    This is iconic here in south african and was kept in production till 2008/2009. It has a strong following with farmers, drifters, drag racers...in fact almost everyone loves them here!!

    I saw this video 6 years ago when it was first posted and it awakened my love for old JDM vehicles, and the Datsun Sunny will forever be stuck in my mind. Cars like this are the reason we deal with back-breaking seats, hard-to-find parts, old slow motors and every quirk and gremlin that hangs around. I don't think cars will ever have this personality ever again or invoke the same feeling of adoration from their owners. Thanks for taking this truck out for a spin and sharing the experience with us, Alex.

    In South Africa, the "sunny" pickup was initially the Datsun 1200 then it got a 1400 engine until the end of production in 2007!! The drag racing guys love them here and they're the perfect workhorse for a small business -also why it was one of the most stolen cars throughout its life up to the present day

    My dad used to have this truck when I was kid in the Philippines back in '96 and I remember him babying it. We went back there a few years ago, found the exact car he had back then and restored it to its former glory. We were able to bond over this truck and for that, I'm forever grateful. This baby is such a joy to drive, I just wish I had the money to ship it over to Toronto so we can both see it in our driveway. Strictly summer driving though haha.

    my grandpa had bought one in red in 1980. It was passed on to my father who is now in his 70's and this death on wheels is still going at 44 years old. The last 5 years it basically exists for the one time each year anyone in the family needs a pick up. I need it to carry 4 truck beds of wood 30 kms away this fall. I'm sure it will give me 4 thrilling rides as it always does. I'm gonna be a little sad when something really expensive on it breaks and it meets its grave.

    That truck is actually fun if you... Of course like many JDM, mod it up. That engine is anemic. Just get a SR20DET from any S15 or S14, polish it up, upmap the ECU and to just about 350bhp that thing could move. The suspension feels wobbly like any old car thus just change of brakes and suspension and everything will fly. It takes parts from the old Bluebird 510 so there should be tons of aftermarket parts still floating around.
    Oh and you're asking about Hakosuka ain't ya? That's easy. If you translate it back to English it just means "Short box" Halo is "Box" in Japanese and Suka is "Short" in Japanese thus if you combine both it just means that it's a short box and the KPC10 GTR is called that because it's short and quite boxy in it's design.

I love watching someone behind get that inquisitive look on their face like "oh what's that, nvr seen one of those.....wait...where the driver" then you see the face go from inquisitive to the "oh shit" and they start pointing and smiling.

    I remember these from when I was a kid...both the ute (pickup) and the sedan. They were slow from the factory, but being so light, they could be tweaked to get up and go pretty well (for the time - I'm still talking about the mid '70s here.) Many were turned into poor man's rally machines - for those who couldn't afford the Datsun 510 - and they didn't do badly at all. And btw, it does have traction control - by never having enough power to break traction. That's how it controls your traction. LOL

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 7 лет назад

      PS: In Australia, it was just called the Datsun 1200 - we didn't get the "Sunny" nameplate on these models (that I recall, anyway - it's been a while.) Same with the Datsun 510 - to us, it was simply a Datsun 1600. :-)

    It pisses me off that we don't get things like this in the US. Cause there are quite a few Utes & small trucks that would probably do very well here. I really love the sun burst on the tailgate.

    I still have my subscription feed tab open from before the diesel video was removed. In 18 minutes, it's dislike to like ratio was a whopping 50/50. I wonder why they took it down? :)

    if you want to see this pickup truck in their environment you have to go to the almost dead mountain villages in Greece, this thing has a nest over there. It is the most common vehicle for 80 years old shepherd and most of them are serviced with oil paint and tie rap

    Datsun 1200 utes (and please: ute, not "pickup truck", it's a chopped up sedan not a truck) are not that uncommon in Australia.
    There's 8 for sale right now: www.carsales.com.au/car/datsun/ute-bodystyle/?area=Stock&vertical=car&WT.z_srchsrcx=makemodel& I think they will nearly all be Australian-delivered, not JDM imports.
