There is a process using Peptic Enzyme that will dissolve the membranes before canning. It is like what is used in making wine. The Inquisitive Farm Wife has a good video on using it when canning Mandarins.
Pam I wish you could see this, and your other videos, through a newbies' eyes. You and your husband are gold. The most important info you've shared is SAFE CANNING, and I'm grateful for it. This is my next fruit preservation project once I complete the Christmas jam, another 4-ish gallons of apples and something blueberries. My husband is a sucker for citrus, especially oranges.
You acturally got 5 1/2 in that jar. So in this case squauty pints will do just as well as the tall pints. These are much cuter. Never thought to canning cuties. Great idea.
Our granddaughter loves mandarin oranges. Every time she comes over she makes her way to the pantry shelf and asks to have a can of oranges. She has nearly finished them off so next time she comes there will be some home canned oranges waiting for her! Papa brought some cutie oranges home today so that will be the next project. Thank you for the inspiration and first class teaching. You’re a blessing!
I can a citrus medley that my family loves. It has grapefruit, mandarins, Cara Cara oranges, blood oranges, and Pomelo in an extremely light syrup. Because most of what I use doesn’t peel easily, I use Pectinase. It really helps! I peel everything the night before canning, put it in a pot with a mixture of pectinase and water, and stick it in the refrigerator overnight. The next morning all the pith has resolved off. A good rinse later and I’m ready to start filling jars.
So glad to see this video from you!! I wanted you to know that I am making your pie crust for my pies this year! I will try these mandarins soon. I have prepped for the first time this year thanks to you and others.
I watched this video a few days ago, wow. yesterday I canned 14 pints of mandarins yesterday. They turned out beautiful. Thank you. By the time I got them cleaned I was getting a little faster at it, Ha ha.
Hello again....tuned in tonight and low and behold you were demonstrating canning mandarin oranges. I just this morning had the idea to can some myself, so will be doing so tomorrow. I too noticed the statement easy peel and said just as you did....they lied to us. Can’t tell you how much that I enjoy your videos. I too believe we must be prepared food wise as who knows what is around the corner for us. I am beginning to think that I might be part squirrel, with all this stashing of canned foods. Thanks again.
I am finally getting around to canning some mandarins! I need to get the syrup ready. I found some Halos (very easy to peel) on sale for $2.99 for a 3-pound bag. I decided to section them and had enough for 4 pints. I used a straw to push out the pith inside and it worked pretty well, but then I decided that I would rather have the sections. If they are affordable this week , I will get another bag. Thanks again for helping us put good food on our shelves.

Your canning sessions are providing much needed education for a time in our country where we need to start preparing for hard times if we haven’t started already. I am diabetic, and watch my sugar intake. Have you ever tried using Sucralose or a similar alternative when canning fruits or jams/jellies? I may try a test “pint” on some mandarins before I jump all in with using am alternative sweetener. Thank you for the gift of your time and your willingness to share your knowledge. You have been the catalyst for a new generation to jump into canning and preserving with both feet 👣!
Thank you so much. We have one video on low sugar canning, but that is all we have done. Please come back and share your successes here so others can learn what you are doing!
Thank you for so much for all your videos I have learned a LOT from them. I just made the canned mandarins. They turned out great! I discovered something while making them, quite by accident. I dropped one of the oranges in a bowl of water I had in the sink. When I took it out, I noticed the white stringy things were very loose unlike before. I took my thumb nail and rubbed across ridges on the surface of the orange, everything came off easily, so I finished the process by rinsing all my oranges to remove the white strings. Thought you might be interested.
I need to get some of those racks for my pots! When I water bath can, I use rings from the jars themselves. Just extra rings and I had stored. It works pretty well, but I'd much rather have some little racks like that. Another great video! ❤️❤️❤️
I was just thinking about my storage as well, wanting to put up mandarins and then your video popped up. I live in Florida and have many neighbors that have trees that drop their fruit . This winter I plan on getting a lot of free fruit to put up! Thanks for this video!!

AND....thanks to you, my first experience with pressure canning was doing raw chicken! Now I've put up 25 pints of chicken as well as 8 pints of beef chunks! You are the best teacher! Blessings to you and your hubby!
Thank you, it sounds like you and your husband have really gotten into canning. We appreciate that both you and your husband are watching our channel. Let us know how your adventures in canning progress.
@@RoseRedHomestead Food preservation has been a wonderful project for us to do together. Dan was slicing kiwi fruit to freeze-dry this morning as I was blanching cherries to see if I will get a better result with those in the freeze-dryer.
Saw the mandarins at Costco and the bag read “facile a peler”, so I thought “Bingo!”. Made them today in 1/5L Weck deco jars. Now I want to hang them on a Christmas tree as ornaments! LOL. They are so pretty. Thank you for giving me the confidence to feel safe and capable to can.
I have been wanting to can and finally purchased the supplies and a water bath canner. Watching. Your videos have made everything so simple for me. We just canned our first batch of these little cuties and we will be doing pineapple before the week ends. Our large family thanks you for helping us move toward food independence and security. Next month we will try our hand at pressure canning.
This is tomorrow's project. My husband brought home four bags from Costco so I was rewatching your video for tips. I love mandarin oranges but it's hard to find them canned that aren't from China. I don't buy food manufactured in China. The only place I can find mandarin oranges is organic specialty stores but the price can be steep. So I want to put some on my shelf. BTW I use Vitamin C powder I buy on Amazon for canning. I have a supply put away for these uncertain times. I buy the ascorbic acid already in one pound containers because they say shelf life is indefinite as long as it isn't exposed to excessive heat or light. So it's there if we need some Vitamin C or if I need it to can sometime in the future. As always thank you for a thorough video that helps me can safely.
My Mother was very particular about having the outside edge of the fruit against the walls of the jars too. That’s how I learned to can also. It does look beautiful lined along the shelves. I never would have thought about doing the Mandarins until I watched this. I wonder how much vitamin C is destroyed by the heat. It still is a nice treat to anticipate as a boost to the palate and up-lift the morale during stressful times. Good demonstration.
Thank you. Most of the Vitamin C in any food is destroyed by heat starting at about 80°F, which is why lots of products have it added after the heat process as in orange juice with added vitamin C. But I like you conclusion about it being a boost to the palate regardless!
Pam, I was intrigued about the idea of canning citrus, so this past week I picked up one bag of mandarin oranges to give it a try. After peeling and removing the pith, an unplanned trip out of town forced me to postpone canning. So, I placed the oranges in a bowl, covered with water; sealed them up. Went back three days later to process and to my surprise any remaining pith was very visible and came off with little to no effort. Processed and they look like commercially canned mandarin oranges. In the future, three days may be overkill, but a couple of hours may do the trick.
Such a brilliant idea. My neighbor and i were discussing our canning and pantry today with this pandemic. Living up north, we dont get a lot of fruit to can, so this is a great idea. Next time we get to town i am grabbing some mandarins. Thanks so much, you two are great.
I should have known !!!! If anyone would know how to pressure can oranges it would be you ! Thanks for posting this video. Mandarin and similar small oranges on occasion by me go on sale and I usually buy them, stick them in the fridge and forget about them. By the time I remember them they are spoiled or frozen.
Thank you! Have fun with canning the mandarins. We will be doing another citrus video soon after I learn more about a product that will dissolve the pith and membranes to make the prep time much less.
I tried your canning mandarins. I have short, cylindrical 250ml jars. So, I separated the mandarins into segments and removed the bitter bits. Otherwise, I followed your instructions. I hope they are tasty.
Try looking into Citrus Pectic Enzyme, Pectinase. If you soak your peeled Cuties overnight it will remove the pith string remainders. I'm not sure exactly what it will do to the nutritional values, but it makes the process easier. Great tutorial!
I learned about this enzyme from another subscriber and will be trying it this week. If I like the results, we will do another video on canning citrus. Thanks for your comments!
@RoseRed Homestead -- That "Woman with a Gadget" how did you go? I did this for my mandarins that were very pithy and they were fantastic. They look amazing too.
Dear Pam, I have been canning mandarin oranges as per your video. I just wanted to give you a little feedback on how to peel that I discovered. I had to wash one of the oranges off under running water just a dribble from the faucet. The white Strings came off so much easier under the dribbling running water. Used half the time to finish peeling thank you for your videos Anna Volkman Delaware

Any updates on sugar alternatives?
@@SAB48367 I bet a little Monk fruit powder would work, it is very sweet.
Mishell: Thanks for the tip. We will have to remember that the next time we can Mandarin oranges. Jim
I need to get some of those racks for my pots! When I water bath can, I use rings from the jars themselves. Just extra rings and I had stored. It works pretty well, but I'd much rather have some little racks like that. Another great video! ❤️❤️❤️
I’ve ordered the racks from A. Just measure the inside diameter of the pot, so you get the right size.
@@IMOO1896 And then hope you don't loose your rack, like I always loose them, oh and my glasses. Buy cheap ones if your house seems to eat things.
My canned mandarin oranges look so pretty on the shelf. Thank you for teaching us with all these wonderful videos.
Kay: Thank you for watching our videos. Jim
Your great Rose!!!! Thank you! For sharing and caring!
Now I am excited for when mandarin oranges are back in season. They look beautiful!
Thank you--and they are so good!
I was just thinking about my storage as well, wanting to put up mandarins and then your video popped up. I live in Florida and have many neighbors that have trees that drop their fruit . This winter I plan on getting a lot of free fruit to put up! Thanks for this video!!
That is awesome! What a blessing to have that fruit available!
This is so fabulous. I’m excited to try these.
Good morning...Firstly thank you for following CarolCooks2...I pickle and make chutneys..a lot..smile... but have not tried canning I now will as your video is so easy to follow...Thank you...I couldn't see how I could comment or follow your blog so have subscribed here...Have a lovely Sunday :)
So nice of you, thank you. We don't have a blog--just a Facebook page, and you are welcome to comment there as well.
Made 7 pints of oranges today. Thank you for the video. Can't wait to taste then.
Sounds great! Way to go!
Here it is July 5, 2021. I have two bags of mandarins to bottle and found this video. Timely for me. Doing this tomorrow. You talked about empty shelves and it has been quite an experience for most people. Myself, I have always had items on hand, mostly to save time. Enjoyed your comments at the beginning of video.
Thank you! Thanks for finding us.
Happy Thanksgiving and may God bless you and your family 🦃🦃🦃
Same to you!
What a wonderful idea!
Thank you! 😊
They look So Beautiful !!! You are so right about being quarantined for a while again, I am always prepared living in South Louisiana and with hurricanes and after Katrina not having lights for 28 days. We make sure we are prepared. Thank You for sharing your canning gifts, such a joy watching you. Blessings !!! ✝️💟
You are so welcome. Wow--no electricity for 28 days. Glad you were prepared for that!
RoseRed Homestead Yes Mam i learned a lesson from not being prepared enough after Katrina hit. Now this old girl is definitely prepared. 😍 Thank You for your response, and taking the time. Blessings !!!
@@Linda-kq8ef Sometimes life teaches us hard lessons, but the good news is that we learn, and then do better next time. Story of my life!
RoseRed Homestead Amen !!! Good words of wisdom !!! ✝️💟
Very, very enjoyable Thanks 😇
You are such a great teacher. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching.
Thank you for taking the time to post this and other! You're genuine desire to teach is very apparent. Canned 10 lbs of mandarines today! :)
WooHoo! You are so welcome! And that is amazing work!
This is brilliant. I use a lot of lemon juice and have been wondering what I could substitute if I had no refrigeration. Canning lemons could work. I'm still working my way through your videos and will be looking out for the candied citrus peels. Again, such excellent information and presented so we'll. Thank you Pam and Jim!
I've seen canned, pickled and salted lemons, good idea.
I would have never thought about something like this. This is something I am going to have to try!
They are so good--and look so pretty in these squatty pint jars! I think you will really enjoy them!
You Rock RoseRed 🤩
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching.
What a fabulous idea! the fruit in our trees are juuuust starting to turn color, I cant wait to try it! Thank you for sharing. :)
You are so welcome! Have a wonderful time canning your citrus! We are going to do another one on canning citrus very soon using a product I just learned about that will help remove the pith and membranes, so watch for it.
I've really enjoyed watching your videos. I've freeze-dried Mandarin oranges and just started canning after watching your videos! You have inspired me so much and even my hubby was inspired to pickle okra from our garden. I purchased a couple of bags of Mandarin oranges to can tomorrow!
What a fantastic idea! Love it! Thanks for watching.
Love that! You are very welcome!
That sounds fabulous!
Thank you for this comment. I appreciate knowing about the vitamin C powder!
Looks good. Would add a nice variety to the pantry.
They are great in mandarin orange chicken salad.
Sounds delicious! Thanks for the tip.
That should be fun to experiment with, Jim
Such a brilliant idea. My neighbor and i were discussing our canning and pantry today with this pandemic. Living up north, we dont get a lot of fruit to can, so this is a great idea. Next time we get to town i am grabbing some mandarins. Thanks so much, you two are great.
Thank you!
I Love your canning sessions. Thank you for this.
You are so welcome! Glad you like them.
I always learn something new from you.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching.
Looks like fun! Can't wait to try it! Another fun adventure with Jim & Pam! Happy Thanksgiving! I will be making your cranberry salad very soon!!!
Thank you! Have fun with canning the mandarins. We will be doing another citrus video soon after I learn more about a product that will dissolve the pith and membranes to make the prep time much less.
Thank you for this video. I can’t wait to try this.
Hope you like it!
Those are so pretty!
Thank you! 😊
New subscriber from Australia, I’m loving your videos, you are such an inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing 😊💕
Welcome!! From Australia!! Thank you for you kind comments. We are so glad to have you along on our adventures.
Anna: Thanks for sharing!! Jim
Yes, I need to do this! Great tip on keeping vitamin C on hand.
Yes it is. Glad you enjoyed it.
@@RoseRedHomestead canning more today. Always think about you when I can something you showed on video. Have a great weekend!
