Over the years, gymnastics routines have become very formulaic and even predictable. Most gymnasts perform the same range of skills and the Code of Points doesn't exactly promote diversity and originality.
Whether it doesn't fit properly in the composition, the actual reward is pretty much non-existent or the likelihood of large deductions is high, the reasons for the lack of variety are diverse.
In this video, we'll take a look at 5 rare balance beam sideward elements.

I wish FIG would add a "unique skill bonus" like if a gymnast does a unique skill no one else is doing rated C or higher they get a bonus. Maybe that would help make the sport a little bit more diverse.
Yes I was also thinking something like this. Would really make it a lot more interesting to watch.
I've thought about this too. But I wonder...
How would a skill be categorized as unique? If a unique skill starts gaining in popularity, how many gymnasts can do it before it's no longer unique? And which of them can do it and get a bonus, because if they all lose the bonus for that skill then the skill becomes unique again since people will stop doing it
I know not everyone will agree, but I think they should cap CV at 0.5 points per routine. This would especially affect beam where some gymnasts build up their difficulty basically by connecting as many B skills as possible. I think we would naturally start seeing some more unique skills which we don't see often simply because they're hard to connect
@@honeyfromthebee I would say make it unpredictable. If you perform a skill done by let's say max 5 (you included) in that competition, you get a bonus point for uniqueness. So it depends on who does what in their routine in that comp.
It would 'force' choreographers and athletes to think outside the box
@@Hannah-vt7lc But how do judges know who will actually end up performing a given skill in a competition? They have to score routines as they're performed. If someone performs a "unique skill" and gets a bonus for that, but then too many people end up performing that skill in total do they have to fix scores retroactively and subtract bonuses given? Even if they wait until the very end to award bonues (after all gymnasts haver performed on an apparatus, aside from that being a logistical nightmare, that would mean that a gymnast performing later can strategically lower opponents scores who have already performed be performing the same skills. Also, they can't just give bonuses to the first (let's say 5) and then not the next, because gymnasts don't pick their performance order
That’s how you foster cheating with that subjective content 😂
The biggest crime in the CoP is giving the front tuck from side stand a D rating. It fully deserves an F. It’s valued the same as the normal front tuck. Ridiculous
The biggest crime is giving the mo salto the same rating as all of these cheated half turn releases😭 but if we’re talking about beam: the Schäfer being E, the double pike 1/1 being rated the same as the tucked one and the Teza being E
Phillips mount is INCREDIBLE. I love handstand style mounts
Yeah, I loved her; she was incredible. But she has hella back problems now.
Personally, I just think of the potential back problems when I see footage of that mount.
I love the Teza 2.
D rating for side sums mount is a joke. No wonder nobody risks it.
I like all. And since it's called Artistic gymnastics it should be mandatory that gymnast includes creative, beautiful and unique elements in their routines. That started in the 1960s but by the year 2000 was almost entirely missing. And such a shame.
I agree. If I see another wolf turn I might scream! 😬
@@moonloversheila8238 Me too
@@joannayeo9545 me three.
@@moonloversheila8238 You must be a 4-year fan. I pity you. It’ll be eye opening once you realize the problem isn’t wolf turns.
@@tambam6744 What are you talking about?
WOWWW SIDE SOMI MOUNT😮💨
The Side somersault mount looks as hard as hell to do. No wonder there is barely any footage of it 😮
The Teza 2 are excellent skills on Balance Beam.
1:37 Really the COP is ridiculous. How can a side flip mount be valued the same as a front tuck??? It's obviously harder! 🤦♂
It’s kind of sweet that Vera Kolesnikova is Victoria Komova’s Mom
The Phillips mount is just so mesmerizing
My back hurts every time I see the Philips! The Kolesnikova is my favorite of these, its so beautiful. I think I'm in the minority but I don't like hip circles on beam, they are almost never smooth...
Same opinion for the philips! Especially because im a gymnast with back pain :(
I like the the hip circles on beam because of the fact their unusual, but I get what you mean. However this one 0:57 looked so smooth I fell in love.😍
0:50 Now I get why Chinese gymnasts inserted the Yurchenko loop into their routines. But to me only the hip circle version should be a D or a tenth higher than the front support only.
That last one made my back cry uncle.
Honorable mentions to: 1. Mount: RO + BHS 1/1 to hip-circle sideways (Pryakhina - USSR, 86-87 + Zamolodchikova - RUS, 99-03); 2. Mount: RO + Jump with 1/4 turn to handstand and hip-circle / stand sideways (Valle - ESP, 95-96 + Elise Ray - USA, 97); 3. Mount: RO + Jump with 1/2 turn to near-handstand to support/hip-circle sideways (Gurova - USSR, 86-88); 4. 1/1 "Y" turn sideways (Dudnik - USSR, 89-91); 5. Back walkover with 1 1/4 turn to hip-circle sideways fr. sit / tuck-stand (aka "Valdez" with 1 1/4 turn; Abrashitova - USSR, 91).
RE: Yurchenko Loop:
Yulia Yankovskaya, a Jr. from the USSR, performed a Yurchenko loop in the tucked position to kick-out around 1989 (in other words, a sideways "Chen"-flic). I also recently saw video of either another Soviet, or CHN athlete from the 80s perform this in the piked position (aka sideways "Rueda"-flic). Interestingly, several CHN gymnasts, incl. Wu Jiani competed the "Yurchenko" loop prior to Natalia; Wu did it at the 1981 Worlds, where she won BB bronze.
RE: Kolesnikova:
It makes me sad to think the same error on the "Kolesnikova" (originated by Ludmilla Ezhova in 1996) cost RUS the Olympic team title in 2000 and Anna Pavlova the 2008 Olympic BB bronze... both Anastasia and Anna were unable to make it to handstand after the back dive 1/2 and collapsed to the beam.
RE: Teza II:
I wonder if the Teza II would be subject to the same requirements as a Yang Bo, since the COP specifically states "Yang Bo" when outlining its downgrades and execution errors. For ex, a Teza II with the front leg below horizontal should technically not be subject to downgrade since is NOT a Yang Bo jump.
Hip circles look so cringy to me… 🫣
Ain’t no way the side somi mount should have the same value as the tucked mount
Anyone just hear that apparently Gabby Douglas is back training at WOGA. Idk if this is fake news but I can’t find any actual source other than Gymcastic saying it on Twitter
Link ?
Source ?
I read that too, it will be interesting to see if it's actually true. I hope Simone comes back but it's not looking like it
I like the last one better. So much flexibility needed!
wow, the kolesnikova is beautiful!
Might we get examples of skills with head contact as part of the element? That just seems like something you would try to avoid
1. Lilia Podkopayeva (93-96) and Vanessa Atler (97-00) performed Headspins with a 1/2 turn in their routines. 3. Carly Patterson performed a Headstand in hers (01-02). 4. Elizabetta Preziosa performed a Side Aerial into a forward scale for 2 seconds before dropping into a Back Walkover, during which she bent her elbows and briefly touched the beam with her head, fulfilling the requirement at the time (~2011). 5. Several gymnasts have performed Headsprings as mounts or elements in their routines; examples include Phoebe Mills (87-88), Henrietta Onodi (89-92), Bai Chunyue (99-00).
"The Philips" given me a terrible backache by watching alone.. Jeez!
Kolesnikova can actually be a side onodi
