George Lucas also didn't want to originally direct the prequels. He just wanted to write but couldnt find anyone to do it. George knows his limits as a Director which was one of the reason's he got Spielberg to do Indiana Jones. He reached out to Spielberg and Ron Howard to direct the pre-quels during the time but their schedules were tied. And remember Empire Strikes Back was directed by Irvin Kershner and Return of the Jedi was Directed by Richard Marquand

@@carmineglitch They're not, they're mostly good, but with lots of writing and dialog faults because George basically wrote the scripts at the last minute of every prequel movie, I think some of them were even 1st drafts too which is just absurd, and with no one challenging him on any of the writing ideas, its no wonder that despite all the immense hard work everyone had to go through the prequels never lived up to their potential, its actually a miracle these movies turned out half decent, writing a script long after your movie has gone into production and finishing it the day before principle photography is just ridiculous movie suicide, I don't know what George was thinking, if George had simply spent more time refining his scripts and also letting a skilled writer co write with him to make sure all the ideas work and all the dialog sounds good then the prequels would have been masterpieces, because the ideas are really strong but were clumsily executed, I don't know why George didn't play it safe like he did on episode 5 and 6, he even said he hates writing scripts and isn't a big fan of directing either, I think he mostly likes the creative side of movie making.

And they made a video complaining about the prequel trilogy because it used so much cgi and how they didn't use real, physical models and stuff like that. But then I come and watch these webisodes and say to myself, "Man, look at all that cgi they used" (in a sarcastic voice of course)

    • @AndrewChapman

That's why I love watching the Blu-ray features and certain RUclips videos regarding the visual effects on the prequels. Cuz they actually show what were CGI and what were practical effects. The Phantom Menace is the second best Star Wars movie in my opinion. I understand if people didn't like the movie back in 1999, but it did not deserve to be trashed at all. It was one of the most technologically advanced movies of its time and took so much work. Not only that, but in my opinion, the story was so nicely timed and placed.

They really need to do a re-edit of this movie to bring out all the great aspects and play down what didn't work.

At the end when Rick says “I love shooting on location” I just felt bad for him, because the next two movies would be shot less and less on location until 3 where all but one shot was done in front of a blue screen.

I always find some of the "hate" fascinating. if the prequels were as bad as people think they were, star wars wouldn't be one of the most valuable movie franchises in history that it is today.

This, along with shooting on 35mm film and not horrible digital video, is why TPM holds up the best of the prequels.

Pod-racing was the worst part of the movie. You knew he was going to win and not be injured (Mary Sue). If there was a chance he'd be injured, or come in second then maybe there would have been drama. Like 1st place meant him and his mother were freed (stupid having them slaves in the first place - makes you dislike them). But if he came in second he'd have to leave his mother behind (which is what he did coming in first place, anyway). Why didn't they go back after Naboo to free her? Intolerable.

Looks like the local Tunisians were roped in for extras. They must of been somewhat perplexed, though I’m sure they had fun. Well, perhaps it was very hot and rather tedious. Who knows?
