas as a mom, but they will be less than 5 months old. We shall see what happens. Did tell my sisters if they wanted to stick a bow on a box of diapers. I'd be cool with that.
That whole property discussion was honestly one of the most painful conversations I’ve listened to. Caleb was not asking a difficult question. If she wasn’t giving excuses, she was dancing around the question (I honestly don’t know if she just didn’t understand it at all). I entirely understand Caleb’s frustration because I was getting frustrated too lol
my parents built their house on my grandparents land (they had two lots) because my grandparents were very persistent about it. so i can understand why she felt that was the only option, if her parents were pushing her to do so.
How does she still owe $187,000 on a trailer she doesn't even own the land it is parked on? The very nicest most expensive double wide trailers cost $130k new. She could have bought a nice single-wide 3 bedroom trailer for $50k.
Right, none of that made sense. Most of the cost of a house is the land under it. If you built your house on your parents’ land, it should be cheaper than renting.
I LOVE seeing follow up videos in general, but would really love to see a follow up episode with this woman in particular. It is so fun to see when people actually put these suggestions into action and are able to financially recover from these tough situations. This woman seems sincere and hard working, and I want to see how she progresses!
I used to teach nurses and medics. A lot young nurses go from earning 10-12 dollars an hour to 20-40 an hour. They go into expensive shopping spree on the first 2 years of their career. They fall into traps of debt and trying to keep up with their fellow nurses lifestyle. When you a person that invest and saves they look at you like a piece of crap. Same thing happens with new doctors, techs, and similar careers.
I actually just watched a video recently on RUclips from a RN who has been nursing for 15+ years who talked about what she's witnessed over the years with fellow nurses making unwise financial decisions (i.e., buying luxury bags, getting nicer cars, etc.) once they start making a little money. It's honestly wild how lifestyle creep can trap you in debt.
Most nurses are broke if you search why are nurses broke you will see the lifestyle inflation creep plus they get with dusty men that’s why nurses working into they 60’s and 70’s but can’t stop because of the income
My mom passed about a year ago due to ALS, thank you so very much to this woman and all those that take care of people like my mom. They truly dont get paid enough.
Sorry for your loss❤. My dad passed from this in 2019 and just hearing anyone mention ALS still gets me teary eyed thinking bout what comes with this disease.
The parental controls she has on her daughter’s phone and Internet usage are completely appropriate. More Americans should be this involved in shaping their kids’ online usage. In our family, my kids have access to their devices overnight during senior year as a preparation for college. Stick to your area of expertise Caleb 😅. She sounds like a very good mom.
Her living on her parents property makes 100% sense, her kids can sleep in their own bed and be within arms each of her parents. Also, parental control is absolutely a necessity, she's a good mom.
The issue with the property: what if the parents fall into debt and need to sell the land? The chance might be low, but it's never zero. She does not own the land her house is standing on, which is problematic.
My only gripe is that she should have bought out a portion of the parents land. If anything happens with her parent’s finances or just in general, she could be in massive trouble. Tbh Caleb’s response to the own/rent really frustrated me, she’s a single mum working night shift. She needs the stability of not know they’ll be evicted or being denied to renew the lease after 12mths. Her kids deserve to sleep in their own bed 6 nights a week, it’s not fair to expect the kids to be dropped off after dinner and picked up then driven straight to school. Also staying at the grandparents 6 nights a week could impact her child support and custody.
Im about halfway through at this point, and looking through the comments no one seems to have mentioned that her house is probably a mobile home. The circumstances seem to all point there (20 year instead of 30, placing the home on her parents land and them not making her pay land rent, living in a camper before the "home" purchase). This all stinks of mobile home to me. Which can be fine, but in 10 years shes going to be underwater on the remaining balance of her loan; with no equity in the land or even really on the house. If it is a mobile home she 100% would have been financially better off renting a house in the area.
@bat3891you've commented this multiple times. I don't think you have any understanding of the fact its not a traditional home. It does not hold that much value.
I get that she was working overnights (7pm-7am or thereabouts) so dropping off and picking up school-aged kids while keeping them on a regular schedule was gonna e tricky, but the fact is she was not financially ready to buy a house, and even less financially ready to buy a depreciating asset.
As someone who was pretty sheltered and had strict parents, I can say that once kids get out on their own it’s hell in a speed boat. I went 3,000 miles away from home for college and lost my scholarship and flunked out 3 years later because I had no idea how to make good choices because my parents never let me be independent. I beg all parents to gradually allow teens to have some sort of freedom/independence before leaving the house.
Thank you!! And the “I trust you not them” thing really messes with a kids head, as they’re doing bad things going “well my parents said I’m the good one so I’m not doing anything wrong”. There are so many ways this can go south and counting on the .0001% of the kids that don’t do anything and “stay good kids”, it’s foolish
Not being on the internet from 10pm to 6am seems fine if they're young, but once they're in high school, I'd let that go. Sometimes you have to pull all-nighters researching or text a close friend, etc.
My parents accomplished this by having very close boundaries. "Our family does XYZ". Brainwashing can be effective and beneficial. Worked well for me and my siblings.
72 hours per week is not feasible long term, especially for a physically based career. if she gets hurt and cant work, her whole plan falls apart. Shes barely getting by from working more than the average worker. You cant out-earn your own stupidity.
That’s what I was thinking. Caleb did not really pick up on the fact that she has 2 full time jobs. If she only works 40 hours, she can’t afford that house
Agreed. 6 days a week and 100 mile commute? That's way too much. Plus if she loses a patient her income cuts in half. She definitely needs a 1 year emergency fund.
Can honestly say since starting to watch this channel, I am making much more progress on my debt. Cutting out a lot of taquitos! Killed a couple of debts and now going for the big ones. Thanks Caleb and all the guests that come on.
Love her smile of relief at 49:50 . I had tons of debt for years and it weighed on me sooo much. When I finally sat down (in my early 30s) and really acknowledged where i was at it felt so defeating/embarrassing/impossible to deal with. My debt was a combo of student loans, medical debt from a medical emergency, and then stupid spending on top of it. It felt good making a budget like this and being able to actually see to the month when it would all be over. I turned 40 last year debt free. So, I was really able to feel that smile at 49:50. Best of luck Daphne! You got this!
Rough start of the convo, but she seems to have a good heart and good intentions!!! She's got this!!! Sometimes when problems stack up it's easier to just avoid the pile of issues, but that means you'll mindlessly assume you have to spend the rest of your life dragging it around with you. Facing it, and dealing with the pile is hard but it also clears things up. You can see the weight lifted off her when she heard the '14 months' timeline. She's got this!!!
She definitely could have rented but logistically, i think her choice made the most sense. My aunt (who is a nurse) has the same situation + one child with a disability and there is absolutely no way she could function without my grandma living 2 houses down from her
Especially her working double shifts! And it depends on what her parents had. It sounded like they have a manufactured home.. which you can't just move around.
100% agree!! I worked two jobs at an average of 70 hours a week for 6 years. I did it to chunk away at debt and then the plan was to build emergency fund. I'm 52 and I just couldn't do it anymore. Call me weak if you want, but it was just too much, I had to stop.
Well yes, that takes care of itself. But shes still in her 30s so she can probably handle a few years more of that. You do have to listen to your body, I wouldnt do it past 40, the risks outweigh the benefits
I work a lot of overtime, and yeah, it catches up to you with age. You’ll pay for it in health long term. It’s also like…hmm. I know she’s in a bad situation with the ex’s health and the debt, but at 80 hrs a week, who is actually raising those kids? Especially with the little one, that’s so much time she’s not in their life in the formative moments.
A parent managing a minor child’s social media and internet access is a welcome rarity. Each child has a different need here but I love to hear parents being intentional about it.
I like it too. As tough as the house situation is, I can not imagine leaving my 15 and 4 yo in a camper by themselves every night. She seems like a good woman and I hope she can reach financial success.
Absolutely! Our now 16 year old got himself in trouble at 15 as we were too lax. Although snapchat & tiktok are a no go, he downloaded it onto the school ipad he had access to and snapchat was pushing a social “friend” finder app called Wizz he downloaded… when we saw it, it is like Tinder for 12 year olds ☠️ he found random girls all over the US and face timed with them all night. We now have a 9 PM cut off and device turn in time for all of our 4 kids on top of screen time restrictions. Its a struggle to stay on top of them with all that stuff, but we’re trying
Both can be hit and miss. Much like any other influence therea a line between education and control. And at 15... you're starting to get to the edges of Some of that. As for leaving them solo... I mean... my brother and I were 13 and 9 home by ourselves for a couple days at a time. I cooked, did my homework, babysat, laundry if needed. But at 4 that's pretty tough yeah
I was a little brat in high school but my parents tracked my phone and when I got a job I just bought a prepaid phone that I would use when I was grounded😂 kids always find a way. I COMPLETELY understand her concern though because I put myself in some pretty dumb and dangerous situations.
My wife's an MSN and manages a telemetry unit, my son is a practicing BSN, and my HS senior daughter is preparing for RN school. I'm very familiar with this industry. If this lady would take an LPN to RN class and work incentive pay shifts in a hospital, she could likely hit 100k in a 40/50 hr work week no prob in most of the US. The difference in pay between an LPN and a bachelor's prepared RN is staggering.
Those were my thoughts too. I am going to do my LPN first just because any pay raise at this point is going to help my family, but for those not raising kids and needing a huge income I would just go for your RN.
What areas and hospitals are yall getting 100k in? My wife has been a full-time an RN for two of the largest hospital networks in Houston and doesn't make near 100k.
I would love to start to see segments of people that aren’t in any financial ruin, but people that don’t understand finances and you explain everything to them. Stuff school should show you but doesn’t!
Evar since finding this channel, I can't not imagine his reaction every time I'm making a stupid decision of any kind. Keep up the great work! I really enjoy your channel!
Not to sound mean, but I think we should clarify that an LVN is not a Registerded Nurse. I respect the hustle, but the income threw me off, cos an RN would definitely make more than 85k if they were working 2 jobs.
If I’m understanding her correctly, she purchased a manufactured home and put it on her parents property. Those things go down in value. So maybe she paid 100,000 for one, but in a few years, it’s not gonna be worth it. Sure, she can move it wherever, but unless she owns land, she’s not gonna gain any equity at all. She might as well have just rented in that case.
This is so sad but you're totally right. When people compare owning to renting and say owning is "paying yourself," it's because when you sell the house you take all your equity with you. When she leaves this place, all she's going to get is whatever she can scrap it for. 😢
Sadly those mobile homes have to go through like a personal loan line they don't count as normal mortgages. Those are bad they depreciate so fast and never hold value.
I’m surprised Caleb didn’t catch on to this. He would have raked her over the coals yet again if he had. But maybe she built a house instead… but still, he was right that she shouldn’t have done it.
Yeah that is my understanding too. I would almost rather she had bought an rv or a camper and kept that on their property. At least then it would be easier to move and sell if you wanted to. And you could buy one a couple years old to save on the depreciation.
As soon as Caleb asked about the purification system, I was like "You definitely need one of those out in rural Texas." Some of my family lives out there and the water is unusable for drinking or showering without the water purification system.
100% agree. Also, when she gets ahead a peroxide system would take care of the iron she mentioned ("I can't drink it"). Seems crazy for the amount she is paying that wasn't included.
Putting a house on property you don't own is so risky. Why didn't they deed her a small portion? If something happens to the parents and it is not specifically spelled out on what she is entitled to she could get stuck with a mortgage on a house that she cant access.
Y’all in similar situations: open a living trust (or similar) and make your child the beneficiary. If the upfront costs of doing that are too much, deed the property to all three of you with varying percentages of interest. This can cost very little with some research. Subdividing the property can cost a lot and has tax/zoning/value implications.
Dave Ramsey teaches people not only to save and budget, but also what sinking funds are and the importance of planning ahead. This is so important for parents, homeowners, pet owners, any one that owns a car...sinking funds are so needed.
Caleb- PLEASEEE stress having a strong emergency fund for all guests(like 3-6 months) before attacking debts or making a big purchase like a car or house. I did the whole “we will be okay with this small amount” and my husband lost his job very unexpectedly. Now we are in a worse situation than before across the board. NOT HAVING AN EMERGENCY FUND IS AN EMERGENCY!! Please listen, anyone who reads this. I’ve spent the past few weeks just crying, worrying, and trying to hustle out of this alive. I promise you all don’t want to go through this.
30:17 Caleb, check out Jonathan Haidt's research and data of pre-teen and teenagers access to internet and social media 24/7 and the steady incline of anxiety, depression, and suicide since 2006 (when the iPhone became ubiquitous), this is one of the reasons parents are so wary of the access their children have on these devices.
Yes I’m glad someone brought this up, I recently took a children in media class in college and the statistics of anxiety and depression with more social media use is so sad to see, with the majority being teens affected. I’m all for limited social media use for teens because it is not good for their mental health and research studies are online to prove it. 😕
Yeah why can we not just say it. The circles people run to make their situation seem better than it is does the opposite lmao I’m so confused. Like is this person that dumb? I doubt it
Regarding the house: 20 year loan on a depreciating asset where she doesn’t owe the land underneath. That’s honestly why it’s such a bad idea. She’s just lucky the house is on land she will inherit
As a parent, her phone plan for her daughter sounds extremely reasonable. You can't control everything but cyberbulling and online predators are very real and she is doing what she can to protect her still young daughter. 15 is young!
Absolutely, we have teens at home on their phone till 2 am ( if you let them) up to school at 6 am...the struggle is real...she HAS to have some control, it doesn't mean the the child is completly sheltered... just ensuring her safety and good sleep, that's all... Great Mom!!
Makes absolutely no sense at all, plus she said her daughter is on social media. so what exactly is she protecting her from if she's allowed to be on social media in the first place? All that will probably happen is that she will go to college and end up overcompensating for her lack of freedom by getting into drugs or something extreme lol. Anyway, iPhones have parental controls, controlled by the parent's phone and it does not cost extra. That was the main point.
You think she was peer pressured into buying a cheap manufactured home on someone else's property? Which demographic would see that as a status symbol? @@Jake38nine
I'm surprised they didn't address the two jobs / 72 hrs per week -- that seems unsustainable (after she achieves the 14-month goals). Caleb was a bit too excited about the take-home pay, but that comes at a cost with her kids. If there is some way to increase her hourly rate and dial it back to one job, that could be well worth a modest investment, maybe a specialty nursing certification.
I know. I wonder if she wants to go to school to be an RN to earn more and work more like 36 hours or less a week for the same pay. Probably a question for a different day when she's in a better position, her youngest is in free school and her eldest is supporting themselves.
@@jborrego2406 if you work 7 days a week something is not right. Either you are getting paid low wages, your not an RN or you are spending too much somewhere.
I definitely agree with what she did buying a home before renting. The townhomes in my neighborhood are renting for $2500 per month and the mortgages are around $1600 per month. $2500 is the starting rate. Who knows what the increase is now. Rent now days are most likely more than mortgages bought 1-2 years ago and people renting can’t afford a home now partly because landlords jacked rents up on them. Some of the money that is meant for a down payment is going towards increased rent. She probably has a low rate. Landlords are less forgiving than a mortgage company and will evict you very quickly. They’re getting the paperwork ready as soon as you hint about a loss of income. If they eventually gets the property, her kids can live there or a renter can. The way I see it is she made the right decision and I don’t think it’s a good idea to trade a mortgage for a landlord.
As an adult who messaged strangers on my iPod 3 as a kid, I agree! There were apps that looked like kids apps and weren’t- Even my friends in after school programs recommended “games” like Habbo for me to play. Yikes! I will say I was smart enough not to give out any personal information and still have some good friends from Xbox back then. Looking back, there were definitely a lot of predators that I blocked on messaging apps. It’s scary seeing kids playing among us and Roblox these days. My cousin and I warned our aunts about this years ago and tried to help them set up restrictions but they’re not tech savvy and never followed through with it.
Caleb, wanted to give you the heads up that most manufactured home mortgages are 20 year, pretty standard, wasn't necessarily an "option" for her, it is just what they usually do
@bat3891 to a degree i agree, the payment might be slightly cheaper per month by stretching the debt out for an extra 10 years, but for a brand new home, the manufactured home she bought will be significantly cheaper than any brick and mortar built home, and unsure about the area but typically to compete with the price of a manufactured home she would end up getting a 40 year old fixer upper house, just saying (as an example, not actually statistics)
@@Howdy762 curious - in UK standard mortgage default term has been 25 yrs for living memory. during peak market when encouraging people to stretch some lenders offered 30 yrs.
I had no idea that you should have a 6 month emergency fund before getting into a mortgage. This year my income tanked by about 40% due to circumstances out of my control and I'm working more and more stressed than ever. I wish I had found you first Caleb 😭 i am financially illiterate but I was even WORSE 2 years ago
I disagree with most people! She was stubborn with the house I think she really started catching the vision! She also was one of the first people that really started making changes after see the channel! Forget the hater! You got this!!!! I really see her having a really successful follow up! Excited to see what you do!
Yeah I don't even think the house was that bad of a decision. Like I understand why she doesn't want the kids sleeping at their grandparent's place six days a week and/or forcing them to wake up at weird hours every day. Granted they could have stayed in the RV for a little bit longer but I don't think renting would have been a good option given the specific situation.
@bat3891 what are you on about? I literally pulled up the town. She is in on my phone and she had about 30 different options. She could have rented from that was just a couple minute drive from her parents place. Easy there Lad.
Caleb - a GREAT addition to the show would be a summary of 3 learnings or things you could do to avoid getting into the guests position? Could just be a 2 min outro. I reckon it'd be good value.
11:11 this chaos about "building equity" when she bought a frigging trailer home. That's the same as saying an auto loan builds equity! Trailer homes depreciate so hard because they fall apart the longer the sit in 1 place setting on a foundation.
To be fair, sometimes Caleb struggles with understanding people explaining stuff. But some people do a terrible job at explaining, but I followed her house situation pretty well
@@michael_harren true. However, her disability to discern current times to previous and being obtuse with how to smartly handle the childcare situation was annoying
@bat3891 She did not need to buy a house, she could have purchased a more reasonable mobile home as a temporary basis if she "needed" to stay on her property. It's not that she couldn't buy the house she just wasn't in the financial position to buy it. Her down payment for the house was her "emergency fund" which was a big no no despite her situation and reasoning.
Night nurse for 7 yrs w little kids. I drove my kids to my moms every night i worked and picked up in morning. It was tough but my kids are grown and i haven't heard complaints
Hey Caleb, Love the channel! I just want to give a little bit of constructive criticism. Let the people fully explain the situation before you jump on them, I feel like it causes some confusion when they don't get the whole picture to you sometimes and things get misunderstood. Keep it up!!
The mo’ money mo’ problems episodes are the best. Really shows income is not the solution to everything. Kudos to seeing the interview all the way to the end with such a stubborn guest.
Buying a house is one of The Biggest Purchases of one's entire life. You can't just jump in without planning, running the numbers or ensuring that you can afford that mortgage plus insurance, plus property taxes, etc.. There are so many phantom costs involved in buying and maintaining a house. Because the roof is always great, the furnace/water heater never breaks down, and the foundation is always 100%, right? Best strategy (not perfect) - save a (20%) down payment, save a 6 month emergency fund just for the house (not including your personal emergency fund), calculate the purchase and maintenance costs and verify that your income can support ALL those obligations. And don't let anyone talk you into over-extending beyond your limit.
As someone whose job is on the internet, it should be pretty obvious why she wants parental controls over her 15 year old daughter’s internet access! There’s so many terrible things her daughter could fall into by accident and also pedos don’t even try to hide that they are looking for kids to talk to anymore! It’s a dangerous place for a child and her mom is a good mom for watching out for her.
EARLY!!!! I love this channel. I am debt free - but definitely spend more than I should. Ever since watching this channel, I have calmed down on the eating out and started focusing on being healthier overall. I appreciate all people who come on this show and sharing their stories.
It's so crazy to me how learning about financial mindfulness on this channel has made me more mindful of my future in other ways! I've never thought so much about taking care of my future self, but I'm glad I'm doing it now.
Either this is oddly edited or this lady cannot explain her housing situation. That it took that long for her to explain (still poorly) that her home is LITERALLY on the same piece of land as her parents' was painful.
I have fallen in love with your channel within the past week. I have become addicted to your channel and your content. You strive to allow people to be financially free and I love it. I grew up paycheck to paycheck (we even ate out of a food pantry for two years) and now I’m in a year-long schooling/internship that will make me a project manager. You’re helping me understand that just because I’m going to get/ have money doesn’t mean I need to spend it. I gotta be smart with my moneys and make good decisions. Thank you for providing that information and clarity. I have already made changes with eating out. I plan on clearing my parents debt and providing a good start for retirement for them while also keeping myself debt free. THANK YOU CALEB!
One set upgrade I’ve noticed is that Caleb used to just use the apple calculator for these videos-which I honestly have no idea how he did because I am an accountant and despise the apple calculator-but he recently upgraded to a numpad calculator. What a splurge 😂
These are the types of episodes I really appreciate and can relate to as a fairly high household income. No matter how much you are making, always make sure to keep a healthy emergency fund as all it takes is a few things to go wrong at the same time and your savings can be quickly wiped out if its not quite beefy.
For those buying stuff from clothing stores (places you get emails from) unsubscribe to all store emails and unsubscribe to any influences you watch on youtube and Instagram. It really helps curve your spending.
LPN vs RN must be a big pay difference? I’m a respiratory therapist,I know several nurses that are making well over $100,000.00 per year. I feel bad for her and hope she can get it all worked out. Could she do travel that would up her income? I drove an hour and twenty minutes to work …. And dropped my kids off 15 minutes away to my parents. I do understand the drop off for medical jobs…. She thought it would help. Caleb, don’t let the young tween girls have cell service at night. I’m a mom of four grandma to four… trust me on this one! Love your honesty Caleb it is refreshing!
As a parent, I am with mom on parental controls on the phone. Unfettered access to the internet can be dangerous, it’s not just about the lack of sleep or scrolling on social media.
I don’t think he understood at 15 predators are everywhere online and she’s right on wanting to see everything she does. Especially, that she’s a young girl.
It’s probably to late but she needs to get some sort of an agreement for her house in writing! Hopefully it’s never an issue but if there is a falling out or death then she could end up losing her house with no agreements in writing
@bat3891 That is the issue here. I seen maybe a handful of people where they are wanting to change and mean it. It's great when it happens. Anything can happen at any point, but people who want advice, should really want it first. At least Caleb keeps trying
I don’t blame you for all the misunderstandings Caleb some people are just god awful at explaining things to other people and everything out of this woman’s mouth was so absolutely cryptic and confusing.
Caleb! I watch your videos all the time and I find it both inspiring and a great public service. Many of us are never taught how to manage our money. Just want to thank you and give encouragement to keep doing these videos. Thank you!
Wishing the best for this lady. Really not the worst spending - just the typical "so much debt that monthlies eat me up" thing. She'll get it - smart, driven, and paying attention. Excited to see where she's at in a year!

the fact that she brought a pen and notepad to the filming just shows she is serious about taking advice... i haven't seen anyone else take notes during the appointment.
I get stressed by note taking. I'm trying to listen to the current words while so trying to write down what was just said, and I miss a chunk in the middle. My brain doesn't function that way. I would like to focus on what he's saying and ask questions and then go back and watch the video and take notes.

The fact that she actually made positive changes BEFORE getting on the show is so refreshing!! She's 1000% going to get out of the hole she's in!
Agreed. Her mother is actually doing her job as a parent.
@@ttm8634 I totally missed her interest rate, that's crazy of her to lock that in.
The relief in her eyes when she realized it would only be a 14 month correction was heartwarming I'm sure she will stick to it. @pookiesfriendrayray7086your answer is why most Americans are in debt
@pookiesfriendrayray7086LMAO no way you said this
@fatimamanneh9432 do you know how many credit cards work?
My ac broke too and the migo down the street didnit for 4.5k
4 years later and this AC is going strong. Always go with the Migos!

She needs to take accountability. She let the guy cum inside of her and create the kids. She let herself build all this debt, she decided she doesn't want an emergency fund. No excuses if she's gonna come and complain about "needing a place to live"
Best comment. Ever.
This is a matter of her not knowing anything about finances. Hopefully she keeps learning. She’ll get there. As long as she continues learning.
Sooo refreshing. Mature adults that actually take these sessions seriously. Asking clarification questions. Taking notes. And not just talking about what they want to do with their tik tok career.
She has two kids also and just brought a house so of course .. once she pays of credit cards she will be straight
You don’t have to be smart to be a Nurse you just have to know how to react correctly.
Inflation, home and rent prices being way out of reach for average income earners and its getting worse. She is lucky to have a nice job, if she didnt and her husband fell ill.. She wouldnt be able to afford rent with her two kids
This is not just her, it's the majority of people in America. It's already been proven by multiple studies.
I’m a mom trying to balance kids and considering aging parents and appreciate this guest with more complex life challenges & hope the best for her!
I love how this lady didn't comprehend the fact of Caleb saying you could have rented instead of buying a house and her excuse is " we needed somewhere to live " 😂😂😂 YES!!!! but you could have RENTED 🤦
😂😂😂😂
A Realtor probably got to her.
Omg this annoyed me SOOOOO bad!
If you have time between audits, I think a good idea for a video would be 5 tips for people in average situations to boost their personal finances without taking drastic actions!
1) know how much cash flows in and how much goes out by reviewing your financials frequently.
2) BUDGET. set x aside for food, savings, expenses, etc
3) Learn how credit cards and interest work. Paying more than the minimum, doing cost benefit analysis for balance transfer, etc.
4) Learn how to save, no matter how little
5) revisit the above 4 frequently to always be on track
the problem with that is to really make a change takes drastic action.
1) Stop eating out

I do think Caleb needs to explain Christmas savings to some of these families. I feel that so many don’t budget for Christmas. They pay towards credit cards and then Christmas hits.
100% this... its like Christmas is every year at the same time... so many parents act like it was a surprise that came out of nowhere. Same for kids birthdays 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
He has in past episodes, "you Christmas gift to other is getting yourself out of debt", is essential the message every time someone bring it up, when you debt free then you have your fun money to save for gift buying
I budget/save for Christmas, and I buy things throughout the year when they are on sale. Makes the holiday shopping way less stressful.
We’re treating luxuries as necessities. These are not necessities.
@@BrettonFerguson Try over 250k. Then add sales tax to that.
Right, none of that made sense. Most of the cost of a house is the land under it. If you built your house on your parents’ land, it should be cheaper than renting.

My first big purchase as a new doctor I financed a $30,000 rolex to keep up with my peers :) 😅
Minimum is $57 per hour where I live
@bat3891 yeah why was this explained so poorly lol
I actually just watched a video recently on RUclips from a RN who has been nursing for 15+ years who talked about what she's witnessed over the years with fellow nurses making unwise financial decisions (i.e., buying luxury bags, getting nicer cars, etc.) once they start making a little money. It's honestly wild how lifestyle creep can trap you in debt.
Most nurses are broke if you search why are nurses broke you will see the lifestyle inflation creep plus they get with dusty men that’s why nurses working into they 60’s and 70’s but can’t stop because of the income

Amen. My mom died of ALS in 2019. Not many people truly understand how devastating that disease is.
Caleb is obviously unaware of the dangers.
Her living on her parents property makes 100% sense, her kids can sleep in their own bed and be within arms each of her parents.
Also, parental control is absolutely a necessity, she's a good mom.
She is admirable. She had her first daughter pretty young and she has done really well to qualify and earn a high income.
I agree.
Your high as a kite. She's 36. Time to grow up.
The loan was for $185k- I think it’s a manufactured home. She still faces the same problems, but I think her depreciation will be slower.
I’m really curious about this now…
@bat3891you've commented this multiple times. I don't think you have any understanding of the fact its not a traditional home. It does not hold that much value.
@bat3891one can't drive to and from a 16 arc property to drop kids off and pick them up?

Thanks to Caleb’s videos I was able to cover a 200$ emergency with my emergency fund 🙏 i much prefer being in debt to myself than someone else!
She definitely could have rented but logistically, i think her choice made the most sense. My aunt (who is a nurse) has the same situation + one child with a disability and there is absolutely no way she could function without my grandma living 2 houses down from her
The parents live in a mobile home though.
Especially her working double shifts! And it depends on what her parents had. It sounded like they have a manufactured home.. which you can't just move around.
My mom was a nurse with a similar schedule and she would drive me to my aunts house every night
Working nearly 80 hours per week for years and years is unrealistic. She'll want to slow it down after a while.
Ditto. Caleb missed the mark there…
Agree 100%. The internet is an awful place.
I'd like to see a "Can I afford it?" segment. People who think they are financially doing ok and want to make a big purchase.
Like that call in show with the one lady (forget her name)?
@@Ebiru2387Suze Orman
I was saying that to myself too, she could just take a few semester class and make that same wage at least, working half as much
My mom is a regular RN, no BSN and makes over 100k a year. A BSN is not necessary unless you want a desk job.
I was thinking the same thing. Then work days, sell her house to another family member, and move closer to her work.
“Well elderly people tend to sometimes no longer exist” is a quote for the ages LMAO
This is 💯 correct
Seems crazy for the amount she is paying that wasn't included.
by far my favorite episode i've seen. would love to see an update on her
he only has crazy clout chasers now, no normal people
Love that you got a nurse to do the show. Much respect for everyone who does healthcare. Hope the audit helps her.
Same. Your comment is why I like this community, hoping the best for each other. Hope it helps her too.

In Uk there are old houses where the land is not owned - but the stuff is legally structured ( leasehold)
FYI it's wary not weary
@@stephanienkurtzthanks, im gonna update that
Meh. My kids have unlimited access. They don’t abuse. Not to a point that I feel I need to correct is.
I really hope she comes back! She can set a great example for her children
The conversation about the living situation is KILLING me 😂
Yeah why can we not just say it. The circles people run to make their situation seem better than it is does the opposite lmao I’m so confused. Like is this person that dumb? I doubt it
IKR. My mind is melting. How many e causes can people have?
Caleb met his match today
She did not buy a house, she BUILT a house on her parents property.
@@shawneeGoes It wasn't even trying to make her situation seem better, they just kept misunderstanding each other.
Great Mom!!
I was thinking this too. I was a 15 year old girl, in retrospect I wish my parents had monitored the internet more
Makes absolutely no sense at all, plus she said her daughter is on social media. so what exactly is she protecting her from if she's allowed to be on social media in the first place? All that will probably happen is that she will go to college and end up overcompensating for her lack of freedom by getting into drugs or something extreme lol. Anyway, iPhones have parental controls, controlled by the parent's phone and it does not cost extra. That was the main point.
She has a good spirit! I am rooting for her and her kids!! Hopefully no more excuses!!
She definitely works hard.
Her "I needed a place to live" excuse sounds a lot like the people who justify eating out by saying "well I have to eat."
You think she was peer pressured into buying a cheap manufactured home on someone else's property? Which demographic would see that as a status symbol? @@Jake38nine

Caleb, any chance you can organize your videos by budgets? For example videos of people earning $30-$40K, $40-50K, $50-60K $75K+ etc
Great suggestion
Amazing suggestion! Would’ve never thought of of this.
What about us $20k earners lol
@@sewer_8512how??
That is a great idea
@@linseylinseyshe can't afford to return to school. To return to school means more debt and less income.

@@jborrego2406 if you work 7 days a week something is not right. Either you are getting paid low wages, your not an RN or you are spending too much somewhere.
@@linseylinseyooo oops
The problem is her house is a manufacturing home and it's on her parents's property. You don't get money back on that kind of house.
Great vid!
Also, as a middle school teacher, I think the monitoring of her teenager’s device is all within reason!!
Came to the comments to see if someone else said this 😂
100% agree with you as a 7th-9th grade teacher
Absolutely, she’s being a good mama!!
everyone i know who did this, went absolutely wild in college. fun times.
Caleb, wanted to give you the heads up that most manufactured home mortgages are 20 year, pretty standard, wasn't necessarily an "option" for her, it is just what they usually do
Twenty year loans on manufactured homes are because they depreciate in value just like cars.
30 year is the long standing standard for many decades now, not 20
@@Howdy762 yes, 30 years is standard on normal homes, but 20 is standard on manufactured (mobile homes)
$7500 a month and broke is the demonstration you can sink in debt no matter your income.
It's not an income problem. It's an expense and excuses problem.
This was the best one so far, loved that she was so ready to change by the end. Rooting for her and hoping for a great update at some point!
My favorite guest. She is so wholesome and lovely.
Having a six month buffer is not just helpful before getting a mortgage. It’s just… peace.
I really liked her!! She has a great heart you can tell. I’m wishing her the best I know she can do it 😊
I disagree with most people!
But some people do a terrible job at explaining, but I followed her house situation pretty well
Agreed. I think I followed better than both of them combined 😂
@@michael_harren true. However, her disability to discern current times to previous and being obtuse with how to smartly handle the childcare situation was annoying

@bat3891omfg enough of the copy paste we all get it
@bat3891 She did not need to buy a house, she could have purchased a more reasonable mobile home as a temporary basis if she "needed" to stay on her property. It's not that she couldn't buy the house she just wasn't in the financial position to buy it. Her down payment for the house was her "emergency fund" which was a big no no despite her situation and reasoning.
I am optimistic for her, can't wait to see her back!

Either this is oddly edited or this lady cannot explain her housing situation. That it took that long for her to explain (still poorly) that her home is LITERALLY on the same piece of land as her parents' was painful.
What worse is that she isn't even the worst spoken guest he has had recently.
Yeah I don’t think she knew it was called a manufactured home. That would’ve helped
I really believe she will do well. She seems more committed than most other people on this channel
Nurses work incredibly hard. I worked as a Unit Health Secretary and have utmost respect.

I like the fact Caleb gets frustrated but does it cause with care, always wanting the message to get through and the best of them.
