    Mythbuster did an epic series of this tests many years ago. Tailgate up, down, and removed. Most efficient in order: up, removed, down. Tailgate up creates a vortex bubble in the bed which pushes passing air over the truck most efficiently.

      The benefit should be visible with a fastback shaped like cover like we can see in some pickups like the 2010 Navara.
      I do not know if anything exists for this one tho

    Bjørn was very smart to repeat the tailgate up test. This “capping run” is needed to prevent wrong conclusions due to test-to-test variation due to uncontrolled variables. The results show the importance of this step. I appreciate Bjørn’s efforts to conduct all of his tests in a scientific manner to get the most accurate and meaningful results.

    You have to clode the tailgate to save energy, that limits zair flow going into the tail, mythbusters made a great videos explaining and measuring it

    I see that many people agree that counter-intuively the tailgate makes very little difference..
    But if it did, wouldn't you be as likely to see it in the time of the runs or the satellite speed at given points on the run since the power is limited? Wouldn't reduced air resistance show up as slightly faster speed?

  • @pieterr9721

    The tailgate can be changed for a net, those are (were?) on sale for ICE pick-up trucks. I used one on my ICE Toyota Hi-lux in the 90's, and it worked!

  • @Gnubbelhurz
    @Gnubbelhurz 9 месяцев назад +3

    Closed is better as during driving an rotating air tube is been build behind the cabin. The consumption is compared to having a roof while without there is a lot of air disturbance. I have seen a science documentation that deals with that question some years ago.

    • @richard--s
      @richard--s 9 месяцев назад

      and he tested it and there was no difference that could be measured.

    • @Gnubbelhurz
      @Gnubbelhurz 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@richard--sthat's what he said, based on the shown number the closed tailgate has shown slightly better consumptions.
      And to be clear also in the documentation I have seen it was not that by open or closing it feels like exchanging the car. But their tests have been a bit more extensive. Also using windchannels to identify what is going on.

    I guess that the cabin is making vortex. Thats why there is no difference here.
    And maybe its the reason why Cybertruck has cover from the top of the cabin to the tail.
    It should be tested with cybertruck !
