In The Valley - Lyrics
My grandfather went down with the Montevideo
The rising sun sent him floating to his rest
And his wife fled south to Sydney seeking out safe harbour
A North Shore matron she became with some paying guests
My father went down with the curse of big cities
Traffic tolls and deadlines took him to his peace
Now Bob Dyer glued us to our seats
And lawns were always Victa neat
Whilst Menzies fawned at royal fleet do you remember?
I'm sure you remember
In the valley I walk, I took some comfort there
In the valley I walk, cold comfort I can hear you talk
In the valley I walk, who will take me there?
When my mother went down it was a stiff arm from Hades
Life surprises and tears you like the southerly
She always welcomed the spring always welcomed the stranger
I don't see too many around like this
Oh no, not many like this
In the valley I walk - who will take me there
In the valley I walk - cold comfort I can hear you talk
In the valley I walk - I took some comfort there
In the valley I walk - oh rough justice I hear you talk
In the valley I walk - I meet my watershed
To meet my watershed
I meet my watershed
To meet my watershed
I hope virtue brings it's own reward
And I hope the pen is mightier than any sword
I hope the kids will take it slow
I hope my country claims it's own
In the valley I walk - I cried yes I cried I was down then I crawled
Mercy's arms all around me when I was down there
In the valley I walk - do you read me they can hear me in the valley

For those not aware, this song is actually based on truth as the grandfather of lead singer Peter Garrett really did die in the sinking of the Montevideo Maru while he was a Japanese POW in WWII.
And prayers to those on that ship, was finally rediscovered in April 2023. So hopefully Peter and others now have some closure on their losses.
Thanks, I didn't know that.
My Grandad died on the Montevideo leaving a wife and 3 kids behind. Thanks Pete.
Peter is a beautiful human being.
everyone is special in their own way in God.
I got front row tickets for Montreal show this morning and I am so happy... the Oils changed my life and I Followed through to make a difference in this messed up world..... so excited to see them...
👍
This is a most beautiful ballad that I have just rediscovered. It is also a wonderful poem about one's parents and grandparents. I can place every word here - it speaks so perfectly to my own recollections and experiences of my family elders.
And the chorus is clearly around the 23rd psalm - I'm not really religious but it is just bloody perfect.
Loves the Oils forever.

I HAVE TO ADMIT THIS IS MY FAVORITE BAND FROM AUSTRALIA, OUT OF ALL THE OTHER ONES! I JUST LOVE THEIR MUSIC, PERIOD.
The line about the mother who always welcomes the spring and a stranger seems to get me in the old cockles every time.
Sad to hear about bones today - I met him very briefly at Manchester airport the last time they played the u.k. r.i.p.
One of the best songs ever written - its simplicity is its soul
when i pass i want this song to play at my wake!! Midnight Oil a band that never sold out !
Their concerts did...
@@fransbuijs808 I swear I heard the cymbal crash then 😂
I cry every time I hear this song. It touches my soul deeply!!!
Me too mate
This video makes me cry for showing the simple things of life, that are the most important!
One of my two favorite bands that still played during my teens and 20's that I never got to see live...the other was Big Country. I hope they reunite and tour the US
Steeltowner hope you caught them last year
this song confirms that Midnight Oil is simply one of the most talented artists ever. There is no arguing about the incredible musical talent of this band. And the passion and emotion in every song, well there is pretty much no comparison. So sad that this band will always be known for only one song...
shearwaterblue one song...what a load of crap...they have many, many well known songs!!!
248 songs,mate
Great song Indeed!
I had about as much chance to see them live as...
I would've had better chance of striking genuine oil. Still...will always love them.
Great band.. Love to see them live again.
Bands like that should never end.
Lost my mom this year. A stiff arm for sure. Thanks Oils for this awesome song.
Chet Nakada The "stiff arm from Hades" lyric was an intensely personal, autobiographical lyric from Peter Garrett given his mother died in a house fire. I think he was studying at uni at the time. :-(
My great great grandfather went down on the Montevideo Maru, (Leslie Pattle) this song brings it all to bear
Takes me back to my youth. Loved the oils .I reckon I've seen midnight oil at least 30 times live.
Essa música uma mistura de sentimentos e uma nostalgia.... Eu ouvia quando era adolescente.... Hoje com 43 anos coloco bem alto e saio dançando feito louca igual a Peter Garret... Amo essa música... Peter sempre te amei....
their best song, hands down..
One of their greatest songs. A rare very sentimental one from the Oils which, as others have said, brings a tear to the eye!
The live version of this song is awesome on the album The Real Thing.
he cried in the mtv unplugged version
Them little kiddies, they are our future.
Sounds as beautiful and relevant, maybe even more, to me as the day I first heard it years ago.
How can this video not make you feel good?
The lyrics are about loss of loved ones but the visuals are about love for family and community.
This song out of all the Oils' many tunes just makes me cry every time with both sadness and joy.
Loves these blokes forever, lucky to have seen them live many times - last ever in Sydney a couple of months ago.
Bless 'em forever
my grand uncle Albert Carr was also lost on the Montevideo Maru, had no idea about this song and found a link on wikipedia!
mschyf58 wow I have to learn about this
love the names. i want to write like this even while in the valley.
My great uncle was also on this boat. After they took Rabaul, he was stationed at the hospital.
I’ve often wondered if any other descendants were interested. His enlistment and subsequent disappearance and death rocked our family, so much so the ripples are seen today 😩😭❤️🇦🇺
Am overwhelmed
Que música linda, dentre tantas outras deles... Amo essa banda! ❤
Love this Song!
Amazing song, Amazing video, one of the greatest rock band.
i love the Oils
My favourite Oils song, and one of my favourite songs full stop. Truly personal and breathtaking!
I simply love this band!
Thank you
God wants for us to live more abundantly. prosper!
I like how this song is about SS Montevideo Maru and I heard that Peter Garretts (The Singer) Grandfather was in that ship. Amazing!
My great uncle was also 👍🏻🇦🇺❤️

Belle pièce.

Such an underrated song.
I love this song...
I've always wanted to visit Australia.
There one of the most talented artist when they have the right frame of mind. I guess you can say like all of us without the music part though
Best concert ever.
@Spirit0f I once saw midnight oil at a concert in California when I was 4. I wish they re-unite to make more awesome songs with their talent.
The MTV unplugged gig did true justice to this great Aussie song. Check it out for a real buzz.
I remember washing machines like that. Can't help but remember. Got a finger caught in the wringer when I was 6 years old in 1959. Still can see the scar. Took me to the hospital for an overnight. Was given a quart of Coke. They didn't give it back to me the next day when I was to go home. Dang!
una muy buena banda australiana
Lovely! :D
Good slow rock song
now the Montevideo's wreck has been found.
LWFG!
Pete Garrett, quit politics and start singing again with your one of a kind band...I miss you and your music, you ol' bean pole you!
It's happening brother........2017...... YES!
He can do both just keep focus on the prize.
So glad they are coming back together.
The world needs them bad right now.
President Trump > Pete Garrett
Hey, it's not nice to make fun of Trump's weight like that.
You can't take politics out of the oils--in any era.

Not the correct lyrics. Listen to the song.
His mother died in a house fire :(
New CD comes on 2th november, it comes with 36 song of their career, and T-shirt!
Who will take me there! as an exclamation not a question.
Música linda
idolos
Well in America brother cause they are pretty big in South America and couple places in Europe and obviously all over Down Under.
"the curse of big cities"
According to Shakespeare blessing of Hamlets.
Help me Peter, should I give it back?
Goodbye Bones :-(
Is that Virgen de Guadalupe down there in Australia ?
I used to think she was known in México only

@tetrischemistt You're thinking about Crowded House... Rob Hirst the Midnight Oil dummer is well and truly alive
Quem veio aqui por conta do navio encontrado dá um like!
La letra al comienzo, nombra a Montevideo, alguien sabe traducirla?

Life was simpler
I'm old
@vaikasas17 Never lost my interest in the Oil mate!
@mikeellerbeck1 Yeah I know, sickening ain't it? There's no accounting for taste sometimes. If it makes you feel better there's like 400k on the Truganini video I believe.
And I knew I saw Rob's Rickenbacker on the New York, New York video! He was trying to go incognito on it but the guitar's a dead giveaway. Love it!
I lilr
Rob Hurst
have i already stated.... dingo ate muh baby
@Steeltowner but the drummer killed himself =[
still he is alive somewhere.
Love this song. But the lead singer looks like he could be an extra in a zombie movie.
Donald Badowski Peter Garrett studied to become a lawyer before committing to the Oils and later become a Federal Minister in the Australian government. As for his musical career, watching him perform live was quite an experience- an amazing front man!
