I inherited a bunch of sewing tools/notions from both of my grandmothers, with whom I was very close, when they passed. They were both seamstresses and had some interesting tools from "back in the day". I created a couple of shadow boxes with some vintage fabric at the back and made a collage of sorts with some old pattern pieces and then placed some different tools and notions (i.e. stork scissors, needles/cases, wooden spools of thread, scalloped seam markers, etc.) in the foreground. They turned out beautiful and I get to see them every day and remember when they each took a turn at teaching me to sew through the years.

    Hi Sher,
I just wanted to say I identify with you on so many levels on hoarding craft supplies for various reasons. I have thousands (true) that I have from being a former store owner and besides that a life-long crafter.
I am slowing sifting through things little by little, throwing, creating donate and sell bins and trying to select a very limited KEEP bin. I get very emotional too as so many things I have relate to my dad, who made everything I needed from fixtures to shelving, to workshop projects... I miss him so much.
But my husband and I are now about to retire and we need to downsize from a 5 bedroom home to maybe a 2 one whete I hope to have enough room for a den or something for my hobbies.the struggle is real! But it has also made me feel extremely shameful for the amount of craft supplies I have sitting in a room not being used. No one should have this much "stuff" in their house, let alone a room or 2.
I'm do glad I ran across your video and your journey to declutter and learn to let go of things with emotional attachments. THANK YOU for being real and honest with your viewers❤

Awwww thank you for your kind words! I wish you luck in your downsizing task! It sure does feel good once it’s all done and you know the things you let go of are in the hands of others that can and will enjoy them and are no longer weighing you emotionally down! ❤️

Wow! Sher, you did such a great job! I shed a few tears with you. I’m so sorry for the loss of your Mom! I’m headed in to my craft room to do a massive purge. I just keep buying more. Most of my stuff has never been used. It’s ridiculous. I have too many choices and I get up and just walk out. It’s sad. I would rather have someone enjoy the stuff I don’t use. You should be so proud of yourself. Be well. Enjoy your new space😻

Kelly Jo you just summed up exactly how I was feeling every time I looked at all my crafting stuff! There was so much of it, it overwhelmed me and I didn’t even know what to make with it anymore! So much of what I donated and gave away was brand new and still in their original packages, I kept buying more and more until one day something just clicked in my head and I finally said no more! I haven’t even had the urge to go to Dollar Tree the past few weeks, I don’t want to buy more stuff now because this was such a huge job and I feel like I have wasted so much money! At least I feel good about others getting to use a lot of it! Good luck with the purge and organization of your craft room! 😘

As a fellow craft hoarder, I can tell you that purging what you don;t use every 2 years has worked for me. As a teacher, I can tell you that before/after school programs, Senior centers, nursing homes, Girl Scouts, art teachers are GREAT places to contact...along with homeless or abuse shelters where kids may be. Good luck with your process, emotional and hoarder-wise!

I needed to see this! I don't craft because I have too much as a collector and hoarder of craft items. I have been working on it this summer. I have lots to donate. I have no emotional attachment to anything. I just want to make sure things go to people who will use them because I spent lots on them. I am proud of you for giving away your mom's things. That is hard. My mom passed away 30 yrs ago. I think of her daily and miss her very much. Those feelings don't go away. So give yourself a big hug for a job well done. Thank you for sharing your hard work.

This popped up in my RUclips suggestions today and it was perfect timing. I can soooo relate! I’ve been buying and hoarding supplies for years and I’ve reached the point where I’m feeling so overwhelmed and weighed down by it all. I have to work in my dining room so I have stuff stored EVERYWHERE! I decide last month that I need to do some major purging in order to be able to organize. I’ve finally found my niche where I know what crafts I enjoy now so that has helped me figure out what I need and what can go. I’m very much into all kinds of paper crafts and have taken some art classes for marker and coloured pencil colouring as well as watercolours and I do that for card making. I could go on and on but in a nutshell I started purging and have donated so much stuff and trashed some other things. I still have a lot to do as I have an Etsy Shop where I sell my crafts now so I’m busy doing Fall and Christmas items right now but I schedule 1 hour everyday for purging. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in just one hour. Anyway, it seems I’m writing a book so I’ll end this by saying thank you for not having the perfect matchy matchy craft room but instead a realistic one that most of us can really relate too. I know your mom would be so happy knowing that you’re finding good homes for her things.

I love to organize my craft area. I cannot create in a mess. You did a wonderful job with this. Your room is very nice and that closet is so great to have. My crafting only extends to paper and fabrics with ephemera, silk flowers, beads, ribbons, and inks, embossing folders and stamps/dies for making cards and journals. I live in a one bedroom condo and half my living room is my craft area so space is at a premium. I use part of my bedroom and bedroom clothes closet as my inventory rooms! I think I have done a phenomenal job of not only getting all my supplies to fit but to make it livable and aesthetically pleasing to look at. I have been reorganizing my craft area for years but finally settled on a plan I like after doing several major purges. That is important to me that my living space doesn’t look like a warehouse but is pretty and neat. Happy crafting in your new well ordered space!

I lost my mom in April, so I know somewhat how you feel. I left all my mom's craft stuff, even things I made for a craft room setup for her. I did take her container of crocheted snowflakes she was in the process of creating. I can feel your love and sadness for your loss.
I don't want to leave all my crafts for someone to have to figure out. I also hoard crafts stuff. I have tried many crafting hobbies. Some I still love, but now I am sewing a lot again, so my craft stuff sits more than not. I also watercolor and want to get better and do more. But I have so much attachment to my stamps, stickers and other paper crafting supplies, they are all in the original cases and many work together. I have tried to sell them and wind up buying them back. I am motivated very much by your tenacity and creative work to find homes for your craft items.
I took all the furniture out of one of my spare bedrooms and created a lot of great storage, on the walls and in those wonderful 12 x 12 file drawers and boxes Michaels sells. That space helps me to use my crafting things without messing up my sewing room.
Great job purging. I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I certainly know how difficult parting with anything that was hers can be. Thanks for sharing.

I do love watercolor painting, I have done tole, but I not for years, I also love to make my own cards and decorate gift bags. I have become a seasoned patternmaker, and expert seamstress. I have my own bra making classes which I am closing due to lack of interest. But I love creating all things and trying new things. Time and energy are both in very short supply.

    What a BEAUTIFUL TRANSFORMATION!
I really believe that thru the last year that you have kept your crafting supplies in check.
You KNEW how much to declutter....and went at it like a CHAMP!😃
I too, have been decluttering my crafting and the garage which is where my crafting space is.
So far, we have done some major decluttering in that area.
Bought one shelving unit to make things more efficient and accessible....so worth the time and money.
Then, got rid of a piece of furniture, 2 shelving units, and a deep freeze.. that needed to be let go.
I'm not done yet, but the space that has opened up has been incredible!
    Sick right now, but
should be back at it on Tuesday....so ANXIOUS to finish.
I can already tell that next year....my goal will probably be to let go of another crafting shelving unit.
That is SO INCREDIBLE that you were able to donate and sell so much.....isn't it a GREAT FEELING?
    AGAIN, AMAZING JOB!!
    TRULY, TFS ❤

Oh my, I just found you with this video. I'm crying and don't know if I can watch this one. But I can binge watch everything else!! I love paper crafting, and I crochet. I actually have a shop in which I crochet and make this beanie. I am messaging because I have some of my mom's stuff from when she passed. I'm not there yet. My mom passed in 2016. The one thing I did get was a bag of trash, her paper trash. It is not a nice story, but my sister and sister-in-law took 95% of her crafting stuff and gave it to my nieces. They don't really craft, not like I do. I got trash. I also got her cricut cartridges. I do have a cricut, so that was ok. I've kept the trash, and it shows me how the cancer progressed. Some other miscellaneous things that I have not used. Just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I really understand what it takes and CONGRATULATIONS!!! Thank you for sharing this, I do appreciate it. It will take me days to watch this one, but now I'm onto binge watching the rest while I make a beanie!!

Thank you for sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of converting craft room hoarding into craft room curating. The vast sewing/quilting stuff inherited from my late mother and gifted to me by more experienced quilters often feels more of a weight than a blessing. I know all those gals would rather the stuff be used and enjoyed by someone f not myself, and it’s beyond time. I look forward not to the process you’ve undertaken here, but to the result. Happy crafting, and thanks again.

My Mom passed away the end of last November. Both of us have full craft rooms(card making ). I have been slowly bringing stuff home and going thru. I have a lot left. Thankfully I have a couple of friends that I can share with. It has been hard letting go of things but I have started with the duplicates as we had similar tastes. I also have her clothes and the rest of her stuff. Plus things she still had packed up when she remarried and moved in with my step dad. Slowly making progress.
Yours turned out great! I am sure it’s a bit of a relief to have it done. ☺️

I just saw this, I was looking for ways to deal with things I have as far as crafting. When I heard you talk about your mother my heart sunk in my chest.
I'm so sorry for your loss and I know what it is. I lost my mom years ago and I too have had real issues with all the things I've kept of my mom's. It's so hard to let go, no one can tell you to either. The fact that you are where you are, is something you are getting help with. Your mom can see where you are now. I know my mom can as well, does it stop the hurt and tears?---no. People tell you it gets easier with time---it's all they know to say during a tough time. The truth is, it still really hurts but, you gain acceptance over what you can't change.
I'm glad to see how you've done this and prayers to you and your family.

My mom passed away 9 years ago and my grandmother did in '95. I still live in her house which is a generational homestead so I've inherited everything from everyone as an only child. This is so hopeful and although I have donated or thrown away a lot it seems like more accumulates. How does that happen? But I have been crafting and collecting all my life and realized a few years ago I was at saturation point and don't have room to make all the ideas I have. So something has to go. I've never sold on marketplace so I'm going to check into that for sure. Thanks for sharing this. I know it's helped me get going again with what I need to do to start living my own life. I don't want my kids to have to go through everything either. Thanks again.

I noticed that it took me several rounds going through my things to more fully declutter. The first time, I just took out the really obvious stuff and left a lot of stuff I wanted to think longer on. Later, I’d go through the things again and a bunch of items I wanted more time to think about, made their way into the discard pile. It looks like you did a lot, but may have a few more rounds to go, if you sit a bit on those items you kept and think about how much use they will really get.
It took me years to declutter items I got from my grandma. I finally decided that objects are not to be worshipped and have no value. Having made several moves in which previous items were broken, helped me get to that realization.

Awesome😊 Looks amazing. Sher, I wanted to share with you my experience of organization & declutter process. 12 years ago I remarried. My husband & I began to get our home ready as to begin our new life together. He traveled a lot with his job throughout the state's & 15 yrs in the military. So, he had a garage, a guest house that use to be a Beauty Salon that was full & home loll. Wheww talk about overwhelmed. So, we begin the process of sorting, organizing, give away & throw away. Not to mention all my collection of 40 years. Lol😂
I suffered panic attacks for about 27 yrs total & got worse when my Step Dad passed away because he was my Dad since I was 14 yrs old. My go to, my rock, etc. I loved him so much. Well as going through my things after not using them for like 10 years, it was very emotional. I had all these things he had bought me for Christmas, birthdays etc. along with my grandmother's gifts, antiques etc.
As I was going through those boxes I would break completely down & run outside. I knew I wasn't going to be able to keep all those things & as I was separating them, broken items as well, putting them in each box to let go of, I felt like I was throwing them out along with the gifts. It got to much & I quit. We have all this love bottled inside of us for our loved ones & no way to express that love to them in person & that hit home & broke my heart all over again.
So, during this I became a crafter & started another collection lolll I was a Dollar Tree & Hobby Lobby cheerleader & hoarder Lolll. So, the guest house/craft house had to get decluttered again because We decided to build a home. 4 years later I'm glad to say I am organized, only buy what I'm using & finishing up the remaining of my craft stash. It feels so great & the hard work diffiently paid off. Like you I won't ever let it get like that again.😊

I've come upon this video at least a year after you posted it, and I want to thank you for it! I'm looking for motivation to purge excess craft supplies in a room that serves as a guest room. Listening to you talk through some of your process was so helpful. I think I'm beginning my craft supplies purge today!
I love that your storage isn't "perfect". I actually consider it much better than the expensive systems I see in too many craft room tours. I want to keep my storage of supplies visually interesting (mostly out of sight), and looking just as curated as my supplies are. But purging needs to happen first. wow, I'm feeling overwhelmed and its not even my stuff, I started card making about 2 years ago and have a lot of craft stamps and die-cuts and paper already but I do not want to let it get out of control so watching videos like this help me to see what I don't want to end up accumulating, its a great lesson in self-discipline, so thank you for sharing.

Thank you, today I decided I needed to sort my craft room, like you I bought things that I thought I would use and never have. I mainly do embroidery, slow stitching, cards, patchwork, quilting, stamping and journaling. In thought I "needed" every new craft item that came on the market including the rabbit hole they call die cutting, I have had tears over how much I have spent, it was so good to hear that so many of us crafters are like that, you have given me the strength to go and really sort through what I need and donate what I don't so someone else gets the benefit.x

You did a wonderful job Sher and I know your mom is proud of you. Your bedroom and your closet looks so pretty now.
My wonderful mother passed away almost 11 years ago and I just gave away her jewelry making supplies to a friend. It was hard to do , but I know my friend will enjoy making jewelry. 😥I was crying at the beginning of your video along with you it is hard to let go of the things that belong to our loved ones.
My mother-in-law was a China painter for 50 years she was an amazing artist, but we had to get rid of all her porcelain China that still wasn't painted on and China painting paints, brushes. My husband called up a China painting shop that teaches China painting and ask them if they wanted porcelain China and paints , they said yes. We donated thousands of dollars worth of China painting products and they're very excited to get it because they said if a person couldn't afford porcelain China or paints when taking their classes they would just give it to them. When we heard that it made us feel so good and we knew that's what his mom would have wanted🥰.
My sister and I used to do craft shows and we ended up with a ton of crafts and seasonal decorations so we called up 3 YMCA's and donated it to them, they have after school arts and crafts and summer camp. What they didn't want we gave to Salvation Army.
Now once again I need to tackle my own craft room and I have been staying out of the DT store for several months now😇.
Thanks for sharing Sher, so Happy for You.🌴❤🌴❤🌴😘

I just did the same thing and finished last week. I am lucky because my daughter is an art teacher with our local school system so I gave it all to her. She is going to keep a few things and use some in her class and share the rest with other art teachers she works with. They sometimes have to spend their own money for supplies so I am sure they are happy to use them. The things that were just stored in my closet will get some good use now.

My room is a mess with what I have collected lately and I need to sort it all out. When I finish the 17 t-shirts for our family Christmas I will get it started. I already did all 9 of the adults. I have the kids vinyl all cut and ready to press so only an hour or so to finish.

A job well done. This is something I, too, need to do. It's odd the attachment we have to "things". You took huge steps towards purging. I think it's lovely that you carefully chose recipients for things. I love that you bagged up a sampling of stamps and supplies to give to people who will enjoy using them. I agree that your mom would be delighted knowing her things are being enjoyed rather than just "kept". This was inspiring. Thank you for sharing your purging journey!

You did a great job, super idea of donating the stamps. We need to think of collecting craft supplies and actual crafting as two different hobbies. That is where the hoarding takes over, if you don't use it why keep it? I have found getting rid of packaging helps. All of my ribbons and laces were taken off the spools and wound around cards; they filed nicely in a small drawer instead of a big tote full.

I did that with my whole house before we downsized. It was tough as first to get rid of anything sentimental BUT the more I worked through the easier it became and I have to say the feeling I had once I had done one section at a time propelled me to keep going! Now my house is perfect. I can keep up with everything that I have and am very concious about what I bring into the home. It has to be something I absolutely love or it just doesn't make the cut. Congrats. Its tough tough work. So proud of you!!!!

Hi. This Jude from the uk. I have recently been diagnosed with a cronic condition which is potentially terminal, I have made the decision with a friends help to sort my craft room and sell on/donate most of my crafting supplies and fabric. As we go through things we try to imagine what if any new or old crafts I may be able to do. It is very sad but also relieving to let things go.
I like the thought that someone else will be able to create lovely things.
It is taking a very long time as I have to take lots of rests.
Good luck with your craft room. Be strong. Regards Jude x

I've been doing the same thing. I'm on week two. It's exhausting mentally and physically, but I'm determined to get this done. I've so far taken 4 loads to charity. Yes, it's hard, but I've determined the memories are just that "memories". I don't need the physical stuff to have my memory, it just weighs me down. I'm starting to feel so relieved. The socks could be donated to a nursing home or alzhiemers center. I sent a bunch and they were so appreciative. So happy your items will be used by children. What fun they will have.
