The red jaguar John had bought himself in ‘97. He said this himself in guitar magazine. Quite a while back. He probably bought a different one with Jim. I’ve seen John with a sunburst jag during the joy division cover band era. Plus two white Jaguars, one with dot inlays and one with block inlays. Who knows how many more he may have that haven’t been seen in public.
@@blistabliss hmm I disagree. That was Anthony's songwriting prime, IMO. Californication felt like it was shared, and then it was John after that. That's me though. When watching the BSSM documentary, John very much seems like a kid learning the ropes, under Anthony's wing sorta, and I think that dynamic carried through to the music.
The Peppers have been the apex of my love of music since 1989 when I first heard Mothers Milk. John’s guitar was my portal into that world. The back bone of that album is Flea and Chad with that powerful driving rhythm section, but John was a young wild genius over it all. I’m not religious but their music is about as close to church as I have. They’ve always been a quartet but I can say I think it’d be a beautiful idea to basically add Josh as an official fifth full time member. Fuck it, five guys. He’s not John, obviously, but the dude is a force musically. He’s been low key behind the scenes with them for a long time and is getting better and better with songwriting. He learned a lot from the time they spent with Dangermouse and while for ME the band really is the band I know when John is at the helm creatively, I can say I will miss what Josh brought to the band. If they’d bring him back into the fold officially I think it’d be amazing. Also as a side note I LOVE the direction they took for a minute with Dangermouse and if they revisited that with John now back, I think they’d create their magnum opus. I can only imagine the musical landscape Frusciante, Klinghoffer, and Burton would weave together.
i heard John say he likes listening to his playing on Californication because he got every ounce of his ability on the record, which he admitted was diminished
Geting into Niandra Lades in grade 8 really established my tolerance for a broad range of genres. It doesn't get too much more experimental than that. It's such a beautiful album. Under all the dissonance and chaos are such soft, sweet melodies all throughout the album.

I know it’s such a mainstream album but Californiacation is the only album that exists I can listen to from track one and play it all the way through without skipping.

Recovering junkies...😒 I mean, it works and it's not a lie, but I hate the term junkies. Recovering addict sounds better, but junkie is probably a better description...because John was beyond addicted! I'm so glad he survived. The world is better with him in it.
when I realised what he was looking for, hoped so much he would say addict.. as you said, junkie is what he was, but it's such a sensitive topic, I believe we should show respect to those, even more when talking about someone as talented as John and who has fully and bravely recovered. cheers, mate
@@julioluiz you should give respect to all people, whether they're talented or not. besides that, drug addicts usually don't mind or care if you call them junkies, as they call themselves like that all the time when they're in their group of peers. No need to be sensitive, it is what it is.
@@julioluiz whats wrong with calling things how they are. How did everybody get so soft these days. It‘s like more and more people transform to Karens.
Interesting... I find junkies will often use that term almost with pride. Pride isn't quite the word... Badge of honor? Something like that. Why use a softer term, when addiction is completely ugly? I think junkie is suitable. I never seen a junkie offended by the term. Perhaps because going through addiction changes and affects you so much, that the term is relatively meaningless. It's like, the same reason you wouldn't call a murder a "life nullifier" or something like that haha. I was a hardcore meth addict all through my twenties, tweaker never bothered me, as I didn't expect such a shitty thing to be described with an elegant term, i was realistic about it.
hate being the dude pointing it out but, that the studio engineer is gonna have so bad quality on his microphone that i cant understand what he says at times is a bit funny :P
I heard John's hand muscles, dexterity, and technique were weak during the composition and recording of Californication and that's why it has the distinct sound
the solos in both scar tissue and californication, as simple as they are, are two of the catchiest and most emotionally impactful parts of those songs and the whole record. i really don’t think the character and quality of either has anything to do with him recovering his strength or technique. they sound very deliberate to me.
I remember John mentioning at one point he toned down the speed and intensity for those albums, because his arm was weak from all the heroin use, and it was difficult to get through whole sets otherwise.
7:34 sitting on your knees blocks the energy from going to legs - this is a good trick i know cuz i practice that way and had an epiphany about it while on lsd
Unrelated note: I will never understand how these amazing musicians always have the shittiest microphones for online interviews, you'd think they'd buy better hardware?
hahah no doubt! If I were in this interview, and had what sounds like a webcam mic, I'd naturally set up an XLR. Every fiber in my soul would never allow that quality, it wouldn't even get to the point where I'd have to decide. I think some older analogue sound guys aren't necessarily computer savvy, perhaps that's why, he never got very into digital equipment. That's my guess. Gearheads and tecchy types are similar but there is apparently a major difference. I think gear is more mechanical skill as opposed to being tech savvy. I don't fucking know, there really is no excuse lol.
Oftentimes they have good gear but the recording software can’t capture it because it’s live. Like how your phone sounds much better when you record a voice memo than on a call
Shadows shows what the Chili's could be if they weren't mainstream and had someone who could actually sing - Anthony's vocals fit the Chili's though can't sing like John can.
yeah I disagree. Shadows is what RHCP would be if it was only John. And that's exactly what it is. John's solo stuff is totally different from RHCP. I think the songs are the way they are, mostly as a reflection of Anthony's vision for the band early on. John's contributions to RHCP are probably influenced by that vision. That's sorta what band members gotta do, they all gotta get on the same page. Then John's solo stuff is obviously him writing 100% what he wanted to. And to me, they're totally separate entities. What they COULD be? They're one of the biggest bands ever, and it's a pretty contrarian opinion to think Shadows is better than any chili peppers album. I like John's vocal tone, but he's not very technically skilled vocally either. And if Anthony's vocals fit the band, like you say, why do you want him replaced?
SCWP with a great random singer wouldnt be too good formula. Its 100% John that makes the album sound the way it sounds. If peppers would have had a great singer from the start the songs and albums would be totally different. No great singer is gonna do that funky scatty rappy singing. And without that their sound would be much more insignificant and dull. Peppers are the perfect example where the group is more valuable than the individuals combined.
josh's connection to the chili peppers is through John.........no shit sherlock. Johns connection to Josh though on a more enlightening note was through Bob Forrest
Dude come on Josh was John's friend and they made his solo records. Josh was back up guitar and keyboard on the Stadium Arcadium tour. Not to hate but if you didn't know that and you barely asked about By The Way which is easily their most musically ambitious album if your a big frusciante fan so there's literally a million questions you could have asked. I'm not trying to be a dick so I would hope you take it as constructive criticism if your gonna spend your time and money and get an opportunity that I've never seen anyone get before to talk to someone who was inside enough to know what he's talking about but outside enough to speak candidly. Also you would know that Josh is self admittedly not actually a guitar player originally as his primary instrument so that was an odd question. That said I learned a few interesting things for a person like me who really is interested in this very specific stuff. And btw I'm more than a casual fan but the things I pointed out aren't things I've researched or anything it's just like pretty common info. I really don't mean to be a dick I'm sorry this was really cool I was just a little disappointed that you really didn't ask hardly anything. It was still cool tho a lot of people will be satisfied. I'm not tryna be an aggro rhcp "stan" person at all. I really do mean it as constructive criticism if ur gonna make more vids. Power to ya.

i totally get what jim (and others have) said here re: jf not being "strong" on coming back for cali, but i personally disagree- it's arguably their most iconic album (tied w/ bssm in the eyes of the masses i think) with at least 3-4 bonafide anthems which transcend their era and are forever deeply apart of music culture. maybe his technical prowess wasn't what it was on stadium arcadium for example, or even on bssm if going back, but i wouldn't have wanted it any other way; it's perfect.
Anthony has referred to himself as a former junkie. When you’ve been to rock bottom you know you can’t sugar coat it with semantics.
INTERESSANT
the solos in both scar tissue and californication, as simple as they are, are two of the catchiest and most emotionally impactful parts of those songs and the whole record. i really don’t think the character and quality of either has anything to do with him recovering his strength or technique. they sound very deliberate to me.
I remember John mentioning at one point he toned down the speed and intensity for those albums, because his arm was weak from all the heroin use, and it was difficult to get through whole sets otherwise.
dope.
this guy must have tons of mics in his studio, but preferes to talk into the shit mic of his toaster... unbelieveable
The best comment on here. 🤣
The guys old school. Probably doesnt even know hes filmed.
theres a fragility to that solo
7:34 sitting on your knees blocks the energy from going to legs - this is a good trick
i know cuz i practice that way and had an epiphany about it while on lsd
Stadium Arcadium is a gift. Learn the entire album by ear and you’re set for life on guitar lessons.
@@JunkBondTrader But what do you think about another live DMT session soon?
Oftentimes they have good gear but the recording software can’t capture it because it’s live. Like how your phone sounds much better when you record a voice memo than on a call
#davesimpson I love that red Jaguar he has. Alot of that was on Californication. Or a few songs.
Shadows shows what the Chili's could be if they weren't mainstream and had someone who could actually sing - Anthony's vocals fit the Chili's though can't sing like John can.
no
yeah I disagree.
Johns connection to Josh though on a more enlightening note was through Bob Forrest
no shit sherlock? How is a obscure fact about a band common knowledge? More like, No shit anyone who isn't a huge chili peppers fan.
How’s a sound engineer not take the time to set up better audio for this interview?
Why is the audio so shitty????
I can't believe that someone that calls themselves 'engineer' has so bad audio quality in a call
How did he sit on the floor and use a crybaby, that doesn’t sound right
Recording tips from someone who can't record their own voice!
Ironically, the sound on this interview is unlistenable.
What an irony! Audio is terrible!
1 hot min???? rock is not dead.Thorough research died.
awful questions
John has been recording amazing guitar for a bad lead singer, what a shame
Bad singer yet they have countless incredible songs that I couldn't imagine with another singer. It really isn't a shame lol.
@@JunkBondTrader so does nickleback
They are so horrible. It boggles the mind to try and understand how they have longevity.
im genuinely curious….what do you consider good??
