JUSTICE LEAGUE HEROES - One of The Best DC Comics Video Games? (RETROSPECTIVE)

- Опубликовано: 9 ноя 2022
- DC Comics is a legendary name, is it not? The home of Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, hell, why not just say the JUSTICE LEAGUE, right? But despite having all these top tier, high caliber heroes under their umbrella, heroes who have starred in some tremendous films... why is it that DC's video games don't stand as tall as they shoulder? There are huge hits, don't get me wrong. The Batman Arkham trilogy changed video games forever. DC Universe Online is an MMO with more than 10 years of history under its belt. But Justice League Heroes, an action RPG from the brilliantly talented Snowblind Studios, seems to have come and gone. Today, we're going to dive deep into the life and death of Justice League Heroes.

RIP Kevin Conroy. The true voice of Batman throughout the years.
He died???
@@katmore9 just today.
@@RaDicAL808 WOW! I'm stunned and saddened. I just checked and the story is true. Conroy is/was Batman to so many of us. 😥
Thanks for posting this. It would've been a greater shock without seeing your comment first.
100%, he's the voice I always have and always will hear when I read Batman. RIP.
He wasn't just the voice to me. He WAS batman.
I remember playing the hell out of this game back on PS2, definitely way better than people would think.
Indeed!
superman saying darkseids ass
was the most shocking part of the
game.
I was like wow supes language.
I played on PSP. And loved it
@@ADG.Est.1988 I have a Vita and I would always have my eye on the PSP version wondering if it's any good. I may just go ahead and download it.
I played this with my dad. Nostalgia
Thanks for this retrospective, Ian. I LOVED this game back in the day. But I didn't know Dwayne McDuffie wrote the story. What an incredible legacy he left. R.I.P. 🙂
Thanks for watching! And yes, RIP to a legend.
who
@@michaelmayers3622 Watch the video.
@@michaelmayers3622 he is the creator of Static and one of the co-creators of milestone media. He helped to create Ben 10 and he’s the reason John Stewart was in Justice league show instead of some other green lantern.
@@DrathTengu everything was accurate up until the part about John Stewart. McDuffie wasn't on the team yet when the animated Justice League was in production. It was executive producer Bruce Timm's decision. (This is well-documented and can be found through Google. 🙂)
I remember playing this game with my dad all the time when I was a kid. Loved playing this. The memories from this game I will never forget. Rip dad.
Duuuuuuuuude you've just unlocked my memories of this game! I'd love to have a sequel/reboot.
If only, man.
If this game ever does get a resurgence the most we would probably get is a remaster, but even a remaster would be nice
I had no idea the studio behind “Shadow of Mordor” was making a Wonder Woman game!!! Excited for that now!
Dude yea, I can't wait.
Wait we're getting a WW game? Hell yeah
This game was never on my radar but I love the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games so I'm actually interested in checking this out.
Enjoy it!
That's exactly what this reminded me of and that gives it major points in my book.
this was DC's answer to ultimate alliance.
After like a 1000 years?
superman cursing like a sailor.
Batman coming out in the daytime.
WTF is going on here?
I loved it! One detail I really like was how each character block was a move unique to them like flash avoided attacks while Wonder Woman deflected
100%
Oh my GAWD, I've been WAITING for you to talk about this one! Seriously one of the best blind purchases I've ever made. I remember walking into GameStop in 2006, not even knowing this game was a thing, seeing it on the shelf, and my jaw dropping. I had to take it home, and I played the hell out of it. Crispin Freeman as Superman, Ron Perlman as Batman, Michael Jai White as Green Lantern, and Kari Wahlgren as Zatanna? Holy shit, YES PLEASE!!
This game is ABSOLUTELY the one time a game developer got Superman 100% correct: insane hit points, insane combat damage, and power moves that actually FEEL powerful. The higher levels of Heat Vision that literally push enemies off the screen with a concentrated burst feel so good. Wonder Woman's block reflecting enemy projectiles? SO on point. Zatanna speaking in reverse to cast all her spells (along with the one that turns enemies into bunnies)? Hell yeah!
The only problem I had with the game was that the unlockable characters, while cool, could only be utilized in the scenarios where you could pick your team. This meant it was very difficult for them to be powerful enough to be appropriate for the few times you could use them. I loved Huntress, but by the time you get to use her, she's doing damage in the teens and twenties with her attacks, and has zero powers unlocked, while the other members of your team are all hitting much harder and have numerous special moves available.
I also wasn't a fan of the system that let you slot the orbs into different skills to boost them to varying degrees. Boost orbs are a finite resource, and unless you're hoarding them throughout the whole game, and combining them as you go along to make better ones, it always seems like a waste to use them since they can't be retrieved once they're slotted in, only replaced. They're great if you hold them for the end game and use them to turn Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman, Superman, or Green Lantern into complete curb-stomping powerhouses for the final fight with Darkseid, but otherwise the upgrades aren't all that impressive. :)
Oh, and how pissed was I that Supergirl was only unlockable on the PSP version, despite being in the credits for the PS2 and Xbox versions? Not cool, Snowblind. Gimme my Supergirl!
But that's my rant for the night. Mega cool to see you talk about this game, Ian, and I am OVER THE MOON for your next Superman For Everyone release!
Great writeup, and I agree with you 100%. I never owned the PSP version, so I've also never played as Supergirl, which is bogus. Glad you're looking forward to the Superman movie retrospective, I won't let you down.
I freaking loved this game! I was anticipating a sequel. But never happened. 😞
If only, if only.
I really loved this game. Very underrated. Iirc Ron Perlman as Batman was pretty cool
He's always awesome, for sure.
When I heard at social media that Kevin Conroy had passed away. I was very shocked and sad to hear that news, and I am really going to miss his voice.
R.I.P Kevin Conroy, you had brought so much fond memories in our childhood years both in cartoons and video games. You’ll always be our one true Dark Knight in our hearts.
RIP indeed, a true legend.
Oh, wow. Nostalgia trip.
I knew a couple of the people involved with this game and it was such an exciting release since I loved the developer’s previous games. As a big DC fan, it hit all the right spots.
As a fan of details, I loved all the little extras they put into it. Doing the hacking mini game as the Flash, for instance, actually gave players more time. And using a melee object as Batman gave him different moves that showed off his skills instead of using it as a club. Even the blocking animations were unique for most characters- Batman would cover himself with his cape, J’onn would phase through, Flash would dodge at super speed and Superman just stuck his chest out. Loved it.
I’d buy a remaster in an instant.
100%, great writeup.
I remember I bought this game as a kid after watching the Justice League Animated Series and saying "Oh shit a Justice League game" but as a lot of things as a kid I didn't like it but as I got older I can say it a great RPG dungeon crawler involving Superheros like X-Men Legends and MUA it's a great game
Indeed!
My stupid kid brain thought this was a marvel ultimate alliance clone so I wrote it off and never played it
Same. I played it for the first time last year. Ian is 100% correct, it's pretty damn fun, and even better if you're a DC stan.
It totally is an Ultimate Alliance clone, which these games are all Diablo clones. Not a bad thing in my opinion
Same
I think that’s what most of us at the time was thinking the same thing. lol 😂 It’s just a clone ignore it. I regret doing that
@@andysanchez1215 Why would this game being a Ultimate Alliance clone be a bad thing? Did you not like those games?
Rest in peace kevin conroy
RIP indeed. =/
You've been working very hard, as usual, but it seems even harder than ever. Great stuff, and thank you.
This was awesome and I wish I'd played it. It looks reaaaally fun. I also had no idea they were making a Wonder Woman game, and as a WW mark, I'm too excited now. Thanks a lot!
Thanks man. New retrospective coming this Friday, I haven't even announced anything about it. Hope you like it!
I passed on this until recently, assuming it was just an Ultimate Alliance ripoff. I really like it, and honestly the only thing that I don't much care for is the character designs, but I can live with them. Didn't realize Dwayne McDuffie wrote it, no wonder the story was so awesome.
Yea, he did an excellent job.
This game was great playing it on the PS2
Yes!
Love what you said about Superman being able to get hurt. Seriously if they made a game or anything with Superman, the key thing to remember is, yes he is invincible, but that doesn’t mean he can’t feel pain or even pass out from it. And in some ways-especially if the scenario call for his full attention- it can be just as bad as if he were dead.
He's not invincible!
@@616Entertainment yeah, invincible is the yellow guy!
Never heard of this game but it actually sounds really fun. Also looking forward to the Superman retrospective, Ian. Great stuff and hope to see 616 Thunder again soon
....No, it wasn't. I'be been extremely clear about this.
Thanks man. I'm been knocking out scripted stuff left and right and it's all doing pretty damn well.
This game was a big part of my childhood.played it on ps2 and xbox, were fun times
Hell yea.
Dude I loved this game as a kid and as a teenager I gave it another run through on the ps vita. Absolutely held up and all the unlockables were easily my favorite part. Definitely appreciate you giving it the spotlight for a retrospective
Thanks for watching! This was on my list for a long time, I decided what the hell, here we go.
Funny you mention the gba flash game. The way I understand it the plan was to make an individual game for several of the characters just like the flash. However I can't remember the reason it just didn't go through which is why Justice League Heroes: flash is an outlier.
Side note: people feel the way about Superman is because his power level is inconsistent. Sometimes he's a God and other times Batman can slap him around or so which makes him as powerful as the plot needs help him to be at the time. Plus over the years he just kinda gets whatever power he needs at the time to do the job. I need to read the Rebirth story to see how he defeats Dr. Manhatten of the watchmen story because that seems like an interesting fight.
That's the thing about fictional characters: there's really no *real* or *right* way for them to be portrayed, ya know? I personally prefer the Animated Series style to the ones where he's practically untouchable.
This is still one of my top favorite Superhero games, my sister and I loved playing this together. I wish it would’ve continued.
I remember playing green lantern fir the first time when i was like 6, i was mindboggled by how cool his powers were
Zatanna being on the core JL roster is a peak move and she needs to have a main spot in the comics. She the Mistress of magic
Fun fact , Stactic Shock was created by McDuffy comicbook company he owned called Milestone Comics which is now a imprint of DC .
Did... did you not watch the video
the memories i have it this game! the sound of picking up shields and leveling up will be straight up nostalgia for me
Justice League Heroes game reminds me of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Unfortunately I didn’t play Justice League Heroes until 2014 when I was 20 years old.
This released first!
Im glad to see this game getting some love. This game blew my mind as a child, essentially being a dc fanboy. It was definitely underrated and ahead of its time. Was never able to find it in any future gaming consoles after that so im currently looking online for a ps2 to play this game again
I’m glad you enjoyed this game eventually. I remember playing it as a kid and being underwhelmed honestly. I had more fun playing the game boy games and the animated Superman and Batman games personally. But it was nice to watch this vid for nostalgia! Good work!
I mentioned this when you announced this video on Twitter, when I was 7, I played this at a friends house ONCE, we played the first two levels, and he "made me" take Batman and Zatanna at the time (they'd go on to be two of my favorites in my adult life), I remember him just making me fly over the level and not fight any of the enemies, this video alone makes me really want to track down a copy.
Hahahaha, I love that.
I LOVED this game (and the DS version) as a kid. I played it all the time with my brother and I have so many great memories of it. It definitely played a part in cementing my love of superheroes.
Love htis.
I’m 16 and my dad has been playing it ever since the release, still has his ps2 and I see him play it every other day
Great review. This game was seriously underrated, I loved playing it when it first came out. The story and cast of characters were just about perfect, and I loved all the super deep cut stuff because you could really tell it was made by people who did their homework. Playing it again on higher difficulty with your Maxed-out characters is a blast; when playing as Superman at full power, you can just sweep the stages with your heat vision and nuke everything in sight, it recharges so fast you barely need to let it cool down. Feels like a nice earned reward after playing the game enough times through to get your levels that high.
The unlockable characters and skins were a great incentive to keep playing; they went so far as to give the alternate versions of Flash and Green Lantern different voices, and all the Green Lanterns had slightly different visual effects for their power ring attacks. Those little touches went a long way with me.
Basically, what sunk this game at launch was the fact that by that point there had been two X-Men Legends games, plus Marvel: Ultimate Alliance; people got the basic idea of what this game was about, but it felt significantly "less than" those Marvel games, since they were all much bigger and longer, with 4 onscreen characters, many more characters to choose from and a ton more content in general. Most of the contemporary reviews directly compare this game to those games, which is maybe a little unfair but also unavoidable. People looked at this game as a downgrade, only for the most hardcore DC fan, since any more casual gamer would choose the other, similar games with tons more content. Nobody thought it was outright "bad", just more of a step back compared to its direct competitors. Many people felt it was a good first try, though, and were hopeful and expecting that a sequel would "catch up" to Ultimate Alliance and provide a much bigger game. Sadly, this game did not sell well enough to get a sequel into production, and that is a huge shame.
Also, Flash did have other games, though they're a bit obscure. There was a Flash game released for the Sega Master System, and also on the original Game Boy, both based on the 1990 TV series. Neither are considered to be very good, but they're rather rare so they're valuable to collectors. The Master System game may have only been released in Brazil, but I am not 100% on that.
Great write up! And yea, I've been told there are other Flash games in these comments. Weirdly enough they didn't show up in my research AT ALL, I had never heard of them.
Ohhhh man the memories, me and one of my buddy’s at the time would play the heck outa this game. We beat it on every difficulty. I remember the hardest difficulty was insanely hard and you had to have your heroes maxed
Yes, Superman For Everyone, it's going to get another title under it's umbrella!
:)
Indeed, indeed.
Recently started playing this again and it still holds up. Really fantastic game and exactly how I remember it. I was quite surprised actually, thought my nostalgia goggles would trick me like they usually do
I loved this game & I've got a bit of a humorous story, at the part where you're putting teams together to go after Doomsday they don't really tell you which teams are going where right, so when I get to the boss I have to fight him with Flash & Green Lantern, needless to say that fight didn't go well & the next time I put the teams together I made sure to have more heavy hitters for the fight. As for sales I would imagine one of the things that hurt it was this game came out less than a month after Marvel Ultimate Alliance
Hahahaha, I think the same thing happened to me.
Same thing happened to me on my first playthough. I love the Flash, but man, is he the complete wrong choice for facing off with Doomsday. LOL! :D
anybody find it kind of strange batman was fighting in broad daylight?
well there are sometimes he has
no other choice.
Great, great stuff!
I loved this game so much, I used to play it with my brother, he was the Tank in Superman, and I was de DMG dealer with Batman (the Bat sonar special was so OP).
Thanks for the retrospective, this game needs more visibility.
PS: I also love Marvel Heroes and saddens me that we can't play it anymore.
So glad you covered this. I literally was thinking about this game about a month ago and couldn’t remember the name.
I remember I got this and the Superman (2006) game for the PS2 for Christmas. I remember all the costumes each character had. I recall that this game exposed me to the other GLs, I had only knew about John prior.
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed this game It really felt like I was playing a episode of Justice League cartoon. That being said I think the reason it didn't do well is because we had ultimate alliance around that time and ultimate alliance production wise look more grand and epic compared to Justice League heroes not to mention it was a shit ton of characters in ultimate alliance.
This came out before M:UA!
@@616Entertainment oh wow I totally forgot about that lol 🤣
But the point still stands ultimate alliance just did everything better
@@MrDegenerate28 This was more DC’s answer to X-Men Legends as opposed to Ultimate Alliance. As fun as this game was, what hurt it was it was 2 players, after all the Marvel games were 4 players. Even he Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer tie in game, which played exactly like Legends and UA, was 4 players.
@@616Entertainment I think the X-Men game which was very similar to both came out first though and it was very well done for the time. I believe there were two X-men gamse and then the Justice League game, but yeah the MUA game was huge and you got to see a large chunk of what the Marvel universe had to offer. If DC could do that now and it wouldn't be hard to make a better game than the current Avengers game they might be able to sell a bunch of games and generate more interest in their upcoming movies as well.
This was my favourite game when I was a kid. Me and my brother would play this every day and at the time we didn't have a memory stick on our PS2 so we would always restart each playthrough with Batman and Superman.
Nice one Ian! I love this game. And the mars level music is by far top 3 video game songs in my books.
Dude the soundtrack is sick!
The stats and upgrades of your characters can actually carry over to a new game.
My brother and I played this just a year ago. We loved it. And also wondered why it isn't really talked about. It's a really solid game.
I remember playing this game when I was around 5 on ps2 to this day one of the most nostalgic games to me really fun for its time too
I remember playing this on ps2 back in the day, this was and still is a fantastic game, wish I could have finished it but I didn't own the game lol, great video man.
I am 30 seconds into this video and I've been absolutely flooded with nostalgia for this game already.
I remember this. It was DC’s equivalent of Ultimate Alliance. The heroes had alternate costumes it was a good game.
Man I have to say, it's nice to see someone love Superman as much as I do. I'm forty years old and have a huge collection of figures, statues, comics, games, posters, etc. I can see you do too. I have in fact never heard of this game and I think I know why. It's because the Xbox 360 came out and I was so caught up in that. Great video, take care.
Thanks man! Much more to come. Superman: The Movie retrospective coming on December 2. See you then!
I LOVE the sound it makes when you hit people in this game.
Very nice.
When I played this game on my xbox, it was a great find because my xbox had been chipped. I must say I hadn't seen or heard of this game but I went and picked up a bunch of games seeing justice league written on the disc, me and my brother started playing immediately. I thought it was amazing but like you said I was a DC fan, my brother wasn't he enjoyed the 1st couple of levels but dropped out very quickly after a barrage of questions because he didn't know anything about the bosses, even some of the plalable characters as well like Martian Man-hunter plus Zattana. I remember playing it for a couple of hours then looking at the new games. It pulled me back in and I love that story. I played that game with great memories, yet I can see if you are not a fan of DC you are going to do what my brother did. Great retrospective Ian.
Thanks man, and thanks for sharing your memories with us!
I remember renting this game in Hollywood video and finishing that same night. Pulled an all nighter in middle school. Good times.
So many good memories with this game... I was about 11yo and had to pass through my first (and only) surgery. As a "feel better recovering" gift my parents bought me this game and a new memory card. Me and my dad played this together every night until we beat it 100%. So awesome
What a great memory, I love this.
Thank you for this video and I’m definitely showing my sons this cuz this game was heavily underrated and I love this gem.
There's a video game place near me with games from all generations, and they usually have a PS2 copy of this on the shelves. Much like you, I've often picked it up, looked over the box, and then put it back. Now I'm thinking I'll grab it next time I'm in.
The flash was definitely my favorite character in the game and made me want a solo flash game....being able to zip around, ping pong back and forth between enemies, speed punches and make tornadoes was just a blast.....his stretched after image was so awesome to watch while traversing and fighting in the levels....I used a mod to play as the flash on all the levels with unlimited abilities and it makes the game 100% better
Awesome video man are we going to get more Good Bad and Kryptonite videos?
We'll see, we'll see!

I played it with my younger brother ehrn we were kids and more recently a few years ago as teens and it holds up, the 2 player aspect is really where this game shines it makes repeating levels so much more enjoyable
I actually made it to the last boss battle but never finished. I remember Superman ‘cursing’ by kid ear standards. Something along the lines of “Time to kick Darkseid’s ass into orbit” I remember thinking that was so edgy as a 9 year old
Hahahahaha
This game was my first DC superhero game. I had to replay it in order to get all the alternate characters
I played through this game so many times back in 2006 and 2007!
I rented this from Family Video when I was a a kid and I ended up getting it for my Xbox recently it’s still really fun.

Ian, you videos are so enjoyable. Even though I don't really play any of these games, I just like following your passion for them. In fact, you've turned me in to a massive Mortal Kombat fan. Yes, I played the original trilogy as a child, but quit playing after MK3. However, I enjoy following all the news, as well as rewatching your "Mortal Mondays", and past "playthroughs".
Keep up the great work.

I remember beating out this game with my brother. The fact that Zatanna was playable was a total win
Still have it, great game
Dude hell yea.
I’m a marvel guy I feel this exact way towards a game called marvel ultimate alliance, I only played the first couple levels when I was a kid (because I didn’t know how to save lol) My team would always have three of my favorite superhero’s Captain America,Wolverine and Deadpool. With a revolving 4th character. I just picked it up and I’m loving it, it’s great because I get to relive the things I’ve done/seen in the game,Find some deep cuts with the characters who haven’t done anything but are cool and just feel like a kid again. I highly recommend marvel ultimate alliance 1 and 2
Howdy! Commander Dan from the Retrostation here - The Flash had two games. The second was a 1993 game based on that year's hit or miss FLASH tv show. It was for the Sega Master System and was -- Fine...I guess?
I've been alerted to their existence since this came out. Insane that they didn't pop up in my research at all.
@@616Entertainment You got me addicted to DC Universe Online brojangles. Also this review is great.

Great video, Ian, and I can’t wait for your retrospective on the Superman movie. Such a great time to be a 616Entertainment fan.😊❤️👍
The Marvel ARPG counterparts to Justice Legue Heros (sorry forgot their names) were a lot better and more fleshed out. JLH isn't a bad game, but it was a one time playthrough for me.

While I don't have vivid memories playing this game when I was younger, I definitely enjoyed playing Justice League: Heroes for hours. And for years, it was and still remains the game I point to whenever I picture how a modern-day Justice League game could be made.
Fingers crossed they continue to dig into the DC catalog for games.
Another game to find, another game to play. As always thanks for these videos! Hey when will we see you play smackdown vs raw's gm mode ? That would be awesome! I started mine a couple of weeks ago and I'm having a blast thanks to this channel. I need to play this one. Hey great video :)

New here and nice Kryptonian merchandise. Even the Melissa's Supergirl poster.
I just bought this today, I'm sold on it, jack! Great video dude!
I remember playing that game in ps2 with my cousin so nostalgic
Nice!
This game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Mortal Kombat Armageddon were the holy trinity for my brother and I growing up
A lot of nice facts here I didn't know about. I remember enjoying this game over a 3 day weekend. Had a cousin who rented it and we ended up beating it in like 2 nights or so. I wasnt bothered by it being so short, being that it was a rented game but if I bought it at full price, that would have been a huge negative. I think games used to cost like $40-50 new? But nonetheless, I did enjoy it. It always reminded me a lot of X-Men: Legends and I loved X-Men: Legends 1 & 2.
I had it. Definitely need to find a copy. Hopefully we'll a playthrough.
Hopefully what?
@@616Entertainment saw my error. Hopefully we'll see a playthrough of this game.
Yes. One of the best that's ever been. I'm so glad you brought some attention to this. I agree with everything you said about it. I hate that so many fans of DC will never know, but I'm so thankful that I do. Stay Gold, brother.
Excellent work Ian, as always. I've always been a Marvel guy, but your work on all things DC make me want to check out the other side. I'll definitely be picking up a copy of this game.
Enjoy it!
This game was legit my PS2 Childhood!!! I loved playing coop with Friends and loved the story and humor beats
How come you haven't been doing the premiers lately? Those are fun.
I actually bought this game earlier in the year because there aren't many games with Wonder Woman as a playable character. Shortly after, the WW game got announced.👍 I haven't played this yet, but hopefully I'll get to it soon. Great video as always, bud.
The History of God Of War videos were total flops and there were all premieres, I started to wonder if that method of release had something to do with their performance.
I had a lot of fun playing this game on PlayStation 2 with my ex back in 2007/2008, especially during the cutscenes.
Hahahahaa
Remember playing this game and Marvel Ultimate Alliance back on the ps2 era.. both amazing games that would really shine with a proper remake.. really wanted to see games like these nowadays
Ultimate Alliance 3 just came out three years ago, didn't seem to be received very well, unforrunately. =/
@@616Entertainment From what I saw from gameplay videos was a good game.. but being a Switch exclusive certainly killed any chance It had to make success
@@detectivedewitt9536 ???? The Switch has sold over 100,000,000 units, man. That's right up there with the PS4s numbers and way higher than Xbox One.
@@616Entertainment I know.. but being an exclusive is what killed its potential.. Marvels Avengers was a bust and even then sold double the amount of copies of Ultimate Alliance 3 that was surely a superior game just because Avengers was released in pretty much every platform
This game was stupid hard at times that Doomsday fight still gives me nightmares
Great video man
