I have heard so many horrible stories about tuning a guitar with a floyd rose style floating bridge. The guy at the guitar store even said how difficult it was going to be and that I should buy an easier guitar. With your video, you have made it so easy to tune and fine tune my guitar that I am back in love with playing it everyday now! I go from standard to Drop C tuning without worry! The coin method is so easy to do! Now, the tuning is perfect again, no matter what tuning I choose! You sir, have given my Ibanez Floyd Rose guitar a reason to live again! Brilliant video. Easy to follow, easy to understand, and makes tuning my floyd rose a joy instead of a nerve racking chore that no one wants to undertake! My guitar thanks you!
mrdrastic Ben, I did all of this and my action won't stay put. The next day it'll slightly raise a hair as to where I can feel the difference. Tried looking it up but can't find anything. Is it the truss rod or what?
Let's say I want to change the string gauge to a 10-46 and tune from Standard to DGCFAd. From the points of your video, where should I start off? EDIT: nvm, managed to do it somehow after some trials and errors. Thank you very much for this video!
mrdrastic I need help!! Muy guitar is a 6 string but is configured like a 7 without the first one, it has .13 strings...and the guitar is tuned in B soo I need to get the guitar to .10 and to standard tuning. Do I first do the config that he shows for going to lighter strings and then do the one to tune up or how? When I change the string gauge to a lighter one I don't have to do the tuning he does after right?
you need an entire setup. You might be ok with the same nut.. but if possible you should change the nut. Open the back of the guitar and screw the spring screws out a few turns. now turn the fine tuning screws til theyre close to in the middle of their range. Remove the springs and replace the strings with .10s. replace the strings. with the neck stringlocks LOOSe you need to get it CLOSE to standard tuning. watch the tremolo block. you need to adjust the spring screws so the tremolo is FLAT while its tuned CLOSE to standard tuning. Maybe a note off at most. Once you have it flat with the strings close to in tune... youre done with the screws. now tune it with the tuners. i suggest slightly overtuning at first on the heavier strings.. like a sharp instead of the actual note. then the smaller strings (this is just to save a little time). as you raise tension on each string the strings youve already tuned will go flat and drop notes. THIS is the part thats a pain. Once it's VERY close to in tune tighten the stringlocks on the neck. now tune with the fine tuners on the bridge
That was literally my reasoning for having multiple Floyd equipped guitars. Now I have a Drop pedal. I still have the guitars, they're just all in E standard now. 😂

I am so close to selling my floyd rose guitars, quitting guitar and maybe even sell my house and move into a caravan and go vegan, thats how much i hate floyds right now

Just letting you know again uncle Ben you also just saved my HM strat. The fender locking tremolo was pushed into the divebomb position for so long. Went through this video twice and now it’s perfectly level and floating again. Thank you man! Rock on!!!
Sevs217 The fine tuners at the bridge can be tightened or loosened. I'm trying to break it down for the new guys too so bear with me. Tighten the fine tuners all the way down till it locks. Then loosen the fine tuners while counting how many turns it goes. Let's say you can turn it counter clockwise 20 times. Then tighten it 10 times. You're now in the middle of the fine tuning spectrum. This should be done when you're restringing but not exactly necessary.
Max Mustermann because they’re fine tuners so the can only tune a one sharp up or one flat down but if you do that the tension will be unbalanced and it will go out of tune
Brother you saved my guitars life... i put it together with 550/ 570 parts, golden lo pro...my dream guitar. But since I started tuning in D, and trying hybrid and regular sets, 0.9 and 0.10 at different times, my tuning stability never came back. I was about to give up after having my guitar abandoned for years as I tried 7 strings. Now I tried this method which was so clear and well explained...and man MY LO PRO WAS SHINING AGAIN!!!! I AM SO GRATEFUL 🙏
Not sure why I watched this vid at 2am, I don't have an FR trem guitar - hell, I don't even have an electric (yet). Your videos are absolutely amazing, you explain everything very well. I'll remember this vid just in case I need it down the road.
Thanks! the first person to explain Floyd roses completely and understandably. I have gone through 8 videos and this is the only one that really helps understanding everything including some nuances.
What if its in a drop setting? Drop D for example, or lets get wilder, Drop A or Z! Would you have to adjust the claw or do you do something else with that?
Sir you are the best, no more words describe how helpful your video is!! the key tip: lock the nut and adjust tuning from the back NOT from machine heads or fine tuners.
Let me tell you dude there are so many videos out there on how to drop tune your guitar and they make it so complicated this video helped me out SO much thankyou
Tried this method last week, it was my first time with a floyd, with an old 90s Jackson I recently got off ebay. I was changing tuning AND string gauge, meaning I didn't know whether the overall string tension would increase or decrease. So I blocked the bridge from moving both up and down, by inserting the removed backplate under the finetuning screws, and then putting a stacked 9v battery and penny inside the back - together they held the bridge perfectly in place. Changed the strings, gave them a good stretch and tuned up, locked the nut, unblocked the bridge and everything went wild, but sure enough as soon as I adjusted the screws in the back everything came perfect. It really wasn't difficult at all. I've seen other videos of people going round and round tuning and re-tuning having not blocked the bridge and it seems ridiculous.
Man THANK YOU! 4 hours of trying back and forth and Finally got to the tuning I needed! Sir my hat is off for you daily. Respect. Saved me from spending money that I don’t have LOL. My man🙏🏼🤘🏼🔥 practice you’re instrument everyone and fkn learn how to adjust it when you can. 😌
Thank god for uncle Ben. You have saved my fucking life. When I tune my guitar with a Floyd I end up feeling the urge to throw my guitar off the Empire State Building because it's so stressful and time consuming. Now that I know this shit, I'm all good.
The "tuning with the claw screws" trick saved me so much headache setting up an Ibanez Edge III today. Had it blocked off or out of commission for years because I bought it well before I was ready, and getting it actually working today was an amazing experience. Thank you Ben, this was by far the most helpful video I found, and that Fallout is absolutely gorgeous to top it all off!
This video convinced me to finally get a Floyd again. My Jackson just came today setup a step lower than I wanted and with trash strings. This video helped the setup Immensely. Thank you!
THREE MONTHS! That’s how long I’ve been trying to tune this Ibanez. Then, suddenly, I find your vid (which is by far the best) and DONE. Fifteen minutes. You, sir, are a god!
You wouldn't believe how grateful I am for this video. You have no idea how many songs I just didn't learn because they were in a different tuning and messing around with my Floyd Rose was a total pain in the ass.
I was confused by that too, but then I realized he meant "adding lighter strings OR drop tuning." Adding lighter strings means you're lowering the tension from the strings side causing the trem to tilt towards the back.. Because the strings are thinner. Likewise, if you're lowering your tuning, you're by definition lowering the tension from the strings so the trem will tilt towards the back springs as well. Generally, you use thicker strings to compensate for the lack of tension from down tuning, but that's not what he's talking about. Things that will cause your bridge to tilt back: lessening the tension from the strings - either from lowering your tuning, or from getting lighter strings. 25:45 he tells you where to block the trem if you're going to lessen the string tension (lower your tuning).
Mike G, my thoughts exactly. I want to go from 10 strings and E tuning to 11 strings and D standard (whole step lower). Seems like it may be an even balanced swap. I’m having to lower the tension so much on the back I feel the screws may come all the way out!
@@ulver7556 What did you end up doing out of curiosity? I would assume the added tensions of the strings from going to 11s from 10s would slightly be cancelled out by the fact that you're going down in tuning therefore taking away from tension
Why Can't I Think Of A Name? I first put on EB 11-48’s with the D tuning. The claw screws were out way to far in my opinion to balance the bridge. After some research, I realized those strings were meant for Gibson scale necks. My guitar’s neck is 25.5 scale. I ended up putting on D’Addario’s NYXL 11-56 strings. They’re perfect! beefier low strings have more tension to counter the springs. Claw screws are in a better position now, and the string buzz I had on the fifth string went away. 😅
This came up in my feed while I was having trouble tuning a floyd after replacing a broken string. First time attempt but Ben's walk-through had me dive bombing again in no time. Thanks, stepdad!
I just ordered a Floyd Rose guitar online and asked them to set it up with 10s in Standard 1/2 step down.. and they shipped it and said they forgot 1/2 step down and it's in plain standard tuning.. So glad i watched this now so once i get it i can adjust it and hopefully make it work. Now to figure out the intonation end of it lol.
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to get my Floyd Rose in tune for 3 hours now, going video by video, this is by far the best explanation and the best method and I’m beyond appreciative, thanks!
Great video. I got my first floyd guitar a month ago. It came tuned in E but I wanted it tuned in D. I spent more time finding something suitable at home to block the bridge than actually tuning the guitar. Less than 20 min. Thanks for the helpful content!
Thanks for sharing your tips Ben! I just got an Ibanez RG series, and this is my first guitar dealing with the floating bridge system. I ended up using some quarters wrapped in electric tape to hunker down that bridge while I tuned, and low and behold, I was finally able to get a tuned guitar after balancing the tremolo.
This is legit the only guy i come too for tips fonallyt after years of never knowing how to string a rose Uncle Ben helped me for the first time i 100% setup one myself.
Uncle Ben, thank you for this video. That screwdriver trick is awesome and works like a charm. I changed my string using your method and discovered my bridge had been out of balance. It's now in balance, thanks to your video.
I've had my own process for tuning Floyds for a long time. It was somewhat right. You blew my mind with the screwdriver tuning! Oh and made my life so much easier! Thanks Uncle Ben! After a 13 year relationship with Floyd Rose bridges; I think you've brought us closer together :)
Best Video I've ever found online at explaining this. Big thank you because I love all the sounds the floyd rose can make but I would get so discouraged looking at my Ibanez Xiphos....Now I can shred and be exited about it and tuning the guitar is a lot less stress inducing.

Thank you for creating such a superb video. I used to hate re-stringing my guitar but now I understand fully how it works and what I need to do, you've helped make it a cinch.
Thanks so much for this video, just bought a guitar with a floyd rose today and I had no idea how to tune it, your video explained it perfectly and I successfully changed the tuning after watching your video!
Ben you are a god. This is the best guide video on the net that I have found to tune a floyd rose after re-stringing. Thank you for the claw screw trick as well, I am no longer going to spend half a night (like last night) trying to tune my guitar when it will never work. I know understand my guitar (Ibanez RG470) much better. Cheers.
What a sympathetic host, I specially loved the painting of him as King in the background totally my kind of person. I would always go with a tremolo stop for 15 bucks but a bit of change is always more easy.
Thank you, I have been trying to explain this to my friend forever without physically showing him and this video explains how the balancing act works perfectly. Kudos, sir.
I changed my strings for the first time 3 days ago and in all the videos I've watched I saw the bridge was tottaly alignment with the guitar body and I did the same but until now I wasn't comfortable; the strings are so tight no matter how much I lossen the springs, and you are the only one I came across that cleared to me that the tremolo edge is different , thanks a lot.

This hits pretty close to home 😂

Also, always a good idea to reset (re-center) the fine tuners before tuning with keys.

This should be done when you're restringing but not exactly necessary.
thanks, but why not adjusting them everytime you change the tuning ?
Max Mustermann because they’re fine tuners so the can only tune a one sharp up or one flat down but if you do that the tension will be unbalanced and it will go out of tune
oof, that comment didn't age well
Brother you saved my guitars life... i put it together with 550/ 570 parts, golden lo pro...my dream guitar. I AM SO GRATEFUL 🙏
happy to help!!
That fallout is gorgeous!
Amazing! You have the only video on YT that really, really, really, shows the easiest and best way to tune up on a FR guitar. ❤
Not sure why I watched this vid at 2am, I don't have an FR trem guitar - hell, I don't even have an electric (yet). Your videos are absolutely amazing, you explain everything very well. I'll remember this vid just in case I need it down the road.
Literally same. I'm in the same situation and it's 2 AM.
Thanks! the first person to explain Floyd roses completely and understandably. I have gone through 8 videos and this is the only one that really helps understanding everything including some nuances.
What if its in a drop setting? Drop D for example, or lets get wilder, Drop A or Z! Would you have to adjust the claw or do you do something else with that?
+Brian Soria that would fall under the "things that subtract weight/tension" category.
@@BenEller How would that work? Would you have to completely mess with all the strings again or could you just quickly change the 6th string down?
If you’re reading this PAY ATTENTION. This man gives you everything you need. I finally understand the Floyd Rose. Awesome video man
Hold on, I just felt nostalgic at 4:42 for no reason....... then I realised something sounded like Final Fantasy 7???!!!
Sir you are the best, no more words describe how helpful your video is!! the key tip: lock the nut and adjust tuning from the back NOT from machine heads or fine tuners.
"tremBolo" cracks me up everytime xD
This is one of the best guitar videos on the internet PERIOD.
I just need to buy another Charvel, one in Eb and one in standard
SORRY FOR SHOUTING BUT THIS IS THE BEST FN FLOYD TUNING CLIP I'VE SEEN. IT'S ADDED YEARS BACK IN MY LIFE AND NOW I LOVE MY FLOYD AGAIN
So, if I were to change gauges to a thicker string and tune down, would it be appropriate to block the tremolo both ways?
Yep
Or just loosen the screws a whole lot before you block it
Let me tell you dude there are so many videos out there on how to drop tune your guitar and they make it so complicated this video helped me out SO much thankyou
3:24 is Underneath The Rotting Pizza soundtrack from Final Fantasy 7
THANK YOU!
My prayers have been answered! Are you God?

8 years looking for a tutorial like this... You sir, saved my life
MAH GETURS GOT A TREMBULUR ON IT
Man THANK YOU!
Thank you!
God I cant figure this out I guess il stop by Walmart for sister act tomarow
THREE MONTHS! That’s how long I’ve been trying to tune this Ibanez. Then, suddenly, I find your vid (which is by far the best) and DONE. Fifteen minutes. You, sir, are a god!
Only 3 months?
Lmfao 6 years for me! I still can't get mine in tune
Tell me why I suck at pinch harmonics.
Chris Wenzel just keep doing it over and over. You'll find the sweet spot that it requires over time
Well I swear the secret is to repeat it countless times until it comes effortlessly.
ruclips.net/video/tjrKUwWenBg/видео.html
Hopefully you figured it out by now
You wouldn't believe how grateful I am for this video.
You have no idea how many songs I just didn't learn because they were in a different tuning and messing around with my Floyd Rose was a total pain in the ass.
im confused, dont you need to add tension (heavier strings) when tuning lower? which side of the trem do you block in this case?
I was confused by that too, but then I realized he meant "adding lighter strings OR drop tuning."
Adding lighter strings means you're lowering the tension from the strings side causing the trem to tilt towards the back..
Thanks, stepdad!
or simply if you wanna keep your mental health just dont use floyd rose
I just ordered a Floyd Rose guitar online and asked them to set it up with 10s in Standard 1/2 step down.. and they shipped it and said they forgot 1/2 step down and it's in plain standard tuning.. So glad i watched this now so once i get it i can adjust it and hopefully make it work. Now to figure out the intonation end of it lol.
I have a guitar with this floating bridge and I never even knew that it was called a "floyd rose floating bridge."
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to get my Floyd Rose in tune for 3 hours now, going video by video, this is by far the best explanation and the best method and I’m beyond appreciative, thanks!
Why the hell are they so difficult?
Meccarox CAuse when they all good theybgreat
Meccarox locking tuners and the bridge is a bitch sometimes
It’s really all just basic physics ...
Because when you do it right and keep one guitar setup and tuned and use another guitar for a different tuning and setup than they're golden.
Thank you! I’ve had my Jackson Explorer for two years and now I can FINALLY set it up with new strings and any tuning. Drop C baby!
Where can I get the DvD?!? Help!

Mate I was just about to lock my floyd rose and I seen this video u saved my kh202 thanks so much this is why you rule on guitar
Tl;dr: still huge pain in the ass
Great video. I got my first floyd guitar a month ago. It came tuned in E but I wanted it tuned in D. I spent more time finding something suitable at home to block the bridge than actually tuning the guitar. Less than 20 min. Thanks for the helpful content!
I saw Sister Act 2 on a plane. Made me want to yell Allah Admiral Ackbar and jump out the door.
Hahahaha
The spring trick at the end of it all has literally saved my life
Thanks uncle ben!
This is the most helpful video I have found!!!! I accidently removed my bridge entriely while changing strings because my block came out and could not get it situated for anything!!!! Thank you this is a huge help!
Thank you for creating such a superb video. I used to hate re-stringing my guitar but now I understand fully how it works and what I need to do, you've helped make it a cinch.
Thanks so much for this video, just bought a guitar with a floyd rose today and I had no idea how to tune it, your video explained it perfectly and I successfully changed the tuning after watching your video!
couldn't tell you how many of these I watched to learn how to setup my FR and this is the video to rule them all. Thank you, Uncle Ben!
Kudos, sir.
I changed my strings for the first time 3 days ago and in all the videos I've watched I saw the bridge was tottaly alignment with the guitar body and I did the same but until now I wasn't comfortable; the strings are so tight no matter how much I lossen the springs, and you are the only one I came across that cleared to me that the tremolo edge is different , thanks a lot.
mine is rg370dx with edge III
This is by far the best instruction on how to adjust a floating trem. Thanks Uncle Ben 👍
This is literally the greatest video on the internet
