I know this game gets a lot of frag both back then and nowadays, but this never stopped me and my brother from playing the sh*t out of this game. We were just massive Marvel fans back then, and the idea of a much darker game sounded awesome to us. So while others dislike this one, I’ll forever love it for the memories it gave me with my brother. Great video, Ian, and I can’t wait for all the stuff you have planned, especially Monday Night Blitz😁. Hope you and all the DanDans continue to have a good one, and I love you all.😊❤️
I always thought this game was peak. Back when I was a kid my brothers and their friends would always have game parties and this was one they all would play.
Fun Fact, Hazmat, Keith Kilham, actually cameos in Marvel Universe vs Avengers in which the artists mixed up which Hazmats to draw, & so when they didn't know if they were going to redraw the entire page, they went to see if they were allowed to have him and found out MARVEL ACTUALLY OWNS THE IMPERFECT ORIGINAL ROSTER. EA JUST GAVE IT TO THEM WHEN THEY WERE PLANNING A SEQUEL WITH A NEW CAST! Anyway, I had fun with the game no matter how broken.
Winning with Daredevil and hearing him say "just imagine what I could do if i actually tried." Was peak for me. I still use that line on folks these days. This game was epic.
Wolverine doesn't have super strength, although the weight of his adamantium skeleton can give him the ability to break through objects easier than a human could.
@@lightskinnedlarry728 if it's something you are wanting to get technical about, look at the word I used "Super" not "enhanced", both are in different realms of strength.
This game was definitely a favorite in my childhood. I remember getting so excited after unlocking Storm from playing so many exhibitions and playing Elektra after watching the movie on repeat. I’d get short PVC pipes from my dad and pretend they were my sais and re-enact the invasion in our woodline like it was NYC. Rather it was a good game or not, it was all we needed as kids. On the official marvel wiki it states Wolverine: "has some degree of superhuman strength enabling him to press somewhere in excess of 800 lbs but not more than 2 tons".
I had this game on GameCube when it first came out, I remember I was around 6 when I actually played it and my Dad and I spent WEEKS playing through the story together. For some reason what I distinctly remember though is that I didn't have a memory card for the GameCube at the time so we left my GameCube running for weeks on end while we played through the story, and the week we hit the last part of the game my Dad actually went out and bought a memory card so that we could save and wouldn't lose everything in case the power went out (which it did a lot at my old house). All of that being said as a kid I loved the game but a few years ago I threw it back in my GameCube to show my wife the game and.... yeah... it hasn't aged well
The game is terrible. However, my best friend I put in hours playing the vs mode. It's the most chaotic, jank, and fun you could ask for. Some of my most cherished memories of us playing games together come from this game. It's so bad that it's fun.
“Do you remember Game Crazy?” After The Spoony One’s riff track on them? How could I forget? “Game Crazy would like to apologize for the behavior of Ms. Zelda Scott. We’re crazy but not that crazy.”
My reason for wanting to get Marvel Nemesis back in the day was because Spider-Man was on the box art. It's kinda crazy to think you and i both had the same reason for wanting the game. That's pretty awesome.
The reason the Imperfects have never shown up again is because, as original characters created by EA for this game, Marvel doesn’t own the rights to them.
I am sure others have answered this by now but Wolverine does not have super human strength. His bone structure gives him durability and the ability to heal itself. His claws can force themselves through things (but it isn't like weight lifting strength).
Nah, this is one of those things where modern gaming has clouded hindsight. I remember things like the limited roster being a complaint back then, but as you see in the comments, overwhelmingly, most people enjoyed this "bad game". I think the reason this game was enjoyed so much despite it's flaws was because at the time there was nothing like it. You had your 2d fighters like street fighter....your 3d side step fighters like MK and tekken. And while there was Powers tone, we never had a main stream open-sandbox stage to roam freely and use the entire surroundings as weapons. These were interactive battle locations and not just backdrops like the other mentioned games.
I always love you retrospectives and this was no different. I never played this game, so I can't really add to it. BUT congratulations on likely reaching a goal you've had! Can't wait to catch more about it!
This is why i loved Game Crazy so much... the folks who worked there was honest with you about the games and were more concerned about you enjoying your purchase than they were about making a sale. I remember one time at my local one I asked about a game and the clerk told me... "Do you want me to lie to you... or do you want me to tell you the truth?" I tell my kids that now lol
The manager at my old movie theater bought a PSP and left it in the office for people to play. We would buy a bunch of used games from gamestop to keep in the office and we had a copy of this game for it. No one ever really played it, you mostly spend your time shooting multi-colored energy basketballs back and forth at each other
So, if you haven't noticed, there are those that have fond memories of this game. Despite the many many flaws of it, the game and its story had an interesting premise and really needed more time to cook. The gameplay is rather frustrating (such as with Elektra ugh) does get repetitive, very much so. The story itself is really not as fleshed out or told as it should've been. There were some bad choices made. But overall, it can still be a fun time. This is one I think, could be redone in a much better way because it did have so much potential. To answer your Wolverine question, no he doesn't have super strength enough to pick up something like a car, he's not hulk or spiderman.
I used to play this game with my dad in the vs mode. He wasn't much of a gamer but we had hours of fun over multiple years playing this one. The story stuff sucked, and it's not as good as it could have been, but the style was cool, I dug the darker themes, and still think something based on this could be amazing. Good memories, not so good game.
Movie Gallery, now that's a name I haven't seen in years. They used to run ads during late night TV, showcasing their huge adult area and always "featuring Vanessa Del Rio"
I most certainly remember GameCrazy Dan Dan. I worked at a Hollywood Video with one attached to it. Loved the vibe of that store the employees told you how it was with no BS. That job was a damn cool experience, dicking off watching movies and playing games with the homies when no one was at the counter, living that Clerks life for in reality.
That comic does answer some questions like how the Imperfects are not really villains they are being mind controlled by whatever substance those control devices use, and why Elektra most likely has it on later in-game cause in the comic she had one on her and enjoyed the effects from it since even in the comic she willingly puts one back on herself to get that feeling again. The comic is basically all about the Van Roekal's plan using another alien invasion as a way to get Maya so he can make Paragon (even though the in-game bio says Van Roekal took her centuries ago). It even ends with the Imperfects and Marvel cast on relatively friendly terms until Van Roekal recalls the Imperfects to his ship and somehow basically mind-wipes everyone.
I actually followed this game really closely pre launch. It was originally developed under the code name "Marvel vs EA". At the time people thought it would be like the early James Bond game character vs Punisher and wacky combos like that. A pseudo Marvel vs Capcom for "the next generation". What we got was somehow both better and Worse than that original idea. (Also in the original Gameplay reveal on the official website, the finishers had Blood. Wolverine's finisher in particular was much more brutal. I was so disappointed when I got the game and blood was removed) I always hated how EA felt compelled to make their own characters when the Marvel Roster is so vast. The sequel was going to be an arena fighter with blocks of levels filed with destructible environments and civilian NPCs. And no more imperfects aswell. It was codenamed Marvel Beatdown, but was cancelled when EA Chicago was closed down smh
Honestly I had good memories of this game when I was a kid and as a major Spider-Man fan when I saw Spider-Man on the cover art it made me want to play it
This game has the best simulation of Superhero's fighting in an arena of any game ever. The hits felt big, the scale was perfect, the art style was unreal, the story was cool, I have no idea why people hate this game.
ok so i looooooved this game when i was a kid but i /never/ bothered beating the story mode. i tried, briefly, but it was way too hard and i didn’t have the patience for that as a kid lol. i would just play “exhibition” matches over and over against a second controller plugged in and make up my own stories 😂 that’s how i figured out you could unlock every character and arena without playing the story. i think it was every 10 exhibition matches, one would unlock if i remember correctly. i’d get so hyped seeing a new character appear.
That outro, I’m big hype for whatever you got coming. Big goals getting reached? Amazing. I rented this back in the day and it was one of those games where I was like “this is so repetitive, and not good enough for me to get into for any longer than a little while.” I’d have been upset if it cost any more than a rental. As for Wolverine, he’s not enhanced for his strength level. Think of someone like Batman, who’s just at the peak of human fitness without being super powered. The thing with Wolverine is his durability, because of his healing he has basically endless stamina. So, while he can’t straight up LIFT a car, he COULD get hit by one and be totally fine within a short time. Great video, really brings me back haha
Wolverine doesn't have super strength per se, since he has his healing factor he can push his muscles harder than normal, and coupled with the adamantium, he do some impressive stuff but it's not really a featured component of his abilities.
Also Greg Pak has written tons of great stories, but arguably his greatest contribution to Marvel is the PLANET HULK Story line. Definitely worth a read and is pretty accessible to newer fans.
we can dunk on the game for its faults (no zone intended) but imo spidey & venom had some fire alt corrupted skins & the music was made by the same person who did ultimate spider-man, who also did Invader Zim's
The Game Crazy butterfly effect is legitimately more interesting than the game itself. This game sorta never had a chance as it was sandwiched between MvC2 in 2002 and Ultimate Alliance in 2006. How do you stand up to that competition? I will always remember this game as "we have MvC at home" despite it being more like Power Stone as you said. But I remember there being a lot of hype for this game in the wake of Marvel and CAPCOM going their separate ways, almost like Marvel was trying to bury CAPCOM in a way. Also why is Storm not wearing any pants?
Underrated. Problem is, I bought this game twice for the PS2 and it broke along with 2 of my PS2s (screen froze and weird noises noted on the consoles). So I didn’t buy it in that console again. Now I have it for PSP and it’s working flawlessly.
I loved this game as a kid. I remember driving to the store with my gramp to get it. Just to get home and it didn't work. My gramp took me back to the store that same night to get a good copy. The store was 30 minutes away, and by the time we were done, it was after 9 😅. My gramp was a saint ❤
I remember renting this game, oddly enough from Hollywood Video, and just being like "This is truly awful." I remember buying the comic book prequel to the game when the issues were coming out and that was actually a fun read. Greg Pak and Renato Arlem made chicken salad out of chicken shit. I remember playing through story mode and just being like "After this rental, never again." 10:44 Also, we'll never see those characters again because I'm 90% sure those characters are owned by EA. EA had plans to eventually spin these characters off into their own game if this had been successful.
Noob trap against friends. Any charachter with a tehter throw can instantly ring out anyone on the bridge. So if you can’t tech a full screen throw in a game with All ready buggy controls. This game also has fatality type finishers.
Yo I remember my best friend/ neighbor got this game randomly from EB Games back in 2005. We had no idea what this game was about but it was so fun to play. He still has it today I miss those days in the early/mid 2000s when you could go into a video game store and find some hidden gem, like “Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse“
I remember my brothers and their friends would play this tough. Yes it doesn't live up anymore but as a kid this game was peak lol. Just having a whole battle with friends on the daily bugle is just a different memory a lot of people won't have.
I always loved Wolverine’s design in this game. Also, it was the last time Cal Dodd (from X-Men: The Animated Series) voiced Wolverine until X-Men ‘97!
I played a ton of Def Jam: Fight for Ny before ever playing this game, how come i never noticed Spider-Man's win speech and movement is like something out of Def Jam
I miss game crazy. All the people I knew who worked there had worked at gamestop before and would constantly shit on gamestop all the time. As for this game, similar to you, I was excited to play it and.....yea. I think I tried forcing myself to like it. And it didn't work.
I essentially lived in game crazy. First played Guitar Hero holding the peripheral upside down (not knowing until I bought the game). The managers knew me by name there.
I had the DS version and that was just an enjoyable beat-em up and it had at least 3 alternate costumes for each character that’s how I found out daredevil have a yellow suit.
I always thought it was funny how they had Human Torch on the roster as the fire guy. But then they put their sexy OC don't steal fire girl and shes better than Johnny in every way. Except she can't fly I don't think.
I honestly think they should run this back. Have a better cohesive story, more characters, better graphics (obviously), and more brutal finishers. I'd love that. I still own this game.
This is one of those games that makes me feel like I'm from a different timeline because nobody ever remembers this game
Well, I actually still own my original copy. I honestly enjoyed it and still will pop it in from time to time for my kids to play it with me.
Yeah I loved the game pretty good story and the fighting was pretty good and there was a lot you could do at the time you couldn't do in many games
I remember this game, I just forgot the title but this game definitely caught my attention as a kid
I still have it for PS2 😂
I played it Pirated for my ps2 and i gotta say it was weird for me i did not apreaciate it at the time cause it was so diferent from the usual Marvel but looking back at it i wish it suceed this is such a dope artstyle
This game is actually one of my favorite fighting games I've owned.
My dad used to beat me so bad in this game with Johnny Ohm 😂

"Web slingin ass kickin"

But I remember there being a lot of hype for this game in the wake of Marvel and CAPCOM going their separate ways, almost like Marvel was trying to bury CAPCOM in a way.
Also why is Storm not wearing any pants?
I really enjoyed this game, it was fun to run around and find things to throw at your enemy lol
"Do you remember Game Crazy?"
...what is THAT?
Glancing at MobyGames it looks like a lot of the people on the EA side of this game also worked on Def Jam Vendetta.
“You know what we call that? a web slinging ass kickin” has been etched into my brain since I was 9 and I’m 24 now 😂😂
They should of expanded on this and made it one of the "What-If?" worlds with a comic to expand the story of the game, i would read that!
Underrated. Problem is, I bought this game twice for the PS2 and it broke along with 2 of my PS2s (screen froze and weird noises noted on the consoles). So I didn’t buy it in that console again. Now I have it for PSP and it’s working flawlessly.
The Game Informer article on this game had me hype. But then the review made sure I didn't waste my money on it lol
me and my brothers must’ve bought this game like 10 times, this game will always have a special place in my heart 🥹
I remember playing through story mode and just being like "After this rental, never again."
10:44 Also, we'll never see those characters again because I'm 90% sure those characters are owned by EA.
He still has it today
I miss those days in the early/mid 2000s when you could go into a video game store and find some hidden gem, like “Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse“
I had a demo of this game as a kid. That intro cinematic of the heroes "dying" gave me nightmares.
Telling my kids this was Marvel Rivals.
I've heard that's pretty fun. Not my style, but I'm glad people are liking it.
The intros and win quotes are straight out of Death Jam. If only the game was as polished
I remember this game growing up it was a such a weird fighting game in my opinion.
It's pay day and 616 has uploaded a video on one of my favorite guilty pleasure games.
Spider-Man saying ass was the first time my mom ever heard a swear word on a video game 😂
18:30 Rumor? I the trailer for the game is online. I remember originally seeing it on some video game TV show back at the turn of the century.
I used to love this game bro. Still remember the characters and voice lines
I'm enjoying seeing fans of the game in the comments, it really did have a wide reach, despite its shortcomings.
I played a ton of Def Jam: Fight for Ny before ever playing this game, how come i never noticed Spider-Man's win speech and movement is like something out of Def Jam
Man FFNY is so good.
One of the only superhero fighting games that felt like a superhero fight
anybody remember EB games stores?
Of coooooourse dude.
I can promise you that you would of enjoyed the PSP version WAY better I had it and got it over the PS2 version.
I miss game crazy. All the people I knew who worked there had worked at gamestop before and would constantly shit on gamestop all the time.
As for this game, similar to you, I was excited to play it and.....yea. I think I tried forcing myself to like it. And it didn't work.
Moral of the story... Cocaine's a Hell of a drug 😂😂
In better hands, it could really be something. The IDEA is great. It just wasn't executed well.
I remmember how on PS2, there were ever like max 12 players online on the best day. Still enjoyed it for what it was.
I bought Resident Evil Survivor at Game Crazy. No one warned me. I bought the .Hack games too. Those were alright.
