      It’s so funny because technically, technically if you have extra money to cover your debt, and the money needed to cover the expenses you are putting on your card, then the cash back is a positive financial impact.
      Problem is about spending habits and the fact that the balance is staying flat or growing. Then interest crushes you.

      @@opuntina he's kinda right. Look at the price of actual luxury cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce etc. on the secondhand market and you'll see the difference. Mercedes aren't cheap, and they do make some high end cars. But they also make a lot of fairly mid-range offerings, and the value drops like a stone over the first three to five years. They're also just really common over here in Europe. Although I'm guessing they're quite a bit less common in the US, so maybe the brand still holds a bit more prestige over there.

    • @kennyhouse8662
      @kennyhouse8662 7 месяцев назад +18

      The thing he was trying to say is this was not an optional purchase. Buying some non essential good justifying through Cashback is foolish. In the world that Caleb and his wife were pushing for, he still spends 100 on gas. 100 leaves his bank account and the net impact on his credit card statement is STILL the same. That means a decision to NOT use a credit card(in the case of an inelastic purchase) is strictly behavioral. There could be merit to that framing, but from a pure math standpoint, if a purchase is going to happen no matter what, it would be better to go through the cash back version.

    • @MissMosierable
      @MissMosierable 7 месяцев назад

      But only if you then have the discipline to turn around and pay off the entire balance before the next cycle. He, and other poor choice people, spend it on the card and then also spend the bank account money, too. Then he doesn't have the money to pay off the balance. People who are intelligent and who have discipline can get cash back and not pay interest etc. People who come on this show aren't those people. He is not that person. @kennyhouse8662

      No what he’s saying is cash back is cancelled out and even out weighed by the interest the card is accumulating. Dave Ramsay would be the one using your argument. Cash back can be good if you don’t let interest accrue and Caleb knows that

      @@kennyhouse8662 this is only true if you DON’T HAVE A BALANCE ON THE CARD. If the card has a balance on it and you add to the balance that is ACCRUING INTEREST, going for the cashback is net negative. It’s literally worse than cash

      Logically speaking, it's better to use a cash back card than your bank card.
      Let's say he has $25 in his bank account and $1000 existing balance on his credit card. His two options at the station pump are to use his credit card and his bank card. If he uses his bank card, the bank account balance goes to $0 and the cc existing balance accrues on $1000 at the end of the cycle. If he uses his credit card, he still has $25 in his bank account and his cc existing balance goes to $1025. He then uses the $25 in his bank account to pay down the $1025 by the end of the cycle. Net net in those 2 accounts, he ends up with $0 bank account balance and $1000 existing balance. HOWEVER, he has made 5% cash back on his $25 purchase and accrued interest (albeit very small) on his $25 bank account balance.

    Biggest misconception about credit card interest: If you are carrying a balance, you DO NOT get the 30 day grace period on interest. Every additional purchase you make on the card that already has a balance you’ve carried past the grace period accrues interest from day one of purchase until you pay off the balance in full. Please explain this to your guests because many people do not understand this. That is why he wasn’t getting how it wasn’t beneficial to him to not spend and get the “rewards”

      Thank you! Commenting to boost this so more people can see it. Explaining interest math is a little confusing. Explaining that you are charged interest immediately on a purchase and it eats away any "cashback savings" before you get to the monthly due date makes more sense to me.

      Isn't that how your supposed to raise your credit score though? I was taught by my parents to never get credit, that you end up losing money, so I never did. I don't have any debt but I have a low credit score despite a good income. Someone told me in order to raise my credit score, I have to take out credit and pay it slowly and not all at once. It's all so confusing and sounds like a scam to me but I'm dumb so what do I know? 😞

      @@rebeccaspratling2865 I’ve paid off my balance every month since I was sixteen and I never had problems getting approved for my car (paid off years ago) or my mortgage (on track to pay off very early). In all those years I’ve paid $0 in interest fees - that money went towards building up good down payments and investments instead.
