Hey Darren, brilliant video - thanks so much for sharing all your knowledge and experience. Was just wondering if you every used the "Filmbox" film emulation plugin in your projects?
This is a real tribute to the work the Dehancer team have put into making their tools artistic as well as technically accurate emulations, I'm constantly on the fence about buying it and your discount is making it very tempting! Just thinking about another comment here, I wonder if you've ever considered doing a few videos trying to recreate the signature look of a particular series or movie that has caught your eye recently? I just finished watching Shogun and the choices they made to build that look are fascinating, lots of natural light and very characterful anamorphic lenses. Would be amazing to hear your thoughts on how you'd approach a similar project, if you think that'd be helpful to people 😊
Hi. Lots of those signature looks come from set, lighting and wardrobe. They often sit under a show lut too. Its not my style of channel to emulate excat films for this reason...I prefer to show you how to create great grades and how the tools work together. Thanks for commenting though.
Darren, I've noticed that shifting the hue slider to the left circumvents the defocusing effect that takes place. Granted, it only works if you're ok with the halation being red. Must be a bug within the beta; hope it gets resolved soon.
The one thing that frustrates me with that tool is the black level fading it has that's inescapable, other than a node with Black Offset moved down afterward. If I could maintain my original black level before turning it on, it would be the perfect little look builder to have in the toolbox. I hope they bring that option when DR19 comes out of beta.

You dont have to buy anything for Resolve. The plugins make it easier and give you more tools. Film Look Creator gives cinematic options but not film stocks like Dehancer.
Hi Darren. I apologize for asking a somewhat unrelated question, I tried to update to Resolve 19 from the "Update" menu option in 18.6. It gave me a couple error msg boxes, but finished install. I restarted computer 3 times. Now, Resolve 19 "Loading ***** " window comes up, goes away, then . . . nothing at all! I tried to reinstall Resolve 19 from scratch, but it says "new version" is already there and to remove it in control panel. I'm assuming "uninstall Program" is what it is meaning. I'm afraid to do that before I copy the project files to a non-Davinci Resolve folder (not sure which folder or what file extension to look for) in case the uninstall/reinstall "from scratch" option erases the project folder contents. Any advice?
It seems like there might be some remnants from the previous installation causing conflicts. Here's what you can do: 1. Uninstall Resolve 19 - Go ahead and uninstall DaVinci Resolve 19 using the "Uninstall Program" option from the Control Panel. This won't delete your project files; it only removes the application itself. - If you're concerned about your project files, don't worry-I'll guide you on how to safely back them up. 2. Backup Your Project Files - DaVinci Resolve stores project files in a specific location. On Windows, they are typically located here: ``` C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\ ``` Replace `` with your actual Windows username. - Navigate to that folder using File Explorer (you might need to enable hidden folders). Inside, you'll find subfolders for each of your projects. - Copy the entire project folder (including all its contents) to a safe location outside of the DaVinci Resolve folder. You can create a new folder on your desktop or any other drive. 3. Clean Reinstall DaVinci Resolve 19 - After backing up your projects, go ahead and uninstall DaVinci Resolve 19 completely. - Download the latest version of DaVinci Resolve 19 from the [official Blackmagic Design website](www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/). - Install it fresh. During installation, you won't lose your project files because they're stored separately from the application. 4. Restore Your Projects - Once Resolve 19 is installed, open it. - Go to the "File" menu and choose "Open Project." - Navigate to the location where you backed up your project files and select the project you want to open. - Resolve will load your project, and you should be good to go! Remember, your project files (with the `.drp` extension) are separate from the application itself. Uninstalling DaVinci Resolve won't touch your project data. Just make sure you've backed up those project folders before proceeding..
@@CGToonStudio hi. Thank you so much for your help with this. I was just playing around with this a day or so ago and it occurred to me that I had had trouble with the 18.6% installation because the control panel portion of the software. So I uninstalled just the control panels and then it worked perfect. Sorry for troubling everybody, it should have occurred to me earlier.
I have a pressing question I haven't found an answer to. Being a colorist maybe you can help me. I use a Mac Book Pro m2 Max chip as well as one with an Intel chip. On both computers, I have noticed that the video I exported after color grading it in Davinci resolve, does not look the same. Inside DR it looks great but the exploited one looks less saturated and does not have the same contrast I added when I color-graded it. I have Googled for a response and what I see its a lot of people experiencing the same (using premiere Pro as well as Savici resolve) but no real confirmation or solution. This leads me to believe is a MAC issue and not a Davinci Issue, but I am hoping there is a solution to make the exported file look as close as possible to what was graded in DR. I am using DR 19 latest beta and my monitors are calibrated for REC 709. HE:LP!
davinci can be a bit confusing when it comes to this. im on my phone and dont know the details by heart, but in a nutshell you'll have to set up both davinci and your project properly in order for your exports & youtube uploads to look like what you're seeing in resolve when you're color grading. on your project, make sure to set your color to davinci yrgb, and timeline and output to rec-709a. on davinci's options you'll have to click on 10-bit precision something or other, as well as an option that tags clips to rec709a. also, when u deliver, make sure to export with color and gamut set to rec-709a. this should guarantee you a 1-1-1 export. if you know how to do a cst workflow, u can select "davinci widegamut" on the timeline setting of your project settings rather than rec-709a. hope this helps!
@@BobbyDjorgasDaVinici Resolve is not the problem, but RUclips makes a mess of it and also throws compression on top of it. Your explanation is otherwise correct. I already wrote this 'manual', but that is no longer necessary 😀 Unfortunately, many people review videos via RUclips. However, this gives a completely wrong image on your screen. Coincidentally, a funny pun. So always pay attention to whether you are working on a PC or a Mac and choose the correct output. As a press media company, we always remind customers that they should not review the video via RUclips.

The grain is just a layover - LAME. It needs its own compound node. I Instantly disregarded it after I adjusted the size of the grain and I saw the whole thing get bigger. That’s not how grain works. Cheap emulation makes me cringe. It’s been almost ten years since Yedlin made his emulation publicly known. We should have indistinguishable emulation by now. Some have achieved the essence well enough.
Darren you're such a great educator as well as colourist! I was wondering if you could do a video on 'proofing'. Doing colour work on for example, a Benq calibrated display, but then content when viewed by most people on a Macbook Pro XDR P3 1600nits display/standard profile - the blacks look crushed because the way the screen tech can display blacks. So isn't it better to do colour work on an XDR display if you think most viewers will view your content on that display? It's a bit confusing to understand how to work when thinking the end viewer isn't in a controlled environment! Any wisdom on this in a vid?
@@DarrenMostyn I guess that's the answer I'm actually looking for. I use a calibrated BenQ Sw272U which I know and love from my photography background. I've just had clients want grade changes made which are clearly because of their own viewing setup as per my monitor and scopes, I can see what's going on. I advise them but ultimately give them what they want. I guess it's been a bit of a minefield trying to see if I can control something, that I can't control :D And I guess on location client reviews is the ultimate way to avoid those situations. I was just debating if I should get enhancer or if 19 can replace it. Do you still think Dehancer is worth it?
FYI, I told my brother about you, he was so amazed at your wealth of knowledge! His was response was, "he's cold!" 😂
Dehancer is way to go! DARREN10 gives you 10% off too. I use it on every job, even now FLC is out. Say Hi to your brother - do i know him ?
i clicked the link but never got to the node download...excellent lesson btw
Correction - i see it comes inside the email sent after you sign in...noted with thanks...
I would imagine someone could take the time and effort to emulate the 2383 (or others) look with FLC and have it saved as a preset. Perhaps DaVinci will add some film looks in future updates. It looks like a promising tool though anyway.
I dont think FLC is trying to do film emulation - its designed to create your own filmic looks.
This just felt like an indirect ad for dehancer... you didn't play around enough with the film look creator.
Ive done plenty of research of FLC - I dont just open these tools for the first time and start recording an episode.. There is also a follow up video for FLC I made. These are just my honest opinions and can be proved with how I use the tools in my paid professional work. You are welcome to your opinion too. All the best, Darren
F4, brilliant, thank you.
"...This combined with dehancer..." Come on Darren... 😂
well Im not going to be uninstalling Dehancer in a hurry for sure! The Bleach by-pass is actually very nice on FLC.
Darren, a quick question if I may, would you group clips similar together and add film look or Dehancer or do you add on each individual clip?
Groups for sure !! I only show here as clip level to keep the tutorial easy to follow.! Thanks, good question.
@@DarrenMostyn okay, got that, good I’m not mad because that’s how I do it.
@@DarrenMostynOr perhaps even at timeline level to keep it really simple and consistent?
can you make a video about how to set up a MacBook 14 pro " for the best result color grading wise... ? many of us are color grading on a MacBook.. thanks
Not my channel really - I dont grade on a macbook 14" ?? Sorry.
@@DarrenMostyn sure you dont, I know! but some of us do... maybe make a poll on which system we grade . I am pretty sure 40% are Mac users on MacBook pros, iMacs etc... was just a thought... thanks though for sharing your knowledge
Its for other channels to make TBH. Im not a fan of grading on macbook so I stay sincere to my principles. Calibrated monitor.
@@DarrenMostyn 😀👍
I see what you did there.
in dehancers notes, they mentioned to put dehancer at the end of the node tree. why is yours before the end of the node tree? as in right before your ODT node
Because Im in DWG and have set dehancer to behave that way. Please use my way for best results. Their notes I expect are aimed at beginners.
@@DarrenMostyn thank you so much! I understand.
Hi I’m just a beginner but should I buy Dehancer pro? Or I can make a video look cinematic without those plugins?
You dont have to buy anything for Resolve. The plugins make it easier and give you more tools. Film Look Creator gives cinematic options but not film stocks like Dehancer.

Thanks! usefull :)
Good video.
Here's what you can do:
1. Uninstall Resolve 19
- Go ahead and uninstall DaVinci Resolve 19 using the "Uninstall Program" option from the Control Panel. This won't delete your project files; it only removes the application itself.
- If you're concerned about your project files, don't worry-I'll guide you on how to safely back them up.
2. Backup Your Project Files
- DaVinci Resolve stores project files in a specific location. On Windows, they are typically located here:
```
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\
```
Replace `` with your actual Windows username.
3. Clean Reinstall DaVinci Resolve 19
- After backing up your projects, go ahead and uninstall DaVinci Resolve 19 completely.
- Download the latest version of DaVinci Resolve 19 from the [official Blackmagic Design website](www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/).
- Install it fresh. During installation, you won't lose your project files because they're stored separately from the application.
4. Restore Your Projects
- Once Resolve 19 is installed, open it.
- Go to the "File" menu and choose "Open Project."
- Navigate to the location where you backed up your project files and select the project you want to open.
@@sheltonherbert4138 Glad 😊.
I am already suscribed to the channel but can't seems to get the node tree. Is their a direct link
The link is in the welcome email you would get when you subscribed to my free newsletter. there is no direct link, sorry.
So you didn't finish the color grade to get the look you wanted?
I showed how to use Film Look Creator ?
My Name is Darsh Jain I started learning video editing in da vinci resolve but ia have a doubt where do i start watching your videos it is very complicated .
I have playlists. see my channel page.
how to render a Group as Single video file in davinci resolve 18 ?
Im yet to view this and I'm rejoicing already
Appreciated - hope you enjoy it! darren.,
So are your footage shot in a log profile or not?
Yes in this instance
looks great, but its still not quite Dehancer
So why did you stopped using dehancer in rec709?
because it works best in large colour space - DWG
great
Good content but I had to play the video at 0.75 speed to hear it at normal speed...
Thats what the speed control is for! Content is the same whatever speed you like it at.
10:29 you actually changed hue angle from its default value 20 to 0.
Im looking at the image and trying to make a tutorial. I dont usually speak to a camera when im actually grading either.
I wish to be a good editor with davinci
practise!
Still struggling with why people want to degrade contemporary images to look like film shot with old lenses. Having said that it does look nicer…..
you answered your own question I think!
I appreciate for ur effort but If blackmagic really serious about the look development tool they need to put so much effort on to this, like baselight has chromogen tool , otherwise its a very basic tool...
It will get built on Im sure. its first release.
@@DarrenMostyn I am excited
Thanks for the kind words, but I grade on a calibrated monitor without compromise. What it is viewed on after Ive graded it is out of my control.
Thanks for the reply!
@@studio23.agency trust your monitor - if you know its calibrated of course!
