I've been listening to John since 1989 when I was 17 years old. I've followed his career since then. I was always so blown away as he was 2 years older than me and was extremely talented at such a young age.
That "subconscious echo" to the conscious observations is such an awesome concept that makes perfect sense and is incredibly fascinating. You can tell it captures them both by how excited they get talking about it. Listening to creative people is endlessly fascinating.
I just loved this interview. Loved how articulate John is and Rick asked some excellent questions. Really made me see music and the writing of it in a different light.
Love these interviews with John, my bucket list included seeing John live with the Peppers one day, and it came true in August I got to see them in Toronto, on the floor in front of John about 9 rows back, truly an unforgettable night !! 🎸
Saw them twice live with John recently and was blown away. Almost to the point where I didn’t know how to digest it bc of so much going on. I watched the live recorded versions of the shows and was even more blown away. Like I didn’t have time to completely take it in and digest what was happening in front of me. It went by so fast.
@@burdman1333 Same experience for me, it went so fast I tried to absorb it, was like a dream, I've never seen such a happy crowd leaving the show everyone chatting with each other about the show all the way onto the street, such a euphoric experience. Rick and John I appreciate you both for capturing lightning in a bottle each time you do an episode. I learn a lot and get inspired with each new edition.
this is the first time ive ever heard someone describe that sort of condensed emotion visual thing john's talking about and it makes me happy that ive heard someone describe it for the first time
Thank you, Rick! Truly a gift to hear John open up and talk at such length and to hear your own thoughts as well. These simpatico conversations about music seem to become “musical” in their own right. Can’t wait for the 3rd disk of Rubium Frusciantium….😊
These podcasts are just magical. The conversations are so interesting and a lot of things really resonated with me on a personal level. Really grateful you're making these, and looking forward to the third one!
Always blown away by the sheer depth of these interviews!! How many guitarists are reflecting on the moment saying they have to balance the past, future, and present together to be playing the right notes 🌶 imagine John Frusciante teaches lessons as an instructor. He is so brilliant beyond anything I have seen. And then just when your pleased with two they say let's go for a third. What a treat!!
53:41 Can relate to the feeling and creative energy that appears when you find a movie you want to watch or hear a music piece that fits in your brain like a puzzle piece. I get the same energy sometimes when I model in CAD or take the printed part off the 3D printer. To the last part, to take a finished part off the 3D printer sometimes gives me the feeling like when you was a child on Christmas and opening a present you really wanted. The feeling are hard to describe in words.
Listening to this interview was so touching and moving that I was brought to tears. There is way more to the magic Rick brings out in people then just”letting them speak” he knows how to talk to people and listen to people and is a true guru ! And I have a new love for john and the chili peppers
Around 1:14:00, where he’s talking about solo’ing live and sometimes not feeling what comes out… I think it’s awesome that he improvises pretty much every solo live, even with this risk. He could just play the exact same stuff every night and duplicate the albums, but he’s so dedicated to his art and the audience that he insists on creating anew. And when he really nails it, which is most of the time, it’s such an amazing experience for the audience. This dude is a rare breed.
Another mind blowing conversation... excellent. It's funny John said he had that dilemma of "showing off" or trying to "prove he was the best guitarist" vibe or whatever during the Stadium Arcadium recording... when I never once ever considered his playing "showing off" - I think of his work as coming from the deepest well of emotion where every note is simply meant to be... Also, his solo album "Curtains" just wrecks me every time I listen; it is carnal and brutally beautiful.
The first time I heard Curtains it was specifically the song 'The Real' while I was coming up on lsd. A breathtaking experience.... I was completely addicted from that moment.
@@johnarundell7951 Pertaining to flesh; sensual. It sounds like he is trying to rip his own heart out of his chest. You must not have heard the album or know all the meanings of the word.

He is savant tier when it comes to guitar and melody in general. Hendrix, Van Halen, Frusciante. It’s not about technicality, it’s about the substance, IMO at least.
Well, VH was a high point in the meeting area between technique and originality. Frusciante gets put up with those 2 a lot but no one brings up the amount of Fripp or Belew in his playing. He's an art rock guitarist IMO.
@@shawnmcvey7789 Cobain and Picciotto as well. I'm not saying that EHV and Hendrix were influences, although the were, I'm saying Frusciante is at their level when it comes to what he does with a guitar.
This was good stuff, but I was dissapointed they skipped over talking about my favorite album BTW, until the end when they announced there's going to be yet another John & Rick podcast! Awesome! Never get tired of listening to these two
Well, im just found out that Rick Rubin has podcasts, and this is true gift. He is a great intervuer. Have a huge love for John as a most favorite guitar player and huge respect for Rick and his work. For me Rick is a defenition what good producer does with the bands in busines. Many eyars ago i've lisened some demo materials before band meet Rick and compare it when Rick stept in. Huge difference. Only then i realise how important this craft. Back in the days i was thinking that producers only gave money for the record sessions, hanging out with the stars and take some bite of royalities. Considering that how often the artists complains on big bosses in the musical business, i was convinced that producers was a part of this circle. And then i lern more about Rick. And about guys like George Martin of Beatles.
As a painter I have something similar to what John is talking about. In my case of course it is maybe even more 'visual', as it usually ends up being a painting. But it all starts with the hint/feeling/presentiment of something that is going to take physical form. Sometimes it's more or less defined, but there is no doubt that this is the SOMETHING that makes art happen. I believe everyone can experience that, just stay opened and relax, you cannot force it!
Awesome interview. Gotta pick back up at By the Way though. Ended the last one at Californication. Just completely skipped BTW and SA. It was super interesting hearing johns thoughts on each album and some of his processes for playing and recording on each album.
I can’t get over how incredible it is how as a big fan of Joe Jackson, a song of his that I don’t even remember hearing influenced John for the chorus of Under the Bridge. Frusciante to me will forever be regarded as one of the absolute greatest of all time.
Rick talking to John could be a monthly podcast, honestly. These conversations are great. I also think musicians should more often be interviewed with an instrument on their hands. It was cool of Rick to hand John a guitar!
That part of the conversation around 1:00:40 made me think of this quote by Francis Bacon: "Salomon saith, There is no new thing upon the earth. So that as Plato had an imagination, that all knowledge was but remembrance; so Salomon giveth his sentence, that all novelty is but oblivion."
I love these interviews! For part three i’d love to see questions on all of John’s solo albums (Niandra LaDes, Smile from the streets you hold + more) it would dope if you asked what the scene and culture was like in the late 80s early 90s in LA (Jains Addiction) the bands they met and how it influenced John’s musical sensibilities. Also advice for guitarists in a band :)
I think John is THE Master at his craft and he does not care about the fame or fortune. This epitomizes why music is the lifeblood in all of us whether we know it or not.
This was way more important to me than the rhcp albums. So many of the artists ive studied since i was a child and throughout adulthood are shared by Frusciante. I have printouts of chord and scale charts from holdsworths instructionals pinned to my walls, and some of my earliest experiences with recording music were trying to recreate zappa songs by ear by layering guitars. I spent many years looking in a mirror with my guitar and playing randy rhoads songs, pretending i was him. I couldnt be prouder to be part of that musical tradition, even as a very very small part. To be able to hear the most prominent and recent member of that musical ancestry sharing so much of his thinking means the world to me. His explanation of how he sees and feels music especially was important to me because I've done the exact same thing all my life since i got my first audio players and toy instruments when i was very little. Im not aware of anyone else who talks about music this way. I spent some time in college studying western philosophy and ive read dozens of philosophy books but art and music are rarely talked about, and if it is with very little practical application or insight into actual experience. I think ive read more about why there's an avoidance to talking about art and music than anyone actually talking about it. Theres this idea in a lot of ancient tribal religions that we owe what we have to those who came before us - ancestor spirits. we owe them a debt that cant be fully repaid, only passed down through more generations. Every generation the debt owed grows and so do the gifts we inherit. I will do my best to do that with my own music students and in my own art.
I'm a relatively new fan of RHCP. This John fella really sounds like a genuine guy, and it was scary to hear about his rougher life experiences. I'm glad to hear that he's doing a lot better these days. Great talk.
Very good topick Rick picked to discuss. Interest - itself is such a focal point of our life and it is not talked about often, even in psychiatry. While it really guides our lives and give advises on path.

Rick and John? You could upload 100 episodes & I would listen to them all...
My brain is so happy right now, after spending 1 hour and 21 minutes with these two amazing and relaxing voices.
John always makes me feel less crazy. Always aids my confidence when dealing intensely with the physical and metaphysical fragility of songwriting.
That "subconscious echo" to the conscious observations is such an awesome concept that makes perfect sense and is incredibly fascinating. You can tell it captures them both by how excited they get talking about it. Listening to creative people is endlessly fascinating.
These conversations are absolutely fascinating. So free of bullshit and cliche.
I just loved this interview. Loved how articulate John is and Rick asked some excellent questions. Really made me see music and the writing of it in a different light.
Thank you for these sessions with John. Absolutely incredible, never heard him talk so much!!
Love the Joe Jackson song and the connection with Under the Bridge - interesting insights!
I have a feeling that, over time, these JF episodes will be listened to millions of times. He's so calming to listen to.
I could listen to John and Rick talk all day. Love this series. What a great year for RHCP and all of us fans.
I watched all the RUclips videos of the shows leading up to the Toronto show so I knew I was in for the best concert of my life !! Really hope they do another tour for the new album.
Rick and John I appreciate you both for capturing lightning in a bottle each time you do an episode. I learn a lot and get inspired with each new edition.
These are the best John interviews I've ever heard. He's really engaged and talking in a way I can relate to
I download these videos and listen to them while working, great relief and time just flies.
this is the first time ive ever heard someone describe that sort of condensed emotion visual thing john's talking about and it makes me happy that ive heard someone describe it for the first time
Thank you, Rick!
Best john interview, I learned a lot from this. Thank you!
Been looking forward to this - two legends 🙌🏻🎸
Thx so much John for sharing how you learn, practice, create and feel about music, this is priceless for guitarists and music lovers in general! ❤🎸
Do this every month with John Frusciante pls!!! 🤟🇿🇦
When he started breaking down the scales...I was in guitar heaven
Around 1:14:00, where he’s talking about solo’ing live and sometimes not feeling what comes out… I think it’s awesome that he improvises pretty much every solo live, even with this risk. He could just play the exact same stuff every night and duplicate the albums, but he’s so dedicated to his art and the audience that he insists on creating anew. And when he really nails it, which is most of the time, it’s such an amazing experience for the audience. This dude is a rare breed.
I would like to know what is the process in the band where john sings alone like in the heavy wing or how they decide when to put a secondary voice
Please keep this series going. I love how both of you explore music, so eye opening.
I can't get over how fascinating this conversation is.. dear god Rick and John keep doing these talks!
Thank You! Rick, John, Anthony, Flea and Chad for helping me through this part of my life. I am truly more inspired today then I was yesterday.
Not sure you know what 'carnal' means because Curtains is absolutely not carnal in any way.
@@johnarundell7951 Pertaining to flesh; sensual. It sounds like he is trying to rip his own heart out of his chest. You must not have heard the album or know all the meanings of the word.
I love John Frusciante so much. One of the most important figures through my life. I play all his stuff all the time and love him so much. Long live frusciante
Yay. Done said imo on The internet. Salute. 🙏
When John hits on his state of mind where Past Present and Future find a perfect sweet spot to create music
John puts more feeling in a few vocal lines than most lead singers. Incredible artist!!!
I love and I’m so grateful for this conversations with John. Thank you Rick and John for opening his mind to us 🙏🏽
Rick talking to John could be a monthly podcast, honestly. These conversations are great. I also think musicians should more often be interviewed with an instrument on their hands. It was cool of Rick to hand John a guitar!
That part of the conversation around 1:00:40 made me think of this quote by Francis Bacon:
"Salomon saith, There is no new thing upon the earth.
This epitomizes why music is the lifeblood in all of us whether we know it or not.
literally jumped at the sight of this! yesss! thanks!
So, there will be Part 3! Yes!!!
This interview was so awesome. Rick Rubin and JF himself. Thank you!
I stand in the mirror wackin off to this comment, uhhhh
I'm a relatively new fan of RHCP. This John fella really sounds like a genuine guy, and it was scary to hear about his rougher life experiences. I'm glad to hear that he's doing a lot better these days. Great talk.
This should be a weekly/monthly podcast!
those couple of minutes at 01:08:20 where John brakes down UTB are pure magic
I love he shows love for Zappa and beefheart
I could listen to these two all day. I just might. John is a fascinating person! I am learning so much.
Very good topick Rick picked to discuss. Interest - itself is such a focal point of our life and it is not talked about often, even in psychiatry. While it really guides our lives and give advises on path.
30 minutes in and I can already hear John flexing his music theory knowledge on this interview. This is amazing…
Two of the greatest creative minds of all time. In their own respective ways. This is unbelievably helpful for any musician to be able to listen to.
Wonderful interview. John has a standing invitation to play guitar in my backyard anytime. Avoid winter🤣
Many people including myself, are very happy listening to john on this podcast so comfortable and talkative
Thank you for the interviews Rick Rubin & Broken Record 🙏
Please have a Part 3
You can tell how comfortable he is talking to you ✌️
Could you please ask him about the project he did with Danny Carey & Kevin Cey & also working with The Mars Volta?
Thanks this is wonderful interview series. I absolutely love the way you handle the interview Rick and so interesting to listen to all aspects from John
