      My mother-in-law still thinks I'm a hardcore Star Wars fan, not knowing how I've turned away from Disney's BS Wars. She bought me the People Magazine TRoS issue as a stocking-stuffer this Christmas. So I flipped through it. The final pages of the rag had full page write ups on Disney's execs tied into the purchase of Lucasfilm. Does that tell you anything about how they think of themselves in the Star Wars universe? Egotistical ideologues to the max.

      Stimulator7 thats essentially what George had turned into by the time the prequels rolled around. We may rag on Lucas a bit, but this is honestly heartwarming. There’s something so pure about seeing him with his yellow sheets, fresh pencils, and not an idea in the world, as compared to the glossy exterior presented in the Disney “behind the scenes” features. I cannot wait for the three hour documentary to come out in 20 years which discusses what really happened in them. The honesty of the prequel documentaries really makes you understand that film production is a mess and it just fascinates to see how things are done.

      And I wish that for some things, they would've dared instead of playing it safe like with Star Trek Voyager or The Force Awakens and especially The Rise of Skywalker. I never hated a film but this was the first (and luckily so far only) time where I did.

      @robrorry2841 3 года назад +121

      @@boscopappas234 You don't seem to understand the narrative being established in that scene; it really has nothing to do with "positioning". In TPM, Obi-Wan does the move you are referencing to defeat Darth Maul and goes on to teach Anakin that move as well. In ROTS, Anakin, overcome with pride and arrogance at the time he is on Mustafar, foolishly decides to use that same move against Obi-Wan when they are fighting.
      It's a classic example of using your master's trick against him, but as it usually works elsewhere, here it backfires tremendously. And perhaps more so, it is a beautiful use of parallelism to showcase Anakin's fall. That fight isn't just a fight - otherwise Anakin, as you point out, would win it handily.

    • @boscopappas234
      @boscopappas234 3 года назад +4

      @@robrorry2841 Obi-Wan never taught Anakin that move. Not on screen at least. The placement of the dialogue during that point in the duel was ridiculous. If some fans prefer Lucas’ trilogy, that’s their preference. I don’t think anything in the prequels makes them better than the Disney sequels. All six films are immensely flawed. Rogue One didn’t have to further the Skywalker narrative and it’s all the better for it.

Meanwhile I'm pulling it off the shelf and reading it every 4 years, and he hasn't read it or remembered what he wrote in much longer? I disagree. Readers often focus on minor details which they think matter. It's like the knowledge that wins you a trivia quiz. The author would know a lot more, because the author knows the background of characters and their inner workings, a lot of stuff that isn't even mentioned in the books. So the author would know things that the reader cannot even know. Also, many readers have opinions and interpretations, which the author may prove incorrect. When readers and viewers care about something, they often like to think that they know what is happening. It is often a lot of guesswork though.@@sandal_thong8631

    Just goes to show you that love him or hate him, Lucas really did care about his movies. So much so that he puts years of pre-production into them. He effectively started working on it in 1994 and released Episode I in 1999. That's 5 years from start to finish. Then 3 years for the rest of the prequels. Disney turned into it into an assembly line hot potato, with no cohesive vision and throwing the script to any hungry director that had at least 1 bankable movie under their belt. Abrams (decent, though kind of Diet Spielberg), Johnson, Trevorrow (which became Abrams again). Too many cooks spoil the broth, not to mention the 2 year rushjob between films. IMO, there should have been 1 strong vision overseeing the sequel trilogy and less Disney shareholders wanting to induce labor to speed up what they though would be a moneymaking franchise that "dumbass sheep" fans would eat up anyway.

    Lucas is a genius, but he needs someone to rein in his ideas. That was why the OG trilogy was good: the editors took his footage and made it coherent for an audience. The biggest pitfall of the prequels is that no one told Lucus "No". His word was God and no one wanted to tell him "ya know, maybe that's not a good idea"

    • @Megrez-Alberich
      @Megrez-Alberich 2 года назад +4

      ANH was re-edited from scratch by Lucas himself after the piss-poor job done by John Jympson, the first editor. But there was so much to do in too little time that his wife Marcia came to the rescue, and then Richard Chew and Paul Hirsch were also hired to help finish the work on time. And the 3 of them edited the film exactly the way George asked them to. Marcia did make some changes in the pacing and she made some scenes flow more naturally, but Lucas still had the final say. In fact, he rejected some suggestions made by Marcia, who insisted the scene with Luke hanging around with Biggs and his friends on Tatooine at the beginning of the film should be kept. But George thought it would slow down the pacing and he believed Luke should be introduced later on in the story.
      Same thing with TESB and ROTS. He supervised everything and had the final say.
      Regarding the prequel movies, Lucas constantly sought for advice, especially from his good friends Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg, who didn't hesitate to tell him "no, George, this won't work. You should do it this way instead". Same thing with the actors. Christopher Lee is on record for flat out refusing to have his character beg for mercy, as he thought Dooku would rather die with dignity than beg for his life.
      Lucas initially didn't want to give Samuel L. Jackson a purple lightsaber because "well, lightsabers are green or blue for the Jedi, and red for the Sith. That's just how it is". But Jackson insisted, saying that Mace Windu was the highest ranking Jedi among the Order just after Yoda, so his lightsaber _should_ be a different color to reflect this status. Besides, purple being the result of mixing blue and red together, Jackson thought it would show that Mace Windu was a special kind of Jedi with some traits reminiscent of the Sith. And George admitted it actually made sense and he eventually relented and gave Jackson a purple lightsaber.

      @@Megrez-Alberichexactly! George has always had creative control in most of the visual medias of the franchise before he sold Lucasfilm, I get to understand I could be mistaken, that he even had brief argues with Irving and Richard, the directors of Episodes V and VI due to creative decisions, especially with Irving, and in the end he (George) was the one who ended up re-editing the original trilogy for the VHS, DVD and BLU-RAY formats.
      And what’s funny is how before giving Samuel L. Jackson his purple lightsaber George never intended to give them a meaning to the colours but after that he was practically forced to do it.

As I worked my way through the barrels of bonus materials on the 2nd DVD, I kept coming back to this short little clip. For me, it explored the journey every writer faces at the start of a new project. It really does all start with an idea, and how much life and work you give that idea depends on how far it goes. Regardless of how the prequels hold up today, I've always admired George Lucas from watching this clip - catching a glimpse at how it all started in his little writing cave with just his imagination and a pen and pencil to get started.

    I can't thank this man enough for making me a fan of Sci-Fi and for giving me the entirety of Star Wars. It's not just a world that me and many others are in love with, it's an idea and proof that we can create completely realised worlds with their own philosophy, way of life, themes etc, that can actually influence you in real life. For me the Jedi philosophy on life is the one of the best outlooks on life I have ever seen and I try to follow it myself. Non-attachment, unconditional compassion, peace of mind etc. are things we so often overlook or forget which leads to a lot of real anger, fear, hate and suffering in this world.
    His work also spawned an entire 30 years of expanded universe material with comics, novels and games. Even though I haven't read the novels or comics I have played most of the Star Wars games and they have also brought me immense joy throughout my childhood, like it has done for many others.
    The Originals gave us an epic universe to love and the Prequels gave us an amazing backstory to the most loved villain of all time. I thank him for all of his 6 movies unequivocally.
    So instead of whining about his scripts and writing, learn to open your mind and love the worlds he created for us and dive into them with your imagination, if you have any left.

      Valpas Kankaristo I dont get it either. To me, some people are just dumb, that's why they hate it. Take an example of the top of my head. "Wooden acting" lol. They want young Obi to talk like Luke now? Yoda even says, "Adventure, a Jedi does not crave these things". I can only imagine them talking like monks. In a galaxy 1,000 years out of conflict, filled with a political democratic system, in which the biggest exciting expedition for badass law enforcing jedi who've trained their whole lives, is just settling a trade dispute, I can't imagine peoplebeing very likely, especially monks who've taken up celibacy and crave neither excitement nkr adventure. Spot on acting if anything. McGreggor's "wooden" acting is exactly how it's supposed to be. I like realism more than cliche. Wouldn't be able to stamd it if he were like Luke or Han just to please the crowd. I liked that his acting seemed boring. I am capable of enjoying a different kind of movie. Some dumbasses just aren't. So don't try giving them a chance. It's a waste of everyone's time.

      Fred Fredson episode 1 shouldn’t exist really. The prequel trilogy would have worked better of episode 1 was scrapped with Attack of the clones being the first film and the 2nd film being a film set during the clone wars before episode 3. That’s the first way anyways to structure it because I feel that episode 1 feels unnecessary and adds little to the story. The only good things about episode 1 is all the OG actors.

      He was in a very different position in the early 70's. He was definitely not sitting on a pile of cash. He was using film students in his production team for the first Star Wars movie because they would do it for free and get college credit. Apart from the legends of Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness, he used three unknown actors for the lead roles of Luke, Leia, and Han. Again, because he couldn't afford to pay the big name stars (Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, and Al Pacino all auditioned for the role of Han Solo).

      Without a dynamite script, charismatic actors and an innovative production you'll never achieve excellence.
      The Force Awakens falls into the same pitfalls as Ep1, 2 and 3. Overly reliant on uninspired CG and a hollow script. At least with the prequels George dared to give us something original. But that alone is never enough. Story and character has to be the driving force behind any great film.

    When I first saw the original Star Wars movie, I only saw it redubbed as Episode IV A New Hope, but still had the old effects before seeing the Special Edition. And cuz of that, I already saw the original trilogy as Episodes IV-VI before seeing Episode I. So I was therefore excited when Episode I came out and then saw each of the prequels. And unlike certain fans, I enjoyed them. I got so into them that I started seeing I-III as the first three Star Wars movies followed by IV-VI. And was always fun watching them in I-VI order. So this is why I've always loved watching these behind the scenes stuff of the prequels, particularly Episode I as it was originally titled The Beginning before it was changed to The Phantom Menace. And yes, there are some inconsistencies that don't quite ring true with the original trilogy. Such as making Anakin too young whereas Sebastian Shaw was in his late 70s as Anakin in VI (hence Lucas eventually replaced him with Hayden Christensen in the 2004 release), Padmé dies right after giving birth to Luke and Leia even though Leia remembered her when she was young etc. But despite all that, I still love the prequels as they are and don't think I could imagine them being handled differently now. And yes, I still like both Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen as Anakin and shouldn't get the hate and bashing they've gotten over the years. Same goes for Ahmed Best as Jar Jar Binks, who I have to admit despite not caring much for in I-III, he's actually more interesting in The Clone Wars series.

They could have had a movie a year in episodic fashion, like the original series if they had something to say.

    George Lucas does a great job at building this universe and laying out the basic overall story, but he's a terrible director and very bad at executing the finer details. The reason lucas did such a brilliant job with the original trilogy is because he collaborated with other writers and directors. I wish he would have done the same thing with the prequels, and to his credit, he did try to get someone else to direct them, but everyone turned him down because they thought he should direct them. Lawrence Kasden also declined to write the screenplay for the same reason. So while I do believe the prequels should have had co-writers and other directors, I will give lucas credit in that he at least tried to get other people involved

    November 1st, 1994. Sheesh!
    I was only 11 years old, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was the #1 kids show, Bret Hart was the WWF(E) Champion, Super NES and Sega Genesis were battling for console supremacy, and Major League Baseball was coming off of NOT having a World Series due to the infamous MLB strike.

    I may not like what Disney is doing to it, and I may have grown up to the prequels instead of the originals, but I will be forever be grateful that I exist in a world that has Star Wars.
    Couldn't imagine my life without it 🥹
    May the force be with you, always!
