This song is hardcore real. This isn't NSP's normal sound, but I think it's something Danny HAD to write. If you follow Danny on Grumps, or even have listened to any of the plentiful "best of" compilations, you know that Danny had a tough time getting into the music business, but he tried his best always until it finally worked out for him. This is more real than it is funny or satirical. There are humorous elements, but this is Danny looking back at his past and being thankful he made it. I'm sure there were tough patches out there for him, like there are for all of us. Dan Avidan is the prime example of someone who never gave up on his dreams and carved a path doing what he fucking loved, even in the worst of times. This song is actually fucking inspiring to the point where I'm tearing up thinking back to it. We've all been in young Danny's shoes, and some of us are still fighting the fight to make it to where we can be a rockstar. Fighting through the worst shit life has to throw at us. But Danny's living proof that if we work hard and never stop doing what we love, we'll get there. This song actually touched me, not in the normal NSP NSFW way, but in a way that hits me right in the emotions. It also shows Danny is fucking balling at writing more serious songs. I don't want NSP to go anywhere, but this song is proof that if NSP ever branched into more serious material, they would have talent to do so.
Your comment is right on the money. This has the feel of something that may have just started as a therapeutic letter to one's younger self, turned into a song, turned into probably NSP's best song to date. It's funny, though, that this will be on the same album as Cool Patrol and many other silly songs.
It’s also amazing how this song was released on his fifth Danniversary with as a Grump. He made it.

I'm a straight man, but still i love danny, as much as a straight man can love another man he has never actually met in person and doesn't plan to ever meet in person. He a cool dude and story is so relate-able. He's a important figure in many peoples lives at this point.
Knowing that the legendary Dan Avidan took until 29 to get out of his awkward phase definitely helps me feel more hopeful about the fact that I’m 19 and still feel like a lost, alienated guy. Like I’m gonna be 20 soon and I still feel like I’m not going anywhere. Thank you Danny Sexbang.

45 year old therapist here. I'm a powerlifter, I do MMA cage fighting with weapons as a hobby and teach martial arts, I have 3 goruck toughs under my belt, I volunteer as a SAR responder for the local sherrif's department, and I earned a bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology while working as a single dad and struggling with ADHD. I'm a certified badass.
I showed this to a client of mine who needed to see it, and it really helped her. After she left, I went back into my office and broke down and cried because of how hard it hit for me.
I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was in my 20's. I was always the weird kid who was constantly underachieving. I didn't truly start to come into my own until 29.
It made me hard as fuck on the inside. Such a great song. I wish I could play it for my 12 year old self.
If you're here, and you're struggling, from one badass to another, I hope you take the song to heart. Find your tribe. Ask for help if you need to. Trust that someday, you'll step into your own power, whatever that means for you. If it's MMA, or being a spandex butterfly, just understand that OWNING who you are is the most badass thing you can ever do.

The line about the birthday invitations actually had me break down crying when I first heard it. When I turned 13, I told my mom I outgrew birthday parties. In reality, I was just terrified that no one from school would come if I invited them. Everyone has that wish at least once in their life, to go back in time and change something they were unhappy about. But to go back to give that sad little girl a hug, and tell her that everything will be ok, that it's ok to let it out and cry. Sometimes I wish it was possible, but the best we can do now is help others that are facing the same struggles and know that seeking out help when you need it isn't a sign of weakness, but strength.
Be the person you needed when you were young.
I know it's been a year since you made this comment, but I felt that. I wish I could sit down with my teenage self and tell him everything he needed to hear. Let him know it's okay to not really fit in, it's okay to ask for help with anything, even the seemingly small things. Tell him to not be afraid of failure or rejection. That everything will be okay in time.

I love reading through these comments and seeing how many people share a verse that hit them hard, really resonates with them - but that it's not the same verse for everyone. There are so many amazing and powerful lines in one silly-on-the-surface song. That's what makes this such a sincerely great song.
The line that gets me is 1:57 "Danny don't you know that everyone feels weird on the inside" - the way he says it... I really needed to hear that.
But there are a dozen other lines in this one song that other people feel the same way about:

I've been getting depressed at being 40. I figured that life didn't really hold much new for me anymore and was really getting in a dark place. Seeing Danny here, though, just living the way he wants to and being happy and well-loved makes me feel so much better.

I remember listening to this song in middle school back when it came out. I found NSP through Game Grumps, and I've been hooked ever since. I'm graduating high school this year. There are still times that I feel like an outcast and a fuck-up, but knowing one of the people who made me laugh when I was going through the worst time in my life felt the same and still found his place in the world gives me hope. In a world that may never understand who I am, it gives me hope that I can find a place for me. This song means so much to me. Thank you, Dan and Brian.

This is my first time listening to an NSP song, and I always avoided them because I thought all of their songs were just humorous pisstakes. But this one got on an emotional level. I was not at all expecting that! Excellent!
i know this is 11 months old but if you’re looking for more serious music from dan, check out his new band shadow academy, or his old one skyhill (he was also a part of a band called northern hues but that was early in his career so the sound isn’t quite as refined as his other stuff- still good though)

Damn, Danny. Talk about striking a cord, here I am 47 years old smiling and rocking along, and in tears by the end. This hit hard in so many ways.
I know this song came out 4 years ago (wow), but I decided to come back and listen to it and genuinely cried. I'm in a really rough spot and trying to figure out who I want to be in life, but I look up to Danny a whole lot. He's fearless, kind, genuine, everything anyone could ever aspire to be. It gives me the motivation to keep going and I'm super grateful for it. Keep rocking on, NSP.

As a 25 year old college senior who dropped out and went back and is struggling hard… I feel the awkward stage of 12-29 line a lot. Burst into tears in a Taco Bell drive through tonight listening to that. But that made me realize it’s all ok.

I feel like I was Danny growing up, even to the hair. Everyone always made fun of me and a good number of kids just knew me as "that guy with the hair". I was constantly mocked, went through depression, a goth phase, and the usual "its not a phase mom, God I hate you!" that high school is known for. Eventually picked up a bass guitar and that encouraged me to do what made me happy instead of falling into the patterns 'they' wanted me to. I began focusing on coding and understanding advanced electronics, music theory, and the things I wanted.
I'm 35 now, married with two kids, and have been working at an IT company ranked within the top 15 companies worldwide as a hardware and network engineer for a decade and a half. I'm living my dream; wonder if those that mocked me in school are doing the same.

This is my favourite NSP song, because you've finally given room for the music to kick as much ass as Danny's voice. This is a funny, lighthearted song just like all your other tracks and they're all great, but here it doesn't sound like the vocals and jokes are overpowering and interrupting the song itself, and there's a real signature to the track. It hits so much harder because of it. Please continue to put the track at the front just like this, it feels so much more full!

As a 27 year old who's still trying to figure out who I want to be in life and was feeling like it's too late for me to do anything great, The lines "you're just going through an awkward phase from 12 to 29" and "no one cares that you're 35" really hit hard. Really feels like maybe there's still time for me to figure it out after all.
UPDATE: It's been about a year since I commented this, and it's been great seeing responses from all the other people that the song resonated with as well. I just wanted to say: I've now got a part time job while also working as an independent artist, and I am loving what I'm doing. I started a youtube channel (not this one) after putting it off for a long time out of fear, and have been having so much fun doing something that I was originally feeling like I missed the boat on. It's really only too late if you don't try.
I hit 30 and finally found my calling in life. It takes a while, it's hard, it may not even end up being what you expect it to be. But it's worth it.

I didn't grow into myself until my late 20s and early 30s, which is surprisingly common. And yes, I am still a nerdy kid and proud of it. 14 year old me would be over the moon at my comic book collection.
