A lot of guys post camera tests on RUclips. 99% of them stay behind their desk or may be around there garden. As far as I know you are the only one who tests cameras in the worst conditions, with passion and professionalism. Warm congratulations and thanks. Concerning the G9, it made me change my mind. I used to buy FF. Currently for several reasons I use a GX8. But my next buy will certainly be this G9.
I don't recall seeing any videos where my eyes are just mesmerised by the beauty and clarity of Alberta. The grading is just absolutely phenomenal. This video is basically a moving desktop wallpaper.
I picked up this camera last week along with the LEICA 100-400. Oh boy, what a combo! I've been loving it. There is a lot of depth to this beast. I've been a Canon user for the past 10 years (professionally) and I have made the switch. I'm very excited.
This channel has always put out first-rate quality content, but lately especially it continues to improve even more with each video you guys put out. Fantastic review, set against a beautiful backdrop! Keep up the great work!
I got a GX85 (second hand) and soon a G85 appeared for sale (second hand also) and I missed it. After seeing this video I see I was lucky - I can build a small set of lenses and later, when someone travels to the US, get a G9 body. Very nice!!! Excellent video - these guys know their stuff and are entertaining!
I love the fine tuning they are putting into this camera. Setting the stabilizer down to the decimal, allowing adjustment of how many of the frames are allocated to before pressing the shutter button in pre burst, choice to save a single photo also while doing high res. etc. Just awesome.
You should know that the shutter button sensitivity is adjustable in the menus. It has an option to have half-button release on or off. Turn it off and you have a normal shutter button.
Exactly, I shoot the long lenses with G9 and I keep it in burst mode all the time. The hair-trigger shutter, allows for super fast and smooth bursting without any jerk of the camera. Takes some getting use-to, and with Back Button focus, the hair trigger is a great tool to have.
Great review guy's. I've been using the g9 for about a month. And i love it. So thanks for sharing. I also use the Panasonic gx8. sony a7mk2 after moving from my Nikon D750 to mirrorless system and I've not looked back. All 3 of these cameras were reviewed by you and that made my mind up so big thumbs up guy's. Love your work shared on here 👍👍👍👍
Great review. This review made my mind up about getting this camera. I received mine yesterday and I'm blown away at how good this camera is. Thanks for sharing with us your views on this.
Excellent review of the Panasonic G9, thanks. Being a Canadian living in Australia, I do at times miss the winter landscapes of home... Except for the -20C temperatures!
I was lucky enough to be at the same spot (Barrier Lake, Kananaskis Country) the day after you guys shot this. Wonderful spot, can't wait to go back in the summer. Your hard work is much appreciated, lads.
Great video as always. I really like the point toward the end about the ergonomics making it a solid photographer's camera. Good grips and a lot of direct control on cameras make a big difference in the field.
I'm not a fan of your in-store Talking-Heads videos, and more recently have been passing on notification of TheCameraStoreTV videos. So, I was glad to see with the Pana G9 that you guys chose to return to high value (more about the camera and less goofing) well done field test and evaluation of a really well done outdoor test. This video demonstrates why I came to this channel years back. Joe Desjardins was icing on the cake, although I wish he'd given a final evaluation of the 4/3's camera pros & cons for his kind of photography. Thanks again, a job well done.
TCS reviews in the Rockies are the best! Great job guys. I had a chance to shoot with the G9 and 200 for a few minutes outside our local camera store. The closest EVF to optical I've ever used. One heck of a camera/lens combo.
G9 is really a mighty camera! It can shoot both stills and videos very well. It is a bit heavy for a m43 camera but will balance well with your heavier lenses. However, one thing I find frustrating is the autofocus in video mode. The focus will hunt around even when just I sit or stand still. I learnt to manual focus though so it is not that big of a problem right now. I really love the camera and feel like it is a perfect fit for me! I just did a review on my channel as well.
What I really like so far about the G9 (especially compared to the Olympus em-5 & em-1): no (or limited) blackout + direct access through dials to the AF & drive modes, dedicated iso, wb, etc buttons. In other words, I don’t have any more memory issues when picking the G9... I'm in love with the ergonomic of this camera. Cheers from Montréal, where we do have the snow, but those magnificent mountains!
I really like where Panasonic is going with there G Camera line MFT camera system. From the Gh4 or 5, the G9 for stills , and now the GH5s with it's low light capabilities gives great versatility on a grand scale. What I think we all want to see now is a line of new "FAST PRIME LENSES" in the f1.0 range that are small, light, weather sealed, portable, and most of all affordable :)
A nicely produced and informative video. Considering a G9 to back up my GH5 and to use as a stills camera. There are pros and cons to MFT, but I also have full frame cameras and unless I really need wall sized prints or I'm shooting over 3200 ISO my hand will always reach for the GH5. If I need even bigger prints I default to my antique 5x4 Linhof and get my hands wet! Unlike some respondents, I don't have tracking or autofocus problems with the GH5: it's a simple fix and I'm surprised that Panasonic haven't dealt with it in firmware. Lovely pictures by Joe Desjardins, by the way.
Great review, beautiful footage. I know G9 is mainly a Photography camera, but I wish the video usage review was more in-depth, since it is very capable.
Photographer's camera my ass. Mic input, headphone output, decent pre-amps, full HDMI connector with 4K output at 30 FPS in 8-bit 4:2:2 format, 60 FPS, Slow Motion, 5-axis Dual IBIS, 2 card slots, flip screen, bigger battery and USB power. Guys you don't understand! This is the budget GH5 we have all been waiting for. Panasonic made this camera for video, not photo. For photo, they will be releasing their Full Frame line this year. Just think about it!
It's obv it's a photo camera first with capable video features for enthusiasts since video is limited to 10 and 30 min for 4k60 and 4k30 respectively and since they skimped out on other shooting modes and professional video features. The heat sink and build design is made to support high burst rates for photos instead of dissipating heat during hot 4k video recording so no I don't agree with you.
Awesome review, and as you said, what an occasion! That snow and ice is gorgeous. Makes me feel like a wimp shooter when I shirk a day outside because it’s a little cool or wet. Awesome video, and amazing photographs. I always learn something, every time you shoot landscapes.
great video, a lot more different than the most of the hands on, guys! Not a fan of the bokeh on the 200mm panny though. I wonder if the next closest Olympus looks any better?
Fantastic video shot in some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. I am keen to try the Panasonic G9, but not sure if it will handle my low light sports work. For everything else I shoot it's going to be ideal... Thanks for a fabulous, concise and to the point review guys! You highlighted all the areas of this camera's capabilities that I wanted to know more about. Very much appreciated.
I would love to see the low light. You guys may have sold me on this because it has so much appeal in terms of size (for travel) and lens selection. I am between this and the a7iii. There is just a dearth of lens selection for the alphas and the size of the alphas is great but the FF glass is still huge. I love the look of the om-d e-m1 mkii, but this seems so feature-rich for the price. DECISIONS!!
Wonderful review, thank you for this, it helped me confirm that I will be upgrading my Nikon D7000 to the G9 I travel a good bit and have found I used my Nikon less lately. The Lumix will be much easier to carry all day long and will be a good upgrade from the D7000
Great hands on, your videos are always well balanced and are never just gushing over the latest tech. The G9 looks like an excellent camera, I love what Panasonic are doing at the moment. I'm just moving from a Fuji X-T20 to a G80, so perhaps a G9 could come my way when the price drops! The ergonomics on the Panasonic G80/G85, GH5 and now G9 are excellent if a little boring. The look of the Fuji cameras is great but for me the handling just isn't there. Putting a 18-135 on a X-T20 was awful. It handled well when I had a 35 f2 but anything much larger just wasn't comfortable. That and the fact that the G80 has IBIS and weather sealing made the switch easy.
This camera is getting more popular with video shooters and I wish you'd did a bit more on the video side of things. For example the AutoFocus in video is from what I've seen head and shoulders above the GH5 cameras especially tracking. Couple that with the superb IBIS and the Cinelike profiles for just a hair over £1000 on eBay NEW and it sounds like a great deal. My one small gripe about Panasonic is, I do wish the lenses were cheaper. I know for a professional photographer the price of these lenses aren't that big a deal but for us mere mortals although excellent they still are a little pricey. I'm talking about the mark 2 lenses that you can use the dual image stabilization with. I'm not a professional photographer but I am a keen film maker and £600 for a lens is a big pull out for me.
Awesome review Chris and Jordan (as usual). I love what I'm seeing with the new G9, so I'm now selling my G85 with kit lens, and throwing in 3 G85 batteries and an Alturo sling bag. Then I can purchase the new G9. Where would the best place be for me to sell my G85??
Good video, thanks a lot. I was hoping you were going to assess the autofocus and tracking for some birds in flight. The only reason I would change my EM1.2 for a G9 is if it is significantly better for birds and insects in flight. Mind you, if it comes close to my D500 for BIF I might change that and keep my EM1.2. The weight saving would be worth it for me - the PanaLeica 100 - 400mm is so much lighter than my Nikkor 200 - 500mm f5.6.
timzanation. Thanks for your input. From the reviews I have viewed I agree. I will not be changing either my D500 or EM1 mark II anytime soon: especially following the recent EM1.2 update.
Cant wait to see a gh5s review. The skin tones in this one look a litte too pink I thought, but then again it was cold so... I would have loved if you guys had touched a little more on the video function even though its mostly supposed to be a foto camera. But with its better dr and out of camera color than the g85 and better autofocus than the gh5 plus headphone jack this could really be a great youtube tool.
I have been just sitting and waiting, I'm looking at Panasonic, Fuji and Olympus and reading all the reviews and videos. There is no hurry for me at this time because I have two Nikons, D750, and a D500, but I will be looking at buying one of these options in the near future. Mirrorless cameras are the future.
Finally! :) Great video! Thank you! I have some questions: What can you say about the pincushion effect on the G9 EVF? It's a software problem? Would an update solve this problem? Thank you!
Hi Chris, I enjoy your commentary on G9. I would like your opinion on using the OIS. Specifically, do you believe OIS should be switched off when using a tripod? I hear many claims that OIS should be switched off, but I cannot find a reliable reason for that, or if it really applies to the Lumix/Leica OIS lenses. Is the rule different for stills vs video? Keep up the good work!
Excellent question. IME using the G9 as my main camera for over 3 years, it all depends on what you're trying to capture and how you plan to do it. With super-tele shooting 4K video anything over 280mm should be mounted on mono or tripod for usable 4K. And having DUAL IS2 on with in-camera Digital Stabilization on is a must if you're touching the lens and camera to pan and zoom while filming anything using the Ex Tele Con feature shooting over 300mm. As for photo, you can turn it off or leave it on while snapping single shots. Nevertheless, most of this is impacted by the skills and techniques of the photographer. Thus, with Lumix G9 the DUAL IS2 can be used while on a tripod. HOWEVER, if you're going to shoot long exposures or use the HighResolution feature of G9, it's best to turn the DUAL IS2 off while shooting on the tripod. For example, Long exposure night shots using fast primes like 15mm f/1.7 for milky way night sky landscape panoramas, where 10 to 13 sec exposures are being shot for auto stitch. Also, when shooting any time-lapse sequences while static or on a slider. The Dual IS is best turned off to eliminate the drifting/shifting of subject in the final video playback. So, as you can see, there are many types of shooting conditions using the Lumix G9, with various exposures and lenses, with various camera features. So to really understand and know the limits of Lumix G9's capabilities, is one of trial and error in various conditions, using various features. Hope you find this helpful.
so, you're amazed that it can go from -10°C to +10°C in one day in the mountains donc come to the French Alps then ! on some locations in spring or autumn, you can get 0°C or a bit below to about 30°C in late afternoon.
I am a bit skeptical about your positive bias regarding the G9 performance, especially as you are essentially stating it can compete with a pro DSLR like a Canon 1DX. As a user of Panasonic cameras lenses for several years I know the pitfalls, one of the main ones being the AF speed and accuracy. I have simply missed wildlife shots (small erratic moving birds) using my G80/85 & the Pana 100-300mm lens. At one point I could not get the camera to focus on a bird perched on a branch even in good lighting (which was to my back). It was so frustrating! I do like using my G80 most of the time even more than my Nikon DSLR but my D600 still keeps churning out great images and I trust the AF to nail the shot, which it does.
I own GH5 and G9. I like G9. 2 minor complaints: G9 shutter button is toooooo sensitive. I am shooting too many shots accidentally .. turning on or off the power button and when I am trying to 1/2 press shutter to focus. I also do not like shooting mode dial on left side. I like it to be on the right side (I am right handed) like GH5 so I can hold the lens / camera with left hand and adjust the control dial while holding grip with right hand.
The Panasonic G9 is a great camera & does have significant size advantages most notably with larger lenses opposed to other system with larger sensors. However I must say I would never sell any of my Nikon, Canon or Fuji gear for one , never ever my D850 & Trinity! That said the G9 is looking seriously good as the option for my Africa trip & even if Sony does add longer telephoto, how would it match the size & balance Panasonic has achieved & Olympus too! Seriously impressed what can I say.
Oh, I love that snowy country side. What I would be interested in to know: Does the teleconverter, which came out with the 200mm lens, also work with the 100-400mm ?
It's got some features I'd love in the G85, and some I wouldn't use. No panorama but you can jump to software for that easy enough. If there's no successor to the G85 at Photokina I think this is where I'll be going next...
I love the Hands-On Field Tests from Chris Nichols. That said I think TheCameraStoreTV should take in mind that most of the people who watch these reviews are just amateurs who want to know how a new model with the kitlens performs. What use is it to show stills and movies shot with lenses that costs 3 times more than the body? Everyone knows that a 1.4 is far better glass than a kitlens starting 3.5 ! So please give us reviews with simple kitlenses. If these results are reasonable, we know that buying additional better lenses can only result in better shooting. Anyway, his reviews are real jems.
Thanks for the review. I’m an Oly user...it is too bad that Panosonic is deciding to make proprietary connections between lenses and body. I would consider this as a body but have a full complement of Oly lenses. Outside of that, looks like a great camera.
I can get a clean used copy for 600€ and am seriously considering it. Other Contenders are the A6400, but damn the controls are limited and a G91, but the autofocus kind of makes me question if it is good enough, even tho I like the body more.
I am very interested in the burst viewfinder experience of the G9 versus the Olympus M1.2 for mechanical shutter high speed burst in the 9 to 12 fps speed range for shooting runners, soccer players, and skateboarders. What was said about the G9 shaky viewfinder experience bothers me. I don't just want good results. I want an enjoyable shooting experience. I am a tactile person who cares about how the knobs look and work and how the camera feels and looks in operation. Which camera has the better experience? Does the viewfinder black out? Is the viewfinder more or less of a live view experience? Does the viewfinder show the current focus point group or focus point used positions? My Olympus M1.1 at 9 fps mechanical shutter shows the last picture taken, without indicating the location of the focus point. I would prefer more of a live few experience with visible focus points.
Chris and Jordan this is SUCH a nice review and video!! Can you tell me if this camera also has the same Olympus feature as Live Composite for time exposures where you can see the time exposure on the screen and stop it when you feel it has the correct look to it. And what do you think of that feature? Please let me know! Thanks. Jerry Eisner
A lot of guys post camera tests on RUclips. 99% of them stay behind their desk or may be around there garden.

15:36 Impressive winter balance skills right there.
Joseph Hinkle I think he sneaked in a few dance moves on the ice.
I think its funny how there's no stress in his voice at all and his legs are doing spagetti moves, haha!
who else read white balance skills?
Simply the best camera review channel on RUclips. Period. Thanks for all the effort you make to produce interesting video like that.

I'm always very jealous of the marvellous wildlife and weather you guys get in Canada.
Wow, what beautiful scenery.
Great scenery! Also, colour grading is on point!
Great review guy's. I've been using the g9 for about a month. And i love it. So thanks for sharing. I also use the Panasonic gx8. sony a7mk2 after moving from my Nikon D750 to mirrorless system and I've not looked back. Great review. This review made my mind up about getting this camera. I received mine yesterday and I'm blown away at how good this camera is. Thanks for sharing with us your views on this.
I think its great there are so many good choices for us today, it really is the age of super cameras with so many advanced performance features!
I’m havin a blast with my Canon 6D in 2018.
Panasonic is really doing well in photography especially now they came up with the G9 which is an impressive sport and wildlife camera for sure.
some lovely landscapes! thanks for the effort and the sharing. coming from a g7, the idea of the g9 is very tempting. thumbs up.
Beautifully shot video.
Excellent review of the Panasonic G9, thanks. Being a Canadian living in Australia, I do at times miss the winter landscapes of home... Except for the -20C temperatures!
Like always, excellent episode guys.
Shoot out! Oly em 1 mk2 vs Panasonic G9!
Great video and review, keep it coming.
Agreed. I'd like to see that too.

The two of you should just piggyback a travel show onto these. You deserve way more subscribers than 300k!! I’d watch you guys talk about anything!
What an awesome scenery for this video!
TCS reviews in the Rockies are the best! Great job guys. I had a chance to shoot with the G9 and 200 for a few minutes outside our local camera store. The closest EVF to optical I've ever used. One heck of a camera/lens combo.

Cheers from Montréal, where we do have the snow, but those magnificent mountains!
Cool video and walk through. Panasonic is really making some cool stuff! I’m torn between the GH5 or the G9
Thanks bros very clear on that i make up my mind getting the g9 after watching multiple reviews on it.
I really like where Panasonic is going with there G Camera line MFT camera system. From the Gh4 or 5, the G9 for stills , and now the GH5s with it's low light capabilities gives great versatility on a grand scale. For photo, they will be releasing their Full Frame line this year. color grading is spot on , awesome review folks
color grading is playing with colors and creating cinematic looks :)
Awesome review, and as you said, what an occasion! That snow and ice is gorgeous. Makes me feel like a wimp shooter when I shirk a day outside because it’s a little cool or wet. Awesome video, and amazing photographs. I always learn something, every time you shoot landscapes.

Your usual thorough hands on review. The G9 looks very good.
Best G9 field test by far.
Not for me, but an impressive camera nonetheless and one of the best Camera Store reviews I’ve ever seen. 👏🏼
This camera is getting more popular with video shooters and I wish you'd did a bit more on the video side of things. very honest and good reviews. Thanks a lot. I know why this is one of favourite Photography channels. Love your work. Thanks a lot man !
The speed of video autofocus was severely dependent of the frame rate in older models. How about the G9?
Awesome review guys! Really enjoyed the location too!
Amazing video quality. This is def a step up.

Nothing that I have seen makes me think that the G9 will be better than the M1 Mark II for continuous autofocus burst mode for birds in flight.
timzanation.
I have been just sitting and waiting, I'm looking at Panasonic, Fuji and Olympus and reading all the reviews and videos. There is no hurry for me at this time because I have two Nikons, D750, and a D500, but I will be looking at buying one of these options in the near future. Mirrorless cameras are the future.
sid vicious Wait for mirrorless Nikon
We need the G10 & GH6 soon, MFT is in dire need of a sensor refresh
Awesome scenery!
nice hardware mate I dig the view finder
so, you're amazed that it can go from -10°C to +10°C in one day in the mountains
donc come to the French Alps then ! on some locations in spring or autumn, you can get 0°C or a bit below to about 30°C in late afternoon.
Stunning location. Great review.
Lovely review!
Excellent video!
Still liking it? Did you get used to the shutter?
Excellent review! Thank you.
Awesome review, very helpful
The Panasonic G9 is a great camera & does have significant size advantages most notably with larger lenses opposed to other system with larger sensors. However I must say I would never sell any of my Nikon, Canon or Fuji gear for one , never ever my D850 & Trinity! That said the G9 is looking seriously good as the option for my Africa trip & even if Sony does add longer telephoto, how would it match the size & balance Panasonic has achieved & Olympus too! Seriously impressed what can I say.
Great video guys! I've reeally enjoyed mine thus far.
Great review! . Thanks for your " shot on Panasonic GH5S" on description, but what lenses did you use?. Thanks for such a beauty landscape.
Oh, I love that snowy country side.
What I would be interested in to know: Does the teleconverter, which came out with the 200mm lens, also work with the 100-400mm ?
don't think so
It's got some features I'd love in the G85, and some I wouldn't use. No panorama but you can jump to software for that easy enough. If there's no successor to the G85 at Photokina I think this is where I'll be going next...
Jordan needs to do another review. CHECK OUT THE G9 V2 FIRMWARE UPDATE!!!
10bit 422.
HLG.
Upgradable to V-Log L
I love the Hands-On Field Tests from Chris Nichols. That said I think TheCameraStoreTV should take in mind that most of the people who watch these reviews are just amateurs who want to know how a new model with the kitlens performs. What use is it to show stills and movies shot with lenses that costs 3 times more than the body? Everyone knows that a 1.4 is far better glass than a kitlens starting 3.5 ! So please give us reviews with simple kitlenses. If these results are reasonable, we know that buying additional better lenses can only result in better shooting.
Anyway, his reviews are real jems.
All that snow! All we get here (England) is rain lol
You have to be a southerner ...Got snow on my door step ;D
$12000 worth of cameras in a $200 car.
bill M 😂😂😂😂
Well, with proper maintenance the car can outlast those cameras, easily.
You don't have to replace the internals of the camera every year
You don't have to replace the internals of a car every year either.
should see me carry my gear on my motorcycle. EXTRA padded bag
Thanks for the review. I’m an Oly user...it is too bad that Panosonic is deciding to make proprietary connections between lenses and body. I would consider this as a body but have a full complement of Oly lenses. Outside of that, looks like a great camera.
That shot at 8:28 is phenomenal!
If you would compare this camera with the G85/G80.. is it worth the extra €1000,- ?
You have tested them both.. im curious about your opinion. :)
FrietjeM i doubt about the g80-85 and the g9 its a 12-60 2.8 for free.
Great video.... G9 or Nikon D500 for fast action sports?
What a great review :)
Beautiful
felt in love with my G7, however, its Video AF was really bad, how is that in the G9? Jordan didnt mention much about video AF performance.
A nice review. Thanks.
Great video as usual tho I will suggest when you put links in descriptions to always add in the beginning so that mobile users can easily access them.
Silent shutter is great for weddings and for shooting stills and your photography buddy makes film you do not hear the shutter from another camera.
I think the ergonomics are better on the G9. I wish they used the G9's handgrip for the GH5/GH5S.
Great review! I want!!!
Great detail and dynamic range. What camera was used to shoot this review? Also what profile was used and what grading?
Super helpful video
Thanks for video. i was waited for it. But what about comparing this cam with fuji xt-2? it has bigger sensor , good amount of lenses ...
Went back to this video after listening to the Ted Forbes/Chris Nichols interview. Was not disappointed.
watch that ice! beautiful country... Calgary?
