  • Larry Chen attended the GT-R Festival in Australia and came across a very special build that is the brainchild of a pizzeria owner. In the 18 years Larry has been shooting car photography, he has never seen something this insane or unique. It's a 1985 Datsun Ute powered by a 2015 Nissan VR38 GTR motor with a one-of-a-kind turbo setup and fuel tank system.

In South Africa we call them "bakkies" and the 120 Datsun is one of the OG's here. Later it was updated with a 1400cc motor, square headlights and finally a 5 speed box. They are considered indestructible. He would not be able to drive 1km here without someone stopping him and making an offer. Until eventually he would just be hijacked.

I love engine swaps into things unexpected but cool and this is right there at the top for me. You can see how much the owner just loves the Ute. He did it exactly how he wanted it done and worked around issues with ingenuity. Plus I love those old imports. They just never had power and with so many options today, it is great to see what motivated people dream up. Great pick Larry. More like these please.

I knew a guy who had a 520 1300 back in the 70's. I drove it many times. Seemed the more heavy-footed I drove it the slower it went. It ran better with a light foot feeding throttle gently after upshifts. Probably carb issues, but that's my main memory of the vehicle. Learned to drive a stick with that 520.
