You have so many more options in Photoshop, so I would use that program instead. You could also image trace the PNG for more options in Illustrator: ruclips.net/video/gyLSZIbXI0g/видео.html

It's hard to know what's going on without seeing the image. Do you have Photoshop?

I would keep them in the same format they already are in, so most likely JPG.

You can only use Recolor Artwork with vectors, so you'll need to make your PNG file a vector first (see video below). A better option is to use Photoshop, honestly. ruclips.net/video/gyLSZIbXI0g/видео.html

It sounds like you need to select the transparency option in the PNG save dialog box. :)

I think people just wanted to be able to quickly change colors in Illustrator, so they added the feature. It's just added raster functionality.

Use this method (video) but use the grayscale version. You can make the white black that way.
