Tuning from scratch will take a long time because you're constantly changing tension of the floating trem system, which changes the pitch of the other strings. Find something to put under the trem unit to set it in place while you tune. It'll save you time
Thanks for this. I never knew. I have a Floyd rose Dean ML and I don’t tighten the locking nuts all the way for this reason so I can tune it without loosening.
If you adjust the string tree up or down to the proper string angle, the strings won't be pulled sharp when you lock down the nut. The original version Floyd Rose didn't have fine tuners, so when it was locked, you had no means to tune it.
I have this same EVH Wolfgang Standard in Northern Lights finish. It’s my favorite guitar I’ve ever used. I paid about $750 in July 2021. The price was a bit lower at the time. I think it is worth getting! Especially if you like the finishes they over!
honestly if the pitch changes when locking the nut, your T-bar isn't set at the correct angle. You set that bar so that the angle behind the nut does not change when locking. That is what causes the guitar to drift in pitch after locking. Generally you want to make the string be in 1 straight line from the 0-fret end of the nut towards that bar, no changes in the line whatsoever.
You are totally correct. This particular video I should have clarified. More often than not, I get Floyd's in that do not have a string retainer. Thats what I was referring to. So the words and picture don't align.
Where do you keep your hex key? I refuse to ise a floyd rose because the hours i practiced and improved my ear by tuning on the fly (from the headstock, as the rock gods intended) would have been wasted messing around with that floyd rose system.
To lower the strings, the two posts that the bridge the floyd pivets on is your height adjustment. The key to a floyd rose is equal tension. If the bridge is too deep into the body, the springs are too tight. If its high in the sky, they are not tight enough.
I need someones opinion on the Jackson King V J32 guitar, which does have a floyd rose...it would be my first floyd rose guitar. Anyone got any tips I need to know about? Because that guitar is about 360€ currently
Yes. Some people like the cavity route so you can float the bridge but if you can’t route the body then you might have to raise the bridge and the neck. All of my Floyd’s sit a little higher than the body so they can float back, but they all have bridge stops in the rear cavity so they are dive only.
A few key errors here. Never tune a floating tremolo with it resting on anything. Always tune it while standing up, otherwise you will hear it straight away the moment you stand up it will go out of tune due to gravity. Also you should never need to use finer tuners if you guitar is set up properly. Tightening the locking nut should not affect your guitars tuning at all EVER. If your guitar is out when you tighten the locking nuts, the strings are not compressed enough by the little metal bar on the headstock which makes the strings lie flat on the metal of the locking mechanism. If the strings are not flat in the locking nut tightening the metal bar will mean you do not have to retune your guitar when you lock the strings down.
OK someone please help, no one seems to be having this problem so I don't know what I'm doing differently: Every time I tune a string to the right note once the locks are loosened, the tension of every single other sting diminishes, so their pitch lowers. Once I tune one back up to the right pitch, it lowers the pitch of the others again, so it's constantly too low and I can never get them up to the right pitch. I don't get how the string tension just vanishes into thin air, or how anyone runs into the problem of their strings being too sharp once they tighten the locks again.
You are not the only one. 2 issues here. 1, rather then tuning one string at a time, keep even tension on the bridge and tighten all the strings just a bit until final tuning. 2, The reason the tuning is going sharp when you lock the nut is the bar that is behind the nut is not tightened enough and the string is not lying flat in the nut. Hope is helps!
I would like to add if you slide the 3mm Allen key I have a small one that's got a curled end not a L shape and I wedge that underneath my fine tuners to get a complete fine tuner middle to middle from low to high.
After having this style of bridge since i was a teenager, i have to say, i absolutely HATE them. They have their moments, but unless you are doing EVH divebombs, then forget ever changing your tuning once you have one locked in.
@@strumwoodguitars same. I started yelling "ISBIT EVEN WORTH IT. ILL JUST THROW THE GUITAR AWAY" cause not only did I have to replace it. The screws and the inserts popped out. So I also had to re glue the inserts. Re level the bridge. And restring it. I wanted to die
in my opinion you aren't locking and unlocking the nut with "the back end of an Allen Key" Use the Front! but don't be a fool you are not getting it tight enough with the back of any Allen Key Lock and unlock with the Front and then only use Fine Tuners once finally In-Tune (With The Nut Locked so that the strings Do Not Slip And They will slip if you don't Use the Front if an Allen Key
God I hate Floyd Rose…I have one on my Sassafras Wolfgang and no matter what I do it doesn’t stay in tune…and if I use the bar and divebomb I lose tuning stability on 4 strings at a minimum. Sucks because I absolutely love the guitar and it plays better than any guitar I’ve ever played but the tuning stability issues have driven me to the brink.
That's a tough one to assess. Old strings can lose their stretch, Old springs underneath could also be an issue. Check that the hardware is tight also. Losse screws may have parts sliding when using the arm. Which is, of course, not desired.
I traded for a Charvel with a Floyd Rose and broke a string right away. I haven't been able to play it since. Least versatile guitar ever. Worthless system. It is impossible to balance the bridge and strings. It refuses to stay in tune for longer than 3 seconds. How the hell do you tune this thing. Tune one string, and the other 5 are completely out of tune. The guitar would play great if it weren't for the shitty bridge.
I've been trying to tune a floyd rose for 2 hours to no success. I feel like picking the guitar up and smashing it
Hopefully, this prevented that.
@@strumwoodguitarsyeah I got the hang of it 😂 it was my first floyd

Noo I don’t want a Floyd rose now 😂

this video saved me so much time thank you
You are welcome, glad it helped.
It's the reason why I do them!

@g3ultra- You beat me to it, bud...
Yup...
Actually helpful tiktok guitarist thank god
Thanks!
Don't forget depending on the tuning you may have to adjust the string tension so the bridge is sitting flat and not going down or up
This is true. I have a full setup video coming out soon. I'm realizing there are so many points to mention.
Question ) How Much did you pay for the Wolfgang ? And Are you impressed by it ... would you buy another one ?😊
This isn't my guitar. I was repairing it. They seem pretty good value for what you get.
I have this same EVH Wolfgang Standard in Northern Lights finish. It’s my favorite guitar I’ve ever used. I paid about $750 in July 2021. The price was a bit lower at the time. I think it is worth getting! Especially if you like the finishes they over!
U have my dream guitar
It is actually my clients guitar. Nice one to dream over.
i audibly said "OHHHH SO THATS HOW THAT WORKS" so yeah thankyou
Awesome. Glad it helped.
Very useful video, but what this guitar?
Very helpful man!!
Thanks! Glad it helped.
I just gotta get rich and hire a guitar tech.
There you go!
this is my first floyd rose i was wondering why i was going out of tune
Yeah they require a bit of a different approach but are fun to have.
Wolfgang Standard!! Great Guitar!!.
It was a nice one for sure.

i didnt know markiplier can play the guitar
LMAOOOOOOO was wondering the same
If it's going sharp when you put the lockers on, then you need to tighten that string bar just behind the nut.
Yes, that is correct.
Where do you keep your hex key? I refuse to ise a floyd rose because the hours i practiced and improved my ear by tuning on the fly (from the headstock, as the rock gods intended) would have been wasted messing around with that floyd rose system.
In my drawers. Haha. I just fix them. Some models have a molded holder on the back of the headstock, which hold the correct sizes.
How often would you recommend going through the trouble of unlocking the nut and tuning it there + the fine tuners?
Only when its needed. Basic rule is if you don't have enough movement in your fine tuners to get the string in tune.
I changed the strings on my jem jr for the first time yesterday. It took me about an hour 1/2 😅
I want to.lower my strings but not sure how and keep the floud parallell with the body, how to keep it from coming up off the body
To lower the strings, the two posts that the bridge the floyd pivets on is your height adjustment. The key to a floyd rose is equal tension. If the bridge is too deep into the body, the springs are too tight. If its high in the sky, they are not tight enough.

So a Floyd Rose can be installed even without the a cavity routing?
Yes. Some people like the cavity route so you can float the bridge but if you can’t route the body then you might have to raise the bridge and the neck. All of my Floyd’s sit a little higher than the body so they can float back, but they all have bridge stops in the rear cavity so they are dive only.
@@y_distaken9558 thank you for that.
Also, most people typically don't float up. So having it sit against the body gives you substantial stability. Depends on your plating style.
real quick and floyd rose are antonyms
my string broke next to tuner cuz nut was holding it, i can still use it but with not the best tone, thanks for this tutorial
Awesome that can fix it! Thanks for watching.

If the strings are not flat in the locking nut tightening the metal bar will mean you do not have to retune your guitar when you lock the strings down.
I’ve never touched the fine tuners after owning mine for months but it stays, might I be doing something wrong, I wouldn’t think so?
I won't say wrong, but if your guitar has never swayed perfect tune, then you are good.
Does this work if I want to tune down a whole step
It does work, yes. However, you will probably have to adjust your trem springs and truss rod to match the lower string tension.
It doesn't sharpen the string if you have the tensioner set properly
Thanks, This is true. I should have said if you don't have a string retainer (which is quite a few) then tune it flat.
how to i keep the bridge flat? mines bent back a little bit lol
If the bridge is bent towards the body, the springs underneath are too tight. If its lifting off the body, they are not tight enough.
OK someone please help, no one seems to be having this problem so I don't know what I'm doing differently:

Send back my new guitar because of this. Absolute torture. Now ordered the same without floyd rose
Well that works too. Enjoy!
Bought it for the dive bombs if only I knew the pain, I need a diy bridge that doesn't take 3 hours everytime I change strings gauges or tuning
My first couple setups were not quick. It will come. Dive bomb away my friend.
My string snapped when i was tightening the lock nut😢
Hmm, I wonder if there are burrs under the locking nut, or if the string was perhaps tuned too high.
No worries unwind the string from around the tuner pole piece pull and tighten down at the bridge.
ISTG it took so long to find the alan key i need i nvr thought they made one so small 😭
Hopefully you don't have it in a bin with 100 other small allen keys. That's the worst game.
What size Allen key
If I'm not mistaken, 4mm. I'm not certain at this point now.
3mm
I would like to add if you slide the 3mm Allen key I have a small one that's got a curled end not a L shape and I wedge that underneath my fine tuners to get a complete fine tuner middle to middle from low to high.
That's an interesting idea. I'll have to look into that.
After having this style of bridge since i was a teenager, i have to say, i absolutely HATE them. They have their moments, but unless you are doing EVH divebombs, then forget ever changing your tuning once you have one locked in.
Yeah, they certainly are not for everyone. They are fun to mess around on but I could never play one live.
So do you tune like the traditional way? E-A-D-G-B-E?
This one was done half step down. So Eb.
This doesn't work. 5 seconds of playing,it's out of tune again....
Now show people what's really hard with a fr bridge.... How to properly balance the floating bridge after a full restringing.
Thanks for the idea. I will have a full setup video series explaining the different bridges.
Aaaaand that'll only take approximately 2-3 hours if it's your first time.
Ask me how I know. Haha. My first floyd change was comical.

Origin: Thall
Start tuning the middle strings then outward. If you start at top by the time you get to bottom the top will be out of tune. This is the real trick
That is a great method for sure. Less movement that way.

Easier than tuning my shitty violin pegs
Sometimes it can be. Haha. Those friction tuning pegs can be quite difficult. Peg dope may be an easy fix.
