    We need more M43 contents like this on RUclips. Most camera reviewers are brainwashing everyone about sensor sizes, they hardly talk about the benefit, just the bad stuff

    Nice review. I own the Sony A7lll and like it a lot even the menu. I went to buy a telephoto to get closer to birds and wildlife and nothing available. Really my only option was Sigma 150-600mm with MC11 adapter that is "suppose" to work. That lens is 6.5 lbs and sort of like carrying a new born baby when I hike in the Colorado mountains. Based on your channel I asked the sales guy to see a G9 with the Leica 100-400mm. Sooooo much smaller and lighter I bought it. Just tried it today and amazing sharp images and I am very picky. Interesting to get anything better I would have to spend 16,000 for a full frame telephoto and would NOT hike with it. This is absolutely the best solution for what I am doing. Thanks a bunch.

    The focus issues with Panasonic cameras is way overblown. Experienced photographers, or at least in my case and experience level, there are no issues.

    Excellent. The ergonomics are so much better on the Panasonics than Sony. That and the lens size makes the overall package much easier to carry around. I sense that when you have the time and the Sony is mounted on a tripod, you can get better image results in certain situations. However, you have to fiddle with the Sony a lot more to get that better image. I own the G85 and am happy with it. However the body is a little too small for my hands and that is why I continue to look for a slightly larger body but don't want to carry around 20lbs of camera gear every time I walk out the door. Thanks again.

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I generally agree with that, better usability often makes more difference than sensor output, and the IBIS is extremely effective, especially in combination with stabilized Panasonic lens. Thank you for watching!

    Panasonic G9 reminds me of when I used Canon DSLRs. It is definitely nice to use. Menus, handling, and image quality are great. I was using Fuji, but it never really connected with me. I know many like the dials, but I preferred accessing ISO, Shutter Speed, and aperture from dials and buttons. It is a preference and also what brought me to Panasonic.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад

      I actually agree with that, Fuji system without mode dial requires getting used to and it is not to the taste of every user.

    • @mmartel
      @mmartel 5 лет назад +1

      Same here. I tested a gx85 vs xt20 for a week side by side before with multiple lenses before choosing the Panasonic. A huge point in favor of the Panasonic was the controls and handling. I get why some prefer the Fuji but it just didn't feel natural to me. Panasonic controls just felt right to my brain and fingers instantly. I really like their touchscreen controls and menus as well. I'm a former Nikon DSLR and Nikon 1 series owner. Panasonic body felt like what Nikon should have always been to me from a controls perspective. 😁

    New firmware updates today boys! The customizability of the buttons/UI, the size, the feel, the quality and everything about the G9 has just blown me away. Also the video is gorgeous, the 80MP mode works well even for blue hour shots and it's so much easier to carry this gear as I also have other things to bring on trips.

    I just ordered a G9 after lots of research about other systems and lenses. To be honest full frame mirrorless was not appealing enough for me due to expensive and big lenses or some other obvious quirks. I think it might be different in 1-2 years.
    Fuji seems great but also quite expensive, it seems the most advantage would be less need for editing.
    One thing I am missing in Micro43 is an affordable autofocus 9 or 10mm prime. That made me even consider a canon 80D for the versatile and cheap lenses available.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад

      I think that G9 is very good choice. 7-14mm F4 is now becoming more affordable, although the aperture is not very bright at F4.

    For me, the biggest advantage for M43 cameras, like the G9, is portability of the camera and lenses. I hike a lot and like taking photos of wildlife. The fact that, with a G9, I can carry both camera and telephoto zoom lenses in a hiking backpack makes my life even better than having to buy a specialized Full-frame DSLR with a gigantic telephoto lens, which would definitely not be comfortable to hike with.

    Interesting video, your opinion makes me feel a bit better about having invested in an Olympus M 4/3 system about two years ago. I've been feeling lately that I may have made a mistake and that it was going to possibly fall by the wayside.

    Wow, you packed a lot of good info in there! Thanks for a great video. Subscribed.
    I'm a hybrid shooter and am watching the new Panasonic S1 closely. I hope there will be a good wide-angle lens for it right away because I shoot real estate (it doesn't look like any of the first 3 lenses would suit me - I'd like something that starts around 14 to 16 mm). Yours is a good channel to follow to keep me updated and informed!

    • @TheHybridShooter

      Thank you, I appreciate your subscription! Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM will be available for L-mount at the launch of S1.

    • @fellowcitizen
      @fellowcitizen 5 лет назад

      I'm not sure that the LS14mm F/1.8 will be available immediately at the S1 launch, as Yamaki-san said that L-mount ART primes will be staggered across the first year due to manufacturing schedules and capacities, rather than all releasing together. They will have priority, though, since they're Sigma's native mount for the LSD Foveon full-frame.
      As a zoom, the ART 14-24 mm f/2.8 DG HSM hasn't been announced for L mount, however it will be 100% compatible via the SA-L or EF-L adaptor, and may be a better overall performer if you don't need the light-volume.
      KY said that they upgraded Leica's protocols specifically to assure performance and compatibility with the Sigma Global Vision lenses in SA- and EF-mounts.
      Having said that, the L mount will allow wide lenses to be significantly smaller and lighter with better corner performance (moreso than standard and telephoto lenses) so it could be worth waiting for a design intended foremost for the L mount.

    Good explanation of why you have chosen the Panasonic bodies without pretense around the trade-offs inherent in m43. Easy to do when you also own Sony FF. I also have found Panasonic m43 to be well-designed, fast to use, and deliver very good value for the money. It will be interesting to see how the new Panasonic FF bodies compete vs the other new mirrorless FF as well as the incumbent Sony bodies. It seems to me that many current Sony shooters would consider Panasonic if the lenses and AF is sufficient based on better ergonomics with the Panasonic. But we'll see!

    One feature good to mention in GH5 - 5k/24fps 10bit via "Open Gate" mode.
    Also, I've noticed in some side by side comparisons - newer 20mp sensor is a bit less light sensitive than 16mp, m.b. ~1/3ev or less.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, that is useful feature. Sensor itself is not nore or less sensitive, but the ISO values are not always correct. Some manufacturers lie a lot about real ISO to make their pictures cleaner at specific settings.

    Another great video fulled with information. Today I visited local photo fair and got my hands on almost every camera ppl compare in videos on youtube (Canon/Fuji/Sony/Nikon). I have to say, G9 is soooo good, it's the perfect size and weight and usability is top notch. I'm drooling for FF all the time but after holding EOS R, it feels too big and heavy and not too comfortable to hold. Sony a7iii is somewhat like my G80 in terms of handling but lenses are big.
    How would you compare Panasonic FF models with Sony/Canon/Fuji in terms of ergonomics and size. And is it as comfortable like G9?

    I have a gx85 and g7 to shoot 4k video. On buildings with straight lines, the gx85 has noticeably more moire than the g7 thanks to the gx85's removal of the low pass filter. In some situations this is definitely a curse. Actually I see it in many situations such as on bricks and straight lines which have me using the G7 instead of the GX85. Also I believe the moire is coming from the 4k down-sampling processing since the gx85 and g7 use an uneven integer for a small down-scaling. In your observation, does the G9 have less 4k moire? Also I would think that the GH5s probably should have the very least chance of moire since it has the multi-aspect sensor just like the GH2 had. The GH2 lacked 1080p moire which made it a rare video camera with very clean 1080p. Would you consider doing a 4k moire test between the G85, G9 and GH5s? I think that would be a very interesting and informative video. Moire really destroys videos IMO. Thank you.

  • @AndySnap
    @AndySnap 5 лет назад

    The G9 is the most ergononically excellent cameras I've ever used, and the image quality is more than good enough for 95% of photography. Add in the versatility of the fast/silent shooting, stills and video capability, and you have a system which is far more versatile than dslrs. And weighs much less!

    You say that you like the g9 for daytime use and walk around. Is that just photography or video? I have a gx9, but no mic input, so thinking of g9 for vlogging, broll, and when I can later afford a 100-300, wildlife. (I currently use an FZ2500 for wildlife, my old canon 70d for vlogging, and gx9 for carry around/b&w street photography). I'm thinking the G9 would up my vlogging quality with the right lens as continous autofocus seems to finally be there for that camera. I love your stuff by the way!

Would be happy if you could say some words about GX9 compared to the G85 you have. G85 seems to be more rounded all inclusive package but with older 16 MP sensor and older JPEG Engine. It would be very interesting to hear your opinion. Thanks and keep up your great work!

    Help! I'm having a hard time deciding between the gh5 and gh5s. In your opinion, can the lack of ibis in the gh5s be overcome using a rig, monopod, gimble, etc? Or is the ibis in the gh5 just superior?

    • @TheHybridShooter

      It can be overcome by using the gimbal, or other type of stabilizing device, the footage will be smoother than with GH5 IBIS Only, it is just less practical.

      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад +3

      So do I, but I am afraid that they will only be updating top models.
      G9 is so big to accommodate technology needed for processing 20 fps RAW, shooting, 4K60p and so on, to have enough room for 6.5 stop IBIS and to provide best possible controls and balance with bigger lenses.

    MFT is probably one of the best compromise in termes of quality / weight.
    However, I don't understand why you pretend that FF and MFT cameras are not made for same pictures... I used to have a M240 and a A7RIII and I take the same pictures with my GX8 currently.

      If you want to achieve shallow depth of field or shoot at high ISO, that is generally easier to do with larger sensor, so I still recommend choosing camera according to specific application.

    each camera has a trick
    g80 - everything you need to be happy: sane price, microphone input, weather proof, IBIS, 100mb. Cons - AF for video, weak lowlight
    gh5 - Main thing 4k60p. Cons: expensive, AF, lowlight
    gh5s - Main thing LowLight. Cons: ultraexpensove, IBIS, AF.
    a6300 - Main thing: APS-C (probably a little better in the dark, but say it gh5s), good AF. Сons rolling, IBIS
    a6500 - everything you need to be happy but: Сons expensive!! rolling
    a7 iii - insane price, huge glasses, heavy. Why, then, was to move away from canon?

    • @TheHybridShooter

      I don't necessarily agree with that, but the G80 is still a great camera, especially at that price point.

      The conversation is endless. Most people are quite satisfied with the pictures from the camera smartphone. Professional photographers will get Canon because of the availability of beautiful lenses. If you're a photo lover and you don't want to carry heavy cameras with you, you need to look more at the lenses than at the bodies.

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад

      Other brands have great lenses as well, that is not a reason to get canon in particular.

      BMPCC 4K has great output, but the absence of AF-C is a deal breaker for me.

  • @ricardorgomez

    I hate to sound like a fanboy... But your thoughts echoed mine.
    The only problem is that I feel Panasonic rushed the G9 to market. It looks to be a very good camera. I played with one briefly and really liked it. People are too quick to underestimate the convenience of the LCD display. I also love that you can charge it through USB-C. They should've done that with the GH5
    To me, the G9 doesn't really offer enough to get separate video and stills cameras. If you only do stills, the G9 won't disappoint. But if you do even a little video and may do more, the extra video features of the GH5 make it a bargain.
    If the G9 offered 14-bit raw stills, like the GH5S does, it would've been a no-brainer. I agree that there is lots of development that can be done with m43 and 14-bit raw I think will come in with the G10. But we probably won't see that until 2020 at the earliest.
    So for now, it will be the GH5 for both stills and video. The GH5 is as good if not better than my GX8 for many reasons. I love the images I can squeeze out of it. And filmmakers far beyond my own talent will swear by the GH series... That's good enough for me.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @TheHybridShooter
      @TheHybridShooter  5 лет назад

      Thank you, I chose the G9 over GH5 because of the improved handling, although GH5 is great as well, the IBIS is a bit more effective, the processing or RAW is also better, that can be seen in better dynamic range (by about 25%) and I also use 80.5 megapixels high-res mode a lot, so for me it is either G9 for still or GH5S for video, although GH5 is still great for both. At the time of G9 introduction, the AF was also much better on the G9, that got improved later on GH5 via FW updates.

    • @ricardorgomez
      @ricardorgomez 5 лет назад

      Hopefully, I'll be getting another camera in a month or so. Your information and videos are making me think again and again about what to do. I know the GH5 has slightly better RAW capture than the GX8. And I love my GX8. So that's good. And if the G9 is better in that regard to the GH5, even better. And the G9 has everything I wanted the GX8 'upgrade' to have: dual memory card slots, no AA filter, better AF...
      I LOVE photography. Love it. This year, I was asked out of the blue to do some videography. I know I'd want to direct a video/film. But to actually do the technical part was quite thrilling. Each of the shoots have been dramatically better than the previous one in every way. I like that the GH5S has more room to grow into.
      The more I think about it, the more I think l'll go down the same road you did. Much of my hesitation just comes with being as efficient with my purchases. All this cost lots of money and I want to make thorough use out of everything I own. And the G9, GH5 and GH5S all use the same batteries. Yay!!!
