Perfect timing, I really needed to see this right now. My therapist is helping me with my hoarding issues, and I have a shed full of fabric, and my second bedroom is half full. If my daughter would come to visit, there would be no room for her to sleep, and that was one of the main reasons why I wanted a 2 bedroom apartment.

Keep it Simple. Example: I have 5 book shelves. The only books I keep are ones that fit into these shelves. I only keep books by my favorite authors. I limit the number of authors I collect to 3. The other books are one-offs. I keep open areas for bookends and collectibles or knick knacks.
If I buy a new book I must have space for that book on the shelf or I have to get rid of a book in order for the new book to remain. I donate my old books to the library or other organizations so that other people can enjoy them, too. I see it as a gift to others to donate my well loved and no longer needed book. If I have a need for sentiments I can take a picture of that item so I have it to look back on. I can also make notes aboit a book that I have read, why I liked it, what inspired me, etc. These things help me to love my things and not become a hoarder like my mom was. I love books. I love stuff. All kinds of stuff!! I could collect a million things but I choose not to so that I can enjoy what I currently have and just live day to day life without having too much to overwhelm me. I always seem to have things to donate and that's okay. New comes in and old stuff goes out. It's the way of life. And we have to accept that. Also, by not collecting all the things you can enjoy other people's homes and their collections. The internet is now a great resource for learning and reading everything!! Books on Kindle can keep you from creating a hoard or being bombarded by a hoard. You just have to make the decision to say I can let go. I can let go because I'm not going to be here forever and as my time is limited I should enjoy all that I have while I'm here. The rest of what I don't use can go to someone who can use it. I would like my items to remain in good condition until it is passed along to someone else. So I have to be able to keep my things and my spaces clean and maintained. I will not neglect my family, my responsibilities, my own life for the sake of my stuff. I can let go because I refuse to have so many things that overwhelm my family after I pass away. I can let go because when I look at my things they make me happy. I can let go because I want my family and friends to look at my things and it brings them happiness peace and fond memories. And if it does none of these things.... It has to leave. And I say good bye. 👋 I make sure the item leaves my home within 3 days. If you set a time limit you will find it helps you to stay on task and focused. And most importantly....If you need help ASK SOMEONE. 💜🙏💖

I think the big difference is in how they are handled. On Hoarders, firstly they're in it for the ratings, and drama sells. They also don't deal with the trauma factor of why they've become hoarders, they just show up and start throwing things away, of course that's going to stress someone out. They also do it all in just 3 days, where here, they help the person to work through a long process. Much less traumatizing.

If they brought in a better staff, like the competition (?) who has Dr. Stelios Kiosses and Zoe and I forgot the other woman’s name.. so sorry..
they’re clearly more patient, more experienced and much more compassionate. And Dr. Kiosses makes me feel that he actually managed to move the needle and the hoarders are equipped with the tools to help themselves.
Whereas here, Curtis usually undersells their valuable stuff and it’s clear that he’s on a deadline to find something and sell it, so he takes things the hoarders don’t want to sell and gets very little money for it - but oh! We need it for the show…

I really appriciate the help the hoarders get in UK compared to US. In UK the people are kind, warm, respectful, and sell some items. In US the helpers and the hoarders and their families are more aggressive. I think that’s a cultural thing. And the aggressiveness and the stress and rush seems not be helpful for the cause either. The end result is good in both continents. 🇸🇪
