- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Formula SAE race car competition, technology in the formula race car and engineering education. The Formula SAE race car competition is the premier race car competition in the world. It began here in Texas and now takes place all over the world.
Dr. Woods received his B.S. from Southern Methodist University 1967, his M.S. from Oklahoma State University, 1970 and his Ph.D. Oklahoma State University, 1971. He has three years of research experience with the U. S. government in Washington, D.C. in the area of fluidics and has been teaching and conducting research at the University of Texas at Arlington for 31 years. Dr. Woods is the faculty sponsor for all automotive engineering competitions and has had considerable experience as a consultant for industry. His areas of expertise include dynamic systems, modeling and simulation, control systems, fluid power control, fluidics, microprocessor and digital controls, logic systems, and automotive engineering.

I hope that Formula Student endures the ages. It has given me and many others a experience of a lifetime that will never be forgotten.
i find it confusing that this professor is presenting this car. why isnt the team captain doing it? the prof always talks about "we" did this and that. there should be no "we"! this is a student competition. it clearly states at the rules that there should be no professionals involved. This competition is about the students. Other than that great car and the aero really is pretty cool.
Arne Schlowak UTA's prof is really involved in the car's development. A lot of schools have a laissez faire faculty advisor and its up to the students to design and build something.

@@Thrillowatt Active aero is legal, "powered aerodynamic devices" means things like fan cars are banned
I think SAE aerodesign should have more videos like this one, I participated in the 2020 edition with my team of mexico, and wow is pretty impressive too
I mean their success probably doesn't have anything to do with the fact that UTA gives their FSAE team a large budget and a large pool of resources...
Benjamin Kelley I agree with you in the sense that they do absolutely have an abundance of resources, but they also had to get to that point. At the end you can see how many fsae cars they’ve built, and you can also see the progression in design. It also helps that they started it, so naturally they’re going to get a ton of funding. But in reality, it’ll just take years of time, dedication, and creative engineering solutions for any team to get to that point.
Money is not an issue in FSAE if you dont want it to be. There is somebody out there with your money, if you cant get it, youre doing something wrong
Yeah they've deserved that budget because of their reputation and legacy. I mean teams from. All around the world recognizes the UT Arlington racecar team
UTA hardly gave money. Sponsors did, and one of them that unfortunately passed away left a large sum to continue to the program for quite some time.
True, our car costs around 5k total, and we don't have access to materials like carbon fiber and magnesium Aloys. However, we really do well considering the price.
That Active Aero is sick
The Pagani Huayra and Pagani Huayra BC both have that Tech it is amazing.
Most of the highest end supercars and hypercars as well as the top tier racing series has been using it. F1 had it for one of the longest amounts of time.
I would be interested to see what the active aero is actually doing. The speeds for these cars are 20-65 mph for the most part so I have a feeling it's mostly to wow the judges, but when you have an unlimited budget any gain is still a gain. Cool regardless though.
You should see it now, the active aero for the front and rear wing adjust to turns and body flexing similar to the McLaren Sennas' rear wing.
They tried a sort of passive system in the past that was driven by suspension motion, but this seems to be much sturdier.
I love how a good 90% of commentators are current FSAE or alum. I myself am the prior.
I was part of FSAE in college also. It was a great experience like you said. Happy you are getting the message out there. one question. Why not an electronic shift mechanism?
+axel hoogland Difficult to make. We had one on our car for upshift only. It is actually my senior project to make the first ever FSAE Active Rev Match system for electronic down shifting.

Heh we have a strong no outsourcing policy for electronics. Additionally, the shift device you sent me doesn't seem to undergo true active rev matching.

does the car use the venturi effect-ground effect under the car to improve downforce ? what kind of engines do they use ? turbos ?
i was a fscer in china,most of the teams will use diffuser and wings to increase the down force,as for power unit ,some cars use combustion engine,some use motors.sadly,chinese fsae racecar teams are too young,we still have a long way to go.
most engines comes from different motorbikes like honda cbr or yamaha r6. yep as far as I know it is allowed to use turbos as well.
Depends on the team and the car.
The UTA cars do use venturi tunnel ground effects.
The engines change as the cars evolve. The last car was a naturally aspirated 600cc honda, four cylinder.

As stated in the video about combined clutch and shifter If someone has knowledge about design and manufacture please share it to me, I am a newbie in FSAE
This guys has obviously never seen GFR win FSG 4 times before making the claim of the "best team in america".
Plus Baja is cooler, you get to race the other teams. With jumps...and whoops...and tree logs...and mud...

the series has become a caricature of itself. Most teams have to find sponsors to raise 50-100k every year...some german teams have million dollar budgets. they pay dozens of undergrads to work on their cars full time! who do you think will win? FSAE has changed focus from training undergrads, to who has the most money. the cars are irrelevant outside of FSAE.
I assume you haven't been involved in formula student then? Because your claims are completely false.
There is NO German team that is paying their students! KA-RaceIng (one of the biggest teams) does not even have support from professors like most of the american teams do.
We don't even receive ETCS points for our work there either.
Plus: We are able to get a lot of sponsors because we have been successfull in previous years. 3 Years ago we were at the same point as any other team.
Besides: Getting in contact with sponsors is part of the competition. If you don't have the social skills to talk to the right people then you can't blame it on other teams....
@@KompletterGeist I can confirm. Even the best German teams like Munich don't pay and dont have "million dollar" budgets either
Im from HSNR Racing (German FS Team, too) and i/we have connections to probably 80% of the other teams. I need to say that nobody is getting paid for this.... its like a hobby ... just bigger.
@@KompletterGeist we get at least 14 ETCS - but the time we have to invest is still much more ...
