Back when George Lucas was happy. Before the fans harrassed him so much to the point where he didn't want to make movies and hated the star wars franchise.
This comment is nonsense. 1. George is the guy that wrote all the "let go of your fear" stuff. He said in this Video he doesn't even feel pressure. Not worrying about certain things is the center point of his philosophy and he doesn't regret anything. 2. He got hate before the prequels. He said that some people hated C3PO and the ewoks and basically want every character to be Darth Maul. They also didn't like V when it came out.
George Lucas is happier now. He wasn't harrassed by fans, he was attacked by Hollywood, and some of the weapons were slander and mockery through the press. There are always weak minded and easily influenced fans sadly. As the guy in the interview said: "I bet they're not very good with women".
+Mediocre Generica Yeah, you should be sorry for getting all snobby at someone just because they have a different opinion than yours. Film, like all art, is subjective and even though most people think the prequels suck (me included) there's no need to look down on those who do enjoy them. At the end of the day, they're just movies.
Mediocre Generica Ooh, looks like I touched a nerve. Well, thanks for revealing that you're far more pathetic than I'd first thought. A middle-aged man who spends his time acting like a child on RUclips.
***** Agreed - Palpatines overall goal is pretty clear throughout the entire prequel-trilogy (one of the really great characters in the new Movies - what a tripple-A actor)). I meant more in terms of what the actual conflict between the tradefederation and Naboo was about, specifically.
+ola eriksson Wow, Lucas literally made us sit through what had to of been at least 30 minutes of boring exposition scenes about this trade federation crap, and he literally comes out and says "Yeah I don't know why."
christ the Big Breakfast! lol, great programme and i love these older interviews but christ i can't believe it's been so long, doesn't seem like long ago i was watching this is cinema
I like how Lucas jokes about getting to Putney on the family tree, then later in the interview, someone from Putney has asked a question and he looks back at the tree.
The presenter keeps going on about "Jedi White" and also say's "We've been doing Jedi White in The Shed" lol... seems like all the team/presenter were getting coked up or something during the breakfast show.
A very revealing interview this is. He doesn't know why bad guys surround the planet of queen amidala. He doesn't care. And he believes alot of ppl will find the story very confusing.
3:43 George: There is a planet, the bad guys have surrounded it. Johnny: Planet?! Bad guys?! Surrounded! Why? George: They can't-- uhh... we don't know. "HAHAHAHA!"
Even better is when Lucas goes on to say ect. "..that our 2 Jedi get caught up in this bigger conspiracy being orchestrated as the one we know as the Phantom Menace." To which the interviewer retorts "..the Phantom Menace....." as if those words are suppossed to be of great importance lol XD
Poor Jake Loyd people will bully him out of the spotlight. George will be hated. Jar Jar will unknowingly give emergency powers to the Emperor. Attack of the Clones will ruin the whole trilogy for people and George will lose his baby (Star Wars) but we'll still get Rogue One out of it. The Phantom Menace wasn't bad, it wasn't phenomenal either. It's over-hated and I'd argue underrated at this point and thats not just because of the action set pieces.
"95%, very little is actually real" "I don't know, they're just bad guys" "Most people will find the crawl very confusing" "People have high expectations so I just don't bother" Explains a lot
No, it doesn't. The circumstances are absolutely different and you failed to notice. OT Star Wars: In the early 1970s struggling young Director George Lucas at the beginning of his challenge on the making of what would be 1977's Star Wars was a situation where he came up against the old Hollywood moguls and their old time system, struggling to flesh out his manuscript and testing the reactions to it through his peers and colleagues-- the 1970s still reeling from the social, cultural upheavals of the 1960s--therefore the concepts went through dozens of changes but what is important that George Lucas had to refine and filter his ideas through his peers as he was also responsible for the budget/loan issued for his movie project, under extreme pressure to finish the movie, creating a special effects department that seemed to be too relaxed. Prequel Star Wars: George Lucas is now financially independent writes the script all by himself this time without any tests from peers.
The interviewer is so passive aggressive. He says a lot of overweight fanboys with long hair and goatees then that they’re bad with women. He also said that thing about George might change the family tree before. George obviously doesn’t care what the guy thinks which is how you handle little rubber petty people like that but man is the interviewer an annoying nerf herder.
"do you have the complete story mapped out?" 'no.' pretty much proof that these were money grabs? why else would you make them if you had no story planned? just little backstories... that'll make a great cohesive trilogy.
So what? That is exactly how things happen in creative writing. No matter what the story emerges spontaneously, otherwise it pretty much feels forced and unnatural.
He's against big corporations and isn't about the money. He funded all the prequels out of his own pocket. Plus, I don't think you understand how writing works. Stuff changes all the time
He literally explains that he did have the basic plot mapped out in story treatments. So the answer was actually yes, but he was being pedantic about it
I am convinced George Lucas does not know what he is doing nor does he care for the movies and stories he made. Take a page out of Uncle Ben "with great power, comes great responsibility"
+brodeurheaton thats why he waited tecnology for 20 years to advance his story cause he doesnt care, he couldve done what disney is doing but he didnt, you seem like one of those that take star wars way to serious
+Maximiliano Ríos Vera uh because you should care about the story you create and the fans! That's not a bad thing. People are fans of all sorts of things. You'd be upset to if you saw something you love and are interested in ruined or not done properly. I don't care too much, I'm just a fan of Star Wars.
Back when George Lucas was happy. Before the fans harrassed him so much to the point where he didn't want to make movies and hated the star wars franchise.
It did turn to garbage though. Bunch of woke garbage.
He never hated the Star Wars franchise
@@MeltedToast84 I think he meant the fans hated the franchise
This comment is nonsense.

This is the most lighthearted I've ever seen George in an interview, and I've seen them all.
+Retrocade Podcast Even when Seth McFarlan interviewed him? He's lighthearted there too.
Peter Hill I think he's a bit more relaxed here
Fair enough :)
+Retrocade Podcast before the rot of people despising the movie really sunk in
Completely agreed.^^^
Iv been checking out jake loyds interviews from back then and honestly he seemed like a really charismatic charming kid.
This is a cool interview. Lucas seems really relaxed and happy, much more than usually.
George Is Star Wars, love or hate the prequels, it was and is Georges' story. The Disney Sequel's are pure fan fiction.
I'm huge fan of George Lucas. He such a sweet and kind man who is also really smart and creative.
I love the prequels
sorry.
+Mediocre Generica Yeah, you should be sorry for getting all snobby at someone just because they have a different opinion than yours. I didn't know middle schoolers were allowed onto the Internet at this time of day.
Daniel Arshad fuck off, kid. You were born in the late 90's, you don't get to call anyone young.
Mediocre Generica
Ooh, looks like I touched a nerve. Well, thanks for revealing that you're far more pathetic than I'd first thought. A middle-aged man who spends his time acting like a child on RUclips.
George lucas is a hell of a dude
I remember watching this at the time.
Feeling old...
+David Mills Dude, are you grammar trolling me right now
+Eric Leippe Yours too :)
''most people find it (opening scrawl) confusing''
Now that's an understatement.
"to me its just a movie.:
EXACTLY!!! People who are so butt hurt about the prequels need to realize they're just movies meant for entertainment!
They failed at entertainment. That's the problem.
just movies yeah, but they were terrible movies
"bad guys, why?"
"we dont know why, it doesn't matter"...sums up his attitude to the story ;)
supmandude If they "failed" then why did so many people pay to watch them?
MarshalLucky1 Because people are fucking idiots and are willing to pay for shit they hate.
Anyone else notice how it says BB8 on the bottom right corner of the screen the whole time...
+DaPlegrim Illuminati confirmed
+Retrocade Podcast Illuminati unconfirmed and reconfirmed.
good spot lol freaky or wot.
Fuck bb8. Fuck the new trilogy.
actually no. it says THE BB 08:xxx
'The special effects in the movie are absolutely stunning'.
+TheJaayys Back in 99 they were pretty damn good yes.
and now
Very few shots *don't* hold up today
I never understood what the debacle with the trade federation and Naboo was about. Glad to see George Lucas isnt either.
A lot of the now-Legends EU lore goes into the background quite some bit including why the Trade Federation specifically chose Naboo to invade.
I had this video taped - my parents binned my vhs collection, so glad someone saved this
christ the Big Breakfast! lol, great programme and i love these older interviews but christ i can't believe it's been so long, doesn't seem like long ago i was watching this is cinema
I like how Lucas jokes about getting to Putney on the family tree, then later in the interview, someone from Putney has asked a question and he looks back at the tree.
Awesome interview and gives a great idea of the story he was going for
is it a weird coincidence that it says bb 8 in the bottom corner of this video
+JoefromNJ1 I guess. I mean, it's BB08. Idk.
The Force leaves no coincidences
did they do this interview in my backyard shed
2:57 my reaction when i watch the sequel trilogy
Lol Lucas on the big breakfast I forget how big that show was
Awesome 😎 nice to see the maker enjoying himself 😂 Those dude’s definitely got George a little buzz going 😂🍻🍺
4:12 - :22 Really catches your attention.
This is a rare moment in time. A moment before the OG Star Wars fans utterly destroyed George Lucas.
"there is very little of it that is actually real"
The presenter keeps going on about "Jedi White" and also say's "We've been doing Jedi White in The Shed" lol... seems like all the team/presenter were getting coked up or something during the breakfast show.
He says "Jed - i - Y" as in DIY
He does seem like a coke head but he didn’t say Jedi White. Although that could be a name Feige wouldn’t know…
A very revealing interview this is. He doesn't know why bad guys surround the planet of queen amidala. He doesn't care. And he believes alot of ppl will find the story very confusing.
+GooseHinson And he's proud of the fact that very little in the film is actually real.
+gocsa well it was impressive back then
because the trade federation types are cowards, and are dominated and used as puppets by the Sith Lord...duh.
He didn't wanted to say anything because this was before the release you idiot.
And it's still more substance than whatever Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, or JJ Abrams have offered...but thanks for playing.
Lucas: "I'm not human"
+Jason Solomon his chin should have told you this
+Jason Solomon That explains why the prequels dont feel lively.
jar jar is the key to all of this
3:43
George: There is a planet, the bad guys have surrounded it.
Johnny: Planet?! Bad guys?! Surrounded! Why?
George: They can't-- uhh... we don't know.
"HAHAHAHA!"
Even better is when Lucas goes on to say ect. "..that our 2 Jedi get caught up in this bigger conspiracy being orchestrated as the one we know as the Phantom Menace."
To which the interviewer retorts "..the Phantom Menace....." as if those words are suppossed to be of great importance lol XD
"Will you continue the trilogy of Luke, Leia and han?"
"Uh, no I won't."
Uh, yes you will.
+Peter Hill Uh no he won't
I swear to God if you think he returned and is directing the force awakens, Idk Wtf ima do!!
I didn't think he directed it, at the time I totally forgot it was Kathleen Kennedy that approached J.J.
ProJatior it deserved the hate man
Aidan Cooper Only Attack of the Clones deserved backlash. The Phantom Menace is at worst mediocre.
ProJatior You absolutely nailed it. 💯%
He wants to totally fuck up Star Wars before releasing the DVD's, naturally
"95%, very little is actually real"
"I don't know, they're just bad guys"
"Most people will find the crawl very confusing"
"People have high expectations so I just don't bother"
Explains a lot
sounds like you are talking about the force awakens
The last one is the only one that sounds like Force Awakens, and even then the movie was received way better (even now) than Phantom Menace in 1999.
No, it doesn't.
The circumstances are absolutely different and you failed to notice.

American Born Patriot. Nailed it. Yes!!!
The guy giving the interview is funny
Was this filmed in a carriage house ?
Maybe he should take some pressure, holy shit
4:43 Jar Jar
BB 08! LOL
I remember how amped everyone was for that movie... and then we saw it.
and i loved it!
Totally loved it. Critics will make you believe you hated it.
jesse osborn it was garbage!
oooohhh
Robert Smith like your parents reaction to your birth
3:06 ????????????????
The interviewer is so passive aggressive.
He says a lot of overweight fanboys with long hair and goatees then that they’re bad with women. He also said that thing about George might change the family tree before.

Film muff...buff haha
"do you have the complete story mapped out?"
'no.'
pretty much proof that these were money grabs? why else would you make them if you had no story planned? just little backstories... that'll make a great cohesive trilogy.
+him He didn't have the whole original trilogy mapped out either.
So what? That is exactly how things happen in creative writing. No matter what the story emerges spontaneously, otherwise it pretty much feels forced and unnatural.
He's against big corporations and isn't about the money. He funded all the prequels out of his own pocket. Plus, I don't think you understand how writing works. Stuff changes all the time
He sold his company and gave most of it to charity. It was never about the money.
He literally explains that he did have the basic plot mapped out in story treatments. So the answer was actually yes, but he was being pedantic about it
8:00 LIAR!!???
He was telling the truth the 50 page outline was not written until 2012-2013 and it was written by Michael Arndt with Lucas consulting.
I am convinced George Lucas does not know what he is doing nor does he care for the movies and stories he made. Take a page out of Uncle Ben "with great power, comes great responsibility"
You take movies too seriously.
+James Sunderland not even, it's escapism
+brodeurheaton thats why he waited tecnology for 20 years to advance his story cause he doesnt care, he couldve done what disney is doing but he didnt, you seem like one of those that take star wars way to serious
