The lore in the manual read like an Ultimate Warrior promo XD I can just hear him screaming "Hoak Hogen assimilated through the Warrior's brain the last elements of the Power of the Warrior to complete his psychosis of Evil!! Wrestlemania was not enough, Hoak Hogen wanted the WWF!!!"
There actually is a working arcade port of Primal Rage 2's beta build that objectively plays better than this game. It features the ability to transform between human and monster in the middle of the fight, and is much more responsive in almost every way. You can find it at a massive arcade in Chicago.
I had this game back on the Saturn, and played the hell out of it because...well, we were all like 10 and didn't know a good game from a bad one. I remember the character Chromax had a forward+heavy punch that you could wall-bounce your opponent with and combo it into itself before the opponent could recover, letting you infinite them to death by just spamming one move. Naturally, I picked him every time and drove my brothers insane.
If you ever need other "This is gonna suck" quips for this series, might I suggest Denis Leary's "Cheer up kids! It gets a lot worse!" from "Life's Gonna Suck"?
I played the shit out of this game as a kid on my computer. I knew nothing about it except a vague story and it had cool looking robot. It was frustrating and janky, but I loved it. Mostly because it was literally the only fighting game I had ever played.
I’m not sure whether to be shocked or unsurprised at the fact that Mirage made 3 fighting games over the course of 5 years. And they seemingly got worse with each iteration.
In 1994, the prerendered visuals of Rise of the Robots may've stood out, but two years later, it looks common and mundane. A '96 fighting game should give it its all to look more impressive to its competitors.
9:00 The Supervisor's body! What the hell were the developers smoking? She looks like a silver-plated dominatrix with Skeletor's head attached to it. I guess it's tme to break out the paper bag like Shorty did in Scary Movie.
If you listen closely, the bgm playing quietly in the background is the main theme of OMF2097; an old Epic Games fighter, which also, ironically, involves robots.
You know what I always gotta keep on saying right I'm sure you do. Battle of the Eras on DOS, there's no way any fighting game going to top how truly terrible it is. I am hoping are begging you to play it on your show. You haven't seen a bad fighting game until you see this!!!
I'm curious to know if anyone's tried to make a mod/mugen of this game with some better mechanics. There's some potential there, I think. Also, why the hell did they give the Supervisor nipples in her versus picture?
I noticed the problem where the robots look like they’re different distances from the camera immediately and just thought it was a Fatal Fury-style lane switch mechanic. Oh dear
Ironically, M.U.G.E.N also has a granular difficulty. Thing is, it only goes from 1 to 8, and the game clearly tells you which value range is Easy, Normal and Hard.
Only two words entered my brain upon seeing this video thrust into existence: "Oh no...." Bless you, Matt. Never stop putting these broken, buggy brawlers IN THE RING!
So it looks like Matt isn't quite finished with Mirage the studio behind Rise of the Robots as far as fighting games go, I'll be looking forward to when that drops.
Nice job on the 40th episode. Just a thought, but have you considered doing a video of fighting games you won't do despite getting requests for them? Or perhaps a rebuilding of the tier list? The latter because one of these days you might come across a game worse than Criticom or Expect No Mercy, but better than Pit Fighter SNES. In fact, you probably have already...
Well I'm not surprised that the game got a sequel, I mean tons of games did that back in the day even bad games. But the fact that the sequel looks worse than the first game, that is a surprising accomplishment, just... wow.
Loved the vid. Hit the nail on the head in regards to the difference in quality between the console and PC versions. Do give Theatre of Pain a try. It is a slightly more refined game overall.
I played this game when I was a kid, robot design still holds up, background design were good but as mention static, someone should do a remake and Fix all it's faults.
Poor matt has no chance of finding anything worse than that pit fighter port. A gameboy game on snes its absolutely shocking though barbarian 2 on the 8 bit micros is also bobbins
I owned this back in the day, as a pirate disc for PS1. It was... outrageous. Then I've played it on PC and it was also outrageous, but it looked and played slightly better. Technicallty speaking it was far superior with the PS1 version looking so blurry and pixelated in comparison, like a sadder version of an already sad game.
If you had shown in screen shots from both games and didn't tell me which was which, I would have assumed that Rise 1 was the Playstation game and Rise 2 was on the SNES. It's that bad.
15:07 I have been playing OMF for decades (I admit not in the last decade) and you just casually drop the fact they had FINISHERS?! YOU CANT JUST DROP THAT INFO OUTTA NOWHERE!
Has anyone recommend you try “Cyber Gladiators” published by Sierra in 1996? OR “FX Fighter” developed by Argonauts I played both on PC and both were pretty horrendous
Holy cow! I remember going to a videogame store, back in the 90's, and seeing the box for this game. I thought it looked cool, the art on the box, that is.
If I remember correctly, there was also an arcade port of Rise, but, it was canceled. Just another thing they diverted time and effort that could have been better used ;3; I think a prototype still exists though .3.
Shut up and tell me your thoughts on the game awards. I can't wait for the next very entertaining episode of triple ko, right here on RUclips * waits for cheap pop*
One Must Fall 2097, while ain't a masterpiece compared to Capcom/SNK average, is still miles better than both Rise games combined. Its sequel OMF: Battlegrounds, though, is probably gonna end up on this list in the future. That is, assuming you can get it to run first. EDIT: Or even the original One Must Fall, before it was fully remade into 2097.
I guess you could say that these robots didn't...Rise 2...the occasion!
I'll see myself out...

OK that was cleverly cheesy

I can just hear him screaming "Hoak Hogen assimilated through the Warrior's brain the last elements of the Power of the Warrior to complete his psychosis of Evil!! Wrestlemania was not enough, Hoak Hogen wanted the WWF!!!"
And it was then! HOAK! HO-GAN! That the mechanical gods spoke to me! They said "WARRIOR! SHOVE THE CONTROLS INTO A NOSEDIVE!" HOAK. HO. GAN.
SKROOOONK!
Cant wait for that Theater of Pain episode now...

(They didn’t even have the guts to officially release Primal Rage 2 back in the day….)

It should have been impossible and yet it exists.
Yeah. There is a video about it.
1. WHY?1
2. WHY THE FUCK?!
"Somehow, RotR returned".

It's incredible that we live in a world where Rise of the Robots got a sequel, yet Silent Hills never got to see the light of day.
I know, it's like what the fuck? 🤷♂️
Rise of the robots got a sequel but God Hand didn't lol
Let's be real. Silent Hills wouldn't have lived up to the hype.

If you pick Necroborg, you can hold back and hammer the punch button on the hardest difficulty.
You will win.
You should look at the Celebrity DeathMatch game
Despite its horrible controls and gameplay,
Wait… we live in a world where Rise of the ****ing Robots gets a sequel but Primal Rage doesn’t? 😢
Not an officially released sequel, at least...
(Rage 2 even plays better than the first game!)
Can you believe that they're bringing Virtua Fighter back Matt? Aren't you pumped?!
I'll be looking forward to the eventual Triple KO episode where Matt and his friends talk about the glorious return of Virtua Fighter!

Yes, I love the worst fighting game series! 💪 It's been a while.
I remember seeing a preview of this but I honestly thought it got cancelled.
Hey. Where were my Bruce Lee noises when you said Kumitay? WATAAA HAAA!!!
I still wonder whose idea was to give the supervisor BREATS with very visible headlights on both versions

Matt, could you please review One Must Fall 2097? You mentioned it, and used its music. 😁👍
The problem is OMF isn't a bad fighting game. I don't know about the sequel, though. I could see Matt just doing a playthrough.
Ironically, M.U.G.E.N also has a granular difficulty. Thing is, it only goes from 1 to 8, and the game clearly tells you which value range is Easy, Normal and Hard.
Crazy to think they would make a sequel to Rise of the Robots, and that it would somehow look and play worse than the original!

Some potential challengers: WCW Backstage Assault, Celeberty Deathmatch, Simpsons Wrestling and Street Fighter 2 ZX Spectrum
