Room of Hoard Defrag 2023 Clean, Declutter and Organize Art Supplies with me!

  • It's that time of year again! Time to get our act together and shape up the workspace! My big motivation is making room for my pottery wheel in the Room of Hoard. Do you think I can do it?
Do, you remember defragmenting your computer back in the day? It's when you would push all the files together in one big brick so you have a big chink of free space? Well, that is the same concept as the art room defrag. I will be defragging (cleaning, decluttering, and consolidating) my art supplies so I can see what I've used up and what I have an excess of. It's eye-opening and I do it every January to keep the hoard under control.
*Please note I use the term "hoard" in a loving way, I do not mean to downplay anyone with hoarding disorder.
I have no links, all of my stuff is old and repurposed. You can find cute things at IKEA I hear LOL!
Let me know if you want an in-depth tour of the filming room or Room or Hoard.

Just look what good condition those supplies are in, even the older stock! This is so important for artists to see, because not only is a clean, organized space a nicer place to work, it also avoids waste and spoilage! We won't pretend this video doesn't make us feel like the pressure's on to tidy up our own studios, but it's the kind of coaching we need for starting out the New Year!

I love this video for two reasons:
    1) This is continuing proof that most of us artists don't have uncluttered, designer studios like you see in magazines and Pinterest photos. The vast majority of us utilize found assortments of furniture, shelving, containers, etc to store and keep our supplies and we typically Tetris it all together to maximize space as much as possible. Functionality and practicality takes priority over aesthetics.
    2) You narrate what is basically the artist's stream of consciousness when redoing/reorganizing/purging an art studio and it makes me so happy that I'm not the only one who has these same conversations with myself when I'm going through all of my stuff.
I think your work spaces turned out amazing!

I can use the space better, however so here I go 😁

It's so refreshing to see someone who does this for a living with a craft room that looks used and a bit crazy! There are so many fully matchy matchy pretty white craft rooms that are completely unachievable for lots of people. Yours shows a real 'make do and mend' type aesthetic which is so much more sustainable and better for our planet! Thanks Lindsay xx

About your acrylic paint storage dilemma: all of us fall into the trap of thinking it’s always best to store all like-things together but it seems like you actually answered this for yourself since you use them now where they are in part because they are not stored far away with their brethren. Like you, I used to think I needed to store all my stamps in the same place but some are planner stamps so they would never be used if they aren’t with my planner supplies. Hope this helps! I think your storage room needs some piece of inspirational happiness to personalize it for you. Maybe a painting on a storage cabinet? Something to make you feel happy about going in there. The makeup table could be a treasured hand-me-down for one of your daughters. Those are back in style now. Enjoy your space. You inspire us so much & are very a very talented artist and art teacher. Your STUDIO is an awesome resource & you are a gifted lady! Enjoy.

For your stamp wheels: have you considered making sample swatches from them? A binder ring hung on a hook full of numbered tags with corresponding numbers written on the inner barrel from a paint pen would help you to quickly locate which one makes which design. I love your spaces & can’t wait to see your pottery! Your easel will get so much more use now that you are able to access it better. I Love your wall mural! Maybe you should update/refresh your mural so it will pull you in & inspire you now?

Roll them across a sheet of paper, label
    by row #.
    Easy to access and view.
I put my stamped pages in a small 3 ring binder.
Or you could tape them in front of the roll they represent. Just flip up and pull off roll.

I love that your studio is organized but not crazy. I, too, often keep interesting segmented food things, and I love dollar store containers. If it works, who cares where it came from? I'm not as organized as you - I either over-organize with too many sub-categories to the point of madness, or I toss every size plastic/metal/wood container into a bunch of disorganized bins.
Like you, I have many hobbies and ways of making art, so a LOT of supplies in a bazillion categories (including a disused kiln in the garage and fancy woodworking equipment!). Having watched your video, however, I now feel that there's hope for me to organize in a way that works for me. I have a hodge-podge of furniture and industrial shelving and other storage stuff acquired over time. But I now feel waaay better about not wanting to deal with the limits of wrestling all my stuff into a wall of perfection in the form of stacked IKEA cubes (although I surely appreciate looking at such walls!).
Thanks again for another fab video! 😊

I redesigned and and built our kitchen back in 2019 and now that I'm thinking about creating an art space I'm reusing some of the same ideas because they can work for both spaces. In the kitchen I separated different functions into different zones and then put the items I needed to use into the zone that I'd use them in. So depending on what was used in a particular zone, they either got drawer or cupboard storage. I must say that I prefer drawers over cupboards, especially the low cupboards that you always seem to end up down on your hands and knees exploring the back of lol. In the drawers, the cutlery or utensil trays or the partitions you get to sort out your socks, come in really handy for sorting out paint tubes or other bits like washi tapes. I've learned to keep the water based activities away from the computer or anything electrical and if I am doing a painting from a reference photo I keep the tablet or monitor up on a stand above the bench in case my paint water tries to escape again 😂 My daughter likes to sew so I'm planning out a separate area for her to work in and we've found some plastic drawers that she can store her fabric in where she can see it. I'm okay with my supplies tucked away out of sight but she needs to be able to see hers to help her create so our different work styles call for different storage solutions too. It's turning out to be quite a fun project.

You gave me good reorganizing ideas for my art room. I use a spare bedroom on the main level of my home and it has served me well for my watercolor art. However in the last year or so I have expanded into charcoal, soft and oil pastels and color pencils. I'm in the process of getting my ( generally unused) basement into an art space. It's a great fully finished basement and only used for guests so excited to utilize it better for my expanding art.

If I may make one suggestion. Thrown pottery sprays beyond the wheel & bowl. I would move the alcohol inks and drop down a shower curtain rod & put a clear shower curtain in front of my binders. You can still see the binders, but A shower is much easier to take down & hose off than wiping down those shelves & binders. I have your same “container addiction “. Safely in downsizing I had to be severe. But did keep a few.

I love when you do these videos. People tend to think organizing is a "one and done" activity, but it is a constantly evolving process as you learn what works best, decide what's important to you now, and gain new interests. I used to feel like such a failure because my organizing didn't last, but now I'm grateful for the assessment process - seeing what I have accomplished and learned. Keep being real, Lindsay!
Organizing craft supplies when you do many different crafts is so hard, because so many things make sense in different categories. I use so many supplies in ways they weren't intended, so unless I have multiple copies to store with each craft, it makes more sense to group by what type of item it is, but if I do that, then when I do a craft, I have to grab supplies from 10 different areas lol. Adding to the confusion is that I also do nail art and home repair - my glitters, rhinestones, striping tapes also work well on cards, my dremel fixes acrylic nails and does sculpting, needle nose pliers do everything lol.

As for follow up vids, your mission, if you choose to accept it: I would love your input on how to plan and set up a craft room from scratch (or reorg from the bottom up) with emphases on space (work & storage), varieties of disciplines (how to determine what is a necessity, what to invest in, and best utilization of space), and of course costs.(what to invest in, what you can skimp on, and what you can reasonably skip,). Advice on unusual or often overlooked resources would be appreciated, too. That’s probably fodder for a whole series! Thanks for the tour!

Speaking of “hoarding adventures” 😂 I took the dive and bought the petty excellent pallette to treat myself because I recently fell in Love with the Paul Ruben’s watercolors, and got the 48 pan set for Christmas. When I was on Amazon they showed in the pictures that the Pretty excellent palette now has half pans instead of the plastic casing! Well alas when it arrived today in the mail it did not ! 😂 needless to say I left a colorful review for Amazon shortly afterwards, but really love the paint 😂thanks for recommending them Lindsay ! There as great as you say! 😂

You got an old palette then. The version with pans is pretty new, a German youtuber had one shipped by the company and said that the 48 half pans is a new thing that just came out recently and it's apparently not even available everywhere yet.

@@jessieg4901 I guess the sellers are just clearing out what they got until it's gone, hoping that people aren't going to even notice that there is a newer version. I agree though, nomally they should be selling the older version for cheaper. But hey, it's still great paint and well worth the money even at full price. 😃

Well done! It makes me happy to see I’m not the only one who does many different crafts,! I was told “choose one or two and get rid of the rest” but oddly enough, i do go back and re do old crafts. And i also find i manage to incorporate different types into one project. So now it’s a question of re-organizing into same stuff rather than same craft.like you said same with same makes more sense! Thank you so much for this
I don’t know if you have done this already but I’d like to see how you organize your paint brushes.

@@thaliacrafts407 hi, what about the “stuff” that is used in more than one craft? I’ve started to do leather “burning “ and use the same tool as when i do pyrog on wood? At the moment i have those tools in a separate box, and don’t want to duplicate tools! And the stamps that i use as “stencils” …. It gets complicated🤔 i keep thinking there must be a better way! Thankfully there are labels! But i still would not give up creating ,just wish i had a little elf to put things away after the project is done!😀

My only difference is I don’t teach anyone to make things or create to sell right now. I am a full time night shift worker which makes it very hard to create due to being tired all the time…
But, I’m hoping to attempt a different sleep schedule and try to start making things again! I have to do something because my place is overrun with crafting things. Wish me luck… I think your “ROOM OF HOARD” looks great now!! Take care, hugs from Hershey PA 🥰 xoxoxo

I love your organizing videos, Lindsay! My only question, or concern, is that, as is, there's no space for your legs under the sewing machine table -- without moving, I think, two possibly heavy items each time you want to sew. That would (does!) hinder me. Lovelovelove your stamp display! Thanks for filming your process!

I always enjoy watching when you de-clutter/clean/organize your craft spaces. It gives me ideas on improved ways to organize my space (which is always in a state of flux). After watching your last Sat-chat and saw a bit of what you did it got motivated to clean/reorganize my space a bit. I actually found several items I lost. 🤣 The last time I did a deep de-clutter like what you just did, I actually rediscovered things I had forgotten I had. And I actually smiled at seeing your 'box of boxes' and repurposed food packaging.... because I have a very similar "box of boxes" and packaging that I might fine a use for. I organize quite a bit with up-cycled packaging/boxes. They are so useful and best of all... free!! Thanks for sharing, your spaces came out great!! And your mural wall is so cheerful!

You think that's a room of hoard? It's beautifully organized and looks great to me. I have metal racks in my craft room, but they are wonderful for the purpose. Meant for garages or workshops, they aren't furniture, they are galvanised steel, but look shiny and clean in my craft room. They are deep enough for 12 x 12 papers, about 30" wide, (so two stacks of pads with space between) and five foot tall, with five shelves if you use the top (which of course I do) and they are strong! Each shelf holds 175 kg or 385 pounds and believe me, some of mine are tested with paper and card! They hold a vast amount, they cost £35 each now, which I think is a snip, and I recommend them to anyone who has a suitable space and wants to keep their things compact, clean, tidy and accessible. Of course you need somewhere you don't mind a metal rack, but they can be made to look pretty-ish. I love the miscellany of super cupboards and shelves you've acquired, but in the absence of those, these racks are superb, and why should the men have all the best storage gear? Thank you for your good advice.
