The idea of an onscreen display on an Oculus Iris first occurred to me when I first started my career as an aircraft engineer 30 years ago. This Oculus Quest 2 doesn't seem particularly practical to use in the shower.

    Good information, good video!
I am myself a little split between Quest 2 and HP reverb G2, G2 having better resolution and comfort but are not out yet, and quest 2 which are already out, have a good price, controllers and are wireless. Also there are alot more reviews/information about the Quest 2, comparing to the G2, which is not out yet.
Im actually waiting for the G2, but im thinking about cancelling the order and getting a quest 2 instead, thinking about price and all.

Looking at the specs it seems like the G2 comes out ahead for the screens and lenses, but it’s only for PC VR, right? No onboard apps and games?

@@DaveLinger It seems like it only pc vr. Not sure though what you mean with no apps and games. Maybe there are some apps, either on windows store or steam.
I think most people using PC VR are doing so for the games, and only games, and for that there are again windows store, or the more popular choice, steam.
Sorry if my grammer seems weird, English is not my main language.

Note: I myself play mostly games, and that is that perspect I have when it comes to VR.
My point is, there are maybe more apps out there on pc vr, which are non-games, but I have little to no knowledge about those apps!

Yes absolutely I just mean that with the quest 2 you can play games without a PC, which is not an option with the G2, right?

@@DaveLinger Oh you meant like that!
Yes you need a pc of some kind, either a laptop or a desktop, otherwise it will not work.

Isn't it impressive how the Virtual Desktop is SO better at playing PCVR titles than Oculus Link? On Link all colors are washed out w/ no true black, the resolution and compression are no good. If I tried to use the native resolution through SteamVR for Half Life: Alyx the performance was awful, fpsVR would show 99% GPU utilization! Seriously I tried lowest in-game settings at native resolution, no dice. Eventually lowered my render resolution to 1440x1600, no better than my Samsung Odyssey Plus, and it was still an inferior experience to the Samsung HMD. So I tried Virtual Desktop a few days ago, there was a learning curve to fine tuning the settings and the resolution was still blurry in SteamVR, though this issue was solved by opting out of SteamVR BETA. Now Half Life: Alyx is performing 90hz, set to native resolution, color enhanced, and using Nvidia optimized graphics. No way around video compression but when you don't have to run a game on playdoh graphics it's less noticeable. Oculus Link is still in Beta, and yes it is a high quality cable, but $80 for a much inferior experience? I'm just surprised by Oculus/Facebook's short coming with Link, an indie dev has achieved more success with Virtual Desktop.
Note: At first I thought maybe my GPU can't handle the compression method Link uses, since fpsVR always showed 90%+ GPU Utilization. Now seeing that Virtual Desktop has no problem performing and uses avg 70% GPU, it can't be my 1070 Ti
    My Rig:
    GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor
    32GB DDR4

Thanks for the info! Thankfully I didn’t have to adjust my game settings either way to play alyx on link or VD; ryzen 9 3900x and RTX 3080. I am hoping they update Oculus Link for 90hz and better color and resolution. It should be better than wireless, as you say.

@@DaveLingervery nice getting your hands on that RTX 3080 B-)
Once Link comes out of beta you should definitely try some kind of comparison video! And I always notice when other RUclipsr's have tested HLA with Link and Virtual Desktop they play like Chapter 2 in the Subway, or a custom sandbox level. When I tried my Link for the first time, I loaded to my last save on Chapter 9. Starts with combat section fighting Antlions and Combine, this is where the game chugs! During this section I experienced framerate drop with Virtual Desktop as well, dipping from 90 to 70 fps, where as Link is dipping from 72 to 30fps. Maybe try this yourself, make a new game save and start on Chapter 9 just to see what your performance is like.

@@logankolhoff1387 Actually I haven't progressed any further than the chapter you see in the video! This was only recorded a matter of days ago (and a matter of days since I got the headset), so I haven't had a lot of time to get further. But once I get to the later chapters I will come back and let you know what I find in terms of performance, if I can remember!
