Regarding the mandarin oranges. You can make a light or medium syrup to cover the oranges, by using about 6 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. This should help.
One of my Grandmas, used to make all us Grandkids eat orange peels dried by her pilot light on her oven,,,, she said they had all the good stuff in them,,,it was like eating leather, but we ate them! I still eat the peel,,,after I make sure they’re scrubbed up! Love your channel ❤️
I think its a great color on her, it looks good on you! I just bought a bag of mandarin oranges today they are delicious I will have to try this thanks for the video!
I’ve been canning oranges, mandarins and grapefruit by soaking the peeled fruit in pectic enzyme to help remove the pith. I then use a light syrup. We’ve been pleased with the results.
@janejdough2230 3 weeks ago (edited) Peptic Enzyme ( you can find it where wine making things are sold). Add 1 / 8 the teaspoon per quart and soak for 12 ish hours or overnight . Shake and rinse several times the pith will slough off easily. Preserve as directed.
I love that you shared this with all of us.Saving all of the peels is a great idea. I bet the chicken could use some of the vitamin C also! God bless you'll and keep growing
I'm glad you did this, I haven't canned oranges yet, but was thinking I might. I've seen people use something that dissolves the bitter membrane, but then other people say it doesn't work. It's be so much more work to remove them by hand, but may be worth it!
I have been thinking about canning oranges, still not sure. Glad you did this video though. I will have to think about my water solution. But, all in all, I so enjoy watching you guys. 🥰
I think if I do it again I will look into that emzyne. I think that little bit of pith made it slightly bitter. I would also add more honey. Thanks for watching!!!
The pith, has amazing health benefits for you. However it can turn pretty bitter when canned up. I am told to have next to none of the pith on them once they go into the jar. The only thing you could do is possibly add spices in order to counter balance them and then re can them up again. That way they are not a loss. I love to expirement as well. That is how we learn and as well as adapt and grow. No matter the age. By the way the orange top was a wonderful touch and it suited you well. Take care.
Spices might help. I'm thinking I'll use this batch in some baked goods or some other way. I'll definitely try adding some spices in the next batch. Someone else suggested using some orange juice in the liquid. I guess I'll keep experimenting. :) Thanks for the compliment....I have a feeling I'll be adding more orange to my wardrobe.
My favorite way to eat citrus peels is to candy them. It is a Christmas treat around here. You boil those peels to get rid of any bitterness. ( several water changes) Then you boil sticks/slices of peel in a syrup, they can then be rolled in granulated sugar or dried and dipped in dark chocolate. They are very old fashioned, but so yummy.
I tried canning mandarins for the first time. I got a weird one piece lid though and the entire batch ruined. So, I started over. More peeling. The second batch did much better. Thanks for the instructions.
My hubby and I tried them and agreed that they dont taste identical to store bought because of the membrane. They weren't too sweet with the light syrup. It might taste interesting using pineapple juice as the canning liquid, kind of like orange pineapple juice. Thank you for the idea to can these. They definitely look like jewels on the shelf. Have you tried making homemade potpourri from dried flowers from your garden?
@@beadwright pineapple juice could be good! I haven't gone potpourri yet, but I'll be growing a lot more flowers/herbs for tea and medicines so i should have plenty of flowers to try it. I'll have to look into that.
Maybe if you used orange juice to can them in, instead of water, they would have more flavor? Just bought a bag of mandarin oranges and am debating between canning or freezing them.
That's a great idea... I bet that would really help the flavor. It would be safe for canning because it's adding even more acid. I'm gonna try that next time.
I gave the mandaring oranges several months and tried them....still bitter. I guess if I do them again I will use the enzyme to dissolve the pith. (not sure if I'll do them again, though)
What if you added cloves, ginger and maybe cinnamon sticks before the canning process? And honey, lol. Maybe the mandarins wouldn't have that sour taste. Just an idea. Love your videos. Many blessings.
They actually have a ton of vitamins...especially lots of vitamin C. Some people eat them, but the only other way I've used them was to make orange marmalade. (Donny loves it, but I'm not thrilled with that particular jam/marmalade) For me, tea is the best way to enjoy them so far. I'm sure I'll be experimenting with all of those peels. :) Thanks for the compliment....he's been trying to get me to wear orange for a long time. :)
@@carolkantner1770 I'm just starting to get into that whole area. I've bought some herbs to experiment with, but I'm going to growing a ton of stuff this year....as well as foraging too. It's fascinating and there is SO much to learn.
I know. I am happy with the orange peels and think I can use the canned oranges in baked goods or smoothies. I might do it again and try a couple of the suggestions I've gotten in the comments. Thanks for watching!
I think you look really good in orange. Your face has a glow.
I agree! This is Don.

Thanks for letting me know that it works. I think I'll have to use the enzyme next time.
She does look good in color orange
Thanks! Since then I have gotten another orange sweater.

The pith is good for your vascular system and varicose veins.
I didn't know that...how do you preserve/use it?

I think I would try it if i can oranges again. I'd want to make sure it didn't do anything else to the orange or have health implications.

How do they taste? Did you use a syrup with more sugar/honey? Ours just aren't sweet. :(
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 i used just a light syrup. To be honest, I havent tried them yet. They just sat for their 24 hours.

Would you like hats or tshirts? 😁

I can mine in a simple syrup. I make an orange cake that is really good.

Even though we raise bees, I think I am going to use a light syrup made with sugar.
I've canned peaches with both honey and sugar and I preferred the sugar. (even though I LOVE honey)
I do like your orange shirt. And how your husband says you like nice.
Thanks! He is a sweetheart. ☺
Had a friend give us three boxes of oranges I made wine and used it in tequila sunrises 😳omg was was it dangerous lol
That sounds like a much better idea than just canning them...HAHA
I watched someone else can with orange juice 🙂
