Who’s up for an electric SUV group test!
We’ve got our hands on the Audi Q4 e-tron, the Volvo C40 Recharge and the Tesla Model Y to see which is the best mid-range electric SUV you can buy in 2022.
Not only will Mat be comparing their looks on both the outside and inside, but he’ll be taking them for a drive, launching them to 60mph and taking a look at their power output & range to see which comes out on top.
When it comes to stats, they’re all relatively similar. We’ve got our hands on the range-topping Volvo and Audi, which put down 408hp & 299hp from their respective 75kWh & 77kWh battery packs. As for the Tesla, we’ve got the entry-level model here as it’s better matched to these two, with a 70kWh battery putting down 384hp.
In terms of price, the Audi has the cheapest entry-level price, at £43,000. The Volvo is next up at £47,000, and the Tesla costs the most at £55,000. But will the Audi come out on top? You’ll have to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

You do often get the opposite problem where the review car has every crazy expensive option ticked and people don't realise that you can get it with sensible options for way less. You really need the base price, the price of the most popular spec and the price of the max it out spec.

Audi was shortlisted for quite a long but the google car took my heart when compared to the audi user interface. As I am just starting my breakfast I can tell my phone/ google to warm up my car and off you go! As a scandinavian living near arctic circle one issue not very crucial in uk is framed door Windows Tesla does not have. Thank you, Mat. Excellent review, as usual.
Based on my research Tesla Performance has 500-550 HP, not 450HP. I've found dyno test that showed 520HP and a review from Italy showroom. The reviewer said Tesla rated Performance model in Italy at 550 HP.
The battery size should be 75kWh usable with around 83kWh total capacity for the latest models.
IMPO, the suspension tuning of Tesla Performance is great. It's a perfect balance between cornering performance and comfort.
I wish the steering would be more communitive to have a more direct feel to know what front tires are doing.

What was the psi of the tyres on the Tesla, I ask as mine was delivered with 48psi and reduced this to the 42psi stated on the door card and ride quality improved substantially. Also I have already done 6,000 I. The Model Y and I’m averaging around 280miles range (this is increasing at the moment with the warm weather as I actually got around 300miles with mostly motorway driving when it was over 20degrees), did you precondition the car before testing the range?

I have finally bit the bullet and wandered into the local Tesla sales operation, I can imagine a premium EV in my future as a family car, and recent carwow and RSEV videos have eased my concerns as a committed petrol head. We were only going to sit in the Model Y but ended up taking one out for a test drive. I was concerned re the hard / sporty ride comments however coming from a 2016 Focus RS (pre spring / damper revisions for UK market) just how bad could it be? If somebody is used to a long line of SUV ownership then I can imagine yes they might notice increased firmness but for me this is an improvement and much better complaints wise from the family. The current Model Y setup would tempt me into a more family friendly SUV style of vehicle, something much softer would not do so. I think I'm sold, though I may well try to hire a Model Y for a long weekend before committing.

Here in the states you can even get a Y with a tow hitch and 3rd row seats. We ordered ours in that configuration. I’ve put 8,000 trouble free miles on it so far and didn’t have any of the build quality issues that people talk about. I love the way how the Q4 looks. Hey CarWow, when you review EVs you ALWAYS have to mention charging time at HPC, form 10 to 80%, NOT peak charging power or AC charging time!!!!!!
For example, while both the Tesla and Audi can charge from 10 to 80% in less than 30min, the Volvo takes more than 45min! This really makes a difference when doing long trips

Fantastic and unbiased review Matt. Excellent. With regard to looks, and in particular the front of the vehicles, you are correct that looks are a personal opinion. But given that the single biggest cost of producing these cars is the battery pack, you would think that making an EV as slippery as possible would get you maximum value from you battery pack. So a Tesla gives you a grille-less design with a low coefficient of drag and therefore you get maximum efficiency and range from your battery pack. I cannot for the life of me understand why Audi and BMW have gone for these large flat closed grills that must act as a drag on the car and therefore use battery power to push them through the air. It is hurting these automakers as they are having to instal bigger battery packs than Tesla to go the same distance. Bigger battery means much bigger cost and they are already paying more per kWH than Tesla when purchasing them. This all flows to the consumer. You pay more to go less but you get a nice looking front (subjective).

The one thing you missed in the comparison is the reliability factor!
My Audi is the most unreliable car I have ever purchased and it’s supposed to be the flagship model! It’s been in the garage (Caffyns) for more hours than it’s been on the road. Which is why after 16 months of ownership and loosing £65k in depreciation I am getting rid of it and buying a model Y.
I love your road tests Matt, but it’s these little things (haha) that make all the difference. Like the 3 year warranty probably due to the unreliability, like the £25 per month connectivity charge compared to £10 for Tesla, like the 2 year servicing cost of £370 when Tesla has none and like the bl***y diabolical back up from Audi when you have continuous problems. @@RyanCowan you don’t have the Model Y yet? I think Europe recently got it. The Y is everywhere here too and it’s nice-looking. It was out of my budget because I think they were only selling the performance version when I ordered my 3.

@@justinm.8970 yeah fair enough ! Hopefully we get it here soon when the Shanghai factory ramps up again. Looks like we are getting the standard range Y thankfully, so might be able to afford it. Pricing got leaked and its only $4k more than the standard 3 ! I did a video on it a few weeks back on my channel and looks like lots of people are interested in buying one !

Wondering if the Model Y has the over the air performance upgrade that is available on the Model3? With that being around £1200 I'm wondering if it could possibly beat the Volvo on the 0-60 and still be over £4k cheaper...
(based on as tested prices of 55k verses 62k)

The Long Range Model Y does indeed have the "Acceleration Boost" option (at least in the US) for $2,000 USD. This reportedly drops the 0-60 MPH time from 4.8 sec to 4.2 sec.
