Thanks Jeff, I feel honored to be mentioned here. I will have to show this to my wife who thinks that I am a schizophrenic madman when I explain my watch neuroticisms to her. You touched on an interesting concept when you mentioned that the way you bond with your watch matters. I have been doing a lot of kayak fishing lately, and one day while I was out on the water holding my paddle, I looked down at my Sinn U50 that I was wearing on an army green nato strap, and it almost stopped my heart. The Golden late afternoon sunlight, the flat black dial with the quirky lego hands and the pops of red and white made me fall in love. I really do believe that it was the singularity, the bonding moment. I will forever associate this watch with being on a kayak at sunset now.

The GOAT has mentioned you, though are blessed by his majesty the Oracle the chosen one. May your Sinn U50 fulfill your dreams and deepest watch desires. I am currently entangled with a PAM176 that has ruined my desire to add any more biscuits. cheers

Holy crab crap, a "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" reference. Fanfreakingtastic. Just an amazing album.
Came for the watch talk, stayed for the Genesis and Stoicism references.

I’m about to start the process of selling my watches. I have slowly been loving my quartz watches the most, because they demand the least of me and give me the most joy. Every time I wind my mechanical watch only for it to stop working a few days later, I start to feel foolish for getting into such a demanding relationship with an object. I love the way many of them look but it’s not enough any more. I am about to get married and start a family, and the money is going toward financial freedom that I am working hard for. My quartz duro costed me 11 dollars, with an aftermarket bracelet that also was 11 dollars. A 22 dollar watch has given me more confidence and self assurance than all of my much more expensive pieces that tell me I’m an excessive, indulgent fool. My quartz watches serve me and make me feel sensible and responsible.

To sum it up: when I wear my Seamaster, it tells me that I’m a fool who spent 4 figures to cosplay as James Bond. My duro is far from perfect, it’s a little chunky (who of us couldn’t lose a few pounds) but it tells me to accept myself as I am and to appreciate being sensible and frugal.

Sir, I have been watching your videos for years, but have never commented until now. Your wisdom and observational acuity is like no one else I know who's making vids. I enjoy them all, appreciate that you take the time to make them, and I glean learnings and/or thought provoking insights often from them. This one really gave me a bit of a breakthrough. Your perspective actually helped me understand myself a bit better.
It comes down to your previously stated "Watch Potency Principle". Which basically says that too many watches (or a new watch coming into the collection) dilutes the potency of the other watches in one's possession. I realize now that this factor is very applicable to me. And it is what undoubtedly motivates me to sell off watches for "no good reason." I've owned and tried hundreds and hundreds of watches, but never have had more than 5 or 6 at a time. And thanks to your prompting, sir, I have come to see that the "reason" (when there is no apparent reason) is that the dilution caused by the Watch Potency Principle unconsciously drives me to sell something off......in order to restore full potency to the watches that remain!
For example -- in the past year or so ......new Submariner comes in, Sea Dweller and Speedmaster get sold. Planet Ocean comes in, goes out four months later. Pelagos FXD comes in, and subsequently both the latest Aerospace and the BlancPain end up as catch & releases.
I do love that dopamine rush and eager anticipation of a new incoming watch. I love the exploration of this hobby and experiencing the learnings from a new piece. But -- if that new watch dilutes the potency of others, (or conversely, the others dilute the potency of the new one) there's a conflict -- and very often, something has to go.
A little explanation behind why I've never really allowed collection proliferation, and helps explain to myself why I have sold off some perfectly good watches that had nothing wrong with them or not even anything specific I could even call out as not liking about them.
Keep up the good work sir, and know that you are appreciated!

The 30 day principle hit hard...I now understand why I've sold like 20 watches in 5 years... they just weren't right, and after a few weeks / months, I realised the terrible truth.... and back on sale they went.....😅

I think this is a great point Jeff, so many people are obsessed with the hunt but never stop to smell the flowers. Until you put some mileage and memories into something, it never really feels yours. I however don't think 30 days is the end of the bake period, I think the period ends once the first scratch has been inflicted, and excepted

In the audiophile community, they have a debate around "burn in" which is the theory that speakers and headphones sound better have so many hours of use.
Some people swear by it, other people think it's a myth perpetuated by the companies because by the time the device has completed the burn-in hours... the return/money bacl period is over!

The “half baked” and “30 day” principles definitely resonate with me Jeff, providing a valuable insight into my inner watch collecting conflict. I frequently find myself being drawn to beautiful watches adorning copious high polish, however unsurprisingly once acquired they are rarely worn in the daily life of a dairy farmer. Instead their beauty withers away in the watch box while I form inseparable bonds with the brushed and bead-blasted utilitarian tool watches that perfectly suit my everyday life.

I believe it‘s true what you are saying. Sadly it keeps me from spending a lot of money on a grail watch. I got watches that I didn‘t like at first sight but that I now love, but I also received some that I really liked at first and now don‘t wear…and I can never really tell why. So buying a „grail“ feels like a gamble to me and I‘m hesitant. I‘m also not sure how much it‘s up to me to bond with the watch.

I am going to wear one of my watches for 30 days, starting now. Seems like quite a challenge, given how often I change watches.

I instantly bonded with my grail watch, I spent a year deciding if I want to get it. I got it in person, and loved it, but my attitude towards it had it's ebbs and flows in a year of ownership, however the watch always end up moving towards higher and higher regard from me. I intend to keep in my possession for the remainder of my life.
The rest of my 15+ watches, are not the pieces I'm "bonded" with, I have about 4 - 5 watches that I regularly rotate mainly to preserve my grail from excessive wear and tear, the remaining are sentimental pieces that I don't intend on wearing, they include; first watch I ever bought with my money, a bunch of gifted watches and family inherited vintage pieces. I call them my Box O'Junk.
So to your point, I maintain my sanity only because I do have "only" 5 - 6 watches that I actually wear.

I stalked my Montblanc/Minerva 106166 for over a year before coming across one by luck and pulling the trigger. I’d never spend that much money on a watch I wasn’t obsessed with for less than a year

Great content as always, I’ve had that experience with guitars. I bought a new one and idealize it in my mind just to find it feels weird in my hands, the positioning in the body, balance, etc. But you have to get to know it of course, specially when jumping up tiers, some higher end guitars are just more unforgiving of sloppy playing and that kind of things.

24 watches? Thst is crazy. Oh wait, I just counted mine. I have 27. 😊. I do completely agee with you. It is hard to bond with a watch when you have so many. I might wear one for 3 or 4 days straight and that is not enough time to bond. Sometimes I feel bad because I have a watch that I loved the first few days I owned it but the love dissipated with time. By the way, aside from EBay, where are good places to sell my watches?
