Thank you for the video. I have gradually figured out that I am very sensitive to bladder irritants. I am a male senior. If I get into the bladder irritants too much I have a very bad side effect - at three a.m. or so when I get up to empty my bladder, I have an extremely difficult time. It can literally take me an hour or more to finally empty my bladder. If I strictly avoid bladder irritants I don't have this problem. I have an enlarged prostate and had surgery to relieve some of those symptoms. Orange juice is another bladder irritant and I can verify that spicy foods definitely are. I can't drown my troubles because alcohol is another irritant.
there is a nerve that goes from the bottom of your foot (inner, top of heal). I massaged that area in my foot, and all the pain went away, and I am still waking p but have zero pain at night and am ok in the day......but darn I still wake up. Look at a "reflexology" chart of the foot...locate the bladder and really push hard into it...I found results right away...i write this from love....hope it helps! Some people use "tens" stimulus on this 'nerve' that runs along the tibia...but the nerve starts in the heal.
Everything is an irritant , citrus juices , tea , coffee , FD&C food colourings , medications , stress , motion , spices ... the list goes on . Great videos Doctor Malik .
I don't understand this entire concept! By the time the liquid or food you drink or eat reaches that region, it's not the original substance consumed! It's has to go through your digestive tract, bloodstream, and finally your kidneys that turn everything into urine. Now, I could understand certain drinks or foods that irritate the stomach lining.
Dr. Malik, you are the best! I am now 78 years old and have been drinking cokes since I was about 5 years old. I guess I built up a tolerance for the irritants, until about 5 years ago. I think my old body is just not up to it anymore, and now the carbonated water and caffeine have become irritants to my bladder. When I stand up after writing this comment, I might likely need to head to the bathroom to urinate as I have been here for 15-20 minutes. As long as I sit here I am okay, but once I stand up the old bladder plops down I guess from where it was in the sitting position and sets off the alarm. If I had been standing the whole time, I would likely not need to go for an hour or two or three. I did try giving up my beloved caffeined cokes a few months ago, and did notice the difference almost immediately. Some years back Coke and Pepsi had regular decaffeinated cokes and they were great. Then they decided I was their only customer and so quit producing them. I tried the diet ones, but my stomach cannot tolerate those sacharins or sugar substitutes, which bloated my stomach to the point I looked like I swallowed a basketball. So all that is left is ice water, which I am working on, and sneaking in a coke or two.😎
Same here. I had drunk tea my whole life.....and suddenly the 5 cups of tea per day - my body just won't tolerate. I can have 1 cup of tea in the morning with a fairly large breakfast - otherwise, it irritates the bladder. Iced water is great; with meals and before each meal as well. I'm about your age. Green tea is less irritating. Considered that?
Re, Caffeine: In our undergraduate Organic II lab we were given Caffeine samples from tea and coffee. We had to titrate the solution to determine the unit wt of caffeine from each sample. Thank you for this video. Caffeine as of lately has been irritating my bladder like HELL! It makes me pee so frequently but most of all it makes my bladder feel SORE and achey. I have sadly had to put a stop to any drinks with caffeine.

Hi Rena, I get burning sensation in my bladder. Don’t know why it happens. (Have Normal urination) Plz advise which foods to avoid? How to get relief from the bladder burning sensation. Thanks.
Hi there, I realize your post is from a long time ago but if you see this, I have the same issue with the burning bladder sensation - which only makes the urgency worse when those pain "flares" come on suddenly (Which is a few times a day on a good day)!!! And I have to be sitting when I get that sudden burning and seriously focused on holding in my pee during those burning flares before it passes and I can "safely" make a run to the bathroom without leakage! It's always stressful.. 😓 Did you end up getting help with the burning bladder issue and if so, what worked for you?? (P.s. In case anyone is wondering, it's not a UTI... That was the first thing the doctor checked for - Then told me to just practice doing Kegels.. Which doesn't really help the issue!) Any advice on this would be appreciated!! 😅
When I went to the doctor for OAB, he asked how many cups of coffee I drink, I told him that was the wrong question, it should be how many POTS of coffee do I drink. LOL

I noticed cosmetics(skin products, perfumes) with frangrance like limonene, linalool etc cause me to pee excessively. It’s affecting my quality of life, sleep etc.
I was drinking 8-9 cups of a coffee a day for about 10 years and I could cope with the bladder issues. But last year I hit 40 and then hit a wall with it. My bladder basically called uncle and started having a lot of symptoms including post-dribble, frequent urination, and a feeling of general irritation in my pelvic region. I need to cut back to a cup or less. I had several tests of course including lab work, ultrasound and a CT Urogram and could not find anything.
How much water do you drink every day? It seems that if you have 8-9 cups of coffee a day, there is "no place" for water or any other liquid. I had a friend who used to drink coffee and pop drinks only, almost no water at all. Later on, she got stones (kidney or gallbladder, I do not remember) and had surgery. Her partner had the same habit of drinking a lot of coffee and no water. Also had the same health issue. Now I always see them drinking water. I believe they decreased the caffeine consumption too 🤔
Cool! I was born in Buffalo and have family there. Thank goodness I can't do caffeine cos I have Crohn's Disease that no one seems to be able to treat decently. Struggling with bladder issues now.

It does count as water intake. Coffee is a mild diuretic. The problem with coffee is that it can alter your feeling of thirst, therefore you might consume less water later on. Just keep a glass of water next to your coffee to remind you to sip on it during the day and you are good to go.

What is your opinion on beer as a household remedy for UTIs? In my family, it was definitely encouraged to drink 0,5l of wheat beer. Doesn't even have to have alcohol in it. Also, my mom would heat it up before drinking it, which I refuse 😂 What do the experts say to this "remedy"? Is there any substance to it, aside from the alcohol? Is the yeast a factor? Idk, for me it always worked 😂

A question, have you come across a link between consumption of milk and bladder/prostate/kidney problems?? The reason i asked is that i have had recuring problems with urinary tract symptoms for years (especially/mostly at night), ever since my twenties. I have allways consumed large quantities of milk (love the stuff, milkshakes, hot chocolats, proteinshakes etc) Ive been to the doctors several times and they have never found any indication that its an infection. I have even done a test where they fill the bladder up with saline and test the bladder, they found nothing unusual. So they concluded that im one of those lucky people that just have an overactive bladder.. I have also a history of kidney stones, some of the symptoms i have after passing a stone (tho mine allwasy crumbles and i never see them) are very similiar to the overactive bladder symptoms. So back to the reason of my question.. I decided to cut down on milk, dont even remember why right now, but i did, went cold turkey!! And 95% of my urinary problems disappeared, i was quite shocked to be honest, this was some 2-3 years ago and the symptoms have stayed away even tho i have gradually been increasing my milk consumption, tho not nearly to the levels from before. BTW im 44 years old

Vanesa S hi, it has been around 3 months now that i had my IUD removed. And the bladder symptoms got better. I am still taking Vesicare. And my gyno gave me antibiotics to prevent any infection after removing IUD. I take birth control pills now. My gyno thinks it was my IUD. Hopefully your appointment goes well.🙏🏻
Doc, thank-you bunches, very informative!

I have just finished my induction round of BCG immunotherapy for bladder cancer. How long after the last treatment is it safe to have unprotected sex without any risk of transferring the TB virus? I have asked and heard opinions but none based on sound scientific study. I was curious what your knowledge is on this matter.
I just had prostate surgery and I have to get up to pee three times a night. What's the physiological difference between a younger person who sleeps through the night and me? Do you know any solutions? I tried a condom catheter but that was a disaster. Let me know. Thanks, be well Dr Rettner
I am 25 and I have been waking up to pee. Then it’s hard for me to sleep
How much overactive bladder is mental? Serious question.
I have been finding your video's very informative, hence why I subscribed. But now I find you even more interesting since I just learned you are from Buffalo and love the Timmy Ho ! Keep up the great work you are doing. You answer many questions I'm sure most are afraid to ask.
What about sparkling water?
Hello, Dr will tea be bad for bladder ?
@Rena Malik Thanks for your informative presentation. I hope enough people appreciate it to keep your interest.
Keep ur assets in the cameras focus..hope u read this comment..this is for the algorithm
0:12 Right the situation with me, but I learned it slowly to avoid that coffee cup before the meeting. Quick question Doc. Does drinking a chocolate drink affects the bladder? Does decaf coffee provide any relief in OAB?
Chocolate does have caffeine so it can cause some irritation. Decaf has a minimal amount of caffeine so unlikely to cause bladder irritation.
I am from palau and there is no urologist here but the doctor told me that maybe i have interstitial cystitis..i had overactive bladder for almost a year now and still no medication healed..im still hoping one day !that is why i came here to find some method for self medication by learning what is do's and don'ts..pls help me..doc

I drink only one cup of coffee a day but still have to urinate frequently. Why?
Here is de same problm
In the USA u overdo it with the teeth whitening
I really like your channel. I didn't know about carbonated beverages. You didn't mention tea. I drink a large decaf tea each day. I hope I am safe with it. I took Doxidozen many years, but I have found daily 5 mg Cialis works the best. A friend told me about it. Thanks for your show.
Cold water makes me go a lot.
So do you drink Lukewarm water?
@@The_buzzer3x yes
Ginger tea! I stared drinking ginger tea at night, big mistake! Nocuria big time.
I am limiting my coffee consumption to 3 cups a day now.
Maybe 2 next the 1 and none
Can tea can also irritate bladder??
What can I do to strengthen the bladder muscles.please do not tell me to exercise because I am doing a lot of exercise.
What is your opinion on beer as a household remedy for UTIs? In my family, it was definitely encouraged to drink 0,5l of wheat beer. Doesn't even have to have alcohol in it. Also, my mom would heat it up before drinking it, which I refuse 😂
What do the experts say to this "remedy"? Is there any substance to it, aside from the alcohol? Is the yeast a factor? Idk, for me it always worked 😂
No supporting data on that to my knowledge.
@@RenaMalikMD Okay, then maybe it's just the alcohol. Or I'm too German 😂😂
Thank you for the answer!
Cranberries
It is the hops in the beer.
How about truck drivers that drink coffee all day lol I I went to were all day long
Rena, I know this video was from 2019, but I just wanted to say that you looked very attractive in that white top
Water melon an tea sends me to the bathroom is that normal. I eat an juice about 2 watermelons a week .
They both create a lot of urine output
Is sparking mineral water ok 🤔
Yea, Buffalo!
What about caffeine pills?
Good question, by the way 🤔👍🏻
I found Monster Energy is a super diuretics and bladder irritant.
Shit good video this is what I'm going through technically not the peeing and bladder functions but a pain and tingle like a bull rammed a horn in your rear end and rag dolled you around I called it chronic anus discomfort but bladder irritations work or chronic bladder discomfort but yea I feel something much worse that a simple urge to go due to coffee
A question, have you come across a link between consumption of milk and bladder/prostate/kidney problems??
The reason i asked is that i have had recuring problems with urinary tract symptoms for years (especially/mostly at night), ever since my twenties.
I have allways consumed large quantities of milk (love the stuff, milkshakes, hot chocolats, proteinshakes etc)
Ive been to the doctors several times and they have never found any indication that its an infection.
BTW im 44 years old
We don't have Starbucks where I'm from, is Venti a big or small cup? All those cups seem so damn large, like 0,3/0,4 of straight up coffee seems so wrong hahah
I find drinking a latte actually relaxed my bladder
Vodka and Red Bulls seems like the perfect drink.
I have had Canadian coffee before
