How to fix a BROKEN headstock.
This Epiphone Riviera came in with a note of "cracked headstock." Any damage is not ideal but turns out it was fully severed. Here is the process and steps on how to go about fixing it.

Quick repair on a very UNIQUE baritone guitar!
I hate my Floyd and I’ve blocked it. Thumbs up for “Play Panama”
Thank you bro
Personally, I never use Titebond 2 for anything in a guitar... ever . Just original.. even things you think will never have to come apart for a repair.... like headstock veneer, broken neck heels , ect.. Things you think you want to be permanent ...maybe building a laminated neck ... that's about it.... Sooner or later, it will come to bite you in the ass....best to just keep it off your bench IMHO. A person thinks , oh well , it's just binding, you dont want it to come off.. right? Well , if the fish glue releases on that back in the future because the owner left it in a car accidentally in the summer , now that titebond 2 is holding that binding in place permanently but the glue the body was put together with wasn't.. you'll destroy the binding, when it may have released with the other glue... keep it off the bench folks and you'll not ever have to regret it .
Also tune is while holding it. If you do it on its back it’s be slightly out of tune when you hold it normal because floyd rose likes to cause head aches
Reverse relic job
I love these whats in the case videos, currently repairing a severed headstock Agile AL-3200 and this served as good reference as well.
Yeah thanks. I enjoy doing them. Hope it was helpful. I have a Gibson SG I'm shooting currently.
mmmh, how did you patch the binding gap? Not shown here
It's just a small square of new binding glued in.
Where did you get the brown binding tape? What brand is it? Thanks!!
I got it from Stewmac. It's great stuff and comes in a couple of different widths.
I traded for a Charvel with a Floyd Rose and broke a string right away. I haven't been able to play it since. Least versatile guitar ever. Worthless system. It is impossible to balance the bridge and strings. It refuses to stay in tune for longer than 3 seconds. How the hell do you tune this thing. Tune one string, and the other 5 are completely out of tune. The guitar would play great if it weren't for the shitty bridge.
Generally, small increments across the bridge work well. But also loose or low quality tuners will serve a huge part of tuning. It depends on the quality of the hardware used, but some systems can be very tempermental.
Any idea why my high E string is way too tight and wont tune up to E?
My first guess would be a broken tuner. If not that, it may be getting stuck along the string path. Double check at the nut as well the saddle.
@strumwoodguitars it wasn't placed into the floyd correctly I fixed it thank you
OMG 🤩🤩 that was satisfying 🤩🤩 I hope I can come somewhere close to that result 🥶. What products did you use?
Thanks. It was all Glu-boost. Designed specifically for this purpose.
This has happened to my 2015 d18
Dang. Hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction.
Very useful video, but what this guitar?
Thanks. This was an EVH Wolfgang if I'm not mistaken.
Pliers 😂. IK it's not recommended but it does the job for me
Yep, that works also. But it's way too easy to slip and scratch the guitar. Whatever you are comfortable with.
Very helpful, well done video! I have a 1980 Yamaha acoustic guitar that has a very small spot on the top, where the finish wore through to the wood grain. You cannot really see it. I’m more concerned with protecting the wood, than addressing a cosmetic issue. Thinking whether I should simply put a drop of lacquer on the spot, and gently rub it into the grain. Or should I try a drop of this GluBoost (in your affiliate link). I notice there are 3 versions: Fill n' Finish Pro Formula, Fill n' Finish Thin, and Fill n' Finish Ultra Thin. Which one did you use, or recommend? In my case, the goal is not to fix a visual blemish, since it is hardly noticeable unless you run your fingers over it. Rather I simply want to seal and protect the bare spruce wood. Thanks for such a thorough video! Definitely worth a like and a subscribe!
Thank you so much. Appreciate that. They would all work, the different glues are just how thick it flows. The only thing about your guitar is if 80s yamahas were lacquer or polyurethane. Gluboost would be safer if you don't know.
@ UPDATE: I tried GluBoost, total disaster! I returned the product, and ended up using nail polish remover to get rid of this awful mess. Eventually applied matching stain, instead, to protect the wood.
Thank you, this is genius
Cheers. I have certainly spent my time swearing and trying to find an easier way. Glad it helped.
What the shit?? Clearly called pickpocket intonation tool. Badiddler?!?!?
It’s not that simple.. I think this would have confused me instead of help me if i didn’t already know what I was doing..
Good job! Very well done, and excellent final result. 🙂Patience is key with repairs like this. To anyone else trying this: Since Superglue dries so fast, be careful using a paper towel to wipe excess glue. Often, it will stick to the glue in the blink of an eye. Trust me. You don't want that.
Thanks. You are correct with wiping. I generally dab or just soak up the excess by holding papertowel near the working spot.
What would this repair typically cost?
It's tough to say. Depends on how much work is required. Typically, you can expect somewhere between $150-400.
I changed the strings on my jem jr for the first time yesterday. It took me about an hour 1/2 😅
But you did it! It gets easier.
@strumwoodguitars I think it'll get easier it's not that hard. I don't want to pay 130 buck at guitar center no more.😣
Excelent! 👌
Thanks.
Nice job!
Thank you! Cheers!
This doesn't work. 5 seconds of playing,it's out of tune again....
May have some loose hardware. As well, are you stretching the strings at all? It shouldn't move that quickly.
Two days ago I hear about the Martin binding issue. Lo and behold, my HD-35 has come apart at exactly the same place as this beautiful specimen of a guitar.
Yeah, it's very, very common. Hope you get it resolved.
How did you make sure that the razorblade didn't cut into the rest of the finish as you were leveling the bump out? I'm afraid to do just that on my guitar for that reason. The guitar edge is a tricky spot to work on because of the curved surface.
Experience. You sort of just get a feel for it. Just go slow and light pressure if you are worried. I watch the factory tours of the workers on scraping binding and THAT is some confidence.
So do you tune like the traditional way? E-A-D-G-B-E?
This one was done half step down. So Eb.
Magical
Ta da. Thanks.
Nice work 🤘🏻
Thank you!
Binding is stupid and unnecessary. It weakens the joint between the top and sides. Purely cosmetic.
In some cases it covers the glue joint. But yes it is purely cosmetic.
HI! I am an avid guitarist and I love Martin guitars and I was wondering: What is the difference between a Martin D42 and a Martin D45?? Apart from the abalano inlays, what are the construction differences? Is the D45 superior for materials, wood, bracing and everything else?? Could I get an answer from whoever works with these guitars, please? Thank you!
The 42 has a noticeably louder and brighter sound, while the 45 is a fuller, tighter sound. The 42 also has forward shifted scalloped braces, the 45 gets a wood upgrade and has more cosmetic upgrades.
Don't forget depending on the tuning you may have to adjust the string tension so the bridge is sitting flat and not going down or up
This is true. I have a full setup video coming out soon. I'm realizing there are so many points to mention.
Making it all look all nice and fancy like you all guys suck
Is Titebond 2 a wood glue?
It is indeed.
@@strumwoodguitars I have had this problem on my Martin guitar multiple times. The first time it happened I took it to a luthier and he fixed it with Elmers Glue and it didn't last. Then I tried to fix it myself with a super glue that was recommended by a RUclips video. That ended up being a mess as you can imagine. I've been holding the front binding on with bits of Scotch tape out of frustration. I thought I would research one more time and found your video. I was weary about using wood glue again because I felt the issue was that it would not adhere to the binding. Anyway, I gave it a shot and bought the TiteBond, the green tape, and the 200 and 440 grit sandpaper and followed your tutorial. And so far it is working great. It seems like the TiteBond had a thicker consistency and didn't drip all over. I'm hoping this is the last time I have to deal with this binding issue. At least for a long time. Thank you!
Floyd’s suck get a Kahler
I have also subscribed to your channel Strumwood, thank you so much 🎉
Thanks to you as well!
This happened on HD28 retro 2014 it was the top below the pick guard, I sent it to Martin through the closest authorized dealer (2 hours there 2 hours back 2xs) he charged me on one way ship then Martin charged me polish + 3 frett replacement with my permission, guitar was flawless always inside my home with proper humidity, Martin had my guitar 8 months and total $300 now my lower binding is doing the exact same thing so I will be doing the repair because I don't want Martin to have my guitar with 8 hours driving and 8 months later. I know that it was a long story but I wanted to share this with others. I love my guitar it's an incredible instrument, but I feel Martin should fix this issue, I've heard from other forums that this is very common and it shouldn't be. The long time owner of the authorized Martin dealer told me he's never seen this before and that I must be mistreating my beautiful guitar (NOT) I am the only one who touches the guitar I play almost everyday and have other guitars to play in public or if visiting friends and family. Thank you so much for this great teaching video btw the focus was fine the information was solid Gold 8
Very common. I don't understand it. Thanks for the kind words.
Bought it for the dive bombs if only I knew the pain, I need a diy bridge that doesn't take 3 hours everytime I change strings gauges or tuning
My first couple setups were not quick. It will come. Dive bomb away my friend.
You trimmed the most important part
What part is that?
Superb
Thanks!
Absolutely gorgeous! Your video really inspires me to do the same repair on my guitar with confidence . Thank you so much!
Awesome thank you! Just take your time. Let me know how it goes.
So the part where the binding split and you cut a square to fill a gap...is that the only way to do that? I was wondering if it's possible to heat the binding on both sides and stretch it so both sides meet up. Or is that ill-advised? Thanks!
I mean you could do that, but I don't want to upset the binding more than I have to. It also depends on how large the gap is as well. Even warm, it's not going to stretch out too far.
I use the DVD case to keep the bridge up and after I changed my strings I took the case out and now everything's all out of whack somehow. I'm about to freaking sell this thing the strings are pulled really tight and the whole bridge is laying into my guitar
I would add any "extra stress" to blocking the floyd. Take the back cover off, and fill the gap underneath from the bridge to the cavity. Commonly done with a block of wood or business cards. Then the bridge shouldn't move at all on ya. It's tricky, don't give up!
It sounds like your using different gauge strings then what was previously on the guitar and/or possible a different tuning. You can put whatever gauge and tuning you want to, but if you change it, this will occur. You need to loosen the screws on the spring plate to allow the bridge to level back out. Once you get it set right, stay within the tuning you have and use the same gauge string set from here on out.
What glue did you use?
Titebond. It's my favourite glue for how easy it is to work with and clean up.
Origin: Thall
God I hate Floyd Rose…I have one on my Sassafras Wolfgang and no matter what I do it doesn’t stay in tune…and if I use the bar and divebomb I lose tuning stability on 4 strings at a minimum. Sucks because I absolutely love the guitar and it plays better than any guitar I’ve ever played but the tuning stability issues have driven me to the brink.
That's a tough one to assess. Old strings can lose their stretch, Old springs underneath could also be an issue. Check that the hardware is tight also. Losse screws may have parts sliding when using the arm. Which is, of course, not desired.
Simple and highly effective, thx
Thanks!
Do most guitar places offer this kind of repair with seafoam green guitars?
Honestly, not a lot of shops do finish work at all. But of course every shop is different. But if they do, they should do color as well.
@@strumwoodguitars thanks for the info! I'll do research
OK someone please help, no one seems to be having this problem so I don't know what I'm doing differently: Every time I tune a string to the right note once the locks are loosened, the tension of every single other sting diminishes, so their pitch lowers. Once I tune one back up to the right pitch, it lowers the pitch of the others again, so it's constantly too low and I can never get them up to the right pitch. I don't get how the string tension just vanishes into thin air, or how anyone runs into the problem of their strings being too sharp once they tighten the locks again.
You are not the only one. 2 issues here. 1, rather then tuning one string at a time, keep even tension on the bridge and tighten all the strings just a bit until final tuning. 2, The reason the tuning is going sharp when you lock the nut is the bar that is behind the nut is not tightened enough and the string is not lying flat in the nut. Hope is helps!
What size Allen key
If I'm not mistaken, 4mm. I'm not certain at this point now.
3mm
