I have a problem with this camera-LUMIX G9- while filming a video clip that shows me the lights flashes because I requested my camera from Amazon and it is an NTSC version and I am here in Saudi Arabia and we are here PAL Is there a way to remove these flashes or the way to change the system from NTSC to the PAL system
Hello. Thanks for all the reviews. Great videos and i have watched more than a bunch so far and i liked your reviews. It would help me immensely if you answer my question. Is G9 good for shooting videos indoors with available light (No studio lights). This is what I intend to do. My focus is to interview in given situation and lights indoor. Please do answer if this camera can cope well in those dull lighting conditions. Thank you🙏
@@TheHybridShooter really you think so I'm just wondering if I'll have the capacity to do some okay video work. Both Olympus and the G9 have that great function of high resolution and I also like the bulb feature where you get to see it happen I don't think Fuji can do that but I could be wrong and maybe that high-resolution doesn't care compared to the APC. is the really tough choice. I also like using a lot of old 16 mm C Mount lenses.🤷♂️ but I can probably just get a used micro 4/3 cheap for that have you ever messed around with the original 4/3 there's a new interest in them again. Have you ever tried to put any of the old 4/3 lenses on micro 4/3. People talk about about the original lenses being incredibly well made thanks for the feedback
Best handling camera I've ever owned. I about teared up when I took it out of the box and held it. Love the G9 so much I still watch reviews of it. :) As soon as it's back in stock, I'll be grabbing the Sigma 56mm f1.4 for portraits. Always enjoy your channel.
@@TheHybridShooter There is one minor flaw, although perhaps it's just my model: the battery grip shows some play when I'm using heavier lenses. I feel like it should have two points of connexion. Apart from that, it's perfect :)
@@fellowcitizen Yep, a minor tic I've noticed too. As long as I don't man-handle the thing, doesn't bother me. And I still prefer it to other brands where you have to take the battery door off and shove that thing up there. Easier when you want to work without it.
@@jd_99 What cameras did you abandon them for? So often comes down to personal tastes and needs. For my work, headshots and portraits in (mostly) controlled situations, I certainly don't find the IQ lacking. They (my G9 and G85) also suit my video needs as well. And I've heard Fuji's called a lot of things, but never a hipster toy! :) And I'm thinking of grabbing an Olympus EM-10 mark ii for street photography now, as it's price has dropped so much.
You sold me completely. I've bought the GX9 in a sale and due to your reviews I ordered a G9 in addition. I will sell my complete Nikon Full Frame stuff and I'm looking forward so much to the change. Already impressed with the super sweet GX9. So, thank you very much and best wishes to Slovakia!
Thank you for posting a 1yr review. I'm glad you demonstrated how well the G9 works in low light and the super fast and accurate AF. A lot of people don't think the G9 has good AF, but your demonstrations prove them wrong. I'm at 6 months with the G9, and it's my favorite camera of all time, and I use it a lot more than I should.
That pretty much concurs with my experience over last year. I too got the G9 almost immediately after it's launch (december 2017). In my case I decided to get rid of all my full frame gear after years working with it (I've been doing photography for over 40 years with all kinds of cameras, even large frame cameras). And I haven't had regrets for one minute. Maybe if you are into low light action shooting most of the time you might need full frame (or larger), but the past year I produced images in most circumstances, some of them quite challenging. I found the G9 to be a very reliable work horse that produces great images. Of course the right lens is important as has always been the case with any camera. But in many circumstances the G9 produces great images even when used with 'consumer glass' and with greater ease than my full frame gear that really needed top glass to produce good results. So actually in that sense the G9 is a bargain as well. Also tried the Sony A7 III. Great image quality, but not that enthusiastic about the handling, but that is personal preference. Nice small and light body, but then again I would need a bunch of heavy large lenses and adapters while I was just so happy to get rid of all that heavy gear. So I stick with the G9. From the endless list of cameras I had or used over the years I would pick the G9 again. It's just that good. I just got back from a trip to the Atlantic cost of Andalucia (Cadiz, Barbate, Tarifa) and the results are fantastic.
@@pioneer7777777 Mainly 7-14 mm, 12-60mm, 20 mm, 45mm, 35-100 mm and .... the 'lowly' 14-140 mm (new type). To be honest, I am walking around a lot with the 14-140 mm. I might have been lucky, but my copy is performing fantastic. I borrow a 50-200 mm from a friend every now and then. That is a stellar lens.
Picked up an open box G9 from an authorized Panasonic dealer 6 months ago for $1,045 on eBay, essentially was brand new, and I love it too. Got the 3-year warranty on it too.
I have never enjoyed using a camera more than my G9 and GX9. The G9 is my go to camera all the time. My Nikon 810 is seldom used now and it feels old fashioned. The camera is comfortable and very sturdy in my hands, and I am 71 and have used hundreds of different cameras since I was 7. This is the first system that feels like real quality. The images are just fine for 13-19 prints with little post processing. Low light theater work sometimes needs a little noise reduction, but the camera is quiet, even with a the mechanical shutter. I use the GH5 for theater video as I have to adjust the shutter angle to avoid banding with led and regular lighting mixed. The electronic shutter works great for sports though I prefer to peak of action shoot and use the mechanical shutter.
Really like your no-nonsense videos, and this is a great summary. Just one comment. At 11:22 you say that the playback button no longer has a delay on firmware 1.2. That's not my experience - I still get a significant delay, and there was no mention of that being fixed in the firmware release notes. Perhaps what's happened is that you're now using UHS-II cards and that has improved the speed. For me using regular UHS-I cards, there is a delay of at least a second with 1 card, slightly longer with 2. It's frustrating as the G80 managed to do it near instantaneously with the exact same card, so I don't know why the G9 is so much slower. At the very least I wish it would keep just the last shot photo in a buffer for instant access to check or delete. I hope they can sort this in the next firmware update.
You'll love it. I just got mine a few weeks ago after shooting Nikon for years and also having Olympus and Panasonic m43's.. this camera is SO far beyond the others. I am more film focused, so I believe it really checks all the boxes w/o breaking the budget. All the best!
I've had and used the G9 since April and can concur. The only downside is the difficulty connecting to a phone using the android app. It's confusing and clunky. Ibis and hi Res modes are phenomenal. I loved using it in a recent trip to the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Handheld 1s exposures of waterfalls and the light weight made hiking with my 100-300mm lens a breeze. Battery life was excellent and the fully articulated screen was also very useful for getting unique angles.
@@TheHybridShooter I really wish they spent the extra few dollars on integrating an NFC chip like Sony to make pairing and launching the app much easier, simpler and faster.
@@baihu4u I've got nfc on my GX8, still haven't figured it out, or used it. Got a fancy iPhone thinking I'd be able to edit raws on Lightroom mobile, but it won't send them, need to convert images to jpeg in camera before sending, or maybe if I get the Apple sd card reader. 99% of the time though, it's just SD to computer for me. Will try find Lumix NFC video tutorial now actually.
@@RJPhotographics Not sure about iPhone. But with Android, I simply downloaded & unstalled Lumix app from the Google Play Store, loaded up the app in my phone, powered up my phone, opened the LCD panel, touched my phone to the side of my GH4 in the NFC area, it made an audible charm sound, and my GH4 asked what method I wanted to use to authorize the connection. I selected QR code. I snapped a pic in side the lumix app of QR code displayed on the GH4 LCD screen, it went thru a registration & connection process then camera & app notified me my GH4 was now under remote control. Now every time I load the app on my phone & touch the correct area on my GH4 it connects directly. Try a process similar to that with your iPhone. I'd imagine it wouldn't be too much different? ✌🏾
Great 1-year summary review! Especially with your background by not being a LUMIX ambassador and indeed having a A7iii you still constantly recommend the G9. I think this is a big advantage of your reviews because you could easily say that A7iii is better. I am searching now for alonger time about the best hybrid camera for not tripod use for photo and video. No other systems seems to be acceptable for run and gun video shooting because of their insufficient IBIS. Also A6500 is pretty shaky in comparison which is an alternative in my opinion . There is a just a m4/3-is-dead-mentality right now out there which unsettled me and probability other people.
Thank you, both A7 III and G9 my favorite cameras and I generally recommend both depending on what people intend to use it for. I don't really care about _____ is dead click-bait videos / articles, both Olympus and Panasonic are developing M43 as a replacement of professional APS-C cameras like D500 or 7D mark II, so no, M43 is not dead.
The truth is traditional DSLRs from Canon and Nikon will die before M4/3 does. With M4/3 there is currently a 10 year ecosystem of lenses available, and new lenses and bodies are still being announced, so no, it isn't dead.
Just pointing out the only error you didn't correct, 13:35 you call the 42.5 Nocticron an f/1.4 instead of f/1.2. Outstanding and very concise long term update. Looking forward to the upcoming lens reviews.
Thanks for your 1yr review. Doing handheld 1sec telephoto shots is my favorite party trick to troll my Nikon buddies. I’ve done a lot of wildlife shooting this year with the G9 and it’s never let me down. It’s had salt water splashed on it dozens of times, rained on, dropped in mud, laid onto “tripods made of snow,” and kicked into the bottom of a dingy running away a bear. The G9+telephoto excels in backwoods hunting with a camera. The only problem I have is the rubber in the corner of the thumb rest has lifted, not sure how to glue back down.
Great to see a long term owner review and not just some tech reviewer using it for 3 days! I've recently been assessing which camera to buy for product photography and casual use and out of the Sony A6500, Fuji X-T2 & X-T3, Sony A7ii and the G9 I eventually went for the G9. I don't photograph in low light so I don't care about a larger sensor... The combination of huge (and quite cheap) lens selection, usability, IBIS, pixel shift feature and cheaper prices just made it an obvious choice. As a total package it's a no brainer (MANY will disagree!) I doubt Panasonic can squeeze anything else from the M43 system though, so it'll be the S1 next...
Thank you, If you can use high-res mode it indeed provides great results. There is still room for improvement in M43 though, like implementation of 14-bit RAW, AI features for DFD autofocus, RAW video in GH line and so on, so I hope that Panasonic will continue pioneering these features in M43 system.
Thanks to your channel I made my decision to buy this camera, I must say that this camera amazed me from the first time I touch it! The grip fits perfect in my hand and all the controls are in a logical position, can't wait to use it more and I also look forward to use some telephoto lens with it! Best regards from Romania!
@@TheHybridShooter Oh no, I can't afford a whole new set of lenses, please have mercy. But I agree, that sounds like a combo that would be hard to avoid.
Hi, I took the plunge & part ex"d my full frame D810 +18-35,24-70,80-200,200-400 Nikon lenses to purchase the G9 + 8-18,12-60, 42.5,200, 100-400 Leica/pan lenses in July 2018.The G9 allows me to go exploring/ travelling without to much weight, I was very surprised as to the quality. The build is very good also intuitive in use[displays] and excellent for wildlife. Very pleased I purchased this, also an added benefit I get to use my 8x10 more for landscapes.
I bought this camera used and really enjoy it. My only dislikes are the hair trigger shutter, 2 buttons on the front by the grip are not ergonomically positioned. On the battery grip the AEL/AFL button is flush and hard to find, forget about it if wearing gloves. Love the joystick for moving the focus point around and my first dSLR the Canon 30D had it back in 2007. Feels really good in the hands. Curious to see the the replacement for the G9 will be like. Glad to see promoting the right tool for the job. Bigger sensor camera for low light work.
This is a really good video. I've always dismissed M43 because of sensor size, but this video has me reconsidering this camera; it has everything you need to know as a photographer. I look forward to more videos.
I used to do the same, but the Viltrox speed booster will give you better focal coverage and wider apertures. My Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 became an f/1.2 on my g85, which made it even better for portraits.
Thank you. I am wanting to upgrade my G7 to G9, unfortunately the G7 doesn't hold much trade-in value. A Panasonic can certainly shoot above ISO 6400 if needs must, it does take on a pleasant grainy fast-film look. Use it when otherwise you would loose the shot. There are tricks to play to lessen the noise; the default NR is quite aggressive. My GH4 will burst raw+jpg everything focussed indefinitely at full speed, or at least until I got bored at over 300 shots; you do need a fast SD card (and some makes are far better than others); I've never managed to fill the buffer on that one. I like to do as little post as possible; set the camera up to do the job first, it generally has better firmware than any software can massage back into a picture.
I thought you should know that your content regarding the G9 has played a huge role in me getting the camera. I bought it last week as an update to my GX85. I needed the extra assurance offered by weather sealing and dual card slots, for work. You've provided me with extremely detailed information that was vital to making the right choice: do I stay with M43, or move to Fuji? In the end, glass won as I have invested in M43 glass over the years. I thought about switching to APS-C and the X-H1 had what I needed. But at $1500 with a kit lens, it's $500 over what I paid for my G9, and I already have good glass for it. Your content made me realize that there's more to photography than a picture with slightly less noise, particularly when shooting hybrid and on a budget. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to say THANK YOU.
Thanks for a great update review! You love your G9 and what's not to like? I own it and love it. While the Sony A7 III and Fuji XT-3 have stolen the show for 2018, the G9 often is depicted as an underdog/sleeper bargain by many RUclips reviewers. Unfortunately, Panasonic's video AF reputation still seems to be a stigma for many people, even though there have been great recent improvements. Another knock on the G9 is the smaller sensor, even though the outstanding IBIS can reduce high ISO usage. Learn the G9 and there won't be much you can't do with the camera. The G9 is truly a great all around camera and thanks for your knowledgeable long term review!
Thank you, it is indeed underrated, but that is mostly due to Panasonic not being a traditional manufacturer with cult following, hopefully the S1 and S1R will get more attention.
Great video, thanks. Question..... Does the G9 implement the internal teleconverter that the GH5 has? Not sure if I've worded that correctly, but with the GH5 you are able to do video using the full sensor, or, if you desire, there is the ability to choose to film with the sensor cropped. This, in effect, gives you additional focal range as you are punched into a fraction of the complete sensor. Thanks.
@@TheHybridShooter, thanks, but since the sensor is large enough to still give you pixel for pixel resolution (no resampling) the resolution should not be degraded. I believe that's why the crop for 4K and HD is different (the HD crop is more severe), the crop only goes down as much as possible without losing resolution.... No resampling.
I love my G9 so much. It is responsible for reigniting my passion for photography. I'm gonna get another one and start shooting weddings again. It is the most underrated camera ever. I used it equally for stills and video. I've started doing professional video work with it. It's a pleasure to work with.
I’ve had my G9 for about six weeks now. So much to learn. In this video I just saw a few screens that I have never seen. This camera sure pack in a lot of features. It’s going to take me six months to go through everything that this camera has to offer. This is my first real camera. All my other ones were point and shoot. It’s nice to know I can grow into the G9. I also see he uses Luminar 3 as well. I got that too, it’s a fantastic piece of software. Still looking for a prime lens. Maybe a Panasonic 1.4, I think that would be nice, but they are expensive. Okay, enough rambling on.
I think the G9 is really underrated and did not get much "press". It is a highly capable camera with a lot of great features. For me, when I first started shooting with it can comparing it to my G7, it was an eye opener. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the camera. The next camera I will get will have to be VASTLY superior to the G9 in what I shoot and video.
@@TheHybridShooter There are the Panasonic Luminaries who use and publish videos about the camera, but still, there was really no "buzz" when it was released. There was a LOT of "buzz" about the G7 when it was released. Now, at the discounted price of $1200 (body), it's a great buy. But all the hype is with FF mirrorless.
@@TheHybridShooter they failed at that if it's the case. Anyway, it's a hidden gem of a camera, and thanks to youtubers like you, the word is getting out. Looking for to see what Panasonic does with the FF mirrorless...
Great video, thank you. I have had a G9 for around a year as well and like it a lot. My favourite lenses are the 35 to 100mm, 12-35mm and the 8-18mm. My only real grudge is the video limit of 30mins.
Thanks for that; a very thorough and informative one year appraisal of the G9. I've had mine for nine months and have no complaints, except the learning curve, but that's me. Mike in Oz
I bought and sold many cameras in 2018. X100F, GX85, M50, G9, Nikon Z6 and Fuji X-T3. I can easily say that the G9 with Leica 12-60mm was my favorite camera to use of the bunch. I’ll probably buy another one after I get bored and sell the x-t3.
@@FotosyMas. Can I ask how you liked the G9 as a direct comparison to the X-T3? And would you say the Leica 12-60mm lens is the perfect match for the G9 in most situations? Thanks!
@@paulhancock What I liked more on the G9 over the X-T3: -Size and handling. Probably one of the best ergonomics I've ever seen on a camera. -Better LCD with much better implemented touch interface -Better menus -TONS of creative options (6K photo, Stop-Motion, etc) -Incredible IBIS up to 6.5 stops of stabilization - The new Panasonic color science for both RAW and Jpegs is amazing. I would put it a notch over Fuji's which became my second favorite. -HUGE and fast EVF with 0.83x magnification -Even though X-T3 has more advanced video options for the serious videographer, I still find the video coming out of the G9 to be crisper, sharper, smoother. -Much better battery life -Image quality is on par with the Fuji up to ISO 3200. From that point on Fuji pulls ahead but not by much. I found that the Fuji has better shadow recovery, while the G9 has better highlight recovery. -High resolution mode produces incredible stills -Lens selection is great with many prime lenses and zooms to choose from -Did I mention ergonomics? ;) In regards to the 12-60mm Pana Leica I found it to be an excellent piece of glass. Sharp, contrasty, amazing color rendering. It's also weather sealed. It can combine with Dual IS to produce spectacular results for handheld video, and up to 1.5 seconds shutter speed exposures in still mode. I would get that for everyday do it all lens and add a fast 1.4 - 1.7 prime lens for low light situations.
I use this G9 in Photo's form beginning 2022 after kicking out my Canon RP Fullframe. :) just love how good this camera is. it's better than a lot of FullFrame camera's.
I've had mine for almost 3 months now - I use it for studio (macro) photography and for simple movie capabilities. It took me a month to figure out all the settings (at least the ones I use), but now that I've sorted out the functions - It's handling is superb. The stabilization is excellent. I love the Monochromatic D mode and tend to use it and Vivid quite a bit. The High Resolution mode works incredibly well for my studio photos. In all - I love this camera - I'm saving up to buy a metabones adapter - I keep hearing wonderful things about this camera and canon lenses. Thanks for your excellent reviews!!
Very close to a G9 or EM1.2 purchase at the moment, cant quite decide as im moving from fuji to MFT but picking either or is a really difficult task right now!
I really love the ergonomics of this camera. Best I've ever used before, only the shutter button isn't as tactile as I would like. However just recently I noticed a big disadvantage of the fully articulating screen. It sucks if you use an l-bracket, you can't really tilt it upwards or downwards anymore.
Shutter button is made to be used with back-button focusing like on D5 / 1Dx mark II so the half-click was sacrificed. Articulating screen has some disadvantages, it is also blocked when using strap, so that is a trade-off.
@@SamualWilliams I only switch to manual and bb focus if I need to, but the majority of my shots are focus/shoot, so usually I prefer to only need one button for that and I like the speed advantage of not having to wait for autofocus before pressing the shutter. Plus with the G9, switching the af mode is so easy.
Great video! It's nice to see someone do a review after a year of use... Just a few things I'd like to reflect on: * Color science. Panasonic has had fantastic color science for almost a decade as far as I experienced... Even back in 2010 when I picked up the LX3 for travel, the colors were just amazing. After going pro, I still look at the pics and amaze at the color. Yup, just make some minor adjustments in post and image is done! * Auto Focus. I hate it when people focus on this issue. These people need to get a point & shoot instead of a tool like the G9. The G9 is at least a level or two better than my Panasonic GX8 and I've been very happy with the AF of my GX8. With video and especially stills. When you tune the AF, it gets even better. * Lenses. Yes, the Panasonic-Leica lenses are absolutely fantastic! People hate the costs... But if you're a serious enthusiast or pro, there is only the Olympus Pro lenses as a possible substitute. Great lenses but not optimized at all for Panasonic. They also have a different look. Excellent but different. Great camera and review! Can't wait to get mine! Keep up the great work!
i have the same camera with leica 12-60 optics. I am a professional photographer and I use this camera mainly for videos but when taking photos I noticed a poor quality in the JPEG format with little detail in some circumstances ... I am trying them all but to no avail ... do you have any suggestions to improve the overall quality of my shots?
Professionals usually don't use JPEGs, so shooting in RAW would be the first step. It uses a small M43 sensor, so the IQ is limited... there is not much that can be done about that.
@@TheHybridShooter obviously I use the raw but also the jpeg I need to do things, I only noticed this low quality in the details and I wondered if it was a normal thing ... with EOS 700d that I used before G9 this did not happen ...The reviews speak of excellent quality in jpeg and this is the reason for my question, I repeat shooting both in raw and in jpeg and in raw the problem is not ... Thanks for your answer
"Excellent image quality" is very relative term, it depends entirely on individual expectations, so it is difficult to comment on. M43 output definitely looks more digital than full frame or even APS-C due to the amount of sharpening that is required.
@@TheHybridShooter in any case it is always a great camera and for videos it returns an excellent quality, beyond my expectations ... In the case of photographs I have to take care of the lighting a little more but in any case the raw gives good results, certainly not comparable to the Nikon D810 that we use in my photo studio, but still satisfactory. A strange thing that I noticed is that using the AI function the jpeg becomes sharper, significantly worse working in manual ... obviously I still have to study it well ... Thanks for the answers and your support
Nice review. What I really don't get though is the idea that you don't need good ISO performance with M4/3 because you can use lower SS thanks to the efficient IBIS. That can be true in most static scenes but as soon as you have moving subjects you just need to use fast SS and therefore higher ISO. Which is why I looked at Olympus' OMD-EM1II for birding but I had to abandon the idea because of the relatively poor ISO performance. I mean, it's nice that small sensors can provide good results these days but I think we should avoid to broaden false illusions.
I know you don't have the G9 anymore but, from memory, would you recommend this in favour of the Fuji XT3 if video and stills are just as important to you? I was going towards the XT3 due to better video autofocus but after the 2.0 update maybe saving a bit of money and getting the G9 is a better option. Ideas? Thank you.
I have bought this camera after watching your videos. And gosh I'm happy with it. Plus after all cash back from Panasonic and discounts it came to £1069, recently got 25mm f1.7 lens and not joking, everything looks so much nicer. I love this camera. Mabey not as good in the low light as somy a7m3 but half the price of it and in day time is smashing.
Great timing. I just sold my GX80 because it was too uncomfortable for me to use and thinking about the G9 as a successor. You convinced me that this is still a good choice.
Hello sir great video. I wasn't to ask your advice. I have a gh5 but looking for a camera to take good stills. I wanted to ask if the G9 stills quality is better quality that the stills if the Gh5 as I don't want to waste money if the stills quality is the same. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks jF
I am currently in the process of buying a camera, but I don't know which one is better! I would only use it for video, and I don't know which would be the best! The sony A6400 or Fuji XT3 or the Panasonic G9! Maybe you could help me decide which would be the best choice?
Good round up, usability and enjoyment while using the camera are much under rated values. Too many people just look at specifications. I have tried a few of the lenses you mentioned at a Panasonic event, nice but there seems to be questions about repairability that makes me wary of getting them. But I must admit my Oly 12-40 and 40-150 pro lenses work very well on my G85 and focus just as well as my 14-140 and 100-300.
Thank you, I don't think that preparing Leica line lenses could be a problem, Panasonic is also launching PRO support, so the repairs shouldn't take long and you will get another lens to use in the mean time.
Adore the shot at 3:27 - it's beautiful the Leica 42.5 is an f/1.2 , not f/1.4, just a small correction. Were it not for the sensor size and its drawbacks, I seriously would consider getting the G9 as well. Thank you for sharing your experience with the camera.
For the price this camera is going for these days it's almost crazy not to get one. Flagship level camera for lower mid range price. Why not? For lenses the Leica 12-60 is hard to beat as an all around multipurpose zoom. You will want to also add a fast prime for low light use. I love my Leica 25mm f/1.4, but you can definitely get away with the regular 25mm f/1.7 version which is stupidly cheap and just as sharp.
For video, there is no discernible difference between 4K footage out of this camera and 4K 10-bit footage at higher bitrates from other cameras. There is a noticeable difference, however, between the smooth footage out of this camera and just about everything else out there. So smooth - the stabilization defies laws of science. The high res mode alone is worth it. It really is crazy. The only thing this camera can't do well is shoot video in low light. That's the trade-off with the m43 sensor.
Mine apparently struggles when the temperature falls below -5 or so. It doesn't shut down but the software starts lagging and glitching. I've had to take out the battery a couple of times to reboot it (I waited for 5 minutes at least for it to refresh the frozen software but nothing happened). Other than that I agree with everything you said in the video. The camera is really worth the money and is a camera not getting enough attention. Keep up the detailed videos!
Is this a good beginner camera? I am planning to buy my first camera ever and I have no background in photography but with research for almost a month now I have a checklist which this camera almost completed but I am still quite hesitant. Any ways, your videos are really helpful and I would say very viewer friendly especially for someone like me. ☺️.
Excellent review and thanks for doing a 1-year in experience. As an Olympus shooter I am extremely impressed by the ergonomics of the G9. I love the ergonomics of the E-M1 Mk II but the G9 is even better in the hand, perfect size and with lots of actual, real controls that are missing on most cameras no a days (AF choice switch etc). Not to mention the menus and the touch interface, Olympus, come on, take notes! (Well actually all other companies should take note). The only thing holding me back from adding the G9 as a second body to my m43 is the fact that part from the lovely PL 25/1.4 I have only Olympus Pro-line lenses from 12mm to 300mm and while I believe S-AF is still very fast with those, I am very sceptical to the C-AF which is already struggling on the G9 with Panasonics on DFD lenses for fast action (birding, wild life and sports). On the other hand, C-AF is struggling on all m43 cameras still, even with PDAF so... :) Have you had the chance to try any Olympus lenses with the G9? Regards Rasmus
Thank you, it is indeed great in terms of ergonomy. Panasonic lenses indeed work better on Panasonic cameras and Olympus lenses work better on Olympus cameras. I haven't had opportunity to try Olympus lenses on the G9, but I intend to do so in the future.
Great video! I have my G9 for just over a month now and quite love it. Still getting acquainted with it though. I have no comparison between firmare 1.1 and 1.2. as I upgraded right away and actually I have to wait ca. 2 seconds before picture appears after pushing "playback" button. May it be related to some other setting or e.g. SD card itself?
Thank you, I unfortunately don't know, lag just completely disappeared after I installed FW 1.2, as you can see in the video. I don't think that I have changed anything else.
By the way, not related to playback issue, but while mounting Panasonic 20mm 1.7 II on your G9, did you experience a "scratching" sound and feeling of "leaping" on the mount with a bit too much resistance? I just got my brand new 20mm and it is quite unpleasant to mount - I can compare only with my Leica 12-60 and K&F adapter that I use for old M42 lenses, but both of these mount very smooth in opposit to 20mm that seems to scratch. I am thinking to return it and have it replaced, unless this is a common matter and I just have to use it for longer period of time so it gets smoother?
The Hybrid Shooter I actually switched to the RP right after I responded to this video. I don’t do video so the full frame option was better for my needs. But I loved the G9
Have you done a video on the latest firmware update for the G9? If not, I hope you do in the future. I love your reviews. It sounds like there's a lot to love about it, including a very much improved auto-focusing.
@@TheHybridShooter I'm sorry to hear that. I still enjoy your videos, though. As I'm starting to get excited about using my G9 again and finally pulling it out of my bag after over a year of not using it, can I ask why you left the system?
Hey first i want to thank you for your very good and informative videos! Got my G9 some weeks ago and already loving it, but i recognized it needs some time to save shots (no matter what quality) before I can check them in camera. I'm using SanDisk Extreme PRO 64 GB SDXC normally. Tested it with faster ones as well. Still some micro seconds to long for me. I am used to take a photo and almost directly hitting the play button to check it. Sometimes the saving is to slow. Any problems with that as well or any ideas to fix that?
You're welcome, that happens with every camera, because the buffer has to be cleared if you shoot in burst. Do you have FW 1.2 installed? There was also lag when entering playback menu, which was fixed with FW 1.2
Hi! Me again. Seeing as how I can't afford a Panaleica after recently buying the G9 (and the fact that I already own the 12-40 2.8), I was wondering if you could give me you opinion on a more affordable (if slower, obviously) long lens for wildlife. I'd like to have 400mm Eqv. Or over, and keep it under $500 (as wildlife is not a money earner for me, therefore I can't justify the extra expense). Also, is the 40-150 variable aperture from Olympus decent enough? Cheers! Thank you!
I would say no, investing in M43 is not a good idea at the moment, especially not in long term. Take a look at my review of Fuji X-S10 / X-T4 or Sony cameras, depending on the budget.
I'm a fuji video shooter and now thinking of the X-T4 or the cheaper G9 with latest firmware. Having seen reviews of the fuji X-T4 the IBIS does not seem great. Would you say that the G9 is still a good choice over the X-T4 for filming events like weddings etc? Also, if you were to choose for video, would you take GH5 or G9?
I use the GH5 for video at the moment, I think that it is still the best all-round video camera, I will post new GH5 video today, that might help you decide.
Hello my friend! Thank you for another informative and useful review. I regret not buying the G9 a year ago when there was a great deal and it was in my budget. Also thanks for the occasional mention of how it performs in relation to the 16mp m43 cameras. Happy New Year from Australia 😊🎄🎆📷
I have g80 and recently got good few lenses. I only really shoot video for my own enjoyment. Found a good deal on g9 with the 12-60 kit (the better one) and now I am considering the move to this model instead of gh5. But is it the right move, investing in g9 purely for the video (given a bargain I got on it)?
Depends on whether you intend to use advanced features such as 4K DCI, 10-Bit recording, V-Log and unlimited recording. For video only I would probably still get the GH5.
how do the portraits come out on 50-200mm Leica lens? I was wondering if you could use that lens instead of a 42.5mm Leica, if say you're not planning on buying both of them at same time...
I have never used it for portraits, but it is good lens optically, so think it would be fine. 42.5 is completely different type of lens, so it depends on what you are looking for.
this may seem a bit petty but here goes...I have a g9 and a g80 with a 12-60 f2.8-4 lens on one and a 55-200 f2.8-4 on the other - i find working with a two camera set up like this so much more convenient than swapping lenses, especially of course when out in the landscape in all weathers...i would prefer to have two g9s of course, but if i stuck with my current set up, would there be, in your opinion, a preference as to which lens goes with which camera ?
i dont shoot wildlife or sports - i'm thinking landscapes (where i tend to go longer rather than wider) and cityscapes - i was thinking of the 55-200 on the g9 because of the relevant size ?@@TheHybridShooter
If you're shooting landscapes I would swap lenses onto the G9 for any scene without motion. High res mode is a game changer when the conditions are good, and there's absolutely no reason not to use it when it also produces a standard res image incase motion ruins the shot.
You say the 20Mp sensor noticeably increased dynamic range compared to the 16Mp sensor: could you clarify this statement? I own a GX9 and an Em5mkll and side by side on Affinity Photo I can't see any difference in details or dynamic range recovering underexposed or overexposed images (except for resolution): if possible I'd say the Oympus is a tad less noisy at high Iso.
When it comes to DR, everything depends on the scene. Differences are mostly visible in HDR scenes, like shown in the video, where the difference is significant in favor of new 20 mix sensor. G9 also has a bit better DR than GX9 because of different image processor.
You hit the nail on the head. A good 16Mp sensor is as good as the 20Mp for noise and dynamic range simply because it has lower pixel density, compensating for the fact that it is a lower Mp sensor. Swings and roundabouts.
@@TL-xw6fh No, there is a big difference between 16 mpix and new 20 mpix M43, because 20 mpix sensor uses much newer technology. G9 also has specific processing, which alone increases DR by 25% in comparison with GH5 which uses the same sensor.

Thank you🙏
2021 in torn between this a m1 mark 2 or fuji xa10 for portrait, street and documentary .
@@unbroken1010 I guess that you mean S-X10. That is best choice out of those three.
Thank you, I agree the handling is great on the G9.
@@TheHybridShooter There is one minor flaw, although perhaps it's just my model: the battery grip shows some play when I'm using heavier lenses. I feel like it should have two points of connexion. Apart from that, it's perfect :)
Yes that is truth, although it is not that bad IMO, I also wish the AF-ON button on grip was pleased more to the left.
And I'm thinking of grabbing an Olympus EM-10 mark ii for street photography now, as it's price has dropped so much.
4:56 - You are probably the only observer who shows real performance of autofocus for still images. Thanks a lot for that!
You're welcome, Panasonic still has bad reputation because of AF on GH4 and G85, but G9 and GH5 after FW updates really have good AF.
Hey, TT! Fancy seeing you here. Your XV/Panasonic road trips are loads of fun
Thank you for sharing you experiences with the G9!
Im not a fan of the size L, FX, and GM lenses. I have the panasonic 35-100 2.8 which js so small and super sharp.
Do you have somewhere we can see some of the images you took with the G9?
What lenses do you mainly use Ron?
@@pioneer7777777 Mainly 7-14 mm, 12-60mm, 20 mm, 45mm, 35-100 mm and .... the 'lowly' 14-140 mm (new type). To be honest, I am walking around a lot with the 14-140 mm. I might have been lucky, but my copy is performing fantastic. I borrow a 50-200 mm from a friend every now and then. That is a stellar lens.
Love the G9
Got one used last week for $1000 USD
Handling is amazing, image stabilization is amazing. Video is awesome. I’m sold on the m43
Picked up an open box G9 from an authorized Panasonic dealer 6 months ago for $1,045 on eBay, essentially was brand new, and I love it too. Got the 3-year warranty on it too.
I bought a G9 today. I got a great deal, so my timing is good. I appreciate your thoughtful reviews.
Thank you, I'm glad that my reviews were useful to you.
Yet another great video... It's impossible to not watch your videos to the end. So captivating!
Thank you, I appreciate your support!
Ya his watch time must be obscene
I have never enjoyed using a camera more than my G9 and GX9. The G9 is my go to camera all the time. My Nikon
810 is seldom used now and it feels old fashioned.
Thank you for sharing your experiences!
What a beautiful camera, just ordered mine, so thrilled :D ! THank you
You'll love it. I just got mine a few weeks ago after shooting Nikon for years and also having Olympus and Panasonic m43's.. this camera is SO far beyond the others. I am more film focused, so I believe it really checks all the boxes w/o breaking the budget. All the best!
Can we click pics too ??
I've had and used the G9 since April and can concur. The only downside is the difficulty connecting to a phone using the android app. It's confusing and clunky.
Ibis and hi Res modes are phenomenal. I loved using it in a recent trip to the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Handheld 1s exposures of waterfalls and the light weight made hiking with my 100-300mm lens a breeze.
Battery life was excellent and the fully articulated screen was also very useful for getting unique angles.
Thank you for sharing you experiences, smartphone app is indeed a pain to work with, but I only use it for geotagging.
@@TheHybridShooter I really wish they spent the extra few dollars on integrating an NFC chip like Sony to make pairing and launching the app much easier, simpler and faster.
@@bigdhav It's really weird how they went away from NFC with this camera. The GH4 has it and it connects so much easier.
If you cant afford this check the g85. Both are very good. G85 is noticeably smaller and just a fun camera. Having said that the g9 is a 10/10.
Love my G85 !
Unfortunately, my mic jack just went out on the G85. I've had the camera for two years, and loved it.
Hmm, now do you buy the G9 or the new SL1 or whatever they call it
The S1 is looking mighty fine. @@RustyZipper
@@RustyZipper I agree. SL1 isnt getting stellar reviews yet. Personally I feel it's still too early. Tony hates that its contrast detect only.
I also own a G9 and use it mostly with Panasonic 35-100 f2.8. I don't plan to upgrade for at least 3 years
Great 1-year summary review!
Agree! I love that you aren’t totally biased to one system like most RUclipsrs seem to be
I love both the A7iii and G9 ... own them both. Best of both worlds.
Just pointing out the only error you didn't correct, 13:35 you call the 42.5 Nocticron an f/1.4 instead of f/1.2. Outstanding and very concise long term update. Looking forward to the upcoming lens reviews.
Thank you, yes, that is a mistake.
You're welcome, thank you for sharing your experiences. I would definitely avoid using superglue.
Same here with the rubber. A design oversight.
Do you rinse it after the sea spray to wash away the salt, or do you think that's unnecessary?
Once the salt it dry I just rub it off with a soft cloth
@@sirlancelot3109 Thanks, I'll remember that :)
As a total package it's a no brainer (MANY will disagree!)
I doubt Panasonic can squeeze anything else from the M43 system though, so it'll be the S1 next...
13:28 - I'm still waiting for the test of the Monster Leica NOCTICRON 42.5 f1.2
I wish the a7iii had this body, it would change the game. Something I always loved about Panasonic cameras.
We might get that soon, I hope that Panasonic S1 will be A7 III with G9 body and GH5S video features.
@@TheHybridShooter I hope so as well!
@@TheHybridShooter Oh no, I can't afford a whole new set of lenses, please have mercy. But I agree, that sounds like a combo that would be hard to avoid.
On the plus side, it could be the last set of lenses that you will have to buy for a long time :)
How much will the S1 cost?
Thank you, more videos will be coming soon!
I used to do the same, but the Viltrox speed booster will give you better focal coverage and wider apertures. My Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 became an f/1.2 on my g85, which made it even better for portraits.
It’s 2023. I just ordered this camera. Can’t wait.
I don't think so, the colors fall apart at ISO 6400 unless it is very low DR scene.
Thank you for you feedback, I'm glad that my videos were helpful!
@@TheHybridShooter Most definitely!
Great review. Thanks for including info on how it does for stills as well as video.
You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Thanks.
Yes that is available on G9 but it is just sensor cropping, so it affects the image quality.
You will lose oversampling rate though, so it will still decrease image quality, but it should be good enough.
I agree. best camera I have ever owned. Image quality is good enough.
Výborne spracované video! Pokračuj v tom ďalej. :)
Ďakujem pekne!
Good unbiased review and I appreciate your comments on the 4/3 sensor performance.
Thank you, I appreciate your feedback!
I love my G9 so much. It is responsible for reigniting my passion for photography. I'm gonna get another one and start shooting weddings again.
It is the most underrated camera ever.
I used it equally for stills and video. I've started doing professional video work with it. It's a pleasure to work with.
I'm glad that you are happy with your G9!
Great review. Thanks so much. I’ve had my G9 for a couple of weeks, and just getting used to it. SO MUCH to learn.
Thank you, Panasonic actually has very good instruction manuals, so that might be useful as well as the AF guide.
Truly excellent work.
Thank you!
Yes, it seems like Panasonic didn't put much effort in marketing, so not many people know about the capabilities of the G9.
I think that the problem is that Panasonic was marketing this to professional reporters who have usually 10 000$ + invested in Canon / Nikon gear.
@@TheHybridShooter they failed at that if it's the case. Anyway, it's a hidden gem of a camera, and thanks to youtubers like you, the word is getting out. Looking for to see what Panasonic does with the FF mirrorless...
I updated my G7 to the G9. So far, so good! Thanks for the good reviews.
You're welcome, I'm glad that you like it!
Great video, thank you. I have had a G9 for around a year as well and like it a lot. My favourite lenses are the 35 to 100mm, 12-35mm and the 8-18mm. My only real grudge is the video limit of 30mins.
Is that limit just on the European models? The G85 has that limit in Europe but not in the US
I think it's also to stop the camera over heating. Unlike the gh5's they are designed to withstand heat as video is its primary focus.
4:2:2 10-bit video recording got added in a latest firmware update, so I realy think now it can pick it up with the GH5
Imo it's better (mostly because it's cheaper)
Terrific one year summary. I love my G9... You need to convince Casey with Camera Conspiracies to get the G9.

You're welcome, thank you for watching!
Both X-T3 and G9 are great cameras, probably my most favorite of 2018 as well, together with A7 III.
Expensive habit you have there!
Jay1 Tell me about it. Although I recycle the money from one system to the next I always end up loosing a few hundreds here and there.
@@FotosyMas. Can I ask how you liked the G9 as a direct comparison to the X-T3? And would you say the Leica 12-60mm lens is the perfect match for the G9 in most situations? Thanks!
@@paulhancock What I liked more on the G9 over the X-T3:
-Size and handling. Probably one of the best ergonomics I've ever seen on a camera.
-Better LCD with much better implemented touch interface
-Better menus
-TONS of creative options (6K photo, Stop-Motion, etc)
-Incredible IBIS up to 6.5 stops of stabilization
- The new Panasonic color science for both RAW and Jpegs is amazing. I would put it a notch over Fuji's which became my second favorite.
-HUGE and fast EVF with 0.83x magnification
-Even though X-T3 has more advanced video options for the serious videographer, I still find the video coming out of the G9 to be crisper, sharper, smoother.
-Much better battery life
-Image quality is on par with the Fuji up to ISO 3200. From that point on Fuji pulls ahead but not by much. I found that the Fuji has better shadow recovery, while the G9 has better highlight recovery.
-High resolution mode produces incredible stills
-Lens selection is great with many prime lenses and zooms to choose from
-Did I mention ergonomics? ;)
In regards to the 12-60mm Pana Leica I found it to be an excellent piece of glass.
To be honest, RP is by far the worst full frame camera... possibly ever, it is not very representative.
Thank you for sharing your experiences!
Very close to a G9 or EM1.2 purchase at the moment, cant quite decide as im moving from fuji to MFT but picking either or is a really difficult task right now!
Great video, I am at the point I need to consider upgrading my EM1.1. This G9 looks pretty good!
Thank you!
I second what he's saying about back button focusing. I use back button focusing on my G9, and I believe back button focusing is better IMO.
@@SamualWilliams I only switch to manual and bb focus if I need to, but the majority of my shots are focus/shoot, so usually I prefer to only need one button for that and I like the speed advantage of not having to wait for autofocus before pressing the shutter. Plus with the G9, switching the af mode is so easy.
at about 3:45 you talk about appreciating out of camera "cars", but I don't know what that is. I'd like to know though!

Great job on the 1 year recap! Definitely reassured me of my choice to stick with Lumix/Leica G-series MFT
Thank you!
Thanks for the review man! Question, would you use this camera for a wedding video?
Great video! It's nice to see someone do a review after a year of use...
Just a few things I'd like to reflect on:
* Color science.
Thank you for watching and sharing your experiences with G9!
Do a video on the new firmware update that makes it a $1000 GH5
Great video! Exactly all the info I was looking for
i have the same camera with leica 12-60 optics.
Thank you, I agree with that, I never said that M43 is necessarily suitable for everything.
Ideas? Thank you.
That is very difficult to tell, I have made a comparison on this channel. G9 is definitely a great deal at the moment.

I am currently in the process of buying a camera, but I don't know which one is better! I would only use it for video, and I don't know which would be the best! The sony A6400 or Fuji XT3 or the Panasonic G9! Maybe you could help me decide which would be the best choice?
Great review! I love the G9 so much :)
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. I need a good camera for landscape. This must be the one for me.
Does the electronic shutter reduce raw depth (bit)?
Like on old g7 and g80 where goes to 12bit to 10bit iirc with EC or EFC mode.
AT 4:32 Why limitation? It looks to me far far bettere than if the cars were frozed still as if all parked ...
It looks much worse to me, since it is very choppy.

wich lenses Do you recommend with this Beast For landscape and Macro
Thank you, will do my best to keep it up!
Nope, meant Celsius.
Is this a good beginner camera? I am planning to buy my first camera ever and I have no background in photography but with research for almost a month now I have a checklist which this camera almost completed but I am still quite hesitant. Any ways, your videos are really helpful and I would say very viewer friendly especially for someone like me. ☺️.
Thank you,I would say that it is very good all-round camera, with good UI, so it should be suitable for that.
Have you had the chance to try any Olympus lenses with the G9?
Regards
Rasmus

Still considering the G9 but too invested in Olympus lenses...
Many thanks for that... I will try to check if that may be a card issue and if not... let's hope for 1.3:) All the best!
And now even better with the recent upgrades.
You should try the Olympus 12-40 2.8. I absolutely love it!
I prefer Panasonic alternatives because of the DFD, dual IS and profile corrections.
I used that lens on a trip once and loved it. Just bought a G9 and that lens to give it a go again

Hello,
The G9 got a recent firmware update. If you still own it, can you make a video about it?
I don't have one anymore, so I unfortunately can't do that.
Cheers!
Thank you!
100-300 Panasonic is probably the best budget option in that case. I haven't tested Olympus 40-150, so I unfortunately can't tell you that.
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you!
Your panasonic lenses collection are dope
Thank you, unfortunately not all of those lenses are mine.
Is this still a good option in 2021? Considering that it is roughly 4 years already, will it hold good for at least 4 more years from now?
I would say no, investing in M43 is not a good idea at the moment, especially not in long term. Take a look at my review of Fuji X-S10 / X-T4 or Sony cameras, depending on the budget.
Didn't you have any problems with the rubbercoating on the cardslot door? On mine that is already comming lose and has expanded.
Thank you, happy new year to you as well!
The GH5 is being discounted here with low stock in some shops indicating a new GH6 is coming in 2019
No, the GH6 is definitely not coming in 2019. GH5 is not being discontinued either.
Thank you, it is unfortunate that G85 is not being updated for example.
@@TheHybridShooter got the G9 in the end. Might change to GH5 later.
how do the portraits come out on 50-200mm Leica lens? I was wondering if you could use that lens instead of a 42.5mm Leica, if say you're not planning on buying both of them at same time...
I have never used it for portraits, but it is good lens optically, so think it would be fine. 42.5 is completely different type of lens, so it depends on what you are looking for.
@@TheHybridShooter was talking about taking pictures of models
@@KingTut14 Yes, but that is very broad term.
this may seem a bit petty but here goes...I have a g9 and a g80 with a 12-60 f2.8-4 lens on one and a 55-200 f2.8-4 on the other - i find working with a two camera set up like this so much more convenient than swapping lenses, especially of course when out in the landscape in all weathers...i would prefer to have two g9s of course, but if i stuck with my current set up, would there be, in your opinion, a preference as to which lens goes with which camera ?
Depends on what you are shooting, for example if you are shooting wildlife or sports with 50-200mm I would use it on G9.
i dont shoot wildlife or sports - i'm thinking landscapes (where i tend to go longer rather than wider) and cityscapes - i was thinking of the 55-200 on the g9 because of the relevant size ?@@TheHybridShooter
If you're shooting landscapes I would swap lenses onto the G9 for any scene without motion. High res mode is a game changer when the conditions are good, and there's absolutely no reason not to use it when it also produces a standard res image incase motion ruins the shot.
great video, im am thinking of bying a g9. nice compact camera
