According to Volvo’s website, the cars boot capacity is 318 litres (more than 500 litres less than Model Y as its 854 litres). So doubt if EX30 is a Model Y killer as they both are quite different and not in the same league.
Model Y is a much bigger car than the Volvo so they should not be compared. But the boot of a Model Y is NOT 854 litres, Tesla cheated on this figure big time! I doubt its much more than about 550l in reality.
If this is the start of the new Volvo range, it’s 60 and 90 versions are going to blow up the market. Lots of exciting talk about it here in China which is a hard to compete in. The young buyers are loving the whole package that is a major factor behind why many are now moving away from other manufacturers. Well done Volvo/Geely. Safe and now cool is on point.
Volvo has been underrated for decades here in the US. I would argue they've made better cars in all categories than the other brands here for about 20 years.
Since Volvo started changing their style years ago they just keep getting better and better and this one looks amazing. It is exactly what is needed as well, a high performance, good range, ethical (as in recycled to maybe offset the batteries), and affordable EV. Well done Volvo!
Volvo have knocked this out of the park! I was considering the new Smart #1 for my next car but this is cheaper and even nicer! Can't believe how cheap this is!
It's "inexpensive" (I hate using the word "cheap" as that implies something undesirably low cost in feel and appearance. Nor do I like "cheaper" which means even more cheap than something already cheap. We should use the term "lower cost" or "inexpensive" or "relatively inexpensive," not "cheap." End of lecture, LOL.
Congratulations on transitioning from one Chinese product to another. The core of these two cars is the intelligent battery control system developed in China
At that time, there were only two electric vehicles in the world. One is electric cars in China. The other is other. At present, it seems that other need to be refueled.
Tesla Model Y will be best selling car this year. It’s one thing to make an amazing car, it’s another to produce at huge scale and at a profit. I say good luck to Volvo but they are not going to kill Tesla anytime soon.
This has only just come out, a little unfair to compare to the Tesla model Y. Tesla's don't look good and look dated after a few years. The competition looks better and in most countries that don't receive a subsidy it's 10k cheaper albeit with 70 miles of less range.
@@lukezi3952 I think the Model 3 has a generic look that hasn't aged well. The inside isn't great either. A toy looking steering wheel and quite bland. Compare that to European and Japanese brands which look far more exciting inside and out.
Wow, this is very interesting. While there are a few things I'd like to see different like some actual buttons for some basic controls (like a volume knob and some quick access to HVAC, heated seats, etc), overall, this is a very compelling offer. While it's on the small size, it's all the size I need and makes it easier to fit in the garage as well as parking, etc. We'll have to wait and see how the pricing looks when it is out here (Canada), but it looks to be a winner so far.
Most likely the nearest you can come to the Volvo 300 series in a more modern version. Just as I mentioned the 300 series, the EX30 also kind of have the same look about it as the 300 series.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I had a Tesla Model Y on order, after waiting over a yr with no answer of when I would get a car I cancelled. Then looked at the Polestar and the XC40 Electric. They were demanding $70,000 for the XC40!!! Liked the Polestar but was waiting to see what else was coming. This seems to check all my boxes. Can't wait to get myself on a pre-order list. Good work Volvo!
@@mikecounsell Problem is build solidity and ride aren't. Tesla's are OK. They're tech car but as a Volvo owner, they're not for me. They need to improve on design, build solidity, ride comfort in the 3 and Y (it's very good in the S).
It is, but if you want all the bells and whistles you end up at about the same price as that if the model y, if not more. Add to that at 10 months waiting time even if you ordered tonight
@Gareth Dix So, you were going to upgrade to a larger vehicle, presumably because...... You wanted the space? Then you decide a smaller vehicle is good? Smh
Love it! Well packaged, good performance, sustainable materials and pricing not too steep. Will top speed be limited to 180 kph (112 mph) as with other Volvo cars? If yes, it's the quickest not the fastest Volvo yet.
@Ce0ammer limited for safety reasons, making it a perfect car for parents to buy their children. Most highways have speed limits anyway, so you can't legally drive at 180kph or above in Europe except on some sections of the autobahn.
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 unfortunately very true...I just conigured the topspec "Ultra" with just €1,4k trailer hitch as an extra and it's almost exactly at 50k euros. Even with EVs below €57k being exempt from taxes in this EU country, the configuration is basically as a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Not sure what the benefit of the Volvo would be compared to a Model 3.
Can they build to scale…like 100k per year or more? Can they make it profitable? How’s the software and do I have to go through a dealer to get my car or can I order it online?
Let's be real, it won't kill the Tesla Model Y. Certainly will be popular, but it's quite a mountain to climb to out-sell the Y. Smaller boot, range is almost equiv to a Model Y RWD Standard and similar price (£41k in the UK for entry spec Model Y). Model Y AWD LR currently available at £47k with a range of 331 miles.
I think you really made a lot of good points there. The model y is so brilliantly packaged. I am in awe of how much cargo capacity it is able to hold. I have a ford mustang Mach e and a Tesla Y and the tesla seems to have double the space inside despite the cars having similar exterior dimensions. If I had to sell one of them I would probably sell the ford because it’s too cramped inside and I can’t use teslas brilliant charging network (yet…I know that’s coming soon)
Quite a catchy title, given the vast difference in size and space. I just got a Model Y and my family would never fit in the Volvo, despite the great looks and powertrains.
Usually Carwow is very good at these comparisons, but this time the comparison to Tesla Model Y is completely ridiculous. Volvo is like half the size of Model Y and even way smaller than a Model 3. So comparing the price and performance to Model Y is just stupid and useless since they battle in different leagues. This Volvo will be amazing and fills a gap where there is not really a good car at the moment: medium size hatchback with good technology and performance.
Model Y killer! 😂😂😂 I love it! I don't doubt Volvo's extraordinary abilities and foresight, but when will they be ramping production up to model Y numbers? You know; the best selling car in the world? You know the best part? The model Y and all of it's "killers" have killed ICE! 😭😭😭 Job done 👍
What a great little car. I have driven Tesla Model 3 multiple times and I think having a single, high quality screen is still better than having 2 avrage ones. I think most people look more at the navigation than at the cluster anyway. The only problem I see is that EX30 will be too small for most people. It is much smaller in the back than XC40: ruclips.net/video/igRDY0u_4hE/видео.html vs ruclips.net/video/wWldGvketwM/видео.html so this is an option for people who only have kids in the back. Can wait to see the next generation of C40/XC40/EX40 tho, this tech is sick!
One thing i don't get when reviewers say: "Tesla Y Killer". I didn't buy it because its the best car. I bought it to support the greatest mind of the century. Pretty much the only person who is giving it all for the collective, and not to his own pocket. As long as I can afford it, i will pay double value so it goes to him than half the cost and it'll go to companies who are looking to only conquer.
The performance one has me really excited too, but we will have to see how it performs in terms of steering, chasis, suspension, brakes, etc. Ideally it would have a Polestar-like preparation, but we will see.
Great looking with lots of performance and well equipped but way too short (166.7") to take on the Model Y (187"). Even 7" shorter than my wife's old GLA250 which was already too small!
I’m reacting to the title here. The new Volvo only has 318liters of baggage space. It might be fast but performance is not everything practicality is very important for a lot of us. I don’t have a Tesla Y. But to call it a Tesla Y killer is a bit misleading because it’s more hitting on Volkswagen ID 3. Don’t call anything the “killer”. I grew up with: The ipod killer, this is the mew ipod killer, this will certainly kill the ipod, I promise this is an iPod killer.
It’s a lovely design but it’s way smaller than most of the competitors you’re highlighting… while it’s very quick in size it’s more a competitor for the Jeep Avenger! I’m confused but I want one!!
I just took delivery of a Tesla Model Y Long Range. I got all-wheel drive, far more range than offered by the EX30, and a load of features. My Tesla can charge at the rate of 250 KW, compared to the EX30, which will charge at 153KW. The price of the Model Y was under US $51,000. The U.S. government will also provide me a tax credit of $7500, because the vehicle and the battery pack were both manufactured in the U.S., so my net cost is less than $43,500. In the U.S, the much smaller, Chinese-made, EX30 will not be competitive with the Model Y.
@@bob-qi4nr Actually, I will simply be paying less federal income tax this year. Let's just say that, for the 2023 tax year, the U.S. government will not take from me the tax incentives that encourage exploration and extraction of oil.

Thanks for a great video. But I prefer BYD ... more technology and a great well-functioning infotainment system. And they have a soft, lovely driving sensation. BYD is inventive with its Blade battery, and so they cost less. But the volvo is nicely drawn equivalent with the upcoming Zeeker X.
The most important performance figure for me is the range. If this gets close to 300 miles, that's not bad... but I still won't buy an EV until the car puts out a 500 mile range. 300 mile range in the USA just isn't enough, not when you're traveling to see family and friends or driving to the beach or mountains.
And how often do you.actually drive 500 miles without a break? And if you do, you shouldn't. I (fairly) habitually drive over 1000 miles with my wife, and we swap over every 2 hours. However, we almost never swap over without doing something like having a cup of coffee, going to the toilet or just stretching our legs. That gives plenty of time for a battery top up. The idiots who keep on about "I'll never have an EV until it has blah blah blah range" simply demonstrate that they are incapable of sufficient self awareness to understand why they really do (or maybe should do) in their cars. In any case, I expect that within a couple of years, with CATL's Condensed Matter batteries or similar, 500+ mile ranges and more are going to be normal. And yes, CATL go into production with the CM batteries this year. And other companies are not far behind.
@@davidcolin6519 it’s not the 500 miles without stopping (but I do drive 360 miles without stopping twice a week). It’s the having to stop to recharge and wait 10 to 30 minutes. There are recharging stations around, but not that many. Plus, recharging ain’t that cheap. In some cases it’s more expensive than gas. There’s lots of issues here… it’s more than just range. Aptera have the right idea using solar panels.

According to Volvo’s website, the cars boot capacity is 318 litres (more than 500 litres less than Model Y as its 854 litres). So doubt if EX30 is a Model Y killer as they both are quite different and not in the same league.
Exactly. It's a worse copy of a model Y with bad software.
Model Y is a much bigger car than the Volvo so they should not be compared. But the boot of a Model Y is NOT 854 litres, Tesla cheated on this figure big time! I doubt its much more than about 550l in reality.
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 You don't know the software and to call this a copy of a model y is ridiculous.
Even a model 3 is bigger with 425 litres. Also it can seat 3 people in the rear with all 3 rear seats heated and has more leg room.
The marketing that Volvo gave to his car is just impressive, congrats to them! Although it looks so fresh and stylish, I'll definitely buy one 😊
Range and size are not Model Y level. I’ve never had understood this channel’s distaste for the Y.
Volvo has been underrated for decades here in the US. I would argue they've made better cars in all categories than the other brands here for about 20 years.
Its a shame Volvo are owned by the Chinese.
STUPID 😂😂😂
Since Volvo started changing their style years ago they just keep getting better and better and this one looks amazing. It is exactly what is needed as well, a high performance, good range, ethical (as in recycled to maybe offset the batteries), and affordable EV. Well done Volvo!
The batteries will be 95% recyclable too......
VOLVO IS CHINESE CRAPOLA!!!!
@@benjaminsmith2287 or we could call a spade a spade 🤷🏼♂️
Congratulations on transitioning from one Chinese product to another. The core of these two cars is the intelligent battery control system developed in China
@@llllll-mp1zr I'm aware of the shared parts, doesn't make any difference to my view of the vehicles.

VOLVO does always has a New cars evertime make old and new
Tesla Model Y will be best selling car this year.
@@GK-qc5ryteslas dont look dated at all. Even the first model S's that came out 10 years ago still look brand new.
I think it would be OK for me too because I'm almost always alone in my car and we have an SUV for the family. But still, at this price is small
Loving this car. Volvo has mastered the interior game for some time, but this one looks the business!!😊
Looks like a KIA🤮
When you say looks the business, you mean its got all the excitement of an office desk with an ipad stuck to it?
@@czesaw597 awful take. it doesnt look like a KIA in any way. What model are you reference to?

ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I had a Tesla Model Y on order, after waiting over a yr with no answer of when I would get a car I cancelled. Then looked at the Polestar and the XC40 Electric. They were demanding $70,000 for the XC40!!! Liked the Polestar but was waiting to see what else was coming. This seems to check all my boxes. Can't wait to get myself on a pre-order list. Good work Volvo!
when the pricing is released, brace for impact
@@joaopedrosilva8883 the price maybe $75.000.
Buy a used MY or S from Tesla for a great price ?? Service is excellent. Charging excellent. Navigation and software excellent. Performance excellent.
This is significantly smaller than the Model Y. The ex40 is even smaller than the Y.
@@mikecounsell Problem is build solidity and ride aren't. Tesla's are OK. They're tech car but as a Volvo owner, they're not for me. They need to improve on design, build solidity, ride comfort in the 3 and Y (it's very good in the S).
What makes someone wake up and say... I think I want a Geely Volvo? The 35k price doesn't beat a Tesla Model 3 or Y. 😂😂😂
I love my Volvo C40 Recharge. I placed a reservation for the new EX30 the first day they were offered. I can't wait to get it!

I was about to upgrade my model 3 to a model Y… but now (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) that Volvo is ridiculously good looking
It is, but if you want all the bells and whistles you end up at about the same price as that if the model y, if not more. Add to that at 10 months waiting time even if you ordered tonight
And way inferior software...which will be the most important thing in a car soon...
And a way smaller vehicle.
@Gareth Dix
So, you were going to upgrade to a larger vehicle, presumably because...... You wanted the space?
Then you decide a smaller vehicle is good?

@@AtariLegend also the driver assist in the XC90 came out really poor in tests. I’m not sure how much it has improved.
Looks nice! Not a Model Y killer though.. how many can they make? Take the question
How many charges compared to LiPo4? Battery Warranty?
Love it! Well packaged, good performance, sustainable materials and pricing not too steep. Will top speed be limited to 180 kph (112 mph) as with other Volvo cars? If yes, it's the quickest not the fastest Volvo yet.
Will be limited
Just like the build quality the top speed is limited.
@Ce0ammer limited for safety reasons, making it a perfect car for parents to buy their children. Most highways have speed limits anyway, so you can't legally drive at 180kph or above in Europe except on some sections of the autobahn.
I have a feeling it's gonna be a success. They will sell very well with that price tag.
Don't get fooled. At the small price tag you have 340km of range.
LOL its VW ID3 all over again, 30k Euro car is like 45-50k lol
@@whynotstartusingyourbrain8726 unfortunately very true...I just conigured the topspec "Ultra" with just €1,4k trailer hitch as an extra and it's almost exactly at 50k euros.
Even with EVs below €57k being exempt from taxes in this EU country, the configuration is basically as a Tesla Model 3 Long Range. Not sure what the benefit of the Volvo would be compared to a Model 3.
@@bastianm5478 there is non.
Nailed it. Volvo are not going to be able to make enough of these to fulfil demand...
How much did Volvo pay for this ad? Lost my respect Matt.
If I had to sell one of them I would probably sell the ford because it’s too cramped inside and I can’t use teslas brilliant charging network (yet…I know that’s coming soon)
absolutely love the looks & performance of it
Bar of soap
Almost choked to death 😂😂😂
Quite a catchy title, given the vast difference in size and space. I just got a Model Y and my family would never fit in the Volvo, despite the great looks and powertrains.
Impressive, but it is not yet on the market - let's see what the price is when it is actually here.
Volvo makes some amazing cars
Great price, which is weird to say about cars nowadays
Usually Carwow is very good at these comparisons, but this time the comparison to Tesla Model Y is completely ridiculous. Volvo is like half the size of Model Y and even way smaller than a Model 3. So comparing the price and performance to Model Y is just stupid and useless since they battle in different leagues.
This Volvo will be amazing and fills a gap where there is not really a good car at the moment: medium size hatchback with good technology and performance.
Agree. I'd compare it to the Jeep Avenger instead of Model Y.
Nice car and great price but far smaller than the Y so it's a different car for a different market. It's main competition is the Kona, not the Y.
All volvo and polestar are killing it lately 😊
XC40 and XC40 Recharge. I'm not sure there will be an EX40. We'll see.
@@benjaminsmith2287 Probably time for a refresh for the XC40, which likely will be rebranded to EX40?
This the city-sized, stylish, (more) affordable EV I was waiting for. Kudos to Volvo!!
Volvo will have to make more than two of them for a start.
It actually looks decent too
Volvo always makes great looking car.
Yep. Even Wuling Motors also made great looking compact EV cars.
I placed my order for the twin motor performance this morning! Roll on next year when it comes
The performance one has me really excited too, but we will have to see how it performs in terms of steering, chasis, suspension, brakes, etc. Ideally it would have a Polestar-like preparation, but we will see.
At least they won't do a Tesla and fit brakes from an AMC Pacer.
It's a Smart #1 in different clothes. Check out its review.

Great looking with lots of performance and well equipped but way too short (166.7") to take on the Model Y (187"). Even 7" shorter than my wife's old GLA250 which was already too small!
I hope they come out with the specs and pricing for the EX30 Cross Country version soon! That's the one I'm most interested in.
I like it especially the Moss Yellow model but I wish the center screen is horizontal to watch movie with the speakers on!

NO...My tax dollars will provide you with $7500 to buy a stupid car.

BYD is inventive with its Blade battery, and so they cost less.
But the volvo is nicely drawn equivalent with the upcoming Zeeker X.
And I can't wait for you to review it!
