There are no better car channels than this. Larry is a car guy talking to real car people. No one reading spec sheets, real explinations of the reason behind the madness, and shows the passion these people have for their machines. Another cool build. Thanks, Larry.
Larry doesn't know the original HP of an NA-Miata... He's a Motorsport Fotografer, not a Motosport Journalist (and neither is he a Rocket Scientist). But he's very committed to what he does.
Good point on brakes. That's the reason why modern racecars and hypercars have wheels larger than 20" - just to provide massive braking capacity. With 15" wheels you're simply limited what brakes can do. ✌️
Ol dude should start his own asmr channel of straight motor talk and car builds... He'd easily get the audience to monetize and have every means to do whatever build he wants, and all us guys would love to go to sleep hearing about those builds...lol... such a charismatic motorhead! One thing that was said that summed it all up: Larry: One question.......why don't you turn it down to 500hp? Owner: No Way..........No way...... Thats like asking somebody with a Dodge Demon to not rev past 3k rpm...No....because RACECAR
this genuinely is one of the coolest cars you've featured imo. it's as grassroots as it gets. isn't it amazing where technology and a bit of do-diligence can get you?! that's a 4 cylinder engine from a front wheel drive minivan probably. and some parts from the wreckers, some fancy electronic gizmos and gadgets, you now have a competitive mx5. quite possibly the fastest in the world
Hondas minivans have J series v6's.. Those K series 4 cyl however came in almost every other vehicle honda made except the minivans and Suvs. The "CUV"/ mini suv's got them. Not the big boys though. The J series however is legendary when cared for. Million miles or more, Easy. Lots of youtube videos about it. Also, thats a lot of parts from custom makers, as well as self designed. Some might be from scrap yard, but the majority are high end expensive parts. Dry sump, Water pump relocation, Alternator delete, Not things you are going to find at your local scrap yard.
i couldnt call it competitive when it breaks down on lap two. i respect the owner's approach and effort and that this is super fun and all, but this car will continue to break unless you do it the right way (i.e. the financially unfeasable way).
@@philaoki you'd be surprised where persistence can get you mate. give him another 12-18 months to sort out the kinks and it'll be a weapon, can see its still in its early stages here. im building a stupidly fast car right now and it owes me MAYBE 5 grand australian
K series is a performance engine ground up tho. there is an economy version and performance version economy one is just dailed back and missing vtec on one of the cams. also a k24 at 10,000 rpm has a higher piston speed than any superbike or f1 car ever made because of its 99mm stroke which is the same as a dodge viper LOL
This dude and his team took it way beyond what the mainstream miata guys are at. Most definitely, my goals. Can't imagine what an Elmer Racing Thor engine 2000hp will do to a miata. Gonna need to run crazy wide tires like the ones on the 917 Can-Am-Killer. Most definitely an awesome Mazda Miata coverage , Boss Chen 👍🏼🤙🏽
Wow Larry I'm sure you have heard this many times. But you're a legend and I want to thank you for all your hard work and dedication! Heavy into the car scene, I hope to meet you one day! 💯
This is so cool and the pain this guy has been through to make it this far is something I know all too well. Fantastic. Would love to meet sometime. Oh and Amen to the 1350 joint... been there done that. Also, If you (the owner/driver) ever need help with anything don't hesitate ...
I don’t know if people realize that the equivalent power to weight of this car compared to other cars is anywhere from 1600-2000hp equivalent of other platforms.
Great and crazy. Love when owners/drivers are knowledgeable, experienced and passionate a pleasure to listen to. This cars needs a LOT of work, i mean the wiring, routing and aero are a MESS. So good to see fire suppression taken seriously
Just saw the video amdnthe answer (or a viable answer) to hos alternator problem is run it off the rear end. I have seen several set ups that run off the rear end and it works great. Speed of the alternator stays within a narrow band easily tuned by the alternator pulley size. Good luck. Also lithium battery swaps will give you more reserve with a lighter weight.
do the math on the alternator and crank pulleys, sounds like alternator speeds are too high. I wonder if the owner is DIY'n this all himself with nobody to bounce ideas off, although most shops would likely miss this and throw another alternator on it, lol.
This is the comment I was going to make with the addition of suggesting they call Mike Singer from Singer alternators and have him build them exactly the alternator they need for this build.
He has both of those this is an issue on multiple Honda platforms and they use an alt ran off the drive shaft which is something he said he will be doing
@@devinej8411 Just when you thought you understood the definition of insane lol Obviously you just need a spinning force, but damn lol The power requirements of this thing is insane. So cool how many work arounds having to do this opens up. Especially in a race car. Now you can consider weight distribution and maybe even driving force based on placement.
I remember the first time I really snapped a Miata hard sideways... Luckily I was young and stupid enough to keep my foot in it and I powered my way (sideways) out of a roundabout, so sideways that just by looking over my shoulder I was face to face with the BMW driver who'd been tailgating me. He decided he didn't wanna be that crazy and backed right off. I've never cranked on full lock that quick in all my life 😂
Yeah, i got the last sat of stage 3 900hp rated Axles for the CTS diff that KMiata made a few years ago. The stage 2 is rated 600hp that they have. I'm still BP with the ZF 6 speed tho.
Clean up all unnecessary wiring, fix charging issue, exhaust issue, driveshaft issue, and the list goes on. As you fix a failure with an upgraded part a new failure will present itself. As this guy already knows. Love to the CH-47 mech. I’m a fellow hooker! Great video, insane car, and people doing things with machines the engineers that designed them never would have thought could be done 👏👏👏
Holly crap !! This mans mind set and mine are identical, i thought i was the only 1 that thought this way. Ya im autistic but wow its cool to see someone else that thinks and works the same way i do !! Way way cool awesome miata aswell
I love it. I love a proper over powered and battered looking racecar. This guys so clam about everything. I'd hate to see him get angry. The guy needs some active aero braking, like that first gen Subaru wagon Hoonigan made. Porbably not legal on track, though.
Polish the yoke out! Get rid of the fracture point by doing that. Worked in forging industry and this is what we did to our dies to keep from breaking.
I would have to guess the belt is slipping past 5500 especially if it's multiple alternators not charging. Kevlar belt maybe wider pulleys and a wider belt? Such a weird issue. I guess pattern could cause it too if the belt isn't making enough surface contact where you could put a guide pulley close to it so the belt practically wraps 80% of the alternator wheel.

The man sees nothing but the problems in a monster he created and loves every second of it. The humility and dedication are inspiring.
The most impressive thing about this build is all the troubleshooting that leads to the Frankenstein nature of the parts used in the build.
I love how every modification tells a story.

He needs either a good lithium car audio battery or a larger amperage alternator with an underdrive pulley
He has both of those this is an issue on multiple Honda platforms and they use an alt ran off the drive shaft which is something he said he will be doing
His pump for the air Jack's are a huge hindrance to his entire electric system. He definitely needs more than what he has.

For the alternator just see if you can get a big pulley (or underdrive the crank pulley) so it's not spinning so fast, then it won't cut off.
An amazing beast!
I would have to guess the belt is slipping past 5500 especially if it's multiple alternators not charging. Kevlar belt maybe wider pulleys and a wider belt? Such a weird issue.

If memory serves me correctly, Chevy blazer alternators are 1 wire. So any grounding issues will cause problems.
Is it a crank out of an S2000 or someone making those now? The K23 build is so sexy. Can play it safe at 9k rpm... Beautiful
9k RPM while putting down 800 whp, man what a motor!
Try Mechman alternators, goes up to 500amp output. Tell them the rpms you run to
