Just remember to only use 9,000 against EK9s

I love the fact this build was inspired by the lore in Initial D about Takumi being told dads car could rev to 11k
I was waiting for some deep and scientific reason for the 11k redline. Then he just said "Initial D" and I just smiled in happiness. To think that an anime could spark this much passion into a build is insanely epic.
Iirc the 11k engine in Takumi’s AE86 was supposed to be an engine that’s usually not found in road cars. I remember some dialogue where Bunta was asked something like “how did you get this? This shouldn’t exist anymore” so I thought it implied that that specific engine came from an official racing team.
@@computer1up yeah they said later in the show that it came from a Group A AE101 and made about 255hp at 11k RPM
@@guilhemsd2949 ah! Yes that was it. Thanks!
It's the way we know how fast Bunta is. Dude can buy special engine. I guess it's his rival in the past or his drive buddy.
What a humble wonderful guy ... no wonder his sponsors still love him.
I love that you all discuss the presence of that engine vs just chasing power and throwing a K or SR at it. It takes a certain type of patience and dedication to build that. Much respect to Larry and Taka, and to everyone involved in the build.
It's built for SEMA, so power is irrelevant. It's all about novelty.
@@sepg5084 not just SEMA, but Taka mentioned it being a street car, and a culmination of a lot of his previous chassis/parts being used for this. Power is definitely one of the more sought after things among many builders. That’s why I mentioned how much I appreciate the fact that they didn’t pursue that, and pursued character of the car instead.
@DillonShelburn Unfortunately N/A builds at this level (ITBs, big cams, high comp pistons etc.) actually make it a terrible street car. N/A is glorious but it's a lot of money and drawbacks to get beat by half the displacement and a turbo
@@Desert_Spec Oh I know. Which is even moreso where my appreciation comes from for Taka pursuing this.
@@Desert_SpecDo they? I've always heard this but none of my high reving NA builds have this problem. It's like saying you wouldn't want to street a Hayabusa.
DUUUUUUDE as a former AE86 owner, this engine is bringing a tear to my eye. For so long, the UPPER limit of the 4age was like 9000rpm for a street motor, but now you're telling me we can have 11k AND drive it on the street?! Taka, you're gonna make me go AE86 shopping again!
I mean, not really. It has to have the bearings and valves and valve springs replaced every 24 hours of run time.
@@Adam-ub9nuyou sure you watch the whole vid? He said he built and engineered it by destroking it to make it less inertial side to side by the piston, less wear to the cylinder wall.. in short built to be reliable street car
get ready to max out all ur credit cards zD
@@trijohn23 I listened to it at work, maybe he was talking about the race cars having to do that? You're not gonna rev something to 11k RPM too many times before it needs to be rebuilt.
drove my1986 MR2 with a 4AGE motor at 10500 rpm for over a year, without any change of parts at all, except for the crystal in the ECU.@@Adam-ub9nu
This is one of the sickest builds I've seen in a while. There is some crazy engineering in that motor setup. Cant wait til it's dialed.
Taka Aono is the true OG! He's the definition of AE86 and drifting from the very beginning in the US. So heart warming to see him still at it and back with such an incredible build.
Reliable 11,000RPM is insane
Great to see my old autocross buddy Taka! He won a Solo 2 National Championship in an AE86 long before he started drifting. Thanks Larry!
Ae86s are still obtainable here in NZ. Plenty came in as grey imports in the 90s and early 2000s. What you can do with these cars now is unbelievable as technology has moved on. Loved the end of the video where there is a Spoon Fl5 casually hanging out in the background.
Damn, they're all rusted out here. I'd love to have any RWD Corolla, honestly.
get me one fr
~ Make sure to rev it up to 11,000. Don’t loose! ~ Bunta Fujiwara
Wow clip of 11k rpm on Dyno with sound is amazing. 😮
Can't get enough of your content Larry every time I watch one of your videos I think to myself there's no way he can top this one but you always do you're a great role model and sponsor for the car community as a whole stay cool 😎
Absolutely beautiful. That is literally what I paid for my first two AE86's in '03... $300 (SR5) $500 (GTS)
Happy to see Aono san keeping his AE86 true to it's roots. Lots of folks can't get over power figures and arguing numbers online, but these cars are about the passion of driving. When an AE86 is set up right, the driver feel, sights, and sounds are up there with the best. I've been building my 4AGE and AE86 project with this same philosophy in mind.
set up right after throwing 30K into it?
@@justintowers8230 lol I wish it was only 30k. I’m waaaaay past that amount into my project and it’s not even done yet. It’s not a logical pursuit by any means.
@@DoubleOSevanI'm doing something similar with a 80 datsun 210. Its a naturally aspirated sr so Im not expecting major power but it is all nissan, revs to almost 9500 consistently and car only weights 1700lbs so its a rocket
@@damianlindsey6177 sounds like a good time! 🤙
@@DoubleOSevan what im getting at it what your saying is absurd. People are saying Rob Dahm RX7 is a great RX7. uhh no its not. He put $200K into it, tubed chassis, completely different suspension geometry way to much power for the street. Then people will "grocery ghetter" Its not an RX7 any more. the question is at what point does the chassis stop becoming what the manufacture intended it to be.
Taka is such a good dude. Always loved catching with with him when he ran Formula Drift
Tsuchiya needs to drive this Hachi Roku on Gunsai to see how fast can go
Bunta: rev up to 11k
Such a great build on an already fun platform. It's been about 30 years since I've driven an AE86 but I can still remember all the grins
You guys are chasing what ichi was chasing years ago. I love it, wish them best of luck
This was my dream with my BRZ. I wanted to build it to rev to 10k but after researching and talking to people and hearing how much money it would cost I decided to boost it instead.
I thought everyone knew the answer to "why 11?"
I used to want a build almost exactly like this one but now is out of my budget thanks for the video Larry atleast I can be happy that a FD driver I used to support get to enjoy it.
Man, I remember my brother in law Mike Lizardi talking about this swap to me in the late 90s when I had my AE101 ‘95 Corolla with 7AFE 1.8L… We miss you Mike! 🙏🏼. Mike was ahead of the times and a true pioneer in the SoCal import scene, way before there was a scene or anything fast and furious!
Amazing car, a remember watching video on the engine build over at MotoIQ, a set of AT Power shaftless ITBs would round out the build perfectly.
Only other thing I would change as a street car is adding transparent CAM belt covers, open cam belts look cool and all, but one loose stone in the wrong place and it ends in tears.
I respect his build… it’s not a weird gutted track type with a relocated radiator, hood exit exhaust, 4 speed/sequential transmission or plexiglass windows.
Please do a follow-up video after he has the intake and tuning issues resolved. I bet this car will sound wicked when you record it!!!
11k, still with PS and AC. Looks fantastic too
12500rpm luckily it didn't blow up like Takumi when he went to 12200rpm 😆
My man looks like Asian John Leguizamo. This car is fucking amazing
Mrp been doing this forever 😂 but it's nice to see.
I searched online for the OS Giken crankshaft and pistons and couldn' find them - so i assume this build was quite exclusive.
11K redline yet accidentally took it 12.5k!?! They built a sport bike motor 😄 Love how Taka kept it NA for pure response over power.
Mann the same sports engine from initial d ❤. The same 11k rpm redline ae86 which blows out in the last race
Ae86 always looks good, especially this one. Legend
9:35 you knew the power was going to be underwhelming when he doesn't straight up answer the question. I wonder what the rod ratio is.
ITBs, 11K RPMs AND AC!? Sign me up! They do Lay-A-Way or Rent To Own, right 😬
My second car was a 4a coupe, what an amazing machine, so sad I sold it young and dumb smh this car is insane!
Larry’s content has been absolute bangers 🔥🔥🔥
This an Initial D fanbois dream AE86, exact engine mentioned in the anime used in the Atlantic and rev to 11000 rpm.
Fwiw the "Exact" engine is a later model 20v 4age, this one here is 16v.
I had the amazing opportunity to create taka’s hero card one season for FD. I was working with my friends at Lifeblasters and we where churning out rad art left and right. I will never forget i got to the pits in pbr and taka had put one of my decals on his quarter glass, i went to him and thanked him, he was as awesome as could be!! GO TAKA! Thank you for staying so humble and for keeping it rad! 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
C3PO and the Diff housing... pure win.
Imagine going to the junk yard and seeing a gold plated rear end! I’d be stoked!
All the yes. What a legend. Him and ueo and hibino keep the dream alive.
Turn it up to eleven, man! Who needs power on a project like this?!
What an inspiration for those of us building and preserving for love
This is the AE86 that every AE86 wants to be.
*_A Toyota that revs as high as a Honda motor 🥹_*
11,000 ❤😮 what a ride.
been to balcony a few times with people who know him personally and I just soak in all they say
Taka has just been pure master class in humble all these years and continues the trend. I love this build and everything he's done with it.
Reminds me of ol my big dreams mate who had/may still have a N1 VZR who always said one day I'll go over 9000 and reach 11000... Until his mechanic crushed his dreams & said to achieve this you'll need to add an extra decimal point to that redline and convert it into 💵😅
what a chad, just to make the anime (GOAT car anime) quote possible in real life.. damn you're truly a GOAT
the guy is based af, build inpired partaly by iD
His explanation of the 7a and why they destroke it A1
High Rev-ing is additive, my 600cc bike revs pass 15k, from 8k-15k is pure earganism.
I love the sound of 4age with itb. It really is awesome. What a guy 👍 i would love to have 11rev in my toyota 1975😅 3gen
Beautiful Twin Cam 👌🤙💯 They can get 220hp-240hp fly wheel out out of a fully built 4age or even a reverse rotation b series honda engines over here 🇮🇪 but they are pure rally engines big money
Pure B series goes beyond 300 hp over here. K series can go over 400
were can you buy that 4.7ag engine package
supra gets all the hype of fast and powerful. what people dont realized the AE86 was the best touge car toyota built. their FRS is great it handle well but a tune AE86 still better.
2005 Formula D: Round 2- Atlanta, GA: Taka Aono AE86 vs Samuel Hubinette Viper
To me, this is still one of the best moments in the history of Formula Drift. It's one for the history books.
Going head to head, the judges could not decide the winner so they said to run it "One More Time" as they do.
After going a second time, the judges could not decide the winner so once again they said, "One More Time" which was the first time in Formula Drift's history to run 3 times.
After 3 times, the judges actually wanted them to run a 4th time, but unfortunately after running 3 times, Taka Aono was forced to withdraw from the competition because his AE86 had overheated due to too many consecutive runs, not enough time to cool down.
After this in 2006, Formula Drift created the points system for each run and the Sudden Death rule which prevented going a 4th time.

Taka Aono is a legend in my book and I would love to chat with him specifically about this drift battle.
Anime weebs: "bro check out my sick figurine collection"
Initial D Fans: "bro we finna get the car in this anime and get that same engine and make it rev to the same 11k redline"
toyota should just sell these chassis again... New cars are over rated...
I really miss my 20v aw11...
Thanks for the killer content!
my 2 stroke barely beats that, minimum rpm 11280 but on a grippy track ive seen 11600
would this work in a 4AFE build LMAOOO i wanna do this to my 96 rolla or should i jsut 2AR or 2zz swap it lol
No
Bunta is still driving us crazy to this day.
i had a 4age bt in a toyota levin ae111 for a while, it was such a fun car, the sound of 8500rpm was exhilirating. sadly it had minor issues, i bought a new car, and had to sell the old car, even though the issue turned out to be a simple stuck idle control valve, which was easy to fix. but the suspension and brakes were not really w.o.f worthy, so i sold it for a measly $700nzd... at the time i was living at home, and my dad didnt want it on the property anymore.
its crazy. that thing is probably worth like $10k now... and that was only 8 years ago.
Drifters wet dream car........
yess "street build". proceeds to almost never drive on the street.. when he said 11k rpm i thought oh it must make 220-230whp like the atlantic 4age's. but 185whp?? eehhh uhhh
sound like K24 block with K20 crank, but use longer con rod for better rod ratio.
Anyone else think of Spinal Tap when Larry Chen asked, “Why eleven?”
Moto iq built the engine?
its crazy that all this effort goes into making 180hp, so much respect
I don't watch many of these types of video's but this was a great video! Actually made me want to watch more of it and wonder what else he has stashed away. Just purchased my Chaser a year ago this month and I absolutely am in love with it. Saddens me to think we could have had these cars in the 90's but our shitty manufacturers (Ford, Chevy etc) probably faught tooth and nail to keep them banned by lobbing our government.
For SHAME!!!
Great video, wish I was healthy enough to build my Chaser up to 600whp.
Old school excellence looks awesome 👍
How much is the crankshaft kit? Can't find any information about the kit online at os giken
I thought I was hot shit with my 9300rpm B18c 😂
I made 177 wheel before i got a hondata and a tune 170 on this thing seems low even though its a 1.6
No doubt that is a stunning car, but stay away from cigarettes people, it rots your teeth.
This is literally Takumi’s car after his dad finished built it for the last couple races and I believe. I just remember it revving to the moon, 11,000 RPM 🤔 now I have to go back and watch initial D ❤ Love the A86 build 🫶🏿🫶🏿🫶🏿 not respectful building one like Takumi’s. This is what I imagine it would be in real Life
Hi Larry, I would like to check with you will there be any underground carpark meetup for JDM cars during coming TAS(2024)week or period?I would like to experience and very keen to attend this kind of JDM cars meetup event and hope you can share some info with me.Hope to hear from you soonest, many thanks in advance Larry.
This video makes me regret getting rid of my super charged ae86 coupe.
Sugoi build! Love proper InitialD inspired AE86 builds It's so cool to see that he's running my ITB's (20 Valve Blacktop) with the very same 100mm SQ Engineering velocity stacks from BGRS out in California
I’d love to see where billet blocks are with the 11,000+ rpm engines in 2024.
Destroked and longer Rod, with lighter pistons does change everything.
🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼😎☮️🍀
I guess I'm just partial to Japanese anything when it comes to the Automotive industry from bone stock to like ya know "insert build level here" but he explained the kit and engineering of said kit unbelievably perfect to the point where ANYONE would understand. AND MEANWHILE explaining it in ENGLISH being his second language. I am PERMANENTLY a Japanese enthusiast and that's saying a lot because I don't hate almost any car simply for the basis elements of freedom with driving anything EXCEPT the awfully atrocious Pontiac Aztec.
thats actually cazy im tryna build a 1.8 7age but a 20v not a 16v like him but a black top 4age head, that crank looks disgustingly like beef up and its perfect
Anyone who came here and didn't know it was built because of Initial D gets their man card revoked. Didn't really appreciate the cheesy interview question either. I assume Larry knew already.
What an amazing video of that car and owner. Not only the built car and Taka-san are wonderful, no, Larry, you did an amazing job filming, interviewing and appreciating that work.
Pure love
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
11:48 🎶 BABY MAKE UP YOUR MIND 🎵
literally my dream AE86 build
Probably makes 200hp and only 90tq....
Wow Taka’s such a cool humble guy you can just talk car for hours with. So much knowledge too. Love the 7afe block build. Building one myself with itbs too! Sound over power anyway💦
that's so interesting... de-stroking a longer block to reduce some internal stresses while revving. that's wild and something I've never even thought of. I guess it makes sense that anyone still working on 86's is going to be digging that extra bit deeper into things.
takumis car had a 20 valve racing engine in it at that stage of initial D! fun fact
I salute the few OGs that clicked on this video for the 11k RPM AE86 because they knew about what Taka mentions at 11:25 😄
What a fascinating builder this man is Larry you and Dino are next level interviewing these JDM ICONS👌👌👀
Only 24 hours of operation before u have to break down ur Engine is crazy dude a serious commitment but damn that’s a pain
My friend from high school bought an 86 gts from high shop class an old lady donated it and it only needed a clutch… he paid $250 and the school bought the clutch hahahah good old 2006
This car is awesome. Anytime a car can rev super high is awesome. Just imagine being it in and pushing. It would probably sound glorious 😮
4age+7afe=1.8liter 4age we did that to my cousin's starlet almost 20 years ago KT san did it 1st with the techart build ae86.
But it was carburated and it did not Rev that high, it only revealed at 9000 rpm.
Larry; "Why eleven? Why not ten-five?" Taka; "Because this one goes to eleven."
Duh, Larry
